Just want to start off by saying thanks to everyone who works on this Mod, its an excellent piece of work, and a heck of a lot of fun. That aside, I'd like to know who (if anyone) is interested in playing FfH2 multiplayer; by email or Pitboss server. PM or post here if your interested. If you are willing to run a pitboss server that would be great. I have a decent PC which I believe could run a server, but I have never done it, and I'm not sure it could handle being up 24/7... Anyway, let me know if your interested!

Just keep in mind that you need to avoid targeted spells in multiplayer when you play - they cause Out of Synch errors.

Silverkiss
Jun 16, 2006, 01:28 PM
Well I would like to play, but I never ran a Pitboss server and I doubt my PC can do it.

Already said I do in the PBEM forum :) perhaps you should put a link to the other forum and sort it all out there?

You people are incredible... http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=174177 Thats my other thread for a ffh Multiplayer. Gonna switch most of my posting to there... and about to pose a question there, so everyone go and check it out and reply.

Not much time left to join the above game, it'll be using version .13b I believe

I played a FfH 0.13 game recently with a friend and we got an out-of-sync error even though we both didn't cast a targeted spell. I don't remember the exact details, but I think we did see a targeted spell. This leads me to believe that an AI may have casted a targeted spell. If that's the case, than multiplayer FfH is now out of the question, until either the out-of-sync bug is fixed or the mage AI is somehow disabled.

The out of sync with targeted spells happens only for the Player (its correlated to the screen that comes up and information from that screen beeing only present on one of the pcs as far as i know.)

AIs targeted spells would not make trouble. (but they do not cast targeted spells atm)

I think we're only playing with human players anyway

I've pmed Project re: it. Would be cool multiplayer I think!

eerr
Jun 30, 2006, 11:05 AM
I would play multiplayer, but the computer that gets email is diffrent from the one that plays civ 4 : (
it would have to be a pitboss server thing, which i haven't even started to mess with...
(although if i host it, i'm sure my computer could handle it)

Bad Player
Jun 30, 2006, 05:47 PM
I just joined the Pitboss FFH2 game and I clicked to move my scout and warrior and also pressed the build city button for my settler. However none of them moved and the settler didn't build yet. Some other civs have a score of 35 which I assume means they built their city.

Is this meant to happen? Shouldn't I build and move in turn 0?

Silverkiss
Jun 30, 2006, 06:48 PM
Its because its not your turn yet. Some player before you didn´t played his turn yet, when he plays you will be able to play yours.

Bad Player

I´m using version 2013d

eerr
Jul 01, 2006, 11:12 AM

i think i may have gotten to the leaders in classic mode by accident the first time...

Had problems joining the game- some error saying the save was protected in case of changes to the mods folder. Are we still using .13d?

Silverkiss
Jul 01, 2006, 02:18 PM
Ya i have this problem too... something in the assets folder

Bad Player
Jul 01, 2006, 10:54 PM
I didn't get this problem, however I remember reading something about calling the assets folder assets.old and creating a new blank assets folder. Don't try this without confirmation plz as it may be related to something entirely different!!!

Can someone tell us how to make sure Pitboss runs as simultaneous moves please???

I am now getting an error which says

When I connect via direct-ip to the FFH2 Pitboss game I get a message saying (trying to remember word for word) "Warning: Our files do not match host's" (or very similar wording).

It then lets me in to choose my civ and give myself a password but I can't go any further (ie can't enter game).

I'm not sure if I'm the only one getting this. Is there a way to check if I/we have the d patch installed or whatever file issues need addressing?

Bad Player
Jul 07, 2006, 05:24 PM
Ok so this morning I start up my computer and try to get into FFH2 pitboss game. I don't get the file mismatch error!!! :D

But now after I enter my password for the Lanun and try to get into the game it says:
The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed.

This is the same error as before btw and the game exits after pressing OK.

Silverkiss
Jul 07, 2006, 06:02 PM
This multiplayer is screwed, maybe is some player that entered... remenber the first times we could play normally

Bad Player
Jul 07, 2006, 06:23 PM
Yeah I could play the very first game... Maybe we should run a test server with just 2 or 3 of us original players - see if it works OK then.

In the original game we didn't have simultaneous moves though which slows the game a lot.

Silverkiss
Jul 07, 2006, 07:24 PM
Maybe try to create a game whidout simultaneus moves, just to test if its that whats causing this trouble. If it is, we will have to play whidout it =/

Bad Player
Jul 07, 2006, 07:28 PM
We should only test 1 thing at a time. Simultaneous moves makes it go so much faster though :( .

Jul 07, 2006, 07:38 PM
What we are alredy testing ?? o_0

Hey guys, I noticed something that may bar mentioning but the time and day issue........these mods get players from both sides of the international date line.......so when timing things remember to be on the same day......or realize wednesday and thursday may be the same day...

..I'm US central and am not involved at this time my games are still dry-dock offline but I play Hotseat about 1/4 of the time........However I talk to people in places like Romania and Israel at times and geeks from all over pretty regular.

:) ........Just thought I should mention it for timing sake........even if you guys are already on this line of thinking a new member may need this post or they may slip and not think of it.

Hopefully not permanent!!!

Set up a game where you start Friday at night for Bad Player and Saturday morning for everyone else lol.

If someone leaves a game in progress does the AI take over for them? It could be fun to play a game where AI's take over some times (and then you come back and bam! AI has screwed you over badly and left you with a single Warrior).

Silverkiss
Jul 26, 2006, 09:24 AM

Jul 27, 2006, 04:02 AM
I don't mind getting up early on Saturday to play FFH2 multiplayer - it's worth it!!!

There's basically a 12 hour time difference for us so what time of the evening do you guys want to start?

Also I suggest that we meet in this forum so we can see eachother and then start FFH2 up (any other suggestions on how to meet up? Give a GMT we should all be here?).

Jul 27, 2006, 09:24 AM

Lord Vermillion

Lord Vermillion
Jul 27, 2006, 02:01 PM
I should be ready to play (getting settled in from work and what not) around 8:30 USA EST. I may be able to recruit a buddy of mine to play with us also. Did u guys want to co-op (vs. the AI) or FFA, or just do what ever? thoughts?? If we co-op, we dont necessarily have to do it in "team" format, but can still work together. Im up for anything.

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 02:24 PM
My opinion is start FFA, but if 2 or more want to team up as the game progress, no problem. We should leave "Permanent Alliances" on, it will be more fun =P

Bad Player
Jul 27, 2006, 03:18 PM
Yeah I'd like to be able to compete against human players, not so sure about permanent alliances though..

What skill setting are we going to use and who is going to host the server? Could an American host the server please because my ping for European servers is awful?

Lord Vermillion
Jul 27, 2006, 03:53 PM
So FFA then. Sounds good to me. Looks like 3 of us so far. I will see if I can get a friend of mine to join also, but so far I havnet been able to contact him. Im thinking if whoever hosts it just puts FFH2 as the game title in the lobby we should be able to find it quite easily. Hopefully we can get a few more people on board. Also...noone has dial up do they?? If so that could become an issue.

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 04:00 PM
I could be up for the game, though not sure i could stay up til 4AM EST O_o

Lord Vermillion
Jul 27, 2006, 04:22 PM
Well, whomever hosts the game can keep the save, and we could continue the next weekend if everyone agrees.

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 05:00 PM
I never host, and I think I actually can´t host... But, if no one elses wants to, I can try. Oh, about civs, will it be random or we choose them ? And what will be the map settings ?

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 05:19 PM
peronsally i tend towards:
deity
raging barbs
standard map size
Classical for tech (gets the game going quicker)
Quick
highlands (or other maps with large amounts of land)
and never random civs (getting stuck with undevelopped ones like the Sidar wouldn't be fun)

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 05:25 PM
heh, we´re on different levels here. If we play Deity Raging Barbs, I´l be out of the game by year 50. xP

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 05:35 PM
lol

the trick is to start at classical, build every city on a hill, and pump out archers until they become so experienced they don't get hurt at all by barbs, then start making settlers grouped with them and take over key defensive positions to block barbs access to your original cities.
but i usually roam around with my settler until i find a highly defensible position.

But since its FFA, deity basically just handicaps all players so it evens out, so the difficulty doesn't really matter.

Raging barbs deity.. im used to it so it doesnt seem so bad to me, and i usually want it for challenge (not saying im good at the game or anything, just that i like fighting tooth and nail to make it interesting). But i'm sure human players won't be so easy to predict or appease.

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 05:37 PM
I think its better to put a lower difficulty setting, exactly because there will be human players to worry, and I prefer a million times be destroyed by another human than by the AI xP

Edit: Im playing a game Deity Raging Barbs now to test it out =D

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 06:06 PM
ya, when theres AI's i need either constant war or raging barbs to really make it interesting, with all humans difficulty is just deciding the rate at which we can expand.

deity raging barbs can be tough but classical and hill cities with archers gets me through it every time. if barbs had bombard on one of the units they send against then i'd be worried, but as it stands, they've got no impressive seige engines.

in the mid game (around the year 200 or so on Quick) you'll prolly want to get longbowmen (my high xp archers were still going strong, but i had Raider so they had tons of xp)

not sure if it would work for dwarves or elves though, since the reason its so good is that normal archers have +50% city def and +25% hill def (elf archers don't get either, and dwarves don't have archers).
that leads to +75% from basic archers abilities, and +25% from the hill, so an archer with 0xp is counting as 6 strength with 1 first strike. you start adding promotions on that, and cultural defense modifier, and then walls, and they become unstoppable as far as barbs are considered.

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 06:14 PM
lol =D

What civ/map you recommend to play on these settings ? (Deity/Raging Barbs)

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 06:19 PM
i used to play:
Hghlands (lots of hills so many good city positions, and lots of good choke points so you can section off land where you can improve it and barbs cant get to it)
-with Seas
-with Dense Mountain Chains
Quick
Classical Tech
Standard number of AI's as the map gives automatically
Require Complete Kills (sometimes things go badly and its fun to see how long you can last lol)

I also play "No tech trading" so i can be insular without being out-teched at insane rates (the AI's will trade like mad if given the chance).

i don't play Highlands anymore since i found the Smartmap map script. You can get some nice maps with that script that have a large protion of land, with neat things like map sides connected AND top and bottom of map connected(donut!).

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 06:22 PM
Heh, when I use smartmap i get some crazyness like FloodPlains/Grassland (5 food uninproveed o_0) and somethings I get all plains whidout any food/happiness resource, even whidout setting these things...

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 06:26 PM
ya i love the new variety :D
like hills/plains/foodplains

i like the.. cant remember the name of it, but it makes it so the center of the map is the coldest place :P

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 06:28 PM
hehe one day I started a game as Lanun and I was bored, so I started smartmap whit some options like "very high lvls of resources, all grass," etc. and I got an island whit 3 cityes, in the island (and in the water) there were like 30 resources lol

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 06:30 PM
ya thats great, high resource amounts makes it interesting, though it usually destroys any trading (since they likely have everything and so do you lol)

Silverkiss
Jul 27, 2006, 06:32 PM
Ya lol, but it makes some great city sites, my 3 cities were growing at 2-3 turns, even at huge pop like 15... lol

Sureshot
Jul 27, 2006, 06:34 PM
i find it really useful for making maps that are good for all ranges of players. Like Lanun can find great city sites (do a fragmented coastline and you'll get many peninsulas and little islands all over the place) while maintaining a huge center island with the map having large amounts of land space, so other civs are at their best as well.

Bad Player
Jul 28, 2006, 05:15 AM

Look at my forum name - raging barbs on deity!?!?

I'd put my vote in for normal or epic game length.

@Lord Vermillion:
I have ADSL1 but I'm in Australia so it's not much better than you playing dialup in your country with my overseas ping - hence my desire for an American server. My ping is about 450 in Europe!!!

Where can I get this smartmap script plz? Are we using it for our game?

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 08:38 AM
dunno about smartmap for multiplayer, it has longer loading times and multiplayer makes for long loading times by itself.

heres the thread for smartmap:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=154989

im a fan of quicker for multiplayer since multiplayer usually goes slower and its nice to not be pressing "end turn" doing nothing each turn :P
so of epic and normal i choose normal

difficulty can go right down as far as im concerned, since higher difficulty would just handicap us all and when humans are concerned i just play for fun not to win :D

Silverkiss
Jul 28, 2006, 09:00 AM
I would vote for normal or quick, any of the two is okay to me. What will be the map settings ? (we aren´t going to use smartmap, right ?)

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 09:13 AM
i vote against smartmap, it tends to take longer and multiplayer slows startup down enough already (and getting off to a bad start isn't good).

im in favour of:
standard size
highlands map
seas
dense peaks
ridgelines

though does everyone know what civ they want to be? that could help determine map type, since no one wants a purely land based game if they're gonna be lanun (highlands with seas is alright though, if lanun can get on one of the seas), and conversely, we don't want many little islands if one person alone is gonna be lanun, and a tropical world is bad if someone is Doviello. Lots of civ based considerations.

I think i might try Keelyn, ive been meaning to try the balseraphs.

Silverkiss

When I try to play Highlands on standart, my PC lags alot (sorry... my PC is a *cough* litlle outdated *cough*)

I´l go as Ethne the White of the Elohim or Flauros of the Calabim, any of the 2 is good to me.

Jul 28, 2006, 09:32 AM
I'd like to be Alexis of the Calabim please.

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 09:39 AM
maybe standard terra? that would give us the fun mid game of colonizing the new world.
or medium sized highlands? standard map is standardly 6 players anyways, and i think theres 4 of us?

another option that would be nice, Require Complete Kills (when i lose all my cities i like to atleast play until i lose all my units :P )

Silverkiss
Jul 28, 2006, 09:41 AM
xP Standart are 7 players...

We could play Terra Map, these are always fun... I guess im going as Lanun them xP

Lord Vermillion
Jul 28, 2006, 10:04 AM
Im excited to do this! I am open to pretty much anything, but I personally like highlands myself. Unfortunately with highlands on MP, someone usually gets stuck with really bad land. As far as civ picks go, I am open. I like Malkim, Elohim, Amurites, Hippus, Balseraphs, and Calabim. so any of those are good for me:) I figured I would just see who was left out of those after all of you are done, then make my pick. Back to the map, I would like to do highlands, I just dont want to see someone get screwed on land, thats not to fun. I guess we can experiment with it. I guess I can try to host, I have been able to in the past. Remember I wont be ready until about 8:30 USA EST, so if I host, the game wont be up until then. I was thinking around 8:30 I will post the game name (FFH2) and password on here. Thoughts??

btw... Terra can be fun also.:)

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 10:12 AM
sounds good, highlands medium or terra standard both work for me.

So far it seems like:
Sureshot - Keelyn of Balseraphs
Bad Player - Alexis of Calabim
JuliusBloodmoon - Ethne the White of Elohim or Lanun
Lord Vermillion - Malakim, Amurites or Hippus

Terra Terra Terra Terra Terra yay =P

Raging Barbs for me is ok... if only us 4 are going to play, lets put 2 AI Random civs... just to fill the map up (going to be Standart, right ?)

Wow Raging Barbs on Terra map ? It will be a hard continent to invade lol

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 10:34 AM
thats the fun of it, with terra you get a generally smaller initial landmass, so we'll likely fill it up quickly (which means the end of barbs on that continent).

personally id like no AI's so theres more room for us to expand (and that way no one gets lucky and meets them first or conquers them first, or potentially gets conquered by them lol) :P

I'm fine with temperate (with raging barbs i usually prefer rocky, but without deity it should be easier to handle).
Why high sea level though? won't that mean less land for us?

Are we allowing tech trading?

Also I think perhaps having AI will stop us killing eachother right at the start!

So can Vermillion host since he is USA?

I usually play No tech trading, what is all your preferences?

AI's can be good for that, but it'll bunch people up more (and who knows, Julius might be forced to block YOU in lol). And the AI's could have adverse or beneficial effects to those around them.

Sounds good to me for Vermillion to host.

I'm horrible with time zones, but i'll be ready by 8:30 PM EST. I thought the australian time was 13 hours after EST? so like it would be 9:30 AM there?

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 04:24 PM
i like a highlands map because of the hills and high land ratio of the map (smartmap gives great options for getting high land ratios too - but thatd prolly be slow on startin) but terra is always fun with the whole new world to explore later.
i favour quick too, but i can deal with normal :P

Jul 28, 2006, 06:20 PM
hmm.. have either of you tried a standard size terra map high sea level with 5 players? i just tried it and it was a stretch to get 2-3 cities for each civ on the main continent. if we put any ai's its gonna be hard battling just for your second city i think.

Silverkiss
Jul 28, 2006, 06:22 PM
Ahn ? Normally I pull off 3 cities or 2 "ideal" cities.... If I go to war soon I can get up to 7 cities...

Well, Maybe we should just play Continents then ?

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 06:24 PM
terra standard high sea level has about 18 idea cities sites, so only 2 people are gonna manage 7 cities and one person will own 4 and someone is gonna be wiped out very early lol im really thinkin we should avoid ai's and lower the sea level

Silverkiss
Jul 28, 2006, 06:25 PM
Humm... I never played on lower sea levels, maybe I´l lag....

Bad Player
Jul 28, 2006, 06:25 PM

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 06:39 PM
more land makes more lag?

well terra is alright, but i don't think we should have any AI's, or we'll all have trouble getting started

what about medium sea level?

Silverkiss
Jul 28, 2006, 06:42 PM
More land = more cities = more unit/worker/improvments/etc = more lag for my crappy old pc T_T

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 06:48 PM
ah oki, i always thought map size (regardless of land ratio) was the biggest lag causer. i don't notice much difference between terra and highlands, but i notice a huge difference between any standard map and a large map.
but then no ai's on terra high sea level? im really not liking being the one stuck with AI's taking my city sites, and it'll be random who gets stuck with em.

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 06:51 PM
woops, i didnt see the whole discussion about continents lol

id be up for that

Sureshot

Silverkiss
Jul 28, 2006, 06:59 PM
lol ! ok... but on noble the barbs will be too easy (?), no ?

Sureshot
Jul 28, 2006, 07:01 PM
they're be easily manageable
i tested it and after about 10-20 turns or so they started sending occasional axemen, goblins, and spearmen. but it shouldnt be too hard to explore and sentry your entire continent thus eliminating their ability to spawn there.

all the water is making me want to go Lanun lol

We didnīt use any Targeted Spells yet, and its better not to use them...

Talchas made some changes in the targeted spell system (although I heard they would only be fully implemented in 0.15) that might have fixed the multiplayer problems. I'd certainly like you to try it; if you get an OOS error you can still continue the game and agree not to use them anymore.

im up for another on friday, we could start a new game with same players as last time but with Deathling and Nikis added.. im thinkin free for all so we can enjoy the diplomacy :P

having the teams and auto-war was kinda boring cause there was very little interaction except with your team mates (we had a 4 player game but only really talkin with team mate cause you don't want to give away too much lol)

We could stat anew this fri. with new peeps, that sounds good. I also agree to the FFA. diplo can be great. We could still do no tech trading to avoid the tech hoarding. Im up for anything, but no rocky plz, Julius and I had super crappy land, all tundra and mountains on our continent. As for playing tonite, I am on USA EST (currently 4:33 PM), but I dont get off til 8PM (my time). If there is only 2 of us, we could co op against the AI? or ffa i dont care.

edit: Its the 31st of July here btw.

Okay, got you all synched up. So at 8 your time is that when you'll be ready or do you need to mow your lawn or anything first? I sent you an email you can get me on MSN if you like. Man I'm getting goose bumps about playing FFH with a real person.

that time sounds good sureshot. I have to pick up the kid from the sitters, then I should be home around 8:30ish my time. Last time we met here in the forums, then I hosted a direct IP game. We had very minimal lag, and 1 drop, thats it. It worked very well IMHO. I will check here around 8:30ish and see how many takers we have. :)

I must say that IMHO, FFH2 MP is waayyyy better than SP. Again...just my opinion. Any one else agree?

the multiplayer is especially fun because theres world events (like orthus' appeareance, or archerons) going on that everyone can appreciate (and its always fun to say "&*@%! ORTHUS COMING STRAIGHT FOR ME!!!!!")

LOL! Ya, that coupled with raging barbs can be brutal.

its fun, starts the game off with everyone having a shadowy powerful common enemy to discuss and worry about (its the player civilizations against the barbarians!).

it'd be fun to do a game with Infernal as the enemy and make them super powerful (change their units to be really cheap for them to make and increase their strength), but that would require making a mod of the mod lol

I'm keen to get into it to kill other players to tell the truth.

or be killed lol

mostly i like the fact that if you do war against a human player they won't do blatantly stupid things making the victory hollow (AI's do some really dumb things at times).

I agree its even better in MP, I played it in LAN. I would like to play it in MP with you sooooo much but unfortunately I dont have ADSL at home. But maybe this winter... Or maybe even next week, I have something on my mind...

Would you guys like to post some screenshots and After Action Reports tomorrow? (I know that you don't want to give away your domestic secrets while game still lasts but I'm really interested in how will this game turn out) Just a short writeup by each player... It is balance testing after all ;)

i would have liked to see vermillions land after the barbs were through with him... thats one of the good things about teams though, you get to see what is going on in other peoples lands (like orthus rampaging through bad players lands pillaging like crazy with nothing either of us could do to stop him lol)

My land was stellar, which is why I deceided to risk it and expand to get all of it. 3 food resources + copper in capital radius, and much of the same as far as I could see. :D . Well...it was all for not when the liz showed up lol. However, that is not the case in the current game......

Its the liz rangers u gotta worry about. 3 move worker thieves is what they are.
