I remember in TAM for Civ3 there was an improved road tech that replaced the Railroad graphics and allowed for increased movements in the later game - required Marble, I believe? Is something like this planned for Civ 4? I always thought it was a nice touch. I seem to recall a replacement graphic for roads released not too long ago to make the dirt roads look like concrete highways in the modern era - perhaps that could be adapted?

It could. It will take some work to get them in as a replacement for the railroads, maybe I'll try that when I need a break from the AI unless Thamis beats me to it. That would certainly reduce the over-powered combination of Legionaries and the current Road Building tech movement bonus, might even make stone a worthwhile resource in the process :)

Aye... my thoughts exactly.
Incidently, relating to the Stone resource - it would probably be applicable to some of the older wonders for a build-speed increase... Stonehenge, Pyramids, that first Oracle, Sphynx, and a few others?

I think I saw the perfect graphics for such roads in some screenshots a while a go. It was paved roads in some Warlords screens. So I guess the TAM team can easely implement this after the expansion.

the current Road Building tech movement bonus
The road building has been implemented as to replace "railroad" (imperial roads), the movement capacity was quite inaccurate with antiquity.
