View Full Version : Beta Gauntlet VIII
superslug Mar 25, 2006, 07:53 PM As predicted, we've come to the Diplomatic section of the Gauntlet cycle-but there is a small catch.:D
Newcomers are as usual always welcome. Just be advised that HOF Beta Rules (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/rules.php) do apply, in addition to these settings.
Difficulty: Prince
Mapsize: Tiny
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Submitted on or before: April 9th.
Victory Condition: Diplomatic
Stipulation:
You must launch and hit any combination of AI cities with at least two nuclear weapons before the turn on which the winning diplomatic vote is called for. Interceptions will not be counted.
WastinTime Mar 25, 2006, 08:33 PM Tiny? Ugh, Again a Diplo gauntlet with NO diplomacy. This is just a Domination game and you vote for yourself. If it had been Large maybe instead of Tiny it would be really tough to get the votes after a Nuking. Clever idea there! but it think it will be wasted.
superslug Mar 25, 2006, 08:55 PM These Gauntlets usually surprise me in how they turn out, either better or worse, so we'll see what happens. I will say however that we're probably not going to rotate through all the other victories before coming back to Diplomatic though. I'm already thinking about a different Diplo setup, but decided against mixing it with the nuke clause.
Drool Mar 25, 2006, 10:15 PM Does this mean 2 nukes per AI or in total against any AI?
Crayfish Mar 25, 2006, 11:57 PM Sounds hard.. but I am sure it can be done.
Thrar Mar 26, 2006, 05:29 AM Are we allowed to disallow the other victory conditions?
Denniz Mar 26, 2006, 05:30 AM Are we allowed to disallow the other victory conditions?Sorry, but no. All normal HOF rules apply.
superslug Mar 26, 2006, 06:11 AM Does this mean 2 nukes per AI or in total against any AI?
2 nukes total against any AI. You can launch both at one, or one at two.
n0xie Mar 26, 2006, 06:51 AM This seems to be the 'how do I not win via domination before I nuke the AI' challenge...
Thrar Mar 26, 2006, 08:35 AM That's why I asked about the victory conditions... ;)
On a higher difficulty I could imagine that teching would be faster if the AIs are left alive and well for a while, to get a faster time for victory.
On prince, however, I don't think it'll help out much, but it might still be worth a thought.
The 777 Hoax Mar 26, 2006, 03:29 PM I've never done one of these before... I think I shall try it.

Please! We're welcome to all CFCr's. If you have any questions, ask away.:goodjob:
sirford Mar 27, 2006, 04:51 PM hm, i just got 1740AD. and i think i could have done it much earlier.
WastinTime Mar 27, 2006, 06:12 PM My first attempt was with the usual, Liz on Great Plains.
I'm tempted to try this one OCC like gauntlet 4, but didn't this time.
1340 AD finish.
Nuking twice only gets you -2 relations with the civ(s) you didn't nuke.
and another -1 if the target you declared war on was a friend of theirs.
I think I was +18 relations, so -3 didn't hurt me and I got the vote anyway.
Andrei_V Mar 27, 2006, 06:30 PM Is this Gauntlet an OCC?
superslug Mar 27, 2006, 06:30 PM Is this Gauntlet an OCC or non-OCC would do, too?
This one's not an OCC.
n0xie Mar 27, 2006, 08:48 PM Finished OCC at late 1500s. Much room for improvement. Going to try a different approach. Need to stop making detours for 'Music' and learn to time better :)
WastinTime Mar 28, 2006, 03:17 PM I also tried an OCC. I played a 5 food, 0 commerce start with Gandhi, so the game wasn't really my usual style. I got 1520 AD victory.
I don't believe this gauntlet will be won with an OCC entry.
WastinTime Mar 28, 2006, 03:22 PM superslug,
I don't think we should be allowed to launch the 2 nukes on the last turn when the vote is called for. That seems to defeat the purpose. Can you confirm this is not allowed?
And when you say "hit" the AI. Do you have to hit a city? or just explode anywhere?

Yes, I was wondering about this.
BTW, thank you for the warm welcome :D

I know but since I probably won't beat the top player(s) anyway, I'd decided to have a least a bit of fun with OCC. I've becoming quite fond of OCC over the last few HOFs. My goal is a late 1400s win and I'm happy. I was close with an earlier game but missed out on the first UN vote by a few votes which set me back.
edit: I got a crazy opening position though: click (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=121421&d=1143589324)
Drool Mar 28, 2006, 07:24 PM How does everyone get mass media so fast. I struggle to get it before 1600. Any tips please. Is it just a matter of lots of science buildings and trading?
superslug Mar 28, 2006, 07:31 PM superslug,

Excellent questions. You must launch before the vote turn, and you must target cities. As stated before, interceptions will not count.

Well, I guess that tosses out my game. I didn't want to reduce the population so I didn't hit a city. I did do it before the vote though cus that didn't seem right otherwise.
WastinTime Mar 28, 2006, 09:31 PM n0xie,
Might be a nice start, but I'd give up two of those 6 food tiles for a gems or a couple fur. You're gonna be slow starting on tech. Also, you don't have Marble which is usually around the Great Plains. I would be concerned about being crammed in the corner too, but it looks like there are lots of forests to chop anyway. Glad you enjoy OCC so much. I always have to try it that way too.
And what are you doing building a Warrior?
Drool Mar 28, 2006, 10:21 PM Can someone tell me how to get the time and the turn number on my main screen as in noxie's link.
Drool Mar 28, 2006, 11:00 PM Sorryy for so many questions, but Ive built two nukes but why can't i nuke their cities. Ive explored their cities while I had an open border but I cant seem to get a green square to nuke them. Please help
n0xie Mar 28, 2006, 11:52 PM n0xie,

Yeah I noticed halfway through the game that this many bonus food tiles is suboptimal: I had way too few cottages to be a real competitor for the early win. It seems 2 bonusfoodtiles and 2 hills and the rest grass is the optimal setting.
The warrior is there for the 'we feel unsafe'. I'm curious what your build order is: there is not much else you can build at this time. (guessing you rush for pottery and BW like me...)

Install the Hof Mod :)

Are you at war with anyone? I think you can only nuke someone *after* you've declared war...

Yea, declare war, then you have to pick a square that doesn't cause damage to you or a friend's land. Each tile adjacent to the target is affected.

But Liz starts with a warrior. No need for 2.
I build worker, worker, then either Library or Pyramids depending on whether I get Masonry or not. I'll do that if I have Marble to work.
I rarely rush for pottery anymore. Sometimes skip it completely and trade for it after alphabet. If I have Deer and Fur (which happens a lot on GreatPlains) Hunting will be all I need until alphabet.
I've also been known to skip BW. If there aren't many trees I'll do that. If I have a couple Pigs or if I get Animal Husbandry from a hut, then it's Hunting->(An. Hus)->Writing->Alphabet

Thanks WastinTime. I figured it out and it was the damage to friends land that was causing the problem. I was targeting a very weak civ and their cities were right on the borders of another civs.
Big_Ben Mar 29, 2006, 04:38 PM I have been playing OCC ever since the last diplo gauntlet. I am losing my touch when playing with multiple cities. It is actually slowing me down now. Gotta get back into it. Or I may just have a go at this with just OCC.
The only attempt I have made so far was non-OCC and finished around 1750. That is kinda slow for me, I managed 1100 with gauntlet IV. Should only take 200 years past that to get the nukes off.
Conquestador Mar 30, 2006, 03:49 AM i'm playing this gauntlet and i've reached around 50% of the world population. I've heard that there is a limit on the vote you can use for a diplo victory ... it is true ? how much is the limit ?

i think desire for Gauntlet is gone.no answer in 5 days.:D
Conquestador Apr 06, 2006, 04:21 AM i think desire for Gauntlet is gone.no answer in 5 days.:D
merhaba ;)
i've already submitted my game but i don't know how much of my votes counted. I think i would make a test game to investigate or i will ask in the strategy forum.
A_Turkish_Guy Apr 06, 2006, 12:26 PM merhaba ;)
it is nice to see speaking Turkish:D :D ;)
means hi.
Dianthus Apr 06, 2006, 12:28 PM hi.
For those of you that don't speak American, that means "hello" :p.
Tauro Apr 10, 2006, 02:10 AM Arggghhhh... I missed another gauntlet :( :( :(
Why only twenty days?
BTW, is it an open competition?
Dianthus Apr 10, 2006, 02:39 AM Why only twenty days?
We do an update 2 times a month and the update date makes a good cutoff for the Gauntlet. If there's interest we were thinking about maybe having a 2nd longer Gauntlet that runs for a month so we can also do some larger map sizes.
BTW, is it an open competition?
Yes, open to everyone, in the same way normal HOF entries are open to everyone. Just follow the HOF rules when playing and submit via the normal submission page. Have you seen the HOF site (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/index.php)?
Tauro Apr 10, 2006, 06:32 AM Sure, that's the standard :)
I've played just for curiosity but unfortunately I had a map with no uranium  :D
Anyway I wonder how it is possible to launch ICBM in 1300 AD!! I flyed in the game, and completed the manhattan project before 1700....took out Ghandi in 2000 BC...wich was the best type of map? Great plains?
WastinTime Apr 10, 2006, 10:32 AM Yea, great plains works well. Lots of food and marble. Unfortunately no stone or uranium, but the great thing about Great Plains is that the civ on the far left will get several uranium, so just gift them techs up to Physics. I also gift them a worker or two after building the roads to the uranium.
My computer died this past week, so I didn't get many runs in. 1380AD was my only submission. My 1340 AD win was before they changed the rules. You have to nuke a city not just enemy land, so that game was thrown out and I couldn't beat it.
Next gauntlet should start today or tomorrow. Now that I built a whole new computer, I'm ready for a big map!
Tauro Apr 10, 2006, 01:34 PM thx all, my hof mod is up and running :)
n0xie Apr 10, 2006, 04:26 PM I played an OCC but didnt enter since I wasnt able to beat Wastintimes score anyway. Great Plains is great though. Especially for OCC :)
Dianthus Apr 10, 2006, 06:41 PM Congratulations to Wastin Time for winning this Gauntlet convincingly by 1380 AD. Conquestador took 2nd place with 1800 AD and pavelthesecond 3rd place with 1896 AD.
The next Gauntlet start here now (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=166632).
