SGOTM 02 - Tokugawa of Japan

Welcome to the second Civ4 SGOTM, another Gyathaar creation.

You are cast in the role of Tokugawa, mighty leader of the Japanese. Tokugawa's brother has left the island city of Kyoto to avenge the death of his wife and only son. He has travelled to a distant land without finding their murderer. So the brother of Tokugawa will settle and found a new Japanese colony, and the Japanese have sworn to conquer the rest of civilization in order to hunt down and destroy their enemy.

The game is on a Standard size fractal map, modified as only Gyathaar knows how, at Epic speed. All victory conditions are enabled, but the laurels for this contest will be awarded to the fastest teams to achieve a Conquest victory. The number of AI rivals has not yet been revealed. It will be played using version 1.61 of Civ4 with locked modified assets.

Notes:

A. ONLY Civilization IV v1.61 is supported for this SGOTM. All teams will compete for up to four awards - the Gold, Silver and Bronze Laurels for the fastest finishes, and the Wooden Spoons for the lowest scoring finisher.

B. All teams must play the sponsored variant - victory will be awarded for the fastest victory by Conquest.

C. All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

D. Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

1) Comfortable? Well, I have no problem challenging myself to the hardest difficulty, but it's pretty tough to win consistently. So comfort level, diety. I tend to play more multiplayer, though.

I would never presume to define any team captain. I simply nominate one sucker ostensibly sane player as the person who will get the team together for the start, using PMs, emails, or whatever alchemy s/he can bring to bear. After that you're on your own.

Cripes! I don't know how the system would cope with a Japanese team name, and I really don't even want to try to find out. The team name appears in the game save itself, the saved file names, the HTML pages, the forums, the database, and if you win, in the site news pages. It's used as a key for searches all over the system. Way too many places for it to break.

Please can we use Crazy? Or some other English-alphabet name of your choice? Sorry to be so boring :(

With only a little over a week left before we kick this game off, here is the current state of the teams according to my records. Please ...

(1) check that I have included you if you expected to be in the list.

(2) decide how you want to rearrange yourselves, particularly in the case of teams with few sign-ups.

(3) verify your initial coordinator. Player #1 in each assigned team in my list is your current default coordinator.

On Tuesday or Wednesday I'll assign the new players to existing teams who are short of players (fewer than six or seven) and/or to new teams, and I'll open the team threads so that you can start your pre-game discussions. The new teams will then need to get together to decide on team names and leaders.

I've put a link to the relevant post in the first post, as I don't want to maintain sync between two copies of the chart URL while I'm having to switch between the intermittent gotm server and my own web space. My config management skills aren't that effective :blush:

Thanks to everyone who has signed up :thumbsup: We have 137 players, and I have applied my advanced Random Number Generator (TM) to the list of signed up players, and come up with the following list of 21 teams. Team threads will be opening shortly.

I need to know immediately if I have incorrectly omitted or included anyone, or if there are any problems with the team assignments.

The first player listed for each team should take responsibility for PM'ing the other team members to get them together for initial discussions and team hugs.

New Teams 1, 2, 3, 4 need to tell me the team names you would like to use in the next 48 hours. If you don't, I'll base your team name on that of the first player in the list, as I have to brand it into the start saves in time for the start date of August 8th.

Hmm, why not create an official lurker thread, not open to team members but to anyone else? If I was a lurker, I think I would appreciate the chance to discuss my impressions with others, point other lurkers to something really cool in one of the threads, etc. I can imagine the the trash talking thread was one way for lurkers to feel semi-involved, and a dedicated thread might be even better for this purpose.

But really, how would I know, I wouldn't be allowed to read it anyway. ;)

The previous trash talking thread was only really used by players. I would love to have a "sports bar" facility such as you suggest, and have considered it before. But I really have enough to do monitoring access to the team threads without having to police access to an open spoiler thread as well, where all team progress would be discussed.

That's too bad, cause the idea of a "sportscaster" thread sounds intriguing. I do hear you on having to police yet another thread - it has to be a worrying job as is! (so obviously thanks are in order once again AlanH et al)

I too find it too bad that we cannot have such a thread, it would have been very interesting to read after the fact, just as a final spoiler thread. Of course that would depend on the lurkers though. I guess policing it would be just like policing said final spoiler thread, no member of any team still playing could even read it, would it really be that much work? 1. The effort to administer membership would be disproportionate ... after all this is a competition organised primarily for the players and OPEN to spectators.

2. A membership-only Club would not meet the needs of 'drop-in' casual lurkers just wanting to watch the discussions of the game or make small contributions to them.

Just a thought, but couldn't a thread be created entitled SGOTM2 Lurkers Only Sports Bar & Grill? This thread could be only for non players to discuss how different games are going. To be honest, it would be interesting to read after our team had finished the game to see how lurkers saw all the games progressing.

Very Late, but wondering how to become official lurker. Followed several teams through SGOTM1(especially Geezers since I am one) but don't have the experience to play. Have played a few GOTM but this months will be my first submit. Would like to learn more by interacting with different team members and their strategies. Really enjoyed SGOTM1 and looking forward to number2!

There are some people who decide to dedicate their lurking to a single team thread. They can then engage in discussions with that team and become non-playing team members, and must negotiate that role with the relevant team.

If you prefer to lurk in several team threads, then you may do so, but you must not influence their play, as you know too much about other team plans. It is therefore unlikely that you will be able to post in any team threads, as you may let slip competitive information.

I've never played a Succession game before, but dabbled in GoTMs and was interested in joining this SG. I understand the mechanics of SGs (other than posting saves; if someone could point me to a thread on that, that would be great.)

Im most comfortable on Noble, but I can play on Prince aswell if needed, and possibly Monarch although thats stretching it.

I don't have any preference as too who I would like too play with, as long as they are playing on a difficulty level I am comfortable with.

The SGOTM Reference Thread should provide all you need concerning the rules and mechanics of the SGOTM. In addition, you can follow the exploits of the 22 teams we have playing this game by reading their team threads in this forum.

The start date of the next Civ4 SGOTM has not been planned yet. We don't like to rush the teams in the current game, and we won't announce the next one until most of them have completed it.
