I'd like to share my little color conversions with you. Over the years, many great units have been released by much more skilled artists than me.

At some point, I wished some of these units had a different camo or painting so that I could use them for other nations or theatres of operation.

Here are some of my humble alterations of great units made by other creators.
Some of them have been released before, but I wanted them to be found easily.

Please note that I have collected my units with desert camo in a special thread that you can find HERE (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=165284).

I'd like to thank the original creators!
Please keep in mind that those are only conversions, not entirely new units.

If you're planning to do more of these, I have a request that's been bugging me for a LONG time - ripptide's Tiger II tank! The bright-coloured camo pattern might be historically accurate, but it looks kind of circus-like in game. A menacing stark grey would make that unit just perfect.

I do plan to do more units. I'll see what I can do with the Königstiger. My main focus will be on non-WW2 units though, since the old ones will become obsolete once SOE is released - the units Wyrm makes are far superior to the old ones.

Okay, before I get to the requests (I haven't forgotten about them, don't worry), here are two more tanks. Both are based on Ripptide's Leopard 2A5.

Update #1:

Leopardo 2E, the spanish version.

Info by Wikipedia:

Leopardo 2E

A derivative of the version 2A6 (with greater armor protection), developed under a program of co manufacture between the industries of Spain and Germany. The program is developed within the frame of collaboration decided in 1995 between the Ministries of Defense of both countries, in which also was included the cession of use by a period of five years of 108 Leopard 2A4 from the German Army to the Spanish Army. However, this cession was extended up to 2016, and after that those tanks will be of the Spanish Army. In 1998, the Spanish government agreed to contract 219 tanks of the Leopard 2E line, 16 recovery tanks Leopard 2ER (Bufalo) and 4 training vehicles. They choose Santa Bárbara Sistemas as the main contractor. The program, with a budget of 1,939.4 million Euros, includes also the integrated logistical support, training courses for crew instructors and maintenance engineers and driving, turret, maintenance, aiming and shooting simulators. Deliveries of the first batch began in 2004 and should complete in 2008.

Ares de Borg
Apr 04, 2006, 06:45 PM
Update #2:

The second one is the Swedish variant of the Leopard, the Strv 122. I liked the camo on this one.

Info by Wikipedia:

Leopard 2(S)

- Strv 122 used by the Swedish Army
- Based on the 2A5
- Has upgraded Command and Control systems and increased armor protection.
- Can be distinguished from the 2A4 Strv 121 by its wedge-shaped turret armor.

Ares de Borg

Update: I added the Canadian Leopard C2.

Actually a heavily uparmored modification of the Leopard I, this unit is very similar to the Leopard II at Civ scale. If you want, you can also use it as a 'what-if' Canadian Leopard II. ;)

The Leopard C2 boasts a much more accurate weapons system; it can accurately engage targets on the move at twice the range of the C1. A computer in the tank monitors the target's range and factors that affect the flight of the round such as wind speed and air temperature. Then it does all the necessary calculations to get the round on target.

In addition to the tank upgrade, 18 Leopard Crew Gunnery Trainers were purchased under the Leopard Thermal Sight Project. The Armour School at CTC Gagetown will receive six of these, while regiments across Canada will receive four each.

Even with all of the improvements, the Leopard's life expectancy has been stretched only to about the year 2010. The long-range future for the tank in Canada is still not certain. Analyses of alternate options, fleet rationalization and operating costs are ongoing.

The tank can actually function, depending on the threat level or the operational environment, as long as Canada want to keep it in service. The tank is operated by five other countries, and, with 1500 Leopards of about the same configuration in service, industry is committed to providing spare parts.

All Leopard C2s should be delivered by August 2001.

Update: The South African Olifant Mk.1A (based on the Centurion).
Since it's not exactly a desert camoflage, I posted it in this thread. A desert version (if you want to use it for Israel or Lebanon) can be found in the desert conversion thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=3872472).

The dry terrain camo of the African Centurion can also be seen on this Olifant Mk.1B. I'm sorry that there was no better pic of the Mk.1A around than what I posted next to the unit preview.

I may build my own Oliphant on my Centurion chassis. Btw, the Konigstiger you have previewed is the Porche turret while ripptide only made the Henshel turret. I did both for SOEv5.

Ares de Borg

Good to hear. Have you decided which version of the Oliphant you're going to do? It would be cool if you did the Mk.1B or the Mk.2 so our tanks could roam the savanna together. ;)

About the Tiger: I told Gorn already that my conversion is only meant to be a temporary replacement before SOE comes out. :) I had a look at the Tiger you previewed and it looks really great.

I really appreciated all your color conversions: they really look as brand new units.
I was wondering if you can add to your list a superb M2 unit by Aaglo (thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=124939)). It is a wonderful units but the camo won’t fit with other modern infantry unit, like the famous by Balou (thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=30000)), so teaming them looks not very nice. I think it’s worth either to repaint aaglo M2 team in standard light green or (why not?) to repaint Balou’s infantry in a camo like the M2 team
I hope you may find time to deal with this request. Anyway, thanks for what you already done. (…and terrains too!)

Two more Shermans added.

First, the Commonwealth version of the M4A4, the Sherman V.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/shermanv_lg_rr1.jpg

It was used by the UK, Canada, New Zealand etc, but also given to Belgium, Holland and the Free French.

The second is a dark-green Sherman V, which was widely exported after WW2. Brazil, Peru, Paraguay and others used these. Dark green camo was also used by the Allies in the Pacific.

The upgunned version served in Chile until the end of the 1980ies!

Mr_Fusty
Feb 14, 2008, 11:11 AM
I do love the Sherman V- it's a damm shame my scen only uses Soviet units.
(And there is no way I can write them into the story  )

I have DL them and stuck them on a CD-R though. Never know when I may need them.

For simplicity sake, I may just file off the logos and have them naked. Still will need to recolour them though - some are desert camo, some woodland, some urban. I'll see what looks best. I can imagine rust is a pain, but my scen is set in the mid 80's and there is a few T-34's lurking around. Thought that at that age, they may be a bit worn...

Ares de Borg
Feb 15, 2008, 07:58 AM
I'm not sure what you mean... you can't change the textures, only recolor them.

Mr_Fusty
Feb 20, 2008, 05:54 AM
Yeah, I've now learnt that too  . I've managed to re-colour most of them (so their colours match up, kinda) and after a lot of pain managed to file off most of the logos. Done the map, put on the cities and civs, now fighting the tech tree. Still trying with rust, I will go to any length to put it on....

Funny how little consideration was spent on the high silhouette back then compared to the modern armored vehicles.

That was born of necessity: America didn't have an off-the-shelf turret that could carry a decent size gun, so they put a 75mm in a sponson and a 37mm gun in the turret as a stop-gap measure.

-Oz

Wyrmshadow
Feb 20, 2008, 01:42 PM
A high silhouette was the result of a radial aircraft engine being used. The M3 Grant was meant as an stop gap measure between the inadequate M2 medium and before prodction could be started on the M4 Sherman. But it was still more powerful than any UK tank in the desert at the time, so it was desperately needed against Rommel's panzers.

Fredeye
Feb 21, 2008, 07:39 PM
All true...and I forgot about those big radial motors they used. That would require a lot of verticle space.

The T-26b (Chinese Army)

http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/china/nationalist-t26.jpg

88 (some sources state 87) of these Soviet tanks were supplied to China between 1938 to 1939. Most were formed into the 1st tank regiment that was assigned to the newly forming 200th Infantry Division, the only motorized infantry formation in the Chinese Army at that time. Weight: 10.5 tons. Armament: One 45 mm gun and one bow mounted MG. Some had a second MG for AA purposes.

The IS-2 (Chinese and Korean Army)

http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/china/Chi-JS2-Korea.jpg

North Korean IS-2 tanks were used in the Korean War. A regiment of Chinese IS-2s was available for use as well, but saw no service there.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/is2_china_OMV.gif

After the Korean War, China had attempted to reverse-engineer the IS-2/IS-3 as Type 122 medium tank. The project was cancelled in favour of the Type 59, a copy of the Soviet T-54A.

Can I put in a request? Would you also color-convert Wyrmshadow's Tiger I (early)? Its original color is a little bit on the blue side. It would be nice if it was Feldgrau...
On second thought, Ares, never mind my request. Y'all see why... ;)

You should have told me 24hrs earlier. I have already converted the unit for you. Anybody interested in me posting it anyway?

Oh... well don't let me stop you now!

I won't stop doing what I was doing either... :D

It's posted.

@TopGun: I know you're making your own Tiger now, but next time tell me sooner, please. It was quite annoying to grant a request and then find out it's not needed anymore.

I apologize. I didn't know you'd get started right away and I had begun to work with the model I got from Wyrmshadow only late last night.
Well, there's definitely going to be use for both grey Tigers (yours and mine). Who knows, mine may be completely inferior to yours... it'll be my first tank, you know. ;)

Bollocks, I can't make tanks myself, I just recolor them - not much of a talent. Wyrm is the artist here. Besides, I'm not angry... but I might have some requests myself. ;)

Noted, Steph. ;) Now I got what you meant earlier.

@all: Thanks for your comments!

Well, there's definitely going to be use for both grey Tigers (yours and mine). They don't both have to be grey. One could be desert tan for North Africa, or a wierd camo scheme for the Russian winter...

Hey guys. Any chance you would be interested in doing any of the following units for my WWII scenario I'm making. I would like the following units (in order of importance) in what I call a european camo (green/brown/black) package similar to wyrmshadow's night panther. The following units are all by wyrmshadow.

StuG X Krokodil
E-100
E-50
Jagdpanther

If you would be able to do any of these that would be awesome. Thanks!

Sorry, but this won't work. You would need to re-texture them to get the results you want.

Steph

You could always recolor them pixel by pixel :mischief:

Okay guys,

one new bird for you!

I've recolored Wyrm's fantastic Avro Vulcan (one of my all-time-favourite birds) and gave it a grey/green paint as used in the 1960s - and even as late as in the 1980s (Black Buck missions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Black_Buck)).

Download on first page, as usual. ;)

Thanks to Wyrm for the original unit!

Ares, I was wondering if u have any plans to recolor Ripptide's FV101 & FV501 vehicles into a nice green paint?

Ares de Borg

Yes. ;) But there's no ETA.

You mean FV510? :D (see below)

The database came long after he bugged off. MarineCorps uploaded all of Ripp's stuff himself.

Right but as Ares pointed out the FV-510 does not appear to be anywhere. I've searched all of MarineCorps uploads as well as Ripptide's unit list.

Oz, just curious why you attached it as opposed to adding to the db.

Force of habit + laziness. :)

As Ares has kindly done the db part, I'll eliminate it from this thread.

Its nice to see it in action in the desert of Iran, but wouldn't be good idea to keep some green ones on stock, just in case we run out of green paint when a war breaks out in a green forests somewhere ;-)

I've made some experimences and it is possible to recolor them. The units are pretty aged, though, so it would only be an interlude until someone makes a new and better version (Wyrm?).
