View Full Version : African Javelineer (9 May 2006)
Plotinus May 09, 2006, 12:58 PM He's African and he's got an infinite supply of javelins. What more do you need to know?

It's not perfect, but I'm still learning! I wanted to make his spare javelins scatter when he falls over, but this proved beyond my abilities. Note: you may see some glitches on his loincloth in the preview here - these are cleaned up in the unit itself. Also, the animation speed is rather better in-game.
[EDIT - 20/10/06] - I've done new Civilopedia icons for this unit. Check out the downloads page to get them.
aaglo May 09, 2006, 01:00 PM
That javelin-throwing animation is quite... um.. athletic :)
I like when he goes all :hmm: in the fidget :D
Yoda Power May 09, 2006, 01:03 PM Wow it's great. Nice animation:goodjob:
ShiroKobbure May 09, 2006, 01:07 PM great unit!
themanuneed May 09, 2006, 01:21 PM Nice unit, I like it ! A little criticism though : shouldn't his arm make a circular movement towards the ground to throw a javelin that far and that fast ?
Rambuchan May 09, 2006, 01:24 PM It seems your modesty was misplaced dear Plotinus. This is a damn good unit! What's really great about it is that there has been most marked improvement between this and the Buffalo Soldier, I mean, Warrior.
odintheking May 09, 2006, 01:59 PM Wow, Plotinus! You definitely have a future in the unit making business, :D.
Goldflash May 09, 2006, 02:36 PM Well, I would say enter this into the Unit contest, but I have a feeling that you have more treats for us instore!
kairob May 09, 2006, 02:53 PM Why dont you make a little mini-library for your units on the unit makers thread, then you would be a proper unit maker,
Just realised that was really patronising, I nearly put another little between proper and unit maker aswell, oh dear.... well in my defence I like to be patronised, so the do unto others thing.... no?.... maybe?.... :mischief:
Roman Legion May 09, 2006, 03:11 PM Nice, Great Job!!!!!
W.i.n.t.e.r May 09, 2006, 03:21 PM Me likez! Especialy the infinite javelins- looks quite good how he grabs them from his back :goodjob:
Stormrage May 09, 2006, 06:32 PM You crazy son of a... I think I`m gonna cry.. no..no.. wait..no..its cool.. No! Wait..wait... its so beautiful

utahjazz7 May 09, 2006, 08:01 PM Great unit, Plotinus. I too like that fidget animation.
Orthanc May 09, 2006, 09:18 PM *points to a bandana around his head*
"Infinite ammo."
Nice unit, maybe the arm doesn't move exactly as it should, but the run, death, fidget are great, and the attack doesn't look totally unnatural.
:goodjob:
Plotinus May 10, 2006, 02:51 AM Thanks for the comments, all. It's most encouraging to get such positive feedback at this stage.
Yes, his arm should really follow through in the attack animation, but I had some difficulty doing this without screwing up the direction of the javelin's flight, so he does look a bit like he's throwing a paper aeroplane. As I mentioned, though, the animations do look better in-game (they all run at different speeds, rather than the uniform one required by the gif preview).
Vuldacon May 10, 2006, 04:37 AM Good Job Plotinus... :goodjob: I see what you mean about following through more when throwing the Javelins... I think the attack looks quite good and no way it looks like he is tossing a paper airplane: lol: Good to see you are striving for detailed accuracy with your units and they are looking Great!
Ares de Borg May 10, 2006, 05:08 AM Hey, that's so... useful and nice and all... You'll now have to do moooore units, you know. ;)
woodelf May 10, 2006, 05:25 AM Infinite javelins are a good thing! Nice unit man.
The Last Conformist May 10, 2006, 05:34 AM Quite nice. :) I trust we won't be seeing any more Maya atlatlmen running around in Central Africa?
On the subject of infinite supplies, do you happen to know how many javelins a warrior would normally be carrying into battle?
mrtn May 10, 2006, 07:28 AM Nice unit Plotinus. :)
...On the subject of infinite supplies, do you happen to know how many javelins a warrior would normally be carrying into battle? From a quite unscientific fantasy book I remember javelineers being able to throw 3 spears before the charging enemy hit them. I doubt that primitive javelineers (ie ones without a big support train) would carry more than a handful.
Snorken May 10, 2006, 11:17 AM Great unit, Plotinus. :)
Grandraem May 10, 2006, 11:51 AM Great unit, Plotinus. Second unit and you're already making really great stuff.:)
Darque May 10, 2006, 12:06 PM Great job. Close to perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Virote_Considon May 10, 2006, 02:03 PM Amazing unit!
Makes me want to add an "Infinate Javelin" resource :D
Bjornlo May 11, 2006, 06:16 AM Nice job.
Good animation.
Good attention to detail.
I like the subtle but effective tribal colors too.
Plotinus May 11, 2006, 07:26 AM Thanks again for the comments, everyone. I'm glad it passes muster even with the more critical members of our community!
Quite nice. :) I trust we won't be seeing any more Maya atlatlmen running around in Central Africa?
Damn right! This unit should at least fit in a little better.
As for javelin supplies, I don't really know, but I suspect mrtn is right. I certainly can't imagine anyone lugging more of them around than this unit. In fact, I suspect that in real life a warrior such as this would probably have only one javelin, and once he's thrown it use a knife or something, but I'm not animating all that!
mrtn May 11, 2006, 07:58 AM Legionaries of the Late Republic and Early Empire often carried two pila, with one sometimes being lighter than the other. Standard tactics called for a Roman soldier to throw his pilum (both if there was time) at the enemy just before charging to engage with his gladius. So if the Romans had two, I suspect other javelineers didn't have many more.
Mithadan May 11, 2006, 10:37 AM Except, I suppose, that the Roman Legionary wasn't a skirmisher per se. I imagine the earlier velites would have carried more than two javelins. If I were to imagine myself as a javelineer, I think once I ran out of javelins I would bugger off pretty quick, only using my knife in the direst of self-defence situations! But then again, my commanding officer might tell me different...
Whatever, I don't care, I just love the unit. If a theologian can do this, what's to keep a philosopher from trying too? Now I want to make units... (don't nobody hold der breath, tho!)
Thunderfall May 13, 2006, 02:01 AM Since when Plotinus started making units?
It does look very nice!
Plotinus May 13, 2006, 02:47 AM Wow, thank you, Thunderfall!
I only just began. Still feeling my way...
