View Full Version : Ethiopian Javelineer (11 May 2006)
Plotinus May 11, 2006, 07:31 AM Another javelineer for your delectation, partially inspired by some of these (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3692858&postcount=16) images. I was annoyed to find a few minor glitches in this one - mostly involving flecks of civ colour where there should be none; I cleaned up the worst of this so it ought to look OK. Despite this, I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out - in particular, I think the attack animation is a noticeable improvement over that of my other javelineer.
Point of interest: you can't really see it on the animations, but he's holding a genuine, authentic, Ethiopian hippopotamus-hide shield!

Download him here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=428).
This unit won joint Unit Of The Month for May 2006 (shared with utahjazz7)!

Grandraem May 11, 2006, 07:33 AM Wonderful, Plotinus. A great addition.:goodjob:
mrtn May 11, 2006, 07:59 AM Hey, this is almost aaglo-speed!
Rambuchan May 11, 2006, 09:41 AM Yeah, juggernaut style!
I like this guy's outfit a lot. Upon seeing these animations again, I'd say that he seems a bit reluctant to die in a hurry as he falls back. Almost like he doesn't want to get his lovely white outfit dirty. But that's just me coming up with something to look for next time. It's still an ace unit, as is the other javelin thrower.
The Last Conformist May 11, 2006, 09:50 AM Even better than the previous unit. :) If you continue like this, you'll soon be giving aaglo and utahjazz7 a run for their money in the competitions.
W.i.n.t.e.r May 11, 2006, 10:06 AM Africa is truely comming to life Man :) nice fidget as well- any more such planned ??
woodelf May 11, 2006, 10:32 AM More endless javelins. :) The shield looks cool and his throwing motion is awesome.
Mithadan May 11, 2006, 10:42 AM I love the white clothing (I always loved those pics!) and I love knowing that the shield is made out of a hippopotamus, even if it's not 'evident at Civ-scale.' ;)
This really is too cool.
Goldflash May 11, 2006, 12:15 PM I particuarly like how the animations aren't exactly the same as the other one. Great!
Ares de Borg May 11, 2006, 12:26 PM Very, very nice unit! Thanks!
Virote_Considon May 11, 2006, 01:24 PM Wow! Now that's a new UU for Ethiopia!!!
Plotinus May 11, 2006, 01:53 PM Thanks, everyone!
Hey, this is almost aaglo-speed!
Don't get used to it, though - it's just because I have a holiday this week, so I have time to try to get to grips with the unit-making process. I'll be back to real work next week...
Upon seeing these animations again, I'd say that he seems a bit reluctant to die in a hurry as he falls back. Almost like he doesn't want to get his lovely white outfit dirty.
You could be right there, although it's hard to tell from the preview animation (which always messes the speed up a bit). But it's easy to fix with Flicster if you want to change it!
Stormrage May 11, 2006, 04:20 PM Plotinus... you rock! `nuff said ;)
TopGun May 11, 2006, 05:03 PM Very nice unit!!! (And I'm not just saying that...) I've always hoped for this one... what great quality!
BadKharma May 11, 2006, 10:53 PM Wow the africans are really getting some flavour as of late great job!
Cimbri May 12, 2006, 11:46 AM Wow. Very nice unit. :)
ShiroKobbure May 12, 2006, 11:52 AM what would this unit replace?
Goldflash May 12, 2006, 12:40 PM In the boring epic game, I would say Either Archer or Longbowman.
ShiroKobbure May 12, 2006, 01:29 PM his clothing doesnt look ancient. What period is his clothing?
W.i.n.t.e.r May 12, 2006, 02:14 PM Ethiopian people wore this until the 40s- not sure since when though...
Edit (1940s that is)
Plotinus May 13, 2006, 02:46 AM He's not meant to be ancient - he could be anything from the medieval to industrial period. So if he went in the epic game, he'd probably replace the Longbowman.
Vuldacon May 13, 2006, 06:55 AM You Greatly improved the follow through for the Attack and I love the Javelin Twirl as it implies that he is an Expert with control. :goodjob:
Daniel Khan May 13, 2006, 10:37 AM Very nice unit.
odintheking May 13, 2006, 10:42 AM Very nice, Plotinus, :goodjob:. What's next on your todo list?
Plotinus May 13, 2006, 11:23 AM Thanks, odin. Next up was actually this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=170824), but next I want to have a go at some religious units requested by Rambuchan. Might take a while, though, because I unfortunately seem to have acquired a pile of work to attend to as well. Damnable work!
Snorken May 14, 2006, 09:36 AM Looks great. :) Are you planning on making any of the other Ethiopian warriors in those pics? Like Mithadan, I've also always liked them.
Plotinus May 14, 2006, 01:24 PM I might have a go at some of them at some point. And yes, I love those pics - difficult to do justice to them at Civ scale, really.
Don't forget that Shiro made the Ethiopian horseman too, which is a great-looking unit.
Mithadan May 14, 2006, 08:36 PM difficult to do justice to them at Civ scale, really.Fair enough.
Those pics are so darn cool I want to buy the Osprey book just for them! (Which Osprey book were they from anyway?)
