SGOTM 01 - Hapshepsut of Egypt

This game will be played in Civ4, patched to v1.61.

This first SGOTM will not feature any advanced variant.. the winner simply will be the team that wins the game at the earliest game date with either domination or a diplomatic victory. All victory conditions are still enabled though, with exception of Space Race, so you have to avoid getting another type of victory (and of course prevent the AIs from winning).

The information required to place you in a suitable team is as follows:-

Which level (noble, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?
Have you played any Civ4 GOTM games before?
Have you played any succession games or Civ3 SGOTM before?
Do you have a group of players you want to play with?

The game will start on May 12.

Here's the start.

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/SGOTM01_start.jpg

Map Parameters
Playable Civ - Hapshepsut of Egypt
World size - Standard
Difficulty - Monarch
Landform - Mystery
Game Speed - Epic

Permanent Alliances are turned on (can form permanent alliances after either communism or fascism is researched)
Space race is disabled.
Egypt is locked into war with Huayna Capac of the Incas.
Egypt is locked into peace with an unknown civilization.

The map is hand built, and therefore may not have a standard configuration.

Please visit the following links to ensure that you are adequately prepared:
Civ4 SGOTM reference thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=168439)

Notes:

A. ONLY Civilization4 v1.61 is supported for this SGOTM. All teams will compete for a single award - the Gold Laurels.

B. All teams must play the sponsored variant - victory will be awarded for the fastest victory by either domination or diplomacy.

C. All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

D. Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

I look forward to seeing how the different teams will approach this game. With many teams playing the same game while discussing tactics and documenting the progress with turn logs, I hope some new game insights will surface :)

After Gyathaar's PM about my problems with floodplains I will afterall sign up. I can see floodplains in black unexplored regions, but no units or anything else. I try not to scroll over black regions but sometimes I still catch a glimpse of them. I will obviously not mention or act on any I do spot but may also be restricted on screenies I post. I do not wish to hide this, so if it is or becomes a problem, please exclude me.

1. I've not played many gemes as I've had problems getting Civ 4 going at all, so Noble happily, just trying my first Prince game which I shall probably lose after an absolutely awful start position that I did well to survive from at all.

2. No (floodplains)

3. Regular Civ 3 SGOTM player

4. Jericho Hill, Igloo Dude, Tauro, Whomp, Admiral K. (and Igor)

I really really want to play this game, but I still don't own a copy of Civ4 :crazyeye: I'll sign up anyway, thinking that I will be able to get one before May 12.

1. No idea whatsoever, never played. Deity level in Civ3 though.
2. No.
3. Yup, played the last three civ3 SGOTMs.
4. Not that I know of, but maybe some of Team Smurkz will find there way here as well (Methos, you around? :)).

This sounds like fun.

I am most comfortable in noble, although I'll obviously be practicing monarch now.:crazyeye:

I've never played a succession game, or any of the games of teh month. I've read this site for several years with great interest, but only recently have been moved by exapseration with the AI's to get involved.

I am upgraded to patch 1.61 on my civ4?

I don't know anyone, so am open to any team that will have me.

1.- What is the timeframe for the whole game?
2.- What should be my time commitment to this game? (I mean, how many days will it take to fulfil its turn to an average player?)
Thank you.

1. There is no set timeframe for SGOTM.. it depends how fast the teams play.. when the signup for the next SGOTM starts and your teams is still playing, you know you are one of the last teams to finish... and the game will close soon
I would guess anywhere from 1 to 3 months for this one..

2. This depends a lot on the team (and the game and if in early game or endgame)... some teams discuss so much between turns that most of what has to be done for next player is already laid out - but this means more time is spent discussing strats in the thread.. it also depends on how fast the team plays.. If they play 10 turnsets in a week it becomes more hours than if only 2 turnsets are done.
When playing the turns most of the time is usually spent writing down what you do (and why) plus taking screenshots than the actual playing.
It could be anything from 30 mins per week to 10+ hours per week depending on how involved you get :)

ok im joining but what is the deadline for completing the game? im limited to play a lot of the days cos i got school + coursework
The guideline is that you should pick up the save within 24 hours of the previous player posting it, and you should post your turn log and save within 72 hours of the previous player's post. This has been found to provide a reasonable level of continuity overall. If you run much slower than this the individual players will lose track of where the game is going and the team will lose focus on its objectives.

As Gyathaar has indicated, we determine the overall guillotine date based on the progress made by the teams, but it will probably last two or three months. Your whole team will be responsible for keeping the game going. Your personal responsibility will be to warn your team when you know you will have a problem playing a set of turns, preferably in advance, so that they can rearrange the player schedule.

If you sign up knowing that you are going to be repeatedly unavailable, and asking for skips, then you are doing your team no favours. They will end up playing your turns and wanting another player ... but that is usually difficult to organise given that a replacement player should not have read any of the other team threads.

@munterpipe: Ten players seems a little excessive, if all of your list signs up. We normally build teams of around 6 people. Do you guys usually play huge maps and marathons? I may decide to limit team size, though it has never come up as an issue before.

This is a fastest-finish-wins game, so if you are trying for the laurels you'll be done in 400-500 turns. (a) You might want to think hard about whether you should handicap yourselves with additional variant rules and (b) ten players will only get four turn sets each.

There is NO-WAY that we will be finished in 400-500 turns. Check out our current chaotic SG (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=159531) for an indication of the likely results we will achieve. Cheers JH. This game looks v interesting, and I'm looking forward to taking part in some discussions with the other players who I haven't been in an SG with yet... Anyway my answers even though I'm not playing:
- I am very comfortable at Monarch. Fast expansion & poor tactical AI makes it too easy.
- I have played 2 GOTMs but not completed them  SGOTM would be good to force me to finish, I have no problem seeing SGs through to the end.
- Have played in some SGs including a diplo win on prince and conquest win on monarch, currently having fun with some barbs and JH

@munterpipe: Ten players seems a little excessive, if all of your list signs up. We normally build teams of around 6 people. Do you guys usually play huge maps and marathons? I may decide to limit team size, though it has never come up as an issue before.

I understand. I really don't think that everybody on the list will sign up.
We have only four players confirmed by now.
Of the other six, one has declined, and one (minionJoe) will only join as sort of an alternate because of lack of time. I'll check with the other four in the next few days, and put up a team then. (hopefully not to large;))
Does that seem ok to you, AlanH?
If there's a lot of interest, we could always split the team in two, right?

Well, I've been debating signing up... while am comfortable playing Civ IV at any level, I do have a phobia about noobing something up and letting down a team of human players. But I think I'll give it a go:

Comfortable: Emperor +
GOTM: Yes
SG: No
Team: Prefer not to play on an extremely competitive team. I'm looking for a team that is willing to relax and learn from mistakes (and share a few chuckles in the process). ;)

Prince, I play Monarch but tend to lose :P It's worth noting that I perform much better in SGs though - I reckon I concentrate more :)

I wanted to ask how the always peace option was enabled with one of the AI. The closest thing I could see was that in the world builder you could set an AI relationship slider to 100. After doing this however, the civilization was still "Cautious" towards my civilization so I am not sure how that feature works.

Have to manually edit the worlbuildersave and set
PermanentWarPeace=(otherteamnumber)
For both the 2 teams/players that you want locked

For Permanent locked war with one civ, you add

I have some questions and comments before I build the draft team lists:

@Munterpipe: There are only three personal sign-ups from the original list you gave for Chaos - you, jeejeep and ruff_hi (and ruff_hi didn't really sign up!). Is this team real?

@ZerrorR: Who is "ex-YU"? No one else has indicated they are in that group.

@akots: You have eight players in Team CFR. They include EsatP who hasn't signed in himself. If he does, are you OK with that large a rotation?

As a general principle I shall NOT include any player in a team unless s/he has signed up here personally.

Self-selected teams of six or more will be left as they stand, on the assumption that the players already know each other and are unlikely to go AWOL.

A number of teams have named five players or fewer. I shall add players with no existing team allegiance to these teams to make them up to a minimum of seven or eight (to allow for drop-outs) unless you tell me you have identified other players, and get them to sign up in the next couple of days.

Other uncommitted players will be allocated to new teams of eight players, again to allow for drop-outs

Can I have my own team?
DO you have any players in mind? Or will you go with my selection from uncommitted sign-ups?

well, if you wish thatI do.

I don't want to define teams that fall apart because the members are not committed from the start, as it's unfair to the rest of that team. It will be difficult to fill vacancies once the game is underway, as incoming players must not have read the other team threads.

As an example. Team Chaos is currently a phantom team. I have no idea whether they are all committed to this competition, whether they are all members of the forums, or even whether they all communicate in English.

Chaos, and your team may well both be secure, but I'm a simple soul and I prefer consistent processes. I also have lots of other stuff to do to get this thing off the ground, so please humour me :p

I tried to find if this question has been asked before but couldn't find any reference ... I am assuming that the game will have the 'locked assets' checked. This means that mods will not work (the one I am thinking about is the logger mod). Is it possible to have the save created under the HOF mod (v1.61_003) so that teams can use the logger if they want to?

Check out page 3 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=168164&page=3), primarily Gythaar’s post #44 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3962730&postcount=44) on. It sounds like locked assets will be used.

I agree on using the HoF mod, hopefully it’s used for SGOTM.

I realised that the new teams have no established structure, so I have made some arbitrary choices of Team Coordinators, highlighted bold in the Team List post. I hope those players will provide me with initial feedback on team names, and any other issues their teams may have. In the absense of any other information, New Teams will be named after the Team Coordinator when the game starts. Team names cannot be changed after 10 May.

@Methos, ruff_hi: Yes, the game will use locked assets. We are hoping to provide you with a logging facility.

4. Do you have a group of players you want to play with? Just anywhere I'll fit in

There are several pros and cons for using the HOF mod..

However, I am more or less 99% certain it wont be used for this SGOTM (for later ones, perhaps... but it might require some changes to it )

I would certainly not go out of my way to get it in just for the logger... I much prefer you players use this game to learn write proper reports without using boring autogenerated stuff (not saying you in particular are using the logger that way.. havent looked up your SG reports, but have seen several people have misued it that way) :)

@Sam_Yeager: Team rosters will be drawn up when you get together in your team threads. The current listings are purely alphabetical.

@ChrTh: Done.

My nominations of Coordinators were only a temporary measure to ensure that teams with no other previous interaction have someone to get them together in the next few days, to work out their pecking order and game plan and so on.

Given the number of new teams we have, I think I'd better open the team threads today to provide rallying and discussion locations, with temporary team names as listed.

@ruff-hi & everyone else: The easist thing to do is make a post in your thread and subscribe to the Maintenance thread. That way you never need to even come to the SGOTM forum to check your teams thread. Thereby removing the curiosity or accident of clicking on another teams thread. All you have to do is than check your User CP as linked on the top left of every page and it'll inform you when a new post has been made to either thread.

To subscribe to a thread click on the Thread Tools above the red bar and below the page numbers at the top of the page and than click on the Subscribe to this Thread. Another page will open up that you click on the proceed button. You subscribe to a thread in this way without having to make a post. Posting in any thread automatically subscribes you to it.

Realize that this is your opinion and preference, and not those of everyone else. Also note that Alt'ing out of civ4 still causes some problems (at least for me) that I'd prefer not to be forced to do. I don't believe it should be the SGOTM Staff who states how we should keep track of our turn logs, but instead a consensus of our SGOTM team. Just my 2 cents.

I realize this.. this is why we if possible will provide the turnlog from the last turnset when you submit the save.

There are other problems with using HOF mod thou..

Letting some teams use it and other not is not really a good option, so this means either everyone or noone uses it..

You say you have problems with alt-tab.. some people crash when the game autosaves and sometimes when they manually save.. how many may get problems when the HOF mod is encrypting the saves? I dont know.. perhaps noone.. if it happens it will prolly happen 1-2 months into the game when the saves get larger...

What do we do if a new bug is discovered that has to do with HOF mod? Currently there is no way of switching to a newer version.

The probably easiest problem to fix is that GOTM webpages atm has no ability to handle saves with HOF mod.

I prefer the safer method and let the normal GOTM games test using the HOF mod first.. :)

Part of the charm of the SGOTM is that it is a spectator sport. We want to allow non-participants access to all team threads so that they can laugh wonder at the skills, ingenuity and lingustic abilities displayed therein. That means we open the threads to guests and non-team members, and rely on (a) good manners by team members and (b) staff vigilance to ensure that players stick to their own threads.

Is there a way we can make it so that the "last post" on the main page or Civ 4 forum doesn't point to a thread in this forum? I'll usually enter a forum from that link out of habit and I'm concerned I may jump into a team's thread by accident. Don't know if it's possible, but it'd be nice.

AlanH
May 08, 2006, 06:49 PM
I don't know of a way. It's pretty fundamental to the way the forums work. I can only recommend care, and using your own shortcuts rather than the navigation arrows in this case. When the Progress and Results Page opens you'll have a link on your team name to the last post in your thread.

If you do hit the wrong thread, as long as you recognise the error fast, hit the back button or close the window, and get straight out, there should be no damage done.

Impressive job Alan...I know what does it mean spending time in "stupid games" for the fun of the others :)

OK. Standby allocation time. DaviddesJ has been snapped up by Peanut to replace Phabuk.

There are three teams with more than one payer missing, and three standby players remaining. So with my trusty dice RNG I hearby propose that we allocate:

Lobsterboy to Team madviking

Memphus to Realms Beyond (was Snaproll)

VirusMonster to Short Straw (was New Team #3)

Please make your way to the departure lounges where your Teams await you.

Good luck :D

Checking in. First SGOTM and didn't know where to look for all the links. Should be with Lunatics. Thank you.
