Actually the game was pretty lousy for the most part (yes, I actually watched), except for the beginning and the penalty kicks. They all just seemed so tired after the first twenty minutes... Germany-Portugal was a better game.
But I was definately glad to see Italy win yesterday.
Grats. :)

I'm very very proud of Italy having won the World Cup. Where I'm from, there's LOTS of Italians in this city. We shut it down -- partied damn hard!

(I have no problem with Algerians playing on the French team. It makes sense, as far as their history goes.)

Rhye

I have no problem of any kind with a "black" team. After all, we know very well that France had a lot of colonies, and most of them are actually 100% French now.
However I can apologize a French person who may see his team as weird as the % of them is so overrapresented compared to the population

Bolleque
Jul 11, 2006, 03:04 AM
But what is the problem as long as they play good? If Black French plays better than White French - they should play. This is the market :)

the media in england has completely overlooked the french-african team saga. all we hear from france is that every french person stil loves zidane. it's nice to know that that's not the case.

EDIT: does anyone know if there is a name given to that chant that the italian fans do? it sounds like the beginning of that white stripes song.

Will they be Champions of Europe too? Good luck to the Azzurri!

Given the current political climate, Italy-Romania is going to be a very tense match, don't you think Rhye? :)

Down with xenophobia! Hurray for Romania! :)

I can't believe the amount of bullsht in that thread. A huge majority of French love Zidane, even though he fcked it up. As for the amount of blacks, all those players ARE French, 2 or 3 were born outside France and moved to France when they were kids. Besides, France is a country with a long and big tradition of immigration. If you only look at football, it goes back a very long way, with Kopa, Platini, Tigana, Fernandez... so this is the best thing that can happen to a country in which someone like Le Pen came once second in the elections.

As for the Eurocup, there's about half of the teams qualified that can actually win it, with no clear favourite.

Yes - they put all the immigrants in to camps next to the channel tunnel, so that they can illegally get in to the UK.:D:rolleyes::mischief:

Harrier, it looks like you're quick to sum up. The Sangatte centre was a no man's land of immigrants who wanted to emigrate to the UK but were refused entry to that country. It was a shameful one, agreed, but remember it WAS (and not is) not even 1% of the immigrants that went in that centre. So choose your words a bit more carefully before you say "all immigrants".
Now, I fight everyday against Sarkozy's immigration policy, so I'll be the first to accept the current French position on immigration is a disgrace, but you can't say that over the last 2 centuries France hasn't had a long and rich immigration history.

/nationalistic rant on
When France won the world championship, all I could hear even here on the ITALIAN Alps was about France.
Now that Italy is the world champion and this thread is dedicated to ITALY, all I can read is about France. A perfect example of the megalomania of our "cousins", I'd say Zidane is a real french in this, perfectly representative of such arrogance and therefor loved and defended by the French even when blatantly in error.

Come on... He did something wrong and there's no excuse for it, but say he's a disgrace... Rarely a sportsman has been so talented and so humble. You can't be serious. Unless you don't like sport. A moment of folly cannot erase a career of grace and humility: Here's a small reminder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYUtKKbBTkw

Zidane, arrogant?...

When you do something blatantly wrong but put the blame on the others with the excuse you were provoked, you are indeed arrogant. When Totti spit in Korea and was expelled there was no such petty justification, and he was actually highly criticized by italian press. Only French (not just Zidane, the WHOLE FRANCE) could blame solely Materazzi for what has happened and call Zidane a perfect gentleman.

dionysos2048
Jun 04, 2008, 08:25 AM
I think you're mistaken onedreamer. While indeed most people thought at first that Materazzi had said or done something a lot worse than what he actually did (which I'm sure you'll agree is understandable), Zidane was criticized by many in France (but of course these may not be the news that made the front page of Italian media). I personally would have liked him to apologize, but nobody's perfect. What most refused to do, however, was stating he was a bad person, an arrogant man, or a disgrace...
Again, what he did that day was wrong and stupid, most French, agree on that. But it's just not enough to erase over 10 years of joy, success, and humility. That would be being ungrateful.
If you don't believe me I'll provide you the links showing criticism in the French media.

onedreamer
Jun 04, 2008, 08:27 AM
If you think I am mistaken then go about reading french press the day after.
Btw:
1) he did not apologize
2) I do not believe that a person behaves perfectly for 10 years, the whole career, and makes such a mistake right in the end. If had could say to have self control, then that was the best moment to show it.

Instead, he, the whole team, and the whole France, accused Materazzi to be the Devil to have provoked him and made the God APPEAR to do a little mistake. Heh.

I don't know if Spain is as good as the predictions I've read about contend. They always seem to fall apart during these tourneys somewhere along the line... until they prove me wrong, I can't see them in the finals.

That being said, I don't see a clear favourite personally. Germany looks good, so does Portugal, and, believe it or not, Romania. I'm not going for anyone this year (Slovakia, as usual, did not get there), so I'll just sit back and enjoy every game.
