View Full Version : Latin American Catholic Wonder
Heretic_Cata Jun 08, 2006, 02:16 PM It's for my mod again. :D
Ok, so i'm looking for an important building that could simbolise the conversion to catholicism of the New World. I am looking for something relatively old ... but it's ok if it's not very old.
Since my knowledge in the history of the Americas post Cortez & Pizaro is practicaly 0, i though i should ask you guys for help. :)
It doesn't have to be some really huge cathedral ... it could be a monument also or smthing else ...
May i please have some candidates for this thing ?
Evil Tyrant Jun 08, 2006, 02:45 PM Possibly the Jesuit run indian villages of south America, reductions I think they were called. Here is a link about them (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductions)
Plotinus Jun 08, 2006, 04:08 PM The Jesuit-run reductions of Paraguay were probably the closest thing to a perfect society ever achieved. They were, in effect, a communist society, with all property owned communally and all work done for the benefit of all; they were also the first society in history to achieve 100% literacy. They also had much better living conditions, working hours, and cultural activities than most Europeans of the time (or, perhaps, of any time!).
However, if you're going for something big and impressive, surely the obvious candidate is the statue of Christ the Redeemer at Rio de Janeiro.
YNCS Jun 08, 2006, 04:34 PM The cathedral in Lima, Peru is rather impressive:

Heretic_Cata Jun 09, 2006, 06:00 AM :hmm: If i won't find anything else, i guess i'll add the statue.
There's a lot of time though, i'll wait and see what other stuff will show up here. :)
I could add the jesuit reductions as improvements, but the jesuites have another purpose in my mod. :D
Thorgalaeg Jun 09, 2006, 06:27 AM Mexico Cirty Cathedral is the biggest one in America IIRC. It is relatively old (started in 1563) however it took some centuries to be totally finished, (until 1813). If you want to go older the oldest Cathedral or Church in America are surely the ones in Santo Domingo (around 1500), being the oldest city on the continent.

I would agree with perhaps using the Mexico City Cathedral. The Cristo Redentor Statue is too recent and doesn't convey the bloodshed and darker side of the 1500s. I could see using the Cathedral in Mexico city though.
Heretic_Cata Jun 09, 2006, 12:16 PM If i use the statue of Christ, it won't be exactly historicaly accurate ... I could cope with that, since my mod is pseudo-accurate. But it would be sorta -->:hmm:
If i use a cathedral ... it won't be as cool as the statue, and i have several others cathedrals/churches in my mod already. But it would be historicaly accurate.
Oh well, i'll decide when i'll get to work on it ...
' any other stuff i could choose from ?
sydhe Jun 09, 2006, 05:36 PM Christ of the Andes would be another one. It's a symbol of lasting peace between Argentina and Chile.
pboily Jun 09, 2006, 11:40 PM wow... this reduction business is fascinating. I'd never heard of them...
Plotinus Jun 10, 2006, 05:34 PM If you're interested in the reductions, you should read They built Utopia: the Jesuit missions in Paraguay, 1610-1768 by Frederick Reiter (Potomac, MD: Scripta Humanistica 1995). It's a detailed account of the whole amazing story, and as far as I know the only book on the subject.
