Ok. So I just bought Civ 4 today. Then I wondered, how do you get your settler to go to another land that is separated by a body of water? The land i'm in is too full to build more cities but i can't figure out how you get your settler to travel to another land that is separated by water. any tips?

You need to research astronomy to be able to travel across the ocean by building galleons.
You need to research saling to build galleys to carry settlers across small bodies of water connected by coastlines.
However usually the other continent will also be full at this point with rival civilizations that you haven't met yet. (this is for the continents type map) Other maps, notably Terra, will have empty lands for you to discover and colonize.

No problem. In general a great thing to just explore and read is the civilopedia. It tells you what everything does in the game if you know where to look. Don't get discouraged Civ4 has a steep learning curve, but you'll get it.
