The CIV Gold Team is proud to announce the upcoming release of CIV Gold!

CIV Gold is a civilizations mod for Civ4 that combines some of the most popular user-created civilizations, while applying standards for graphics and content across the board. It can be used as a standalone mod to give users more options in their games, or it can be used by mod-makers to add a “plug-and-play” civ component to their projects.

With CIV Gold we are attempting to create the “definitive” civ add-on for users and mod-makers, alike. There are some great civ combo packs out now, but none that apply universal standards across the board. This pack is meant to be focused, complete, and comprehensive.

Each new civilization in CIVGold has:

- fully animated leaderhead(s)
- re-skinned unique units
- full graphics for buttons and unit flags
- complete pedia entries for civ, leaders and units
- representation of at least two people in the "Great People" lists
- unique "First Contact" diplomacy text based on actual quotes or cultural proverbs

Many thanks to the original authors who had included several of these components in their releases.

Civilizations included in CIV Gold:

Aborigines (exclusive)
Abyssinia
Albania
Austria
Babylon
Canada
Carthage
Celts
Iroquois
Korea
Maasai
Maya
Netherlands
Nguni (Zulu)
Poland
Portugal
Scotland
Sumer
Turks
Vikings

Scheduled Release Date: Tuesday, April 4 2006 (...or earlier if we can!)

Watch for it in the New Civilizations sub-forum, along with a detailed FAQ that will hopefully address whatever questions or concerns you may have.

That is an excellent group of Civs, well-balanced across the map, and across time for that matter. The only one I would say is definitely missing is the Byzantines, and I'd also like to see a Polynesian civ (one of the most fascinating empires in history). You also got rid of most of the dubious civs from the SevoMod, namely the Caribs and the Bretons.

Nicely done.

Arkaeyn, I'm glad you like the selection. I can assure you that future versions will include many more civs.

Regarding the Byzantines, don't you think they're represented enough by the Greeks and the Romans? I could be wrong, but the way I see it the Byzantine Empire was essentially the Greek part of the Roman Empire. To add the Byzantines in addition to the two former civs just seems redundant to me, especially since many of the city names would overlap.

I guess my only question is how would it work with the older Sevo mods? The Civ content in the Gold mod is better, but would we be able to use the other mods that were in the others, like the promotions and Wonders, etc

Nope, Polish Heavy Hussars. They wore "wings" as a means of defense and intimidation.

Brillliant - I really like to see people working and pulling things together, especially when it comes to people helping others with their mods. And it sounds a very comprehensive full effort add-on to the core game.

Really looking forward to playing this. I'm sure there are many civvers out there a little sick of the same opponents but looking for good quality mods to add some extra flavour to the game.

Congratulations and thank you to the team.

EDIT: For those wondering about Sevo's mod - in its thread he's indicated that a new version incorporating Civ Gold should follow in a few weeks. Sevo you are a champion.

This sounds like the perfect addition to my CivMore (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=163596) mod! I was planning on adding more civilizations and more leaders, but I have some standards that I am trying to abide by (such as animated leaderheads), and I wasn't quite sure how I was going to possibly create all of the necessary artwork in any kind of reasonable fassion! Great work, and I eagerly anticipate it's release!

Animated leaderheads? Now there's something I've been looking for for months :goodjob:

Finally I'll be able to remove the Qin Shi Huang, Kublai Khan, Montezume, etc graphics from my ancient ME scenario...

Hope I dont offend anyone but those winged units is... rather wierd. But you learn every day, havent a clue about those units exicted (with the winged costume that is). Still I wonder how common that configuration was, did every polish hussar have those? Did a wast majority of the hussars use them to valid the unit on civ to be represented with wings?

You'll find out a little more about the unit if you read the civilopedia entry for it once the mod gets released ;)

Soon my friends, soon!

one question:
is it possible (if it don't makes too much work, i don't know...) to give the Hussars a (hollow) lance instead of a sword?

Their primary weapon was a 4˝ to 5˝ metre long hollow lance, which was some 1.5 metres longer than the old knights lances as well as being much lighter due to their hollow construction. This allowed a much longer reach, especially useful against pike and yet avoided being too cumbersome.[...]

Certainly in terms of city names, the Byzantines aren't very distinct. However, the main defining traits for civilizations in Civ IV are:

1) Traits
2) UU

In both of those categories, I think the Byzantines deserve to be as different from the Greeks and Romans as any other European Civ.

We are looking ahead to adding other civs. The FAQ addresses this - it will be available with the final version soon.

The short story is that we needed to cap the number of civs to be sure to organize ourselves properly. If this release is well received, then we can look at expanding.

For the record, Israel, Brazil and Sweden haven't been forgotten. :)

While it's true that the Byzantines were kind of the Greek wing of the Roman empire, they aren't well-represented in Civ, I find. If you examine their timeline, they had a major empire from roughly 200 CE until 1450 or so. That's not just a long time, that's probably the longest-running empire in human history.

As for having similar locations and cultures but different Civs, Civ 4 kind of does, with Kublai Khan, who was as much Emperor of China in the Yuan Dynasty was he was a Mongol. There's also the Americans, who came from displaced English. The Byzantines are also seriously lacking in units and leaders - if you added Constantine or Justinian to the Roman leaders, or made the Roman unique unit Cataphracts or Dromons, maybe.

Sevo, I liked the Carib music too - maybe someone should put together a non-European music mod. Bach and Beethoven are cool and all, but let's get some steel drums!

Do you really expect anything less with a mod this cool?

Shqype
Apr 03, 2006, 09:31 PM
if you added Constantine or Justinian to the Roman leaders
And it can be argued that those 2 leaders were (ethnically) Illyrians, which are represented by the Albanians in this mod.

The Byzantine Empire did last a long time, but near its end it wasn't an "empire" anymore. In 1453 Constantinople fell, but that's pretty much all that was left of the Byzantine Empire... there wasn't an "empire" but a Despotate of Morea to the south, an Albania and a Bulgaria to the west, an Ottoman presence to the east, etc. Out of curiosity, when did the Byzantine Empire begin its decline, and what territory was it made up of?

Arkaeyn
Apr 03, 2006, 10:09 PM
Well...the "ethnic" makeup of particular leaders opens up a whole can of worms. Arab leader Saladin, for example, is a Kurd. Alexander is Macedonian more than Greek - and speaking of Greeks, I'm very happy that Cleopatra is gone. Having the Albanians is certainly an interesting choice.

I don't know much about the fall of the Byzantines, as most of my knowledge comes from a book I read about their history up to 800. Here's Wikipedia: Fall of the Byzantine Empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_empire#Decline_and_fall_of_the_Byzantine _Empire)

Wikipedia places its decline around the death of Manuel I Comnenus, who controlled Greece, much of Turkey, Hungary, and invaded Italy and Egypt. Hey - good old Wikipedia has a map (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Manuel%27sEmpire.png), too!

I tend to view Constantine, Justinian, Theodora, etc as Byzantine rulers. As for a Unique Unit, there is the Varangian Guard and Pechenegs (cavalry archers)

Is this ETA still valid? I keep lurking these forums for any updates... (I’m at work so there isn’t much more to do, at least nothing important)

Having 3 different updates all expecting to arrive soon is very promising Civ4 Gold, Sevos 3.0 (that I recon is same as gold but with game play changes), and Thamis 1.7 version.

The Winged Hussars were the elite heavy polish cavalry, unmatched by any other cavalry till the end of 17th century. They were very expenisve to equip and the traing (both of ppl and horses) took a lot of time, so they were not many in numbers.. Their strenght was in their tactics (winged hussars played a role of breaking enemys ranks, just like tanks in the 20th century). Here are some refrences you migh find interesting :]

nice links, but as a swede is not fun to read about swedish military failures (Poland-Sweden war 1600-1611), I guess we lost due to lack of angel costumes! j/k ;) dont flame me, could´t resist I have the outmost respect for the Polish, and the hussars.

yap, you lost, coz we catholics like to go to war dressed up like angels :P seriously, the wings were just a small addition to the "winged hussars" equipment. They were recognized because of them and they were the symbol of the soldiers high social status (they recruited from rich nobles). There are 2 main versions as of why they wore them in battle:
1. as someone mentioned earlyier it helped to prevent tatar raiders to catch a hussar on a rope
2. the feathers on the wings made a laud noise while the hussars were charging at the enemy, the noise was supose scare enemys horses and soliders (shock tactics effect similiar to the ju-87 stuka bombers sirens)

Crazy Polish people...

(I have a Polish girlfriend; mentioned this to her, and of COURSE she knew about it. The amount of pure book knowledge they have to cram in Lyceum (kinda highschool) is intimidating. But still, riding to war with wings... crazy Polish people.)

Aaaaarghhhh :D

Can't wait until this comes out. I decided to try this out and stopped playing my previous game a couple of days ago. have to blend it in with my own mod which mainly consists of small xml tweaks though. Now it seems I'm just wandering back and forth from my PC to see if its out yet.

Maybe I should go read a book instead :crazyeye:

Anyways - sounds like a great mod guys!!

Yup. But look for it closer to 5:00pm EDT. Shqype is currently doing final testing as we speak, and I'm going to head home at lunch to give a last look-over and prepare some notes.
