View Full Version : New Unit: Yamato Class Battleship
TVA22 Feb 26, 2002, 04:48 PM My second unit, The Yamato Class Battleship. (should be a special unit to Japan). In real life, these were the biggest, baddest battleships ever made, and more powerful than any of their contemporaries. Sure, an Iowa class with ship to ship missiles could take one out easily, but during WW2, no ship could engage one of the two Yamato classes and expect victory. They sported 9 18 inch guns, and armour as thick as 16 inches in some places.
You'll need to create a new unit called "Yamato Class"
As when I posted my "Chinese Junk" unit a few days ago, I have no idea how to put a screenshot or a preview of the animation up. Sorry. The zip includes a run, attack, and default animation. I'll post the death one right after this. You'll notice that the unit looks very scary when up against a regular battleship, as it appears significantly larger in-game than the regular battleship unit. Enjoy all!
NEW VERSION: To the untrained eye, it may look the same, but I've worked hard to make it less jumpy, and the transitions from one flc to the next ie default to run or attack is much smoother as well. As this was the second unit I made, I've learned some tricks to make it look better since then, and I've just cleaned up the animation for anyone who's interested.. Now it's on par with my battlewagon and bismark.
TVA22 Feb 26, 2002, 04:51 PM Death animation.
Plastic Bag Feb 26, 2002, 05:51 PM In order to make an animation, go here (http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp?)
Download animation shop.
Once the download is complete, open the flc that you want with animation shop, save it as an animated gif file and attach it to a post. Simple, if you have the right tools.
By the way, great unit. It makes a great battleship upgrade.
vingrjoe Feb 26, 2002, 06:33 PM TVA22, nice mod. But don't be so sure of the Yamato's "supremacy". Check out the thread "Stupid Naval Warfare" toward the end, and check out the specs and facts I posted. THe Iowa's had smaller main guns, 16"/50 cal, but the 16" projectiles had a higher velocity rate than the 18" shells, this resulted in deeper armor penetration. Test were done after WW2 using some confiscated 26" Japanese armor plating, identical to the face plate of a Yamato 18" turret. A 16"/50cal AP shell was fired at the 26" faceplate, upon contact, the 16" round shattered the armor on the faceplate. Only thing the Yamato had going for it was it's size, then again, it's size made it slower and less maneuverable. The Yamato was built using very poor armor, and along the lines of Japanse tradition, the crews weren't taught damage control like their American counterparts, they were taught to fight until death.
The Iowa's had superior armor quality, better damage control, higher speed and maneuverbility, high velocity guns and superior fire control radar. No doubt the Yamato would give them a good fight, but guarranteeing a Yamato victory, is presumptious, given the facts. Check out link below. Look under Mk8 Armor Piercing Projectile.

sgrig Feb 26, 2002, 06:45 PM Wow! This ship surely looks menacing!!
TVA22 Feb 26, 2002, 08:47 PM I dunno, you may be right, but I've read otherwise. I've been a fan of battleships my whole life, and most books I've read have said that the Iowas at the time of their launching were lucky not to have run into a yamato. But who knows, the yamatos never had the chance. Thats why I made one for civ3! :)
Hawkman Feb 26, 2002, 09:18 PM
I have added the files to the game as one file. added unit in the game
when I select the unit in the game, the game cashes! help!
dannyevilcat Feb 27, 2002, 12:38 AM Good lord, it's a behemoth! Looks rad. About the greatness of the Yamato, say what you'd like-- it took alot to sink her.
YoungEagle Feb 27, 2002, 09:51 AM Unit looks great!
Any idea what the stats should be?
davros42 Feb 27, 2002, 06:41 PM Now can we get a Space Battleship Yamato?
Activate the wave motion cannon!

It's because the game's having a problem accessing the graphics files. Doublecheck everything in the floder and in the .ini file to make sure there are no errors.
And what do you mean by added the files as one file? There should be several in the folder. Look at the Battleship for a comparison.
Razorwing Mar 01, 2002, 08:19 AM Great unit TVA22, but I humbly suggest you add some limited animation to the default animation. Maybe the ship could rock gently left and right, a wave builds up, or a seagull flies by. Absolute motionlessness is disturbing because in the game, no unit is ever completely still (or so I recall, I may be wrong).
Hawkman: I think the folder name, the name of the .ini file, and the name in the Civ3 Editor must match exactly for a unit to work. In this case the ini file is named 'Yamato Class' which is an odd name for a unit. I'm going to call it Yamato Battleship.
Madeira Mar 01, 2002, 04:18 PM LOL davros
davros42 Mar 01, 2002, 06:30 PM Thanks Madiera, I thought no one had noticed that...
TVA22 Mar 02, 2002, 09:43 AM :( There is some animation in the default, but it's very subtle-- some water laps up against the side of the ship. It looked fine to me, but then again, I was looking for it. Just look at the water line.
Madeira Mar 02, 2002, 12:44 PM I guess not many people here saw that animated series when they were kids :)
Loved it, would love to see again.
The Art of War Mar 03, 2002, 01:08 PM Could someone tell me how to put this unit into my game---in layman's terms?
Captain H Mar 04, 2002, 04:32 AM Goto the adding new units thread which is within the 1st 5 pages of Creation and customization.

[Totaly offtopic]
It was originaly called Starblazers :)
Got it on video, check a good anime/manga store, they still sell it :)
Razorwing Mar 04, 2002, 10:49 AM I'd like to say thanks by uploading the civilopedia icons I made for the unit.
Madeira Mar 04, 2002, 01:02 PM Starblazers, thats it, wish i could find it on the net, divx or something :)
The Art of War Mar 04, 2002, 02:25 PM Hey, I can't find the "Add new unit" button on my editor. Where do I go to find this? BTW, where are all of the .wav files for the Yamato?
TVA22 Mar 04, 2002, 03:17 PM Wow, Thanks!! Hahaha.. I never did get around to doing that for this unit or my Chinese Junk, I just get started on a new project right away as soon as I finish one. Right now I'm working on a WW1 battlewagon. What can I say, battleships are pretty cool! :)
As for the .wav files.. I must be stupid or something, because I can't get my .ini files to read soundeffect files from other folders, as with DarkSheer's units. So on my comp, I just cut and paste the sounds from the battleship folder, then modify my Yamato Class.ini file accordingly. It works fine, just requires a minute to set up. If anyone knows how to make the .ini files work right, that'd be great, its just that on my system, it won't read the .wav files from anywhere else. Don't know why.
Grey Fox Mar 13, 2002, 10:46 AM Can I use this unit in my WW2 MOD?
Find it here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18078
TVA22 Mar 13, 2002, 08:45 PM Go ahead and use it. Also, I have a WW1 battleship on this forum somewhere too, which you are free to use, and I'm about to post the Bismark. Most of the units I'll be making are from ww2, and many will be for the pacific war, as that's what interests me personally. This weekend I'm going to re-do parts of this unit. It's going to look the same, just be less jumpy. This was only the second one I'd made, so I've learned a few tricks to help me clean it up some. I'll post the new version, if you'd rather wait. Hope when we can actually get scenarios, someone will consider making a good ww2 one, like we had with civ2. I was a big fan of those, and can't wait to see my name on some credits!!:D
The Art of War Mar 14, 2002, 04:29 PM Yeah, I'm a WW2 Pac fanatic too. You should make a Yorktown-class carrier! That would be AWSOME!!!!
TVA22 Mar 14, 2002, 04:39 PM I intend to, but not just right away... I'm getting a bit sick of naval units, as you might imagine!
The Art of War Mar 14, 2002, 07:12 PM one thing that would help is if you (all you unit makers, you great people :)) would add a ReadMe that details how to put this unit into the game. it would help us newbies a whole bunch. I still can't figure out that stuff. . .:(

No, it was originally called 'Space Battleship Yamato' and when it was dubbed for the US, they renamed in Star Blazers. They renamed the ship into the Argo for it too.

...
I want the wave motion cannon too. ;)
Defectiv Mar 18, 2002, 03:39 AM Okay, you win :)
But they sell it in europe as starblazers too ;)
My mistake
The Art of War Mar 23, 2002, 07:52 PM What picture do I use for the Civilopedia? Where can I find this picture, also?
TVA22 Mar 23, 2002, 10:05 PM Razorwing posted some pedia pics on page1 of this thread

The carriers you are talking about were made in greater numbers than any other carrier and were the main strength of the U.S. fleet: but they were Essex-class carriers. The first was Essex, CV-9 , and Yorktown was CV-10.
The Art of War Mar 25, 2002, 06:07 AM Actually, before the 25 Essex-class, there were three (3) Yorktown ships, the Yorktown, Enterprise, and the Hornet. FOr more info, check out navy.mil.
joebasstard Mar 25, 2002, 10:13 AM I thought you meant yorktown II, as those first 3 carriers were not the bulk of the U.S. carrier force. Those first ones were orginally designed as battle-cruisers in the 30's; they coverted the design to carriers after the hulls were laid. Of course those first were very historically significant because of Midway: its just that the Essex class were bigger and better.
The Art of War Mar 25, 2002, 03:27 PM I know the Essex were "bigger and better", but many of the great events of the early part of the war happened off the three Yorks. Hornet launched the Doolittle Raid, Enterprise survived and fought in every major battle of the war. . .
joebasstard Mar 25, 2002, 03:49 PM I take back the part about the Yorktown class starting as battle cruisers... that was Lexington and Saratoga.
In any case, if someone made a Pacific war mod they could easily use one class or the other, as they weren't greatly different in a macroscopic sense. More importantly, somene should definitely make a Japanese-style carrier, something like Hiryu or similar Shokaku class.
If we continue this any further it should be in a new thread.
The Art of War Mar 25, 2002, 06:05 PM true, I'll make a thread in General Discussion.
Also, for someone who knows, I downloaded the civilopedia icons, but where do I put them to get them to show up on the little icon selection picture in the editor? Thanks to those who can help me:D .
Kentonio Mar 25, 2002, 06:28 PM Our WW2 mod is going to cover the pacific war as part of its scope.

Eliminator May 02, 2002, 12:03 PM Help!! I just downloaded your custom units, but how do u add it into the game!!!??????? PLZ help me out!!
Eliminator May 04, 2002, 05:07 AM oke got it.........now I'm only missing the unit_32
So.....any 1 who has it......?
akinkhoo Oct 29, 2003, 11:55 AM yes, the yamaro were heavy, but they ain't slow... their unique hull design allows them to make very tight turn as well. there is damage control too. it isn't as good as iowa, but it was superior to most battleship of that era. in term of armor, both yamato class survive 40+ hit in their career before sinking, their formidable foe till their end.
the yamato's gun are POWERFUL, so powerful that if the lifeboat were kept on deck, they would be blow off! which is why they are store under the deck instead. however, it is true that the yamato's gun were less effective (the velocity is actually higher on yamato than iowa, the problem is it travel so faster than unless it was a direct hit, the shell would skip off making it less effective)
overall, the iowa was a functional design. it was also able to tranverse the panama canal. something the yamato couldn't.
kudos to yamato :goodjob:
kudos to iowa :goodjob:
lame death to prince of wales! :p
Healz Nov 19, 2003, 06:06 PM This is off-topic but could the Art Of War if he is still here post a larger version of his Avatar? I am convinced that it looks like a picture of the Battle of Bunker Hill in Static, although I could be wrong.
W.i.n.t.e.r Nov 20, 2003, 03:28 AM Ehem, could this raise-the-Yamato thingy please be stopped- this is one of the oldest threads in the creators forum that can be found- please use private messaging (pM) to make off-topic requests- some moderators might start throwing knives at a given point in time :D
Now: on-topic, is there any chance that this unit will be redone one day (cleaned up, civ colours, enhanced) I mean, it was pretty when it came out (still has a place in my mod 2 B) but it looks kinda shabby next to the in-game units such as the South Dakota Class "Battleship" or the latest Conquest units....
TVA22 Nov 22, 2003, 05:50 PM I sure would like it if someone would make all kinds of really high quality American and Japanese ships since we have a pacific scenario now. I still don't like having the Japanese running around with an Iowa Class that's named BB Kongo.
spincrus Nov 22, 2003, 06:04 PM Let's make this thread a sticky, since it constantly gets bumped up :)
Anyway;
I, too, would be happy to see higher quality graphics for the Yamato class (and maybe also a Bismarck class) battleship.
This unit itself was a "WOW" back in the old days. So I still appreciate the effort, but it's sort of "obsolete" compared to the other ones :)
TVA22 Nov 22, 2003, 06:45 PM Hell, we could even use a better Iowa Class... Maybe just some different battleships with wooden decks, the original one is so ugly.
vingrjoe Nov 26, 2003, 02:54 PM Here's the better Iowa Class Battleship. I paid the folks over at Digimation good money for this baby. I just have to learn how to animate in 3DStudio Max or in Rhino.
vingrjoe Nov 26, 2003, 02:59 PM Sorry about that...had to resize it.
Wyrm , give me a week or two, if I lose patience, then I'll send you the file.
W.i.n.t.e.r Nov 27, 2003, 03:36 AM  Sweeeet,
Wyrmshadow, Buddy- will you make the Yamato size-wise compatible to your latest ships (so they somewhat match in size with the In-game units ?)
W.i.n.t.e.r Dec 01, 2003, 07:02 AM Ooops, sorry- seems I wasn't really quite awake that one day...
unscratchedfoot Dec 11, 2003, 12:03 AM wow, those ships look really cool, vingre and wyrmshadow. I do hope you publish them.
ImperialHR Apr 15, 2004, 12:10 AM TVA22 - would it be possible to modify this to add Civ color?
I really like the ship (the biggest and the baddest ship ever built) and really would like to include it in my mod.. however, i hesitate to do it because of Civ color thingy.... :s
TVA22 Apr 15, 2004, 09:55 AM I won't be updating it, or any of my units I made... years ago now... I need a new game.
I actually am really hoping vingrjoe or wyrmshadow will be able to make a yamato class. other custom made ships just can't hold a candle to those guy's ships, in my humble opinion.

yup...
Halidon55 Apr 15, 2004, 11:00 AM You can never have to many warships. Do you know what file I need to change, so that I can see the splash when I miss and explosions when I hit?
Wyrmshadow May 11, 2004, 04:33 PM anyone still interested in a Yamato, I need help.
