View Full Version : African Diplo Preview

I want to create a diplo interface not unlike the ones I done previously for the Celts, Aztecs and Maya. This one, however, was requested by Plotinus and must have an African theme.
I have to say it's a challenge. I'm not very familiar with african design so I will definitely need some helpful suggestions and ideas from our wonderful community. :)

First rough sketch. Don't mind the messiness - this is just a mock up.

Any suggestions, Mate? ...Or if you happen to have a big bag of African images and/or emblems lying around, that'd be cool too!

shouldnt it just be called egyptian...? or did you mix graphics of other african cultures?

well...
North African and Sub-Saharan africa are totally different.
Having Egyptian icons and Sub-Saharan icons is like having Russian icons and Chinese icons, or Arab-Turkish icons and Japanese icons on a "Asian Diplo Preview"

exactly, but this still looks good!!!

The leapord skins, and maybe some zebra skins.

But over all that's freaking good!! :dubious:

Like others have said, it's good, but not sub-Saharan African. :)

It'll come in handy if any of the Egyptian scenarios come online again.

well if your going to make it egyptian then change those african things. If your going to make it african get rid of the egyptian stuff

It's for Plotinus. I thought it had to be representative of all Africa. It is quite a difficult balance to acheive. Thanks for the input, guys!

If it's for his Mountain and Desert scenario, you could stick to motives from the Sahel/Sudan area and Ethiopia.

Traianus
Apr 07, 2006, 03:19 AM
I'm pretty sure that's the one. Thanks.

can you make one for rise of asia?
if so focus on east asia (China, Korea, Japan)

Traianus
Apr 07, 2006, 03:39 AM
I'd love to have a go at that but I think it will be down the line. This one will probably take a month or two(just ask TLC!) and I'm spending a lot of time on the Gallic Wars mod with little help.
Remind me when this one is finished, will you?

It looks a bit like a mixture of many african cultures (egyptians & central & south africans).

But I don't see any problems with that (or maybe the human-headed eagle on top of the image is a bit much... )
Good job, T.

Thanks aaglo. That's what I was trying to with the mix. I guess the most important opinion has yet to be given and that's Plotinus.

Sorry to get to the thread so late!

Thanks so much for doing it, Traianus. Looks great. I especially like the upright elements at the extreme left and right, and the ones on the left and right of the LH area. Although I must agree with TLC that I don't think it looks quite right to have the Egyptian elements in there. Yes, I want it for the Desert and the Mountain, which is principally sub-Sahara - West Africa across to Ethiopia. Egypt features in the scenario, but only under Arab control, so the ancient Egyptian motifs are out of place. It would be better to have things from (say) Mali, Nigeria, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

I think I gave you this link (http://www.hamillgallery.com/index.html), which has a lot of African art that could perhaps be made use of. I also found some some more here (http://www.artfromafrica.com/afahome.htm) and some Ethiopian art here (http://www.ethiopianart.org/contents.html). Good shots of Benin bronzes here (http://people.uvawise.edu/roots/imagefiles.html). I found another great Ethiopian art site before, which I raided mercilessly for tech icons and the like, but I can't find it now! There's plenty more, of course. I'm not very good at knowing what would work for these graphics (having tried this sort of thing before, with indifferent results) but I think there's a lot of potential. Thanks again!

No problem. I'll have another preview ready soon. Thanks fro the links. I'm sure they'll help.

And now the BIG question ......

Will you do a Chinese set afterwards ? (the TianXia scenario would really need some artwork !).

Has already been asked for earlier in the thread - well, am east asian one. As i said then - when this one is finished, give me a shout.

Like others have said, it's good, but not sub-Saharan African. :)

It'll come in handy if any of the Egyptian scenarios come online again.

One will. Give it time. You know I work on scenarios, just at odd times and not so regularly and I also want to finish ones already advanced (TianXia) and polish already released ones...

But I will post something soon in the thread for the others to discuss. It is just I like to work on my onw for a while then share, exchange, change, decide... (= I am basically a pain).

But some things are tricky since I want to have lux and techs force some civs to recreate their history (Sea People, Hebrews, Kreta).

Well, considering the little feedback I got from beta-testing (not criticizing, just noting) I am definitely not sure.
True I forgot to upload a better biq. Will do that and hopefully will get feedback. Main issue I have seen at the moment is crossbows come too late so it is a tentative no ATM.

I'm back to work on the African diplo and I wanted opinions on which of these options I should pursue. Personally, I think the elephants work better, but what do others think?

Mirc
Jun 11, 2006, 06:41 AM
Well, I can't really say before seeing an ingame screenshot, but my first thought also was that the one with the elephants is better.

I'm inclined to think so myself. Thanks for the input, guys!

Plotinus

These are fantastic! Actually, I think that personally I prefer the figures. But I suspect the elephants might look better in-game. Either way, these are really excellent, and just the kind of thing I need. Thank you!

You are welcome! Interesting to hear your opinion. I might try two versions.
As always, if you see any graphic you think might work. let me know as material in this theme is a little scarcer than others I've done.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to go with the one with the carved wooden breasts.
