No combat sound?? How odd.

Great news for MacBook owners though!

on the MacBook. The reviewer only played for a few hours and did not seem to come close to end of game performance issues. Still hopeful, however.

I'll be playing my first game with the map setting on "microscopic."

That is encouraging news about the MacBook -- I'm going to wait out until there are extensive tests/reviews (I have a 2.0 GHZ with 1.5 GB RAM -- so a slightly better configuration then the reviewer.) Hopefully a demo will come out too!

Don't hold your breath on the demo.

I just posted with some thoughts on the MacBook performance based on my experience with a Dell lappy a couple of months ago. (it's over in the "Which Macs Will Work" if you're curious.) Bascially, I think MacBook owners with enough RAM are in business.

You got that right! I was up until 2 last night, and the wife was NOT happy. Civ is definitely a single man's game!

My wife doesn't mind. It's all about balance and picking your times appropriately. (e.g. if she wants to go out dancing tonight, don't even think about mentioning Civ)

I've retired, but I can assure you it doesn't work quite like that.

i had the decency to forwarn my wife as to the release date of civ 4, and the likelihood that i might be up ... late ... a little after release.

Not to jump on the bandwagon... but I actually make salsa for the experience. The only problem comes around four in the morning, when you're bleary-eyed from looking at the screen, you've got residual salsa on your fingers and you reach toward your face...

I'm a member of the Civ, Chips & Salsa club too! My favorite snack is the baked Tostitos & salsa. :D

I've generally been a Pace hot kind of guy... and Lite Tostitos so I can pretend that I'm not getting fatter sitting and playing computer games for hours.

Lately I'm looking for more variety in my salsa though.

Man I always end up with the salsa all over my hands, and consequently the keyboard. That and all the salt they put on the chips.

Sam's Club salsa is good and cheap ($1.50 per jar), and there's lots of it! I also

(pardon me AlanH, I need parting shot on this)

There are a number of boutique salsas available, but really I go for Paul Newman's Spicy myself - and the chips that work for me are *triangular* not circular white corn Tostitos or similar. If you must, drink Sol with it but in reality let's be honest with each other: Coca Cola.

Thanks in advance for the momentary reprieve, AlanH.

oh dear god the copy has been shipped and I just can't wait. my friends tell me that Leonard Nimoy narrates in places. That's Mr. Spock, yep. I EVEN get Mr. Spock narrating in places. This is going to make me happier than a 10 bugs in 10 rugs!

And they enhanced the religion section, I understand, too! I've ALWAYS wanted them to enhance the religion part of it. What's next for Civ 5? Sophisticated economics? Radically enhancemements to the regional and global economics system? Wouldn't it be great if you didn't just have wine in your territory but a global wine market? I really hope that sometime soon Civ develops economic sophistication. It would be kind of a holy grail for me.

Actually, I think they have done that.

I'm still trying to work it all out, but you can trade wine (or other luxuries) with your neighbours. So, for example, I have two vineyards but no gold mines. Mahatma Ghandi offered me a trade so we both have one vineyard and one gold. (And happiness did ensue :king: )

CtP had an extremely basic version of this- to simulate having a monopoly, the more duplicates of a luxury you had, the more benefit you would get from it. AI's would make you pay more in trade depending on how much of it you already had.

It will be interesting to read insidemacgames.com's review. Their preview was glowing. (http://www.insidemacgames.com/previews/view.php?ID=218)

But the hard reality seems to be performance issues. We'll see.

IMG reviewers seem to have amazing luck when it comes to game performance for most games. I'd make sure to temper their review with the user ratings as well. As usual, the truth lies somewhere between.
