View Full Version : Hot key for workers?

I'm not getting the best results out of the '\' key for cycling thru workers. First, of course, I have to go thru all the military units. Also, sometimes it finds them, sometimes it doesn't.

I've been assigning ctrl-# keys to each of my workers. Is there an easier way to do this? I'm surprised there isn't a hot-key just for workers.

PS: The 'culture bomb' rocks.

I think it's actually "/" to cycle through your workers. "\" is cycling back through all your units and ENTER is cycling forward. Notice that cycling isn't really a good word here, since I think after you perform an action you'll jump to the closest unit (IIRC) and don't continue to the next one. Performing an action acts like a "reset" here.

I thought 'enter' was 'next turn'?

'enter' when a unit is selected and active. I think it will take you to the next active unit. Try it, I'm not at home right now.

if you zoom out to global view, you can press the unit display button on top of the minimap and select "domestic", it'll put flags on all your workers and settlers so you can find them faster.

F5 is probably better, as you don't have to get the map just right again and it will go to each worker if you so choose. What you nned to do there is just click on the worker category annd assuming all your units aren't showing up the workers alone will show up. That's how I do it anyway, though I'm almost never using it for workers. It's more a matter of trying to find units that you want to delete.

I think that's only at the end of the turn when there are no units left to control. If you are on a unit, pressing [enter] takes you to the next active unit. [shift] + [enter] forces the end of the turn any time.

f5, f11, same difference, although the military advisor does use glowing dots that are a little easier to see than the little flags..

So what happens with F11 if they're in a city (not just talking workers here) with a bunch of other units? Does F11 allow you to isolate just workers (apart from settlers)? It wouldn't make that much of a difference if it doesn't, but F5 will let you isolate any combination of unit or units. I wish I would use it more when it comes time to realizing that my stealth bombers in reserve in a quiet area, stood down, could be spotted right away using F5 instead of poking around in all the cities I thought I put that reserve in!

well, if you're in the habit of leaving settlers and workers fortified in your cities, then f11 is a bit lacking. they can be buried under as many military as you want, and assuming that they're not underneath a settler, you can find them pretty quick. i wouldn't call it better than the military advisor, but it's on par because it offers different, non-troop options as well. you can still click on the worker and hit f11 again and the map will be "just right" again.
now, if we're talking about troops, the military advisor is great. i always use him to find outdated troops to replace, or experienced troops who need an upgrade. also i check with him every turn i'm at war so i don't get backdoored again.
honestly, since i use shift-click to give my workers like 200 years of commands for his one or two cities, they're usually right in the same neighborhood i left them in if i need them; so i don't use either that often to find my workers, i probably would have recommended the military advisor instead if i had remembered, but either will find your workers in about 10 seconds flat.
