What is 3d studio max, and what does it do? does it make unit making easier?

3D Studio MAX is a 3D grafix making software. You can make images and moves w/ it and also units to different games that have 3D grafix. But i don't know if it's used to make new units to Civ3. And it is VERY expensive.
