View Full Version : Unit Names
I am the Future May 18, 2006, 09:09 PM List of available units and names for that type of unit:
Settler- none
Worker- none
Worker Boats- none
Warrior- Wolf
Updates of new units or name ideas should be posted in this thread.
koondrad May 19, 2006, 11:23 AM Do you want to keep them all themed? Also, at the moment we're prefixing the names with the phonetic alphabet. This was IatF's idea IRC and I think we should continue it.
For those (like me) who don't know it off by heart:
Alpha (NATO puts it as 'Alfa', but the CAA in the UK uses Alpha)
Bravo
Charlie
Delta
Echo
Foxtrot
Golf
Hotel
India
Juliet
Kilo
Lima
Mike
November
Oscar
Papa
Quebec
Romeo
Sierra
Tango
Uniform
Victor
Whiskey
Xray
Yankee
Zulu
Cheers,
ranathari May 19, 2006, 12:01 PM I was going to be boring and just keep the default names for units plus a numeral suffix to distinguish between them. Highly promoted units could get unique names to denote their importance/experience (eg. a highly promoted archer could be called, "Robin Hood", a highly promoted galley could be, "Columbus" etc.)
I am the Future May 20, 2006, 05:54 PM I was hopeing in keeping them all themed to animals, makes it weasier to know what we are talking about. But I guess that isnt neccessary.
ranathari May 20, 2006, 06:56 PM Call me stupid but when you say, "wolf", a warrior isn't really the first thing I think of.
King Flevance May 20, 2006, 09:54 PM Workers should either be Loco*name* like LocoPete or LocoJohn
Anything nautical should be named after monkeys. Like workboats have "chimp alpha" in the name. And Battleships be "Alpha Gorrilla" in the name. Air craft carriers be "alpha silverbacks" and caravel be "spidermonkey Aplha" Something like that.
Just some ideas. :)
Karl Townsend May 21, 2006, 04:45 AM how bout we make the names of the the members of our team
eg worker = Karl Townsend
warroir = Koonrad
etc etc
koondrad May 21, 2006, 04:59 AM I think the only units that should have unique names are naval vessals, in which case we could name them after cities or members.
@KF - Lmao, nice one.
EDIT: Actually, why don't we just give them proper military names and units?
EDIT2: As in ones made up to suit Locopetamia.

IDK, I still like the idea of nameing units after animals. Like, say we have archers be Alpha Hawk, Bravo Hawk, etc.; then name workers Alpha Ant, Bravo Ant, etc.; maybe have musket men be Alpha Bear, Bravo Bear, etc; then tanks Be Alpha tiger, Bravo Tiger, etc.
these are just examples.
ranathari May 22, 2006, 01:49 PM Seriously, you guys, think about what's going to happen mid- to late- game. We'll have so many damn units on the map that it'll be impossible to give them custom names or to remember where the hell they are and what the hell they're doing. Let's just keep the default names and append them with a suitable suffix for ease of identification whilst reserving true custom names for special units.

Then use divisions, regiments, etc.
Emp. Killyouall May 22, 2006, 05:01 PM Warriors, Archers, Axeman, pikeman: Battalions
Horse Units: Regiments
Air Units: Names of members?
Sea Units: Cities, places
Arty Units: Division
Armored Units: Corps
Gunpowder Units (MechInf counts as armored): Division
All Other combat Units: Regiments
This is a rough draft of a possible naming scheme...
ranathari May 22, 2006, 05:25 PM I still can't see the point of your naming schemes: you guys are just being complex for the sake of it.
I am the Future May 22, 2006, 06:55 PM so waht if we are, it gives us something to do, and it will hopefully keep members semi active.
Also it gives the MDG some flavor.
That said I am all in favor of The regiments idea. Names like 1st Warrior Regiment, 2nd Warrior regiment; 1st Archer Regiment, 2nd Archer Regiment. I also am in favor of nameing air units after members, and naval units after cities/places. I am wondering though, what is the oppinion on nameing settler units? I was thinking taht Nameing them for the city they are built in. So a settler built in Short Line would be Short Line Settler. Just an idea though.
jeejeep May 22, 2006, 07:26 PM I agree with whoever (ranathari?) said that we should only name special units(maybe only ones with 4 or more promotions or something). Naming all or most of them will be too hard in the mid and late game. However, I think we should definitely give those special units special names. I will let others decide on what those names whould be.
koondrad May 23, 2006, 12:06 PM You see the way I do it goes like this:
Army
Divisions
Regiments
Battalions
Companies
Platoons
Usually the bottom two or three structures aren't needed unless you're building a huge invasion force.
IMO, organising our land forces in this way has a number of benefits:
The naming of units is logical.
It's easy to see what the unit actually is.
It is very adaptable to expansion.
It gives a professional touch and is aesthetically pleasing.
I'm quite happy to go about renaming units and making charts or diagrams for reference.
Emp. Killyouall May 23, 2006, 02:01 PM You forgot Corps (between Army and Division). If we have to we can go into squads and fireteams too. :D

whatta about secret agents
koondrad May 23, 2006, 03:54 PM If we have to we can go into squads and fireteams too. :D
You heard it here first; our army is going to be GIGANTIC. :scan:
I am the Future May 23, 2006, 04:03 PM Im all for koondrad's idea.
But a massive army,
Not my personal style.
koondrad May 23, 2006, 04:18 PM But a massive army,

No I wasn't serious lest we bankrupt ourselves.
King Flevance May 23, 2006, 05:18 PM I like koons idea as well. Anything that allows the units not to get confused. typeing Alpha and bravo right now keeps people from typing warrior to the west/east. Also not to mention people mistaking west with east. naming the units a generic way is helpful regardless in a situation like this. It prevents misunderstandings and such.
