Well, I'm back messing around with Civ again, and I got a very nice early Space Race win. Has anyone beat 1413 AD?
Settler, as you might guess :)
And Great Plains, with a very stringent setup criteria (stone, three food, gems).
Thank heavens for the map program.
A couple of thoughts:
Catherine works well; expansive and popping tons of huts with the scout paid off handsomely. Luck clearly plays a role - I knew I had a keeper when I got a settler and three workers from huts.
Marathon is actually easier than the fast speeds - it is more forgiving. I found it easier to adjust course. I did tiny because bigger is just more clicks for me.
Lots of early workers is key, along with preventing a domination win (I had to gift two of my eight cities to avoid it, which lowered the score). I didn't do extreme micro at the end, but saving fringe forests around the big producers for final chops saved several turns.
