View Full Version : Severely annoying problem stemming from use of Civ IV

Hi. I recently got Civilization IV for Macintosh and installed it, and encountered no problems until my third game. When I quit that game, I noticed a thick black line around things that weren't supposed to have thick black lines, or at least I had never set my preferences as such. Then I noticed when I clicked on something, like iTunes, a computer voice would tell me what I was clicking on. "iTunes, iTunes, iTunes scrollbar" or "Finder Window, Finder Window, Applications, Civ IV." This happens every time I click on anything. I decided that a restart might get rid of the problem and then I noticed that in the apple pulldown menu Restart and Shut Down are listed twice. I restarted but the problems persisted. I screen captured some of the visual problems but I can't provide samples of the audio problem, which is definitely the most annoying. I could live with the thick black line and the double Restart and Shut Down, but I can't listen to music or anything without it being interjected with "iTunes, iTunes, iTunes." I tried to uninstall everything Civ on my computer but the problem remains. My questions are: how do I fix this and if I do fix it will it happen again when I play Civ?

Here are the screen captures:

Thanks for any and all help.

Sounds like VoiceOver got enabled. Open the Universal Access system pref to turn it off. No idea how Civ IV could have enabled it though.

It sounds like you have some of the accessibility options turned on. I don't know how they could be related to Civ IV but you should have a look at the Universal Access control panel and anything else that is designed for sight imparied users.

Ha! Interesting, I turned off VoiceOvers and that fixed everything. Thank you so much! My theory was that Civ needed something like that to be on to enable the voices ingame and subsequently turned that option on. The problem was, I didn't know where to search, and I didn't know that one thing was the cause of all the problems. Thanks so much again!!!

Hitting Command-F5 turns it on, so you could have done that, and you could again.

I dont know if I accidently hit command-F5 as well, but I've had the same thing happen to me after playing Civ 4 (it happened in a user I setup specifically for Civ 4). Very interesting that it happened to someone else.

It would be particularly easy if you use the Quicksave feature, since that's Shift-F5. Very easy to hit the wrong modifier there.

Note that you can disable the VoiceOver hot key combo in System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts. Scroll down to Universal Access/Turn VoiceOver On or Off, and uncheck the checkbox.
