View Full Version : City Names

I don't know how we should go about it, but we should get a system in place for our city names. At doughnuts we named them after doughnut varieties, we could do something similar here and name them after greetings in different languages or after Hawaiian names and places.
What do you think? Any other ideas?

I believ when we discussed this the consensus was for different ways of saying "aloha" so the first one would be "hello" and then "hola" and "Bonjour" which was actually proposed by you here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3713938&postcount=17) I think it's a pretty good idea. Any other suggestions?

:badcomp:-looked at your sig and felt like using it :D

I like the idea of the greeting thing, the only drawback though is when we're talking about cities etc may be difficult to understand

e.g 'hello is building a warrior' it just sounds a bit dodgy in my mind, could we do it how it is done in the demogame and we all propose the name of a city, that way we can still use the greeting thing if people like it or can always have a different name.

I do like the sound of the city of bonjour though.

i think we should do it like in the DG. we could have a thread for proposals, maybe we get 4 or 5 different names, then we vote on it. name with most votes becomes name of our new city. :)

I think different greetings would be fun.
A list of greetings: http://www.elite.net/~runner/jennifers/hello.htm
But skip "Hallo", "Hi" etc. Only use a couple of more exotic, as "Molweni", "Salama".

From what i've read, everyone seems to like the greetings from different languages idea, and Mr.C has provided us with a list of 800 odd. So we should start proposing some of them. If there isn't a clear choice we can always do a team vote.

I'll start off by proposing Bonjour as city 1's name.

Cant we have an English 'Hello' as the first city, just because we all speak it as our first language (i assume).

Next up, naming Units, what shall we be naming them after? in TNT we have a combination of after us playing (im a pikeman:D) and other stuff.

Why not Aloha City as the first one...since we are Aloha

I didn't even think of that, but Aloha City seems appropriate for our capital.

In one of those things that seemed easy but wasn't, i tried to trim down the 800 odd greetings down a bit so it would be easier to get argeement over the names since too much choice can be a bad thing. First i took out names that were too long or too short, then removed multiple entries from the same lauguage, then i exclude names that were very similar in spelling. I also tried to keep an even distribution from around the world. I ended up with a list of 60 odd, so here it is

Allegra

Robi D...That confirms it. You either have no life or work was really boring.

60 names should be enough when we take over the world.

I think when we take over another civ's cities we should use that languages "hello" greeting. So go ahead and lets mark those now so they dont get used...if you guys like that idea and if they are included.

When we take over another civs cities we could rename them to names meaning goodbye perhaps?

MrC

Cities we take over we should name to something like "mine", "my precious", "I was at war with XXX, and all I got was this lousy city!" :D

But I like BC's suggestion more.

I was at war with XXX, and all I got was this lousy city!
I hope you didn't copywrite that, because I am going to steal that in all of my games. That's the best.

 Well i've got a weeks holiday, and it was raining all day yesterday. Orginally i figured it would take an hour at most, which was an every so slight underestimation. Unfortunately i'm one of those people that likes to finish something when its started.
