"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts"

** UNIT FINISHED - SEE PAGE 3 FOR DOWNLOAD **

I thought it would be kinda fun to add a Trojan Horse unit to the game. This unit would be a land unit (wheeled) capable of transporting 2-3 foot soldiers (maybe possibly function as an army)
This unit is for ancient times

Is it possible, after loading the units, to have it not show country's flag (like a privateer)? That is, can you really use it to sneak close to an enemy city?

Willem
Feb 20, 2002, 12:18 PM
Well you can give it a Hidden Nationality, which is what Privateers have now, but I'm not sure if that would also apply to the units inside. The only thing is, that if it is "colorless" then any other civ's units will attack it if they come across it. And I'm not sure what would happen to the units inside if the horse was attacked or destroyed.

You could give it the submarine ability so others can't see it.

Willem
Feb 20, 2002, 12:33 PM
I've read that it has no effect on land units, though I've never tried it myslef.

hidden nat wouldnt suit the horse here.. in civ3, every AI will attack a hidden nat unit...so you wouldnt get anywhere far with it

As a test, I used the editor to make the warrior unit have submarine ability. In the game, i declared war on my neighbor right away. He did not attack my warriors nor could I see his.
Based on these results I think Submarine+Hidden Nationality might be a good combination.

Thank you for that info. I used that ability to great effect in Civ2, but I had read that it no longer worked for land units in Civ 3. It will fit in well with this Sabotuer unit I've added. 2 moves, all terrain as roads, and Airdrop ability, range 8. Though I think maybe Hidden Nationality would be overdoing it. Now I'll have to create a land unit that can spot submarines I suppose.

pesoloco
Feb 21, 2002, 02:41 PM
Yeah, hidden nationality is a bit excessive.

I just thought this might be a fun unit though

Possible Ideas:
- make this a special unit for Greece?

JoeM
Feb 21, 2002, 03:10 PM
A hilarious idea, but seriously how could you ever use more than one? I know the "AI" is dumb but you're really taking the piss now - I can just see them.

One morning in Babylon
"oh look there's a wooden horse, bring it in Hammurabi!....Aaaaaargh!!"

two days later in the new Capital
"oh look there's a wooden horse, bring it in Hammurabi!....Aaaaaargh!!"

ad infinitum...

Perhaps a small wonder...? I mean after all it is a small wonder that those fools fell for it in the first place!

Go for it Pesoloco!:goodjob:

Even better, a wooden rabbit that carries units, except that they always forget to get inside, and the enemy catabpults it back at them! Monty Python rules!

Willem
Feb 23, 2002, 02:50 PM
But if you go that route, you'll have to change the Catapult's animations so that you can see that they're firing dead cows into a city. Not to mention the Knight's animations, to show some guy behind him clacking coconut shells together.

Well you'd have to build a bird house, and the swallows would bring them.

European swallows? But how could a five ounce bird carry a one pound coconut?

Willem

The absurdity of fireing cows from a catapult isnt that far from the truth. Cows might have required the trubechet because of size but Alex the great was know for fireing plague victims corpses over city walls.

It was a common tactic throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, especially during the Crusades.

England could have holy hand grenadiers

Willem

Yeah, and we could have a Zeppelin unit, with the animation showing little people being tossed out of it. And right when it was in the middle of a battle, an animation would start playing showing an elderly couple having tea. Or after a nuclear blast destroys a city, this little truck would start driving around saying "Sorry for the inconvenience!"

kpu979
Feb 25, 2002, 11:46 AM
Engand could also have the killer joke, however it consumes 1/2 of the cities population due to inadvertant peeking. It is loaded onto a helicopter and will destroy an entire stack of enemy (or friendly) units. Any Units nearby will also have a 50/50 chance of survival due to inadvertant peeking. Only workers can clean the mess (like pollution) but will take 13 times as long as they need to be blindfolded.

Willem

And all the Marine units would be dressed in tu-tus. And instead of the Army leader cheering his troops on, he'd be saying, "Now stop that, you hear. I've had about enough of this." And every so often this alien spaceship would swoop down and take away one of your units, fly all around the map, then drop off the unit in the same square he started from.

Lord_Vetinari
Feb 27, 2002, 03:22 AM
You should make cattle a stratecig resource, and then a french special unit could be the cow-catapult, which of course would gain 2x defensive value when combined with taunting (made available with the discovery of silly accents)

I wave my privates at your aunties you silly english pig-dogs

Also, your military advisor would occasionally appear dressed in women's underwear. And whenever the Domestic advisor pops up, there'd be a keyboard shortcut to allow you to squash her with a giant foot, with appropriate sound effects. These graphics would occasionaly be replaced by one showing a 1000 pound weight dropping on her head.

The English would have a new UU called the Twit. It would wander aimlessly around the map for awhile, then pull out a revolver and shoot himself in the head. At which time two little guys dressed in black and carrying a stretcher would appear and take his body away.

The first step to a successful mod would have to be changing all the unit anims so that they walked in a very peculiar manner indeed. And then create a department of funny walks wonder.
To increase movement rate or something.

And there should be Barbarian "suicide squads".

And if the Dark Lord would be bothered posting his lego thingy, that would be QL.

Yes, as soon as they get to your city borders, they all kill themselves.

And there'd be another new unit called "The Hermit".
You'd place him near your borders and if an enemy unit comes near, it will proceed to follow it around everywhere while talking continuosly. The enemy unit will eventually get so annoyed, it will turn around and go home.

The marketplace improvement would be replaced by an Albatross Seller.

I apologize for not posting anything lately. I have been very busy with college lately so I haven't had much time to work on the unit making stuff. The unit will be ready soon.

Upon my return, I discovered that my thread has gone off on a tangent. Monty Python is a funny movie and I like it too. However, I ask that you create a new thread for it. It's for the best interests of both you and me: More people would look at a Monty Python thread than a thread for a trojan horse, and those who want to find out about my unit (the very reason the thread was started) won't have to sift through pages of Monty Python discussion. Please show some respect and start a Monty Python thread. If you build it, they will come, and I, myself, will download it too.

Thanks,

Well sorry about that, but it turned into one of those spontaneous things. And I was having so much fun with it I just wanted to keep going with it. I was kind of wondering how long it would take for someone to step in. I promise to behave myself from now on. :D

I couldn't really think of anything for it to do. It's a wooden horse. Doesn't really move much except for the wheels.
Unless anyone can suggest something?

Razorwing
Mar 01, 2002, 02:22 PM
Yes, animating the wheels is a good idea, and for sounds I think it would be nice with 'creaking wood' sound effects.

What if two very small guys were attached to the unit with ropes, and when it moves, the guys pull the horse forward? When it stops, the guys stop moving, but they may move around a few pixels or look around to liven things up.

Perhaps the Trojan Horse could act as a helicopter for transporting units, and have the stealth ability. It won't be possible to emulate the advantage the horse gives to an attack, but the stealth ability gives a good advantage I think.

By the way, I'm sure there are lots of animated gifs of fires you can borrow from if you want the horse to burst into flames when it is destroyed. Google.com's image databank has been a great resource for me when I hunted icons.

Don't give up on it! By the way, why are there two default flics? One horse seems smaller.

I like the idea of the guys pulling it. Stealth ability makes it less likely to be intercepted in a flight attack. What I suggested before was Submarine ability (makes it "invisible" on land - because there are no default land units with "can see submarines" ability) The fire does look pretty cheap. I hurried thru it to get it done. I'll take a look at the graphics you suggested. It may be a little while tho before I change them cuz I got mid-term exams this coming week.
About the two default files: I didnt realize I put them both in the ZIP. The first one was my original attempt. I changed to the second because the NW,SW,NE,SE animations seemed larger than the N,S,E,W animations. The second one is supposed to be the one that was to be included with the ZIP. I scaled the horse down so it would not look like the size changed when it changed directions. Thanks for the new ideas. Maybe this unit doeshas some hope left.

I don't mind about two weeks, not even 2 months, yet it gets anoying when its between one and a half and 2 years- especially when after an ancient babylonian thread that has already been resurrected from momification, it is bumped every couple of weeks henceforth. I know that new people like to voice their opinion, and I really welcome them to do so, yet I also encourage them to read merely a few thread postings before theirs to find out what the actual topic was before they do actualy post (in our case it was: Stop posting here if nothing new can be brought to bare).

I think a good new feature would be: A thread that hasn't been frequented for 6 months should be closed to posting automaticaly with exception to the originator of the thread him-/herself (always with the possibility of reopening by the originator)!
