View Full Version : So, What have You named Your Starships?
W.i.n.t.e.r Apr 11, 2006, 06:49 AM Hello everyone. Seen this topic up at Paradox Interactive (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=238392) and thought it'd be nice to know "what wild names have you given the things and what are they like? Did you call something the dreadnought class and it got mauled? did you make something you thought would be duff , named it firefly and it annhilated everything?"
I myself am still on the lookout for good name themes :)
Artagel Apr 11, 2006, 09:26 AM I designed a medium hull defense based ship (only gave it a single offensive weapon) in order to put it in fleets with more offensively rigged ships. I named it 'Porcupine' . In any case, for some reason, it performed better in battle than the pure offensive ships...
Supreme Shogun Apr 11, 2006, 10:06 AM I haven't been too creative about naming, I used to use names of swords (Sai, Tanto, Katana, No-Dachi, Dai-Katana, etc.. ) and I went to a naming convention like Hvy Fighter M4-0-4 so that I know in the name the attack, defense and move respectively..
from tiny to huge I go, Fighter, Hvy Fighter, Frigate, Battleship, Dreadnought
or if I'm feeling really dominant may give my dreadnought a mythological name or something sometimes..
Pentium Apr 11, 2006, 12:12 PM hm... I haven't renamed a single ship yet, and my desings are always named <hullsize> (<speed>)<const/freighter/fighter><number>, so they're like Med F1, Speed 7 Freighter, Large F2 (F standing for Fighter).
Creative, huh?
W.i.n.t.e.r Apr 11, 2006, 01:50 PM hm... I haven't renamed a single ship yet, and my desings are always named <hullsize> (<speed>)<const/freighter/fighter><number>, so they're like Med F1, Speed 7 Freighter, Large F2 (F standing for Fighter).

LoL- I've seen worse, like some guy who thought a Destroyer to be larger than a Cruiser :D
My ship class names are still subject to change, for I am still not really fond of what I got this far- I kinda lack a proper theme. Right now Mystic places and creatures are it. What will stay:
- Freighters: Atlantis Class, upgrades are named after Earth's Continents. I thought that for a vessel that travels huge distances "Europe", "Asia", etc would be quite fitting. Atlantis is said to have been the lost continent in the days prior to our history.
- Huge Freighters: Avalon Class (also a mystical lost place of our jolly ole planet and home to mighty spirits- fitting for an armed merchantman with 48 base hitpoints ;))
- Tiny Hull Scout/Fighter: The Mantis and Manticore Classes (I made two almost identical ship types here, only that the Manticore variant has a Drengin hull covering the Terran canopy. Since I really only made the Drengin one as a test I will most likely give its name to the terran fighter, while keeping the Mantis for the scout. Here I have moved further towards mysticism: Mantis is derived from the ancient Greek word for "prophet". Manticora also derives itself from ancient Greek, borrowing from ancient Persian, where its name translates to "eater of people" a type of Chimera.
- Medium Hull Destroyer: Chimera Class (Lohengram's early destroyer was called Chimera, and I copied his work quite extensively and built up on it and gave it the name "Cordoba" Class. Since I am moving more into mystical creatures and away from battle sites, as initialy intended, I may as well give my improved 'Chimera' back its original name.
-Huge Hull Battlecruiser: Tiamat Class. Tiamat is a primal monster/goddess in Babylonian and Sumerian mythology, a destructive dragon-like titan and first having been given life, to bare life to the gods of men (and to be eventualy slain by their hand).
-Huge Hull Battleship/Dreadnought: The Tarasque Class is the mother of all battles- at least in my part of the galaxy ;) "The Tarasque was a fearsome monster tamed in a legendary story about Saint Martha. Legend has it that the creature inhabited the area of Nerluc in Provence, and devastated the landscape far and wide. The tarrasque features in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, in which it is quite possibly the most powerful monster in existence. The tarrasque (usually spelled here with two rs) is a gargantuan creature that beheads its foes with its claws and fangs, resists almost all weapons and magical spells, regenerates, and can only be permanently slain by the granting of a powerful magical wish after overcoming its potent defenses."
more to come...
Pentium Apr 11, 2006, 03:18 PM LoL- I've seen worse, like some guy who thought a Destroyer to be larger than a Cruiser :D:crazyeye:
Well, the destroyer is there to destroy, and the cruiser to cruise. Larger things destroy smaller things. Ergo, Destroyer must be bigger.
W.i.n.t.e.r Apr 11, 2006, 04:04 PM :crazyeye:
Well, the destroyer is there to destroy, and the cruiser to cruise. Larger things destroy smaller things. Ergo, Destroyer must be bigger.
indeed- that must be the logic behind it
Selous Apr 11, 2006, 06:24 PM i tend to get "inspired" by some of my ships for names, otherwise i use boring names like Light Fighter Mk1 ... and when i upgrade the design it will become a Mk2 then 3 and so on .... the inspired names also get this Mk tag on the end
Gunner Apr 11, 2006, 07:27 PM I always name each of my frigate (medium size hull) ships something that starts with 'R'. Things like Retribution, Redemption, Restitution, etc. I started doing it even back for GalcivI  I then generally pick a theme to name my bigger ships after for each game. Below the medium hull size I just give each class of ship a unique name but don't rename each individual.
Duelingground Apr 11, 2006, 10:15 PM My ships are named as follows:
Tiny/small hulls are named for insects, dependent on their weapon loadout.
For example:
A beam weapon fighter:
Flea LV-WIII, where the LV=Laser 5, and the WIII=Warp engine 3
The same sized hull, carrying missiles(which I rarely use):
Scorpion SIV-WIII, where SIV is Stinger 4.
Medium hulls are named after birds of prey(Falcon, Eagle, etc.), large hulls are named after vicious mammals(Wolverines, Grizzlies, etc.), and the huge ships are named after rapacious humans(Mongols, Vikings, etc.)
The names are really just cosmetic, letting me identify the hull size at a glance, the alpha-numeric designation lets me know exactly how fast and well armed they are.
Constructors, Troopships and Freighters are called just that, followed by the same letters and numbers as warships, though I rarely arm them. In my current game, I have started notating the number of modules on each hull, by adding a roman numeral directly after the name, so that a Troopship with 4 modules and warp engines would be: TroopshipIV W.
Commodore Apr 12, 2006, 12:27 AM I like to try and incorporate a civilization's backstory in the names of my ships.
For example, the Torians fought a guerilla war to free themselves from the Drengin occupation of their homeworld; so I give their ships names like Insurgent, Freedom Fighter, Liberator, etc., etc.
Vizzini Apr 13, 2006, 01:28 PM I got creative, then after a few games I got smart. :p
I deleted all my ship designs and now just do "Tiny Gun Defender v1" "Small Missile Defender v2" "Colonizer v1" etc.. there's a generic design for each increase in weapons and/or engine tech and I make sure to "obsolete" any stock or out-of-date design as soon as it crops up. Makes starbase build queues a lot more manageable.
JavalTigar Apr 14, 2006, 02:33 PM I have been using Star Trek names,
voyager - survey scout
akula - missle boat
kobiashi maru - freight
constitusion - medium defender
alaska - battle cruiser
excelsior- battleship
Arkanin Apr 14, 2006, 06:18 PM When I have a massive hegemony over the galaxy and its obvious I need to knock the difficulty slider up, I like pushing my military techs to an extreme and giving my ships mythical-sounding names, since that's about how they are. :)
Kamilian Apr 14, 2006, 09:44 PM in the first game i played, ships that i had built from my most-powerful-customized class of ships as well as some of the secondary-powerful ships, i named them, based off of ships from Andromeda TV show (cuz i'm a hardcore fanatic of it ;)):
Andromeda Ascendant
Wrath of Achilles
Balance of Judgment
Resolution of Hector
Crimson Sunrise
Renewed Valor
Twelve Centuries
Million Voices
Pax Magellanic
as for the actual ship-class names:
Stinger
Claw
Claw-Fighter (a smaller version of Claw)
Slicer
Swarmship (for my invasions - the transport)
Basilisk
Talon Cruiser
Talon Fighter
unfortunately the Altarians declared war on me - the third war with them - and my economy was at that point in a slump so i couldn't churn out the best of the best, and i had adapted my ships to their largely-laser-weaponry far too late to save me and, sure enough, my empire withered away. i was down to Altaria (i had taken it at the end of the first war) and then the bastards retook that planet as well and thus finished me. :( but it was still fun as hell... it was even fun to watch as my Talon Cruisers, the most-advanced other than the newer, anti-laser, ships, were destroyed. the space battles are pretty interesting
Tboy Apr 16, 2006, 06:14 AM For ships, I just put the name of the ship (e.g. Mosquito class) then put for each size:
Tiny - Fighter
Small - Hvy Fighter
Medium - Frigate
Large - Cruiser
Huge - Battleship

Gunner Apr 18, 2006, 05:24 PM I just got the idea of naming Defenders Spearman, then Swordsman, all the way to Tanks :p
Hahaha, thats great!

Drat, cruisers are bigger? I'll switch them around then. Thanks for letting me know!
Tboy Apr 19, 2006, 07:03 AM I just name ships (before their class, that is) after what they have, or what they look like. For example, I called one of my ships that had huge 'claws' 'Lobster', and an upgraded, faster scout ship 'Zipper'.
W.i.n.t.e.r Apr 19, 2006, 05:35 PM Just added two more vessel classes to my shipyard, both using the same basic hull:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ea/Roc8954.jpg
- Cargo Hull Colonizer: The Phoenix Class, staying true to the mythical creatures theme, the Phoenix is a perfect image for a ship that builds up new life [out of its own ashes]. (In ancient Egyptian mythology and in myths derived from it, the phoenix is a mythical sacred firebird.
Said to live for 500, 1461 or for 12594 years (depending on the source), the phoenix is a male bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in Heliopolis ("the city of the sun" in Greek), located in Egypt. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — a symbol of fire and divinity.(...) Although descriptions (and life-span) vary, the phoenix became popular in early Christian art and literature as a symbol of the resurrection, of immortality, and of life-after-death.
Originally, the phoenix was identified by the Egyptians as a stork or heron-like bird called a benu, (see Bennu), known from the Book of the Dead and other Egyptian texts as one of the sacred symbols of worship at Heliopolis, closely associated with the rising sun and the Egyptian sun-god Ra.)
- Cargo Hull Constructor: The Roc Class- another very fitting mirror of a being that is able to lift [and fly away with] even heaviest of weights with ease legendary ease. (A roc or rukh (from Persian رخ rokh) is a mythical white bird of enormous size and strength that is reputed to have been able to lift and eat elephants. The origin of the myth about the roc is unknown, and it is possible that the myth originated from an actual bird, with references to it being known from early as the 8th century from Middle-Eastern authors. There are reported sightings of this bird as recently as the 16th century by an English traveller who visited the Indian Ocean.)
--------------------------
Footnote: "The roc is hardly different from the Middle-Eastern `anqa "عنقاء" (see phoenix)" Wikipedia - So I'd say this fits those two craft of the same hull type to a T.
Drakan Apr 21, 2006, 02:57 AM Custom civ: Drakons
Custom Homeworld: Drakonia
Currency: Draks (drakis) ;)
superscout (reconaissance only)
Transport 1-3

Flybite 1-3 Small hull size
Starhunter Small hull size
Hunter Wolfmark I-II-III Medium Hullsize
Battlehammer I-II-III Large Hullsize
Staruler 1-3 Huge hullsize
Custom Civ:
+30 Growth
+30 Military Production
+30 Improvements/ Social production
+15 Soldiering
+6 Logistics
+6 Loyalty
Industrialist party which adds a further +20 social production and +20 military production.
Oda Nobunaga Apr 23, 2006, 09:17 PM As for Destroyers larger than Cruisers, blame George Lucas. His Imperial Star "Destroyers" (more like Battlecruisers if not outright Battleships...) have done so much harm it's not even funny.
Supreme Shogun Apr 25, 2006, 12:53 AM I just got the idea of naming Defenders Spearman, then Swordsman, all the way to Tanks
Let the legend of spearmen defeating tanks live on
Farae May 04, 2006, 07:39 PM I named my best laser based capital ship class the Via Atari. I named a different, all around capital ship class with LOTS of little parts on it the Eukarya. I named my first mass driver based mediumsized capital ship class the Argonne. My high capacity, but well armed transport class was the Argo Combat Transport. My fastest scout class was the Roma (all roads lead to Rome).
And my favorite, an immensely powerful missle based class with high armor in all classes and secondary attacks in laser and railgun attacks, I called it the Sentas Crisca.
Goldflash May 11, 2006, 04:03 PM While Playing as Humans my naming scheme is as follows:
Tiny hulls are Fighters, and I usually name the class after swords. The indvidual ships I orginize into squadrons of only fighter which are named after a color. The ships in the squadrons's Call signs are The Color then a number designation. The first fighter is One, the second is two, etc.
Small hulls are destroyers. They are named after cities on Earth. Dome times I follow a scheme like all the ships of a class are named after cities near the city name of the class, or that start with the first letter of the class.
Medium hulls are frigates. They are named after countries, peoples, and ethnic groups.
Large Hulls are cruisers. They are named after famous people, usualy generals, military theorists, or warriors.
Huge hulls are battleships. The have Inspirational names like "Dauntless", "Invincable", "Victory", and "Honor".
W.i.n.t.e.r May 12, 2006, 05:29 AM So, I finaly implemented my little mod :) it adds a "big" hull* between "medium" and "large hulls". I have also botten rid off the medium fighter I had (really too many small fishes, never use as many, especialy when playing on huge maps).
So the list is now as follows:
Civilian:
-----------------------------
- Freighter (cargo): Atlantis Class
- Merchantman**: Asgard Class
- Constructor (adv.): Gargantua Class
- Constructor (basic): Roc Class
- Colony Ship (improved): Quetzalcoatl Class
- Colony Ship (basic): Phoenix Class
-----------------------------
Military:
-----------------------------
- Transport (cargo): Pegasos Class
- Long Range Recon (cargo): Unicorn Class
-----
- Fighter (tiny): Mantis (Scout), Manticore (Light Fgt.), Mars (Heavy Fgt.)
- Corvette (small): Horus Class
- Frigate (medium): Cerberos Class
- Destroyer (big*): Chimera Class
- Cruiser (large): Fenris Class (I am still not happy with my cruiser designs- changes to follow)
- Battleship (huge): Tarasque Class (BB), Tiamat Class (BC)
-----------------------------
** 50 HP (Huge Hull with trade module, etc)
Note: Amongst other changes, designs such as the small survey craft "Hermes", have shown to be most obsolete with v.1.1: Its is just too small to carry enough sensors efficiently- and in 1.1 the player is usualy too busy racing to colonize new planets rather than early exploration...
The Avalon Class gave way to the much improved concept of the Asgard Class. I also removed one of my fighter models (the middle one) since there was no real need for it- fighters are either cheap planetary defenders or swift attack craft- no need for a middle solution jack-of-all-trades in between for such a small craft. Instead I made a new ship design to cover the role of post-colonization phase exploration : The Unicorn (click) (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=4034312&postcount=110)
damunzy May 13, 2006, 10:42 PM I use very logical names.
Weaponed Ships:
Tiny = T, Small = S, Medium = M, L = Large .... most games end by this point.
Beam = B, Gun = G, Missile = M
Shield = S, Armor = A, Point Defense = P
Speed = S
Non-Weaponed Ships:
Troop Transport = TT, Constructor = Con, Colony = Col, Freighter = F
Speed = S, Range = R, Troops = T
So, a Medium Weaponed ship with 4 points in Beam, 2 points in Armor, and a 4 Spd would be labeled thusly:
M-B4A2-S4 <- Main Name (can't fit as much as the description because the font is bolded)
Med-Bea4Arm2-Spd4 <- Description (can fit more in here since the font isn't bolded)
A Constructor with 7 Spd and 1.0 Range:
Con-S7R1_0 (have to use underscores instead of periods)
Con-Spd7Ran1_0
A Troop Transport with 7 Spd, carrying 2 thousand Troops, and has a 1.0 Range:
TT-S7T2_0kR1_0
TT-Spd7Tro2_0kRan1_0
I don't normally put range in for Weaponed Ships and Non-Weaponed Ships don't normally have weapons or defenses.
egometry Jun 20, 2006, 02:53 PM I name mine generally with an insect theme for smaller vessels and a marine theme for the larger ones. Ticks early on, then bees, wasps, then generally on to Orcas and Leviathans.
My colony, constructors, and transports get N-col, N-con, and N-t, where N is their speed.
Holiver Jun 20, 2006, 10:04 PM I use names that I've seen that are actually used in the navy (or so I think they are), such as the Oklahoma, Georgia, Odyssey, Sojourn, etc.
I also use fictitious-navy and alien names that I've seen elsewhere, like "The Truth and Reconciliation", the "Pillar of Autumn", the "In Amber Clad" (all from Halo series), and also "The Enterprise" and etc.
It may not be that original, but it beats some of the names I've come up with.
God's Tear. Named as such because it looked like a giant tear drop.
Satan's Fury. Named as such because it looked like a giant flame.
Hell's Gate. Named as such because of the circular gate design of it (and the red and yellow paint job.)
^^^LAAAAAME.
ToV Jun 20, 2006, 11:38 PM Here is a list of basic classes that I am working on. I am costantly looking for new names, so if you have any to add, let me know.
Galactic Civilization II Ship Class
Battleship - A large capital ship with a very high defense value.
Battlecruiser - A fast large ship with high attack and low defense designed to outgun smaller ships and outrun larger ships.
Bomber - A tiny or small ship armed with mass drivers.
Capital Ship - The general term for a medium + ship. Often has a high attack and defense. Usually expensive, so it is a good idea to protect with cheaper escorts. Must have a lower value than the escorts. (Attack / [Defense + Hit Points])
Colony Ship - Cargo ship that can colonize unclaimed worlds and move population between worlds. Should be designed to either have a high speed or a long range.
Constructor - Cargo ship which builds and improves star bases and claim resources. A more expensive version with a higher speed can be designed to claim resources near rival territory.
Corvette - A small, highly maneuverable ship.
Cruiser - A fast medium ship with medium attack and defense, designed to outmaneuver enemy ships.
Defender - A small ship designed to defend worlds from invasion. Requires heavy defense to survive the initial attack. No engines or life support are necessary, as the ship will rarely leave orbit.
Destroyer - A fast medium + ship with a high attack and a low defense.
Dreadnought - A huge heavily defended capital ship.
Escort - A ship (usually tiny or small) designed to protect capital ships. Designed to be fast, cheap, and with a higher value than the capital ship. (Attack / [Defense + Hit Points])
Freighter - A ship to create trade routes. Should have some engines and some life support.
Fighter - The general term for tiny and small ships.
Frigate - A medium ship armed with missiles.
Heavy Cruiser - A fast medium ship with a higher attack than a normal cruiser.
Interceptor - A tiny or small ship with very high speed designed to perform quick attack missions into enemy lands, or to quickly attack invasion fleets before they can reach your planets. Best used in large fleets.
Orbital Cannon - An Orbital Weapons Platform usually armed with mass drivers, although it can be armed with beam weapons. (When designing, it should look more like a space station than a ship)
Orbital Disruptor - An Orbital Weapons Platform armed with beam weapons. (When designing, it should look more like a space station than a ship)
Orbital Weapons Platform - A medium ship designed to defend worlds from invasion. Requires defense to survive the initial attack. No engines or life support are necessary, as the ship will rarely- if ever- leave orbit. (When designing, it should look more like a space station than a ship)
Orbital Missile Silo - An Orbital Weapons Platform armed with missiles. (When designing, it should look more like a space station than a ship)
Scout - A ship (usually tiny or small) designed to explore and to observe enemy lands. Usually unarmed. If armed, do not expect to be involved in any heavy fighting. Requires both sensors and high speed.
Spy Ship - A hull filled with engines and sensors to keep watch on the enemy. A cargo hull is good for this task because of the large amount of space. Do not worry about weapons or defense. It will blow up if you simply look at it the wrong way.
Transport - An unarmed ship to transport troops. Should be as fast as possible, as well as some sensors to make spotting the enemy more easily.
Perfection Jul 16, 2006, 11:34 PM Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Porky... you get the idea.
W.i.n.t.e.r Jul 17, 2006, 02:39 AM "General Spanky", if you please
Hillslam Jul 19, 2006, 03:11 PM I always play humans or altarian.
I tend to use places as names. The idea being these are colony cities or towns or towns from earth that the colonists feel some connection to (the alegory being cities in the new world being named from "sponsor" cities in the old world).
Frigates, corvettes and such get names of towns or shires up to middle sized cities.
Cruisers tend to get names of larger fully metropolitan areas.
Battleships and dreadnaughts get named after counties or states or nationstates.
(I don't often bother with fighters, but when I do they're often named after insects, animals, or actions)
See the ship design thread for some examples.
Zardnaar Jul 24, 2006, 12:19 AM I generally only build ships once I can make them medium size. If I have to build before then because of the AI I just use generic defenders, battleaxes etc.
Medium=Cruiser
Large=Battlecruiser
Huge= whatever (usually Death, Destroyer, Ripper etc)
1 engine sips are generally called Guardian Cruiser/Batttlecruiser while the faster ones are called Strike Cruiser etc. Often I build a limited production run of a handful of ships that are usually named after the weapon system onboard- Harpoon etc. Limited production normally means the weapons are different as I tend to puit all beam, missile, or impact weapons on the same hull instead of mixing them up. If the AI starts using the right defenses I'll build a bigger ship or put more weapons on the ship to compensate or design a new ship and rush produce a few of them.
thagee Aug 01, 2006, 06:31 AM LOL, you'll all no doubt think this very sad, but I have called the custom race I play with the most the Fiscians.
If you were to archetype them as a race, I guess you would look to Startreck and the Ferengi, however I like to think of the Fiscians as being a little more pround and courages than those space rats!
The ships are titled with financial sounding titles for their class:
Small ships - Bridging Finance or Loan
Medium Ships - Investment
Large Hulls - Hostile Takeover
Massive/Huge - Superannuation
Sad I know, but hey it goes with the theme of the race, and thus far the Metaverse has classified them as being Chaotic Nuetral, making shrewd acts of generosity that benefit their cause in the long term e.t.c...
I can't recall their race bonuses and starting techs from the top of my head, if people really care, I can post these next time I play the game.
Thus far I have found that having a strong financial edge certainly makes victories easier as you have the finances to build what you want, when you want and generally run your civilization at 100% production rate as much as possible.
Ok enough ranting. Thanks for reading my 1st post on this forum...ciao
TC4 Aug 06, 2006, 04:12 PM I don't name the ship classes, but I do name the ships
Mostly they are names such as "Imperial War Hawk" or "Imperial Battle Hawk"
W.i.n.t.e.r Aug 07, 2006, 02:49 AM I don't name the ship classes, but I do name the ships
Mostly they are names such as "Imperial War Hawk" or "Imperial Battle Hawk"
What do you do when you field 200-300 ships :|?
mfisher Aug 08, 2006, 11:05 AM My naming conventions depend on the style of play I've adopted for that particular game. If I'm playing Humans, I'll usually resort to either US or British naval ship names ("Dreadnaught", "Invincible", "Independence") for capital ships and aircraft names for smaller ships ("Falcon", "Condor", "Hawk").
If I'm playing an evil race (usually custom), I go for more warlike names. My favorites are "Warlord", "Wargod", "Leviathan", "Dreadstar", "Terrornaut", "Reaper", "Predator", "Raptor" etc.
Later in the game after I have sufficient intel to know what my enemies' ships are like, I might have combinations ships with differing weapons/defenses appropriate to a campaign. To tell the difference between a beam ship and a missile ship, I'll affix "B" for beam, "M" for missiles, "G" for guns (mass drivers). So I can have a Dreadstar B and a Dreadstar M both in production depending on my needs.
Mauritania Aug 23, 2006, 12:54 PM Destroyers:
-Guardian destroyer (armed with mk. III lasers)
-Warrior destroyers (armed with mk. III plasma weapons)
-Jabberwacky destroyers (armed with Doom rays)
Crusiers:
-Thunder Crusier (armed with photon topedeos mk. III)
-Thunder II Crusier (armed with quantum torperdeos mk. III)
-Cahadhri Crusier (armed with black hole erupters)
Battleships
-Mammoth Battleship (armed with Singularity driver mk. IV)
-Python Battleship (armed with Quantum Driver mk. III and Phasers)
-Kraken Battleship (armed with Black Hole Guns and Doom rays)
and my superduper Thorin class battleship whichh had loads of Black hole guns and droom rays one type when I had designed when I had an absoleutly huge minitarisation bonus and a ship I have'nt used since.
W.i.n.t.e.r Aug 23, 2006, 08:59 PM "Jabberwocky"
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
'Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!'
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
'And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
joelwest Jan 25, 2007, 08:03 PM Hello everyone.
I myself am still on the lookout for good name themes :)
. . . however it would not convey any info about the starship it describes.
my GC2 starship names were extremey functional in order to identify them from the 100 other (!!!) similar starship designs.
my system is similar to damunzy, only a bit wordier so all offensive ships, eg, would group together in the ship list.
I use very logical names.
Weaponed Ships:
Tiny = T, Small = S, Medium = M, L = Large .... most games end by this point.
Beam = B, Gun = G, Missile = M
Shield = S, Armor = A, Point Defense = P
Speed = S
Non-Weaponed Ships:
Troop Transport = TT, Constructor = Con, Colony = Col, Freighter = F
Speed = S, Range = R, Troops = T
I don't normally put range in for Weaponed Ships and Non-Weaponed Ships don't normally have weapons or defenses.
such as "stingray 10L12 A3D4", a codename incomprehensible except to its designer (me).
btw, it means offense class "stingray" (as opposed to offense class "stingtank", etc)
with a speed of 10, sensors 12, attack level 3, and defense level 4.
however even this does not describe the ship completely since the offense and defense TYPE are not described (ie, laser or missile, shield or mass deflector).
hence I had to add that tedious detail in the ship description that appears under the ship name.

my suggestion to improve GC2 is to have an option to TURN OFF custom ship design at the start of the game.
it would also be less aggravating if at the start of the game one type of offense/defense could be selected, such as "laser/shield".
these two simple start of the game options would reduce the steep GC2 learning curve and personally would tempt me to start playing the game again.
as it stands I refuse to add yet another ship design to the 100+ I have already created and so I have stopped playing GC2.
Aemilius Mar 22, 2007, 11:33 AM I use number/letter codes only when playing with the :borg: Yor Collective, so light fighter version one is LF-1. With humans I use names of constellations and stars, like Orion and Sirius.
Elite Mar 24, 2007, 05:59 PM My moost treasured(used to be) was my Super Star Destroyer(it worked out pretty well, until I came accross a Yor fleet)
my weakest ships are my TIE Fighter class, along with X-Wing.
the Heaviest ship in my arsenal(slong with being able to carry 1k troops) is the Battlebarge, one ship along is enough to conquer an entire system(provided I have enough troops)
Soniku Apr 01, 2007, 10:05 AM So far I've only played one game, and in that game I've only made two ships which I upgraded with new stuff when I needed :p But I'll share anyway.
The "blade" was a small ship with two laser guns on it (don't remember the spesific things) and smart flack because my rivals seemed to be into explosive things. It went through various developments, generally every time I could fit on more firepower or defense until it was the "blade V" which had two lasers, 2 armour rating in each type and also a missile thing because I seemed to be the only one who had EMP tech.
The "Armada" was made when I finished the medium hull research half way through the games single long war (there were effectively three wars but there were barely two turns between them. I had built up such an economy surplus through selling defense against weapons I didn't use I could simply buy more ships in a couple of turns than the rest of the races had combined) and was armed with 2 defense in all areas, three laser weapons and two railguns. After I realized the enemy was using absolutely no point defense I upgraded to the "Armada II" which had missile weapons instead of railguns as well as a longer range thanks to a better miniaturisation tech.
I won too quickly to really need anything else, although I probably made some glaring mistakes in design because it was my first game XD
