Feel free to not stick to the sigs I mention! Feel free to discuss the topics in the sig.

What's with all the "I'm staunchly <religion>, be careful!" signatures? What value do people see in putting that in their sig?

Well, I just put my opinion in my sig, it saves me the typing time of putting it in my posts. ;)

I think the religios "I'm a catholic beware" sig things are silly. Some sigs are cool with neat links. I like reading the quotes in many. The worst are latin quotes of some obscure medevil pope.

I think the "Roman Catholic" ones are just a way for the relatively few Catholic posters here to have a sense of solidarity and fellowship. I think it's actually kind of interesting, but I expect it is aimed more at fellow Catholics than at other posters. The only sig I know which quotes medieval popes is Inqvisitor's, and I will just say that it is not his sig that is the issue. Mine mentions that I consider my religion interesting (the idea came from Lockesdonkey back in the days that I posted outside OT) and also quotes Jack Chick, the craziest fundamental Christian I have ever encountered.

What's the first line of your sig supposed to mean, Eran?

It's from a tract (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0046/0046_01.asp) by the aforementioned Chick, which explains the spiritual dangers of Dungeons and Dragons. You see, this young woman (Debbie) had gotten involved in D&D, which naturally led to her recruitment by a coven of witches, who taught her all sorts of black magic, even going so far as to address her by the name of her character, Elfstar. But when our intrepid Christian hero told her about Jesus, she freaked and wanted out, telling him that she wanted to go back to being Debbie.

Jack Chick is so ridiculous that I felt I had to honor (or dishonor) him in some way in my sig.

Average person in OT: "Bush is a war criminal, he killed just for OIL! He set up 9/11 as a means to justify invasion! Bush is a moron! Bush is a mastermind who can set up conspiracies! Michael Moore tells the whole truth and nothing but the truth! FOX News is run by the US government and is a means to spread NeoCon agenda, while CNN is very unbiased! USA is a fascist state, they are agressors against benevolent countries like Iraq and Iran! Dick Cheney shot a man on purpose! Posting biased articles and adding an edgy little phrase like 'I wonder how neocons are going to counter THIS!' is a very effective means of argument! I believe in free speech, so long you're a liberal. Conservatives want to secure the borders cause they are RACIST!"I can only conclude that garric is so far-right that one could arguably call him fascist when he has this hateful a view of the "average" poster.

I dont believe that the "I'm a Catholic beware" are silly. I have seen other Catholics with that signature and it gives me a sense of unity and as Eran of Arcadia stated, a sense of solidarity and fellowship because there are a few Catholic posters in this thread are in the minority.

I admit that I do feel left out and lonely being in a minority in the forums that has an atheist/agnostic majority. I felt out of place after I rediscovered God and decided to return back into the Catholic Church.

Jack Chick is so ridiculous that I felt I had to honor (or dishonor) him in some way in my sig.

Jack Chick is awesome. That's probably my favorite tract of his!

My general opinion on sigs... I'll quote myself:

They're like bumperstickers. No one but you cares that your kid is an honor student or that you're an atheist or a catholic crusader or that you're a whatever. Honestly, I think its an exercise in narcissim. In the US people have been socialized to think that everyone is important and special and that each of our individual feelings are so special and precious.

Guess what, there are 6 billion people on earth. Your sh*t ain't that hot.

So, why do I have one myself? Same reason my titles are always obscure... to amuse myself.

TBH, I think the forums would be improved if sigs were not on EVERY post by default.

Erik: in 25 words, can you explain how nihlism is contradictory?Nihilism states that nothing is true. Liar's paradox!

Well, it doesn't strictly state that, but rather claims the negation of all truth and knowledge as I understand it.

Edit: And when combined with quantum fluctuations, it really makes discussions valueless. "The sun might disappear tomorrow!" (Never mind that the chance is 10^-(10^20)).

The sigs that read "poster is <religion here>" don't bother me at all, but the part "respond at your own risk" seems a bit deffensive to me.

I've seen sigs that were almost as long, but not from someone so new to CFC (welcome, by the way). The actual beliefs you espouse seem to me personally to be a bit odd, but who am I to judge? And not to be completely pedantic, but it's "Gandhi".

I have done a fair amount of research, granted, some people share differences in how exactly ecovillages should run, and the size they should be. But yeah, I consider myself pretty familiar with the whole idea.

Unity is one thing. Some people (some religious people included) think Catholics are backwards people. I feel I must warn them that I in fact am one of them. What is the point in responding to a closed minded Catholic?

Is this still en vogue? I saw Erik with something like this before too. Years ago, there were email requests to over-load the monitoring software. Is this an actual concern for people? It's not really a concern, so I don't really put much effort into it. I switch it on and off at random intervals. (I've had it thrice since joining CFC.) It costs me about as much effort as waving my middle finger, and it's more effective.

It didnt shorten easily, and meant very little in an incredibly convoluted way.

Abaddon means so much more, and is so much cooler in my mind.

I must say that Slozenger was 3 times cooler than Abaddon. No joke!

Being ninjaed is when one writes something, and either takes a pause before posting it or takes a long time writing it, and then when one submits the post, someone else has written the same thing in a shorter time or more concisely.

I've got a new one:

Do not go gentle into that good night / Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

"It's war, and we're losing. All we can do is to fight the long defeat. As long as we draw breath, the fight goes on. We know we're fighting for a lost cause, but that's no reason to give up. Our enemy has no plans of retreat, but he can only advance where we draw back. Stand!"

I put it on after a rather melancholy and pessimistic discussion I had on IRC the other day. (Attached below.) Feel free to comment.

(22:45:47) Lina: Lives are for loosers.<3 knowledge.
(22:47:12) ErikMesoy: I say that too, when I feel jocular. But some days I feel like a cursed sage out of a mythology, who reads people's lives like a scroll.
(22:47:48) ErikMesoy: It's not a feeling I'd wish upon anyone else.

(22:53:15) ErikMesoy: Parents are the only ones who can really instill love of knowledge. If they don't, it falls to the teachers, but they're required to teach the children coursework first.
(22:53:30) Lina: Teachers make everything dumb.
(22:53:40) ErikMesoy: Not necessarily. There are a few brilliant teachers.
(22:53:44) Lina: Few.
(22:53:46) ErikMesoy: But the system discourages that.
(22:54:32) ErikMesoy: If teachers try to enlighten the students, parents will often complain about how the teacher is brainwashing their children and deviating from the curriculum.
(22:55:06) Blank: bad monkey teacher, no teachy our child evolution!
(22:55:14) ErikMesoy: Well, that. And lawsuits.
(22:55:34) ErikMesoy: "Why are you making our child question our parenting?" is a favorite.

(22:58:05) ErikMesoy: Sometimes I want to wreak visceral extermination.
(22:58:18) Lina: I know how you feel, Erik.
(22:58:21) ErikMesoy: But I'm bound by my own morality, fighting a system that doesn't play by rules.
(22:58:47) Lina: At times I want to just pick up a gun and go into a gorey genocide of dumbarsery.
(22:58:47) ErikMesoy: Did you read the Lord of the Rings, where Gimli and Legolas speak of the coming of the Age of Men [and their own dwindling to nothing]?
(22:59:44) ErikMesoy: I feel like that. It's like I'm fighting a long defeat, and all I can do is to spend my life in that fight. Until the Shadow falls, I must preserve what I can.
(23:00:10) Lina: Meh.
(23:00:18) ErikMesoy: It's a world where the more conscious and intelligent people have fewer kids because they are the ones who realize that the planet can't support them...

(23:04:40) ErikMesoy: Do I sound emo?
(23:05:06) Outpost: I can be emo-er
(23:05:16) ErikMesoy: Whenever I feel emo, pessimism kicks in and says it's cynicism mixed with realism.
(23:05:49) EvilDarkLordi: Nah. You sound well-informed.

Ignorance, jadedness, prejudice and active evil are marching forwards, and if I try to fight back with heavy weaponry, I'm playing into their hands. So all I can do is to hold them off for as long as possible.

Don't take it too seriously, though. It popped up late in the evening after a stressful day, and right now it feels more like a reminder to be on my guard than a doom.

My sig just points to the fact that we write the story of our lives, calling ourselves "humans", not really knowing what it means and nobody will ever experience the same what we each invidually do.

If you have lost a friend with who you have shared some special moments you know that there's nobody else to remember those moments when the other one is gone but you.

So our lives are just myths.
Some myths are remembered for longer time than others but after all everything vanishes just like dust is blowed away by the wind.

The "Warning: Poster is a [religious identifier]" things I find ridiculous. You're a Catholic/Mormon/Pastafarian/Whatever - so what? (*See first three sentences) ;)

Get it now?

I'm actually not happy about people using it or variants w/o actually understanding it. There is nothing I can do about that, though.
So it's a catholic thing. What i don't understand is why don't the other religious ppl do this... :hmm:

"Conservative: Someone opposed to progress. Liberal: Someone supporting freedom, from libre. Ha ha ha."
It's a direct parody at the sig "There's no such thing as right and left anymore. There's only right and wrong."

@E_M: Not really, since the other forum I live on doesn't have a length limit. Just a common courtesy not to use more than a screen height. So I can delete stuff as it gets old, rather than as I think of new stuff.

I've always thought it might be an idea to write something totally outrageous as a sig and not conform to it in the slightest, sort of a totally throw people off guard stance, but it's too late now. For example: warning poster is strict worshiper of the sect of the dark Gods of Nijhal and will brook no opposition from false proselytising religous nuts, Catholic protestant or otherwise, kindly keep your religion to yourself, or we start doing wierd rituals to divine your location. You have been warned....;) :D

Matt, how do you switch between drums and harmonica, that must be a little tricky..?

I'll have a listen once I set up some sound to this computer :)

It is a little tricky, and as such, I'm not the regular harmonica player for my band (on our recording, I actually only play drums). I have a harness, similar to the one that Dylan (or anybody who plays harmonica and guitar) uses, and move a mic under my head. Its pretty tricky, because you have all 4 limbs doing something different, AND your mouth. I'm getting better at it.

For a few of the slower songs, I actually leave the drumset and come to the front of the stage, and we go to two harmonicas. Its somewhat of a novelty, but you can do some cool things with it (distort one harp, run the other through a different system, do harmonies, etc). The crowds love it.

I hope you like the music. I admit, the recording quality is not so good...mostly because of our current shoestring budget (we had to use a crappy electronic drumset, since we dont have acsess to drum mics...and the drums sometimes fade in and out)...but I hope our musicanship still shows. It might seem like a copout, but we're better live, until we raise enough money/meet people to make a better recordings, its all we got

In some places yes, where it's not an option clinics take the demand.
I think 89% of hospitals don't do abortions and 70-80% of med school students don't learn the process of doing an abortion. That's why ARA feels this clinic is worth fighting for. The army of god is right by saying that if they shut down this abortion clinic they will extremely, perhaps entirely erase abortions in mississippi.

I think it was a most dispicable thing to say. That apparently when bad things happen, they should only happen to soldiers since they are responsible for everything bad that ever happens. As if soldiers are not people too, with families and wives and kids as well. Total crap.

The message I am sending with it, is that even people opposed to war will dehumanize their opponents in order to morally justify the things they say. In doing so, it makes them no better than the people they would oppose.
