View Full Version : Civ4 sound problems and fixes
Brad Oliver Jul 17, 2006, 12:03 PM Just to be clear, the just-released beta patch does fix some sound bugs in Mac Civ4, but some sound bugs remain.
We know about these other bugs and should have most (if not all) of the sound bugs fixed when we go final on this patch. At this point, we don't need any more data about sound problems you are encountering; I believe we have all the info we need.
We're all very excited that the patch seems to help most everyone, and we will continue to make fixed going forward. We're not done yet! :)
thegreatluke Jul 17, 2006, 12:06 PM Hi Brad.
Thanks for working so hard on making us spoiled whiners happy! ;)
Do you guys know if any bugs causing the game to crash or freeze have been fixed? My copy has a problem where, upon meeting Tokugawa for the first time, the game freezes and a hard restart is required. I just want to check before starting a game with random opponents.
Thanks,
tgl
Brad Oliver Jul 17, 2006, 01:59 PM Do you guys know if any bugs causing the game to crash or freeze have been fixed?
Yes, but it'd be impossible to say with certainty without a) info about your Mac, b) the version of OSX you are using. Intel-based Macs with ATI hardware have a known bug that can cause total lockups as you describe. Turning off multisampling is known to eliminate (or greatly reduce) those particular crashes/lockups.
iamliberal Jul 17, 2006, 02:26 PM Brad, thanks for all your hardwork at aspyr and for taking time for us here at civfanatics :p
Just letting you know that my performance greatly improved with the beta patch. I have 1.8 singl g5 powermac, radeon 9600, 1.5 gb ram. Game is much smoother just scrolling around the map, viewing city screens, and scrolling between cities while in the city screen. (I just can't break the old habit of "entering" a city to adjust production and stuff, lol.
One bug I'm still having is that when I select global view (or zoom out to global view), the globe does not display properly. It shows Tokugawa's face, or Victoria's one time, super large. I was able to view the globe almost correctly twice when I viewed it right after loading the game. It's a minor problem, but would like to be able to use it in time.

It seems like it shows the face of the last person you talked to, to me. If you haven't talked to anyone in the current game session, it doesn't display.

Yes, this is a bug in OSX that we don't have a workaround for. You may be able to eliminate it by decreasing the globe view detail, decreasing your screen resolution, decreasing texture detail or turning off anti-aliasing. Each of these options will reduce VRAM usage, which is what is causing the globe view to fail (it eats up a lot of VRAM at the highest setting).
galganog Jul 17, 2006, 03:55 PM My Game after playing it for a long time slows down greatly but if i quit and start it up again it is faster for about 10 turns could it be a memory leak or something with the cache?
iamliberal Jul 17, 2006, 05:00 PM I'm pretty sure I already have my video settings turned down as low as possible by default because I have the lowest processor spec. But I do have a radeon 9600 with 256mb vram, so I'm surprised that the globe view thing would be a problem for lack of vram. But then again, what on earth do I know about how these things work?!
I spent a few hundred dollars to upgrade that video card last year, and went through a lot just to get that. Why is it so hard to get better video cards for macs?
Btw, I too notice that sometimes when I restart I get better performance again for awhile. I've had a few crashes when the restart was not voluntary, lol, but it wasn't very often and maybe won't happen at all since the beta patch.
awb Jul 17, 2006, 05:57 PM Else than a few combat sounds disappearing, music going in and out, and problems with the globe, everything seems to be going pretty well (though this is only from after playing approximately 30 minutes with the patch). I'm on a MacBook 2 GHZ with 2 GB of RAM.

I had the same problem with a Radeon 9650 with 256MB VRAM.
By accident, I found that turning the quality up actually solved the problem. :wow: Try "medium" for the three graphics levels, antialiasing of 2, high detail terrain on, low-res textures off, globe view buildings disabled off. That's working for me in a 1440x900 window.

I can confirm that. With low resolution the globe view shows "black bricks" or "red bricks" instead of landscape.
I have this video card too and the game works fine with all graphic options pushed to max. limit except this antisaliasing thing which I left at zero as it was the default setting and I have absolut no idea what this is good for!
iamliberal Jul 18, 2006, 12:48 AM Thanks for the suggestion... I'll need to play around with it some more (nevr occured to me to experiment with *increasing* graphics lol), but first imipression is that the higher settings DO make the globe view appear almost perfect (no more leader faces the size of jupiter), but a few blocks of black or red in the norhtern hemispher are randomly there.
I"m trying not to get into playin civ tonight because.. well, I need a break before my laundry piles higher and I get carpotonal, lol
Brad Oliver Jul 18, 2006, 02:04 AM By accident, I found that turning the quality up actually solved the problem. :wow: Try "medium" for the three graphics levels, antialiasing of 2, high detail terrain on, low-res textures off, globe view buildings disabled off. That is absolutely fascinating! Any idea which of the settings made it work?
iamliberal Jul 18, 2006, 02:36 AM I'll experiment when I play tomorrow night, but I forgot to mention that although increasing the graphics improved the Globe View, it did seem to decrease performance in normal views - scrolling the screen right and left, etc. So I probably won't play regularly with the higher settings on just to see the globe view.
But like I said, I'll experiment when I play tomorrow night...
thegreatluke Jul 18, 2006, 10:11 AM Yes, but it'd be impossible to say with certainty without a) info about your Mac, b) the version of OSX you are using. Intel-based Macs with ATI hardware have a known bug that can cause total lockups as you describe. Turning off multisampling is known to eliminate (or greatly reduce) those particular crashes/lockups.
I'm running a stock 1.83 GHz MacBook Pro under 10.4.7 (build 8J2135a).
I didn't know that. Next time I play (today) I'll try a game with multisampling off and see what happens when I meet Tokugawa.
dmichaeln73 Jul 18, 2006, 10:33 AM I have a quick question regarding the three graphic settings. When I try to change them I am told that the changes will not take effect until I restart. When I restart everything is the same. Am I missing something here.
AlanH Jul 18, 2006, 10:47 AM I also am playing the game on a under-spec machine. I have a PowerMac G4 1.25 GHZ with a radeon 9000 64MB and 768 megs of memory.
I believe these are your system specs. You don't say what you are trying to change from --- to.
If you stuck on minimum settings, and if you are playing on a minimum-spec or below-spec system, then maybe the game overrides your settings and enforces minimum graphics?
dmichaeln73 Jul 18, 2006, 11:04 AM That must be it Alan. I don't expect to play with the setting at anything other than low. I just wanted to play with it a little. To possibly see what the game could look like. I remember someone saying that you could kill the opening message saying that I don't meet minimum requirements. I wonder if disabling that would let me play around with the settings. I will try when I get home. Just to let you know off topic. I have played several games. I dont go any larger than standard map. I am very happy with my performance. With low expectation going in, and taking a 54 dollar chance when I purchased the game. I feel I'm getting my moneys worth. The patch has helped incredibly. I now have most of my sounds. No combat sounds though. Even the music is there full time after the first era.
macwhiz Jul 18, 2006, 08:01 PM That is absolutely fascinating! Any idea which of the settings made it work?
I did some testing, and I found that I could make the bug come back if I changed "Globe Quality" to "Low" and restarted the game. It would stay present, even if I turned the quality to "Medium," until I quit and restarted the game. Upon restarting with "Globe Quality" previously set to "Medium," the globe view was back to perfection (aside from a lengthy rainbow spin during the first zoom-out at the transition point, which appears normal).
Changing the texture checkboxes didn't appear to make a difference.

You're absolutely right; I was able to reproduce it on my Mini by tweaking just that one setting. So definitely, changing the Globe Quality to "Medium" instead of "Low" will do the trick. I believe you might have to restart to get it to stick.
If you are on a low-end Mac and you get the warning dialog about not being able to play, you'll find that Civ4 forces your settings back down to low each time the warning appears. To stop this from happening, edit the CivilizationIV.ini file (located in ~/Documents/Civilization IV) and change the line that has "HideMinSpecWarning" so that it reads "HideMinSpecWarning = 1"

Thanks for the help on that one Brad.
bio_hazard Jul 19, 2006, 02:48 PM I don't get one of those messages on my Powerbook. I'm guessing it is based primarily on the video card?
brooklyn boy Jul 23, 2006, 09:22 PM I'm about to buy a new computer. It will be a mac. I must play CIV IV. I'll be able to use the highest quality settings with a brand new machine, right?
My old computer has these stats (I'm so unbelievably bad with understanding what any of this means):
Machine Model: iBook G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.07 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.5f0
This computer cannot play CIV IV right?
And again, one of those new duel core Intels are fine, right?
(sorry for my stupidity, but I've been reading this forum like every day since I saw CIV came out for MACs that I have finally desided to try and post and I hope this post is in the right place)
Cheers.
iamliberal Jul 24, 2006, 12:08 AM Brooklynboy, welcome to cvivfanatics! I'll let others who are more savvy make recommendations on machines. But my understanding is that all of the new intel macs run civ4 great. I'm on a 2 year old powermac g5 and it runs it ok more or less, so I can't imagine anything 2 years newer wouldn't be better.
gidds Jul 24, 2006, 03:48 AM Besides the fix on the sound in the final version, make sure that you also fix the graphical bugs. (Turning of citys, irrigation in purple and black).
As you are the prog wizard on this game....could you in a simple way give me explanation on how to make the Dutch civ into this version. I was suprised that it isnt even in the pc MOD that is arriving soon.
Anyway, good show lads of the Mac civvers thingy..
:D
Beamup Jul 24, 2006, 04:49 AM Yes, the new Intel iMacs run Civ4 at max settings beautifully. I know this because I'm doing it. ;)
brooklyn boy Jul 24, 2006, 06:58 AM Cheers! I'm stoked!
I've been in CIV dormancy for like months now and am going crazy.
Welnic Jul 24, 2006, 10:34 AM The dual core Intels run Civ 4 fine if they have a ATI X1600 graphics card. That means the iMacs and Macbook Pros. The computers that use the Intel GMA950, the Macbook and the Mini, do not work that well. I have a Mini which does a great job in my living room playing music and playing movies on my TV. But the trial run I did on with Civ 4 was pretty painful. If I bought one of those machines looking to run Civ 4 I would be disappointed.
Brad Oliver Jul 25, 2006, 11:05 AM Besides the fix on the sound in the final version, make sure that you also fix the graphical bugs. (Turning of citys, irrigation in purple and black).
Right now, the "black death" bug (which could more accurately be the "random colored death") is not on our list of fixes for the patch.
The info that it can be eliminated by zooming out to globe view and back in is probably the best short-term fix for this until we can figure out what's going on - it's a time-consuming bug to track down, to be sure.
iamliberal Jul 25, 2006, 12:44 PM Oh, I never heard about that zooming out and back in quick fix, thanks Brad.
AlanH Jul 25, 2006, 02:19 PM You might want to try just toggling the grid as an alternative workround. It works when the globe view is screwed up. Anything that forces a redraw is likely to fix graphics glitches.
iamliberal Jul 30, 2006, 01:36 PM When all the soldiers go black, I tried zooming out to globe view and back, and that workaround did not work. I tried Alan's toggling grid view and that did not work either.
I'm using 1.61 beta, I tried checking for updates because I read the non-beta version was released the other day and it said "no updates available", so is the new real patch identical to the beta patch, or do I need to do something?
Bazzalisk Jul 31, 2006, 05:10 AM For some reason even with the revision A patch I get no music in-game -- unless I specify a custom music folder. For some reason I can specify the game's soundtrack folder as my custom music folder and I get music, but otherwise I get none.
System is a Quad G5 tower running OS X 10.4.7

This thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=177675) links to an updater on MGF that appears to be the new version. It still doesn't seem to exist on Aspyr's site, and so your software won't see it. I don't know if it will fix your black soldiers, though.

Thanks..

mtmcdowell Aug 05, 2006, 02:14 PM I loaded the final version of the patch for Civ IV after trying the beta version. The beta version was great, but the full patch is not great. Now there is sound for a little while, but after a few minutes we hear loud pops after which the sound cuts out. I tried re-installing the original then reinstalling the patch, but still had the same problem. I am running on 1.8 GHz G5 with 1 GB RAM. The OS is 10.3.9.
AlanH Aug 05, 2006, 02:17 PM The sound issues seem to be OS-version sensitive. I think Brad has said that 10.4.7 is the best one for sound system compatibility due to fixes in Apple's OpenAL support.

Yep, that fixed it. Didn't realize what sounds we were missing. Thanks
Boer Aug 07, 2006, 12:53 AM Yep, that fixed it. Didn't realize what sounds we were missing.
... but there are still number of them missing. For me, wonders do not produce sound during animation (could be because I have music off?), and neither do some units, e.g. settlers, workers, scouts while defending. Also the related attacking sounds are missing. All barbarian animals remain silent (should they keep noise?).
Lots of work to do...
civfemme Aug 18, 2006, 07:40 PM Throwing my hat in on the sound problems as well. Mac in question is a 1.83ghz Intellimac with 128mb graphics card and 512mb ram. Most of the sound files that are related to wav come up fine, but none of the mp3 based ones want to play. The files seem to be there and named correctly. Civ was on the harddrive already at 10.4.4 and the os was upgraded to 10.4.7. Patch installed. Tried a reinstall of civ due to the upgrade and nope...still no sound. Frustrating as it's running fine on a g4 powerbook
Graphics are working brilliantly well, though, so thanks for that part of the patch :)
Harker207 Oct 10, 2006, 05:18 PM Hey... just downloaded the available demo... running an intel iMac G5 and 10.4.8. The sound did start popping in some horrible ways and making some whining noises that caused me to mute the whole thing for fear of busting my speakers. When I tried to unmute it, the pops came back, and no audio. I see from this thread that sound problems appear common with Civ IV, but with my full copy coming in the mail in the next few days, are these the problems I have to look forward to, or will this patch that was mentioned fix them?

The sound in the patched game is much better than it used to be. I have not experienced popping with the patched game but experienced it intermittently with the unpatched game.
Some sound issues remain, but I have had no reason to turn sound off in the game. Although the experience seems to vary from machine to machine.
(But I'd also be surprised if the demo doesn't include the patch code as the demo postdates the patch so that is not a good portent.)

I still get exactly this routinely. For me, the patch didn't change that in the slightest.
XxtraLarGe Oct 11, 2006, 10:11 AM I still get the popping on the patched version of Civ IV on OS 10.3.9. I think the sound code is simply messed up.
Ninnemand Oct 26, 2006, 07:48 PM I am also getting the "popping" sound. If I mess with the keyboard volume up / down the sound comes back for 5 seconds then pops again and nothing. I am running on 20" Imac g5 1.8, 1 gb RAM, osx 10.3.9. I have installed the patch successfully, however the version number does not indicate so. Can anyone help us poor soundless players?
Dave
AlanH Oct 26, 2006, 07:51 PM I believe Brad said there was a problem with the audio software in 10.3.9 and recommended upgrading the OS. Of course, now probably isn't the best time to buy Tiger, with Leopard just around the corner.
Ninnemand Oct 27, 2006, 07:03 AM Digging further into these message boards, it looks like the Rev A patch does not work on OS 10.3.9. This info should be stated on the download text /websites. Not sure what you mean by the patch not working with 10.3.9. I downloaded & installed it, and the patch made a significant difference to my graphics performance. The bad thing is the sound isn't working properly, which is extremely frustrating.
dmichaeln73 Nov 13, 2006, 10:01 AM I have just a quick question about the sound popping in OS 10.3.9. I was using 10.4.8 until a few days ago. I had a major problem with my system and did not have 10.4 install disk to fix it with. I had to go back down to 10.3.9. This is when I started noticing the sound popping and cutting out problems. I see on this thread that there seems to be an issue with 10.3.9 and the sound. I have both patches on my system and was wondering if anyone had just tried the Beta patch with any luck. I really got used to the sound and would like it back. I'm not big on the idea of spending 29.99 on the expansion that might or might not fix it. But I would be willing to use the beta patch until then.
Skippy_Kangaroo Nov 13, 2006, 12:45 PM I'm not big on the idea of spending 29.99 on the expansion that might or might not fix it.
If a patch for Vanilla is only available through the expansion pack I would imagine that there would be some very unhappy customers who might well approach local consumer protection authorities to complain about such behaviour. Imagine - you release a broken product and then charge extra to fix it! I don't think so.
I suspect that Aspyr is sensible and you should not have to spend 29.99 for the expansion pack in order to get a fixed Vanilla. They should release a patch for it around the same time they release Warlords.
AlanH Nov 13, 2006, 01:36 PM This assumes there are fixes, of course.
Some problems, such as Open AL bugs in Panther, may not be fixable by Aspyr, and Apple will probably not do anything about them either. In that case the only solution is an upgrade to Tiger, or to Leopard when it is released.
Ninnemand Nov 13, 2006, 02:33 PM The Beta patch works well with OS 10.3.9. Of course I haven't "allowed" my kids to play recently because it was interferring with school work.

I find it hard to believe that this would be a problem that is unfixable. 10.3.9 was listed as a minimum system requirement. That implies that the game was tested with this OS. They had to know that it did not work. I would love nothing more than to drop 80 bucks for a copy if Tiger, but it would not be for Civ IV. If the game will not play with sound in 10.3.9 than it should not have been listed as minimum spec. This makes 2 Civ games now without propor sound. I will try to use the Beta Patch and see if I get sound. If not then I guess I will be dusting off the Civ III.
Premier Jan 15, 2007, 02:50 PM Just FYI -
Recently, I did a clean install of an app called OSS 3D - it is an audio enhancement plugin for iTunes. Apparently, the new version (2.1) also 'enhances' the sound of the entire OS/system.
Anyway, after installation, the CIV IV audio was so crackly, it was virtually unplayable. I uninstalled OSS 3D and this got rid of the problem. (It's unfortunate because I love this plugin when listening to iTunes.)
Just a heads-up for those of you who might use OSS 3D - this was on a Mac Pro, by the way.

It is indeed sad that nobody ever managed to fix this, as it greatly affects the game play. Nobody seems pleased with the perfomance (http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19218&show=reviews) and Aspyr really doesn't seem to care.
wookitus Jan 28, 2007, 11:31 AM The new rev B patch killed all of my sound except ambient and music. I had sound in the previous version. This is frustrating. I have a PowerMac G5 1.8ghz on 10.4.8. Anyone else have this problem with the patch?
NoMan Jan 28, 2007, 12:51 PM I have been using the new patch since it came out on the 24th. I experienced my first crash (to desktop) today and the crash log (see spoiler) seems to indicate audio/Quicktime is the culprit. I opened a ticket with Aspyr. I have been pretty happy with this patch until now. I have not experienced any major sound issues. I can hear all the battle sounds and the Nimoy voice-overs, although it sometimes skips.

Skippy_Kangaroo Jan 28, 2007, 02:30 PM I have been using the new patch since it came out on the 24th. I experienced my first crash (to desktop) today and the crash log (see spoiler) seems to indicate audio/Quicktime is the culprit.
That seems to be the reason for all the crash to desktop occurrences I have experienced too. I sent a crash log to Brad at Aspyr and in response he asked whether my machine was dual core. I remember some earlier complaints from him about Core Audio which may suggest that this is an issue that is 'known'. It has certainly been present prior to the current revision. Maybe we can hope that Apple might fix something with 10.4.9 or at least change something that Aspyr can work with for Rev. C.
JoAT Jan 29, 2007, 06:45 AM ... I sent a crash log to Brad at Aspyr ...
I'm not sure if Brad is the best point person to send these to anymore. I'm under the impression that he wasn't working on the latest patches (or even Warlords?) as he has been toiling away on Star Wars: Empire at War. You may want to send your reports to Aspyr tech support too...

SteffenUL Feb 02, 2007, 03:20 PM The new rev B patch killed all of my sound except ambient and music. I had sound in the previous version. This is frustrating. I have a PowerMac G5 1.8ghz on 10.4.8. Anyone else have this problem with the patch?
Me too. No battle sounds at all, no sounds when picking up coins, tech or experience. No sweet tingle of coins. Music and ambient seem OK. Combat has become a strangely peaceful affair.
Mouseovers are on and off, not much of a change I think.

I also have the exact same problem, but the patch represents such a marked improvement in almost every other way (performance, no more popping sounds), that I am by and large pleased with it. :goodjob:

I wonder if you're seeing an improvement in performance because the processor is not having to process the (now non-existant) sounds?
I Applied the revision b patch as soon as it came out but haven't even fired up the game once since then, so I can't really say if it affected my install negatively or not...
Bazzalisk Feb 10, 2007, 05:58 AM Civ IV Vanilla: With the Rev A patch I had full sounds apart from the odd fact that the music wouldn't play unless I specified a custom music directory I had also never experienced a crash. With the Rev B patch I get no battle sounds, no Leonard Nemoy and the game just hung so hard that I couldn't switch apps (I could still login via ssh).
I can now connect to Gamespy, but I don't really want to anyway ;)
System Specs: PowerMac Quad G5 2GB RAM, OS X 10.4.8 (fully up-to-date on all software updates).
Where should I be reporting this? presumably not here.
Where can I get the Rev A patch from, so that I can downgrade?
AlanH Feb 10, 2007, 06:56 AM You should report it to Aspyr Support (http://support.aspyr.com/).
I believe the Rev A patch is available at 3D Downloads. There's a beta version here ( http://www.3ddownloads.com/Strategy/Civilization%204/Patches/Civilization%20IV%20Installer.dmg ). If you can't find it, PM me. I never throw anything away that might be useful in future :p
