View Full Version : Here's a WW1 battleship
TVA22 Mar 06, 2002, 10:30 PM This one's not supposed to be any specific ship, just a rather generic WW1 battleship--a unit I felt was missing from this game from the start. The battleship Firaxis gave us is an Iowa Class, which to me makes no sense, as it represents battleships at the zenith of their technological lives, but not the battleship in it's true hayday. The battleship unit in this game, I thought should be the battleships of Tsushima strait and of course, the one everybody knows, Jutland! So thats when I decided to bridge the gap between ironclad and destroyer. Though I'd still make this one more powerful than the destroyer, but that's just me.
You'll have to make a new unit called "Battlewagon." I'm sure most of you know a battlewagon is a battleship, just another way of saying the same thing. I didn't name it WW1 battleship, because I think that sounds too much like an rts unit, and besides, I like some variety in my units.
Enjoy!
BoneDoc Mar 06, 2002, 10:52 PM Just downloaded it. Very nice work!!! :goodjob:
Ed O'War Mar 07, 2002, 08:43 PM Weren't WWI Battleships also called Dreadnoughts?
TVA22 Mar 07, 2002, 09:52 PM Yes, indeed they were called dreadnoughts. The first modern battleship was infact the HMS Dreadnought.
Hardly anyone is giving me any feedback on this one... I thought it was the best one I'd done yet, plenty of downloads, just no responses. Is the unit not working out okay?

Just one word: screenshots! I want to see what it looks like before I go through the process of actually installing the new unit.
joebasstard Mar 08, 2002, 03:37 AM About your mention of Dreadnoughts-
I recently corresponded with Razorwing about including some naval units to bridge the huge gaps left by the game designers. Prominent among the ships I'd like to see are the Dreadnought and the "Turretship" or "Iron Battleship". The Turretship represents the sea-going battleships between the 1880's and about 1905. This type of ship included the ships in U.S. "Great White Fleet" for example. They were slower, Not as well armored or armed as a Dreadnought, but could easily defeat a Civil-war era ironclad. Another note: Most Civil-War era ironclads were notoriously unseaworthy, because they were basically level with the surface of the water. As well they were slow. They were designed for coastal and harbor use only. On my game I always reduce the ironclad's bombard strength, increase its defense, make it "sink in ocean", and one point slower. Another type of ship, the "Iron Frigate" existed, such as "New Ironsides". The French built the first one, "LaGloire" in about 1859(?). A little slower than a frigate, same attack, more defense, and seaworthy. More expensive than an "ironclad" but a little LESS heavily armored.
I made a complete "default" flic file for the "Iron Battleship" that looks pretty good, But I can't seem to make a unit that won't crash the game. I create a folder under ..Art/units, made an .ini file, copied some wav files from other units, etc. But I'm missing something, and I'm more of a graphics guy than a programmer. What am I doing wrong?
I attached a zip of the Iron Battleship: I only made one flc file so I used it for everything (I'm not doing all that labor until I figure out how to make this work) and I cheated on some things.
I will attach a file that gives many naval units and my ideas of more proper CIV values.
Anyone who wants to help with this or comment is welcome.
Taé Shala Mar 08, 2002, 10:49 AM May we get some screenshots?
spincrus Mar 08, 2002, 01:03 PM It would be so kind of you to add preview graphics of the unit when posting.

Ditto
joebasstard Mar 08, 2002, 04:46 PM [What do they look like?
May we get some screenshots?]
Not sure how to do screenshots. Here's a small jpeg that is easy to download.
joebasstard Mar 08, 2002, 04:48 PM Wow. easier than I thought. Here's TWA22's Dreadnought ("Battlewagon").
TVA22 Mar 08, 2002, 04:50 PM I stated on my other two units, the Chinese Junk, and the Yamato-Class battleship, that I didn't know how to put an animation on here. On my yamato thread, I was directed to a site where I could get animation shop. I tried to download it, and it's taking me 1 hour and 20 minutes to get the program. I have a 56 k. It also slows down my other computer functions. As a result, I don't think I'll be finishing that download.
Personally, I'd rather be working on my next project for this game. The units I'm making are really for me anyway. Unlike Dark Sheer, who takes requests, I've just made units my friends and I want in this game.
So, it's not that I'm lazy... maybe I am, I just loathe the idea of sitting for 1 and a half hours downloading something on my dial-up, which ties up my only phone line. I'll be making and posting my future projects, the Bismark, Japanese Imperial Marines, Kamikaze, B-29 bomber, WW2 aircraft carrier, and perhaps some other infantry units. I'd be happy to post still shots of my units, but I've been reading that the pcx files don't work, so I'm still stuck.
TVA22 Mar 08, 2002, 04:55 PM There's a picture up just as I wrote that! JoeBasstard, you beat me by a couple seconds!! hahaha:lol: Well yes, there they are. They both look a lot alike!. Could make a good transition to one another.
papajohns Mar 08, 2002, 06:26 PM you could always just do a print screen in windows when your making the unit, that way it'll copy it to the clipboard and then just cut it to the size and post the picture...

Your Dreadnought looks great! A good example of Dreadnoughts battling against 'Iron Battleships' would be the Russo-Japanese war, when a small squadron of Japanese Dreadnoughts defeated larger Russian force of "Iron Battleship' style warships.
For screenshots, save your pcx as a .gif or .jpg and attach it.
Dirk Aurel Mar 09, 2002, 05:01 AM Just wanted to say great work TVA22,a WW1 ship was definitely missing, dled your Yamato too.I like battleships a lot,so am looking forward to your Bismarck. As for the B-29,I read you donīt take requests but wouldnīt a B-52 be of more use, the bomber in the game is similar to a B-17 so what we need is one in between WW2 bombers and modern stealth bombers. Well just a suggestion, keep up the good work. :)
stainz Mar 09, 2002, 05:04 AM here,s the Battlewagon

Nice work (-:
Madeira Mar 09, 2002, 07:21 AM I agree with Dirk Aurel, we need a B52 :)
Also looking forward to a WW2 carrier and any other ships you may make.
Good looking Dreadnought!
spincrus Mar 09, 2002, 12:41 PM See? By posting the screenshot, you just added another person to the download count.
Very nice work, can't wait for the new ones!
Sprinthex Mar 10, 2002, 10:14 PM http://www.civ3freaks.8k.com/de-t.gif
TVA22 you are the best unit creater for Civ3 yet...Keep that industrial period rolling with your up-and-coming units!
Awesome work!
Dont forget to visit TVA22's and my CIV3 website at http://www.civ3freaks.8k.com
TVA22 Mar 10, 2002, 10:28 PM lol
thanks for the kind words sprinthex, but I think my units are well below par for this place..
And also, everyone else, be forwarned that our site is in it's infantile stages. But once we get it up and running, I'll be posting my units there, as most of the ones I'm making are being done with a big mp game on a world map in mind that my friends and I am going to have, assuming mp ever comes out.
The Art of War Mar 11, 2002, 10:02 AM It is funny that the Iowa in Civ III has FOUR cannons in each turret when the real Iowas only had 3. Anyway, the battlewagon looks nice. Also, about the Dreadnought, they were only used at the Battle of Jutland and the British had 38 and the Germans had 21.
joebasstard Mar 14, 2002, 10:36 PM TVA22 ! I wonder if you would want to finish the animation for the "Iron Battleship?"
You did such a good job with the Dreadnought, and I don't know if I'll have time: I'm slow in getting all the animations done for the "Ironclad Ram." As you said before, Iron Battleship makes a good ancestor to Dreadnought, and it would be good for simulating the inferior Russian ships vs. the Japanese Dreadnoughts at Tsushima strait.
Anyway, if you want to, I'll send you all the angle views of it.
Also, if you want single-frame views of other units I can easily make 3D models of ships and other machines if I get some pictures. I won't make models of humans, it's too much work with all the body movements.
Joe Basstard
TVA22 Mar 14, 2002, 11:44 PM well, I don't know about the 3d models or anything, really I just get what I need from the still frames. I'm working on some other projects right now, but I have the files you originally posted, and had considered finishing the unit. I take your post to mean that I have your permission? But anyway, I'm sort of sick of naval units at the moment, I'll be back to them to make a ww2 era carrier, and maybe then I'll work on the iron battleship.
The Art of War Mar 15, 2002, 01:15 PM Yeah, TVA22 ROCKS!!! WHOO!! WW2 Carrier!!!
Scipio Africanu Mar 15, 2002, 01:20 PM TVA22, will you be using my base animation for the WWIICarrierDefault for your animation? if so please give proper credit.

I use the 3D model to generate 2D views from any angle, with any perspective or lighting I want. It just makes it easier to make realistic still-frame images.
Dark Sheer expressed an interest in doing some of the naval units. I understand being sick of doing the naval units for now. Maybe we can collaborate on something in the future. You have my permission to finish the existing Iron Battleship, of course.

TVA22 Mar 16, 2002, 12:20 AM I didn't even know anyone had made a default for an aircraft carrier. So please wait untill I do something wrong before you accuse me.
TVA22 Mar 16, 2002, 12:21 AM Thanks JB
Scipio Africanu Mar 16, 2002, 02:29 AM TVA22, I didn't accuse you of anything, if you may notice the end of that part has a question mark. Then I said "if so" in refrence that its a maybe not an absolute. I was trying to get the facts straight so I wouldn't accuse you of something you didn't do.
TVA22 Mar 16, 2002, 02:52 PM sorry if I came off a bit sharp, just wanted to get things straight. No hard feelings, eh?
Scipio Africanu Mar 16, 2002, 03:11 PM course not, no hard feeling.
joebasstard Mar 16, 2002, 10:42 PM TVA22:
In case you do decide to animate the Iron Battleship, Use the attached file instead of the Default animation I already made. I improved the appearance of the ship. See attached.
joebasstard Mar 16, 2002, 10:46 PM Screenshot of improved Iron Battleship. The previous post is NOT an animation or a completed unit, so don't just download it anyone who is looking for new units.
W.i.n.t.e.r Apr 11, 2002, 08:16 PM WOW- iron ship looks G:):)D !!! Hope sb. gives it a go !!!
alpha wolf 64 May 30, 2002, 01:58 PM Was this unit ever finished?
Wade May 30, 2002, 05:54 PM Yes is anyone working on the Battleship, it'd be great to have it as it Naval forces definatly need to be fleshed out some more.
TVA22 May 30, 2002, 09:07 PM I too would like to have the Iron Battleship... But I won't be making any more units, at least for now. I tried touching up a graphic a few days ago, and I'm just so sick of it right now. I sort of went on a 6 month flicster binge. It's a great program and all, but editing stuff frame by frame is so painstaking, and no fun, not like working with a 3d program, which I don't have, but have tried before... Anyone, this would be a fantastic unit, someone please give it a try!
Smoking mirror May 31, 2002, 09:56 AM I'm gonna do some more industrial era sea units (WWII first, WWI and pre WWI later for my 19thC mod) but my little brother keeps hogging the PC playing on his "championship manager game", so i'm not getting as much done as I'd like. :(
TVA22 May 31, 2002, 10:07 AM Wow! Smoking mirror, I've just got to say, you are without a doubt my fav. unit creator, because you just get so much done, and it all looks so good! Feel free to rework anything that I've already done- I've made some battleships, but am not really satisfied with any of them, and think they are sub-par. I look forward to seeing what you make next!
CivGeneral Jun 21, 2002, 08:07 PM I too would like to have the Iron Battleship -TVA22 Me too :D. Although I am looking for an Armored Cruiser this semes to looks almost similer. (The Armored Cruiser I am looking for looks like the one in the game Imperialism.)
Plumbean Jun 22, 2002, 01:22 PM Very nice job Now you can make your imperial fleet and slug it out with your enemy:D
Crow T Robot Aug 03, 2002, 03:57 PM Is it my imagination or does the BattleWagon / Dreadnought lack civ specific colors?
I have it set up as the early battleship (coal, iron) and Egyptians built a zillion off them but I cant tell them from the French ones because they are all brown.
Outstanding work overall though!

Have u even seen any good unit yet like cumon smoking mirror, kinboat cumon budy get real!!!
Richard III Aug 03, 2002, 07:07 PM Just serving notice that I would love to have working units for the WWI "Great War of 190-?" project a few of us are working on (see thread in customization).
I've already divvied up warships from research as third class battleships, second + 1st class and dreadnoughts, and was hoping to see/use the iron BB as the second and first, and the ironclad frigates from another thread for the third class.
Thoughts? Hopes? Prayers?
R.III
TVA22 Aug 04, 2002, 09:46 PM That was a long time ago, and if you don't like my unit, then don't use it, some people do, and those of us who invested our time in them don't appreciate being flamed by people like you-- if you yourself were smoking mirror or kinboat, who I do recognize as vastly better than myself, then I wouldn't take offense at your insult, but since I don't see any units by VDOG on here, please keep your comments to yourself, thank you VERY MUCH! :) Have a nice day.
J C Woodman Aug 05, 2002, 10:22 AM Hello... I loaded the Battlewagon file into my DYP Mod scenario (along w/ about 40 other new units from this forum). I renamed the file and the .ini file to "Dreadnaught" then created a unit in the scenario... Well when it came time to bulid it... Crash! (Prob. w/ the .ini indicated). Does anybody have exp w/ this unit and changing the name? I intend to try it tonight w/o the name change. I also copied the sound files for the "Battleship" into the "Dreadnaught" file, but I dont see that as affecting the .ini  Well, anyone got an idea?
I am very eager to see this unit in action as it fills a very open slot in the Industrial age navies.
Also, I did try to remove the unit from my scenario, but it still appears in the save game even though removed from all locales. Though my cities did not select it to build, some other AI civ did, thus crashing the game. Any way to fix my save? It was going so well...
And... one last question, is ther more than one "BB" unit posted on this thread or are thse updates of the same unit? Maybe I've dwnloaded the wrong one?
Many thanks for all the hard work though! More units are what we need! We will happily play test em for ya! :D well... most of us happily at least (Vdog)

J C Woodman Aug 05, 2002, 11:01 AM Opps... I mean I loaded " Iron BB" seemingly not "Battlewagon" renamed Dreadnaught.. (see above post). Why are bolth of these units on this thread? Not to be a stickler but shouldnt Iron BB have its own thread? :crazyeye: But anywho, can I change the name of either of these units? I will say that I really like the Iron BB image. :D
thestonesfan Sep 10, 2002, 07:42 AM Did civ-specific colors ever get added to this unit? Other than that, it's perfect!
It does look great in the game, but it's tough to tell who has what floating around!
Nemesis Rex Mar 10, 2003, 11:23 PM I use this unit and have been somewhat annoyed that you can't tell who's unit they are without civcolor markings. So, many months later I got off my a$$ and added some.
Civcolor Dreadnought (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads3/Civcolor_Dreadnought.zip)
Kinboat Mar 10, 2003, 11:37 PM Wow... I think I missed this the first time through. And now here it is a year later :) They both look pretty cool.
CivGeneral Mar 11, 2003, 12:03 AM Zzzzzzzzz... ..Huh What?

A little. Tried to make the towers fall over in the death flc, and I cleaned up little gaps in the aft tower at some angles.
