View Full Version : Poll shows 93% Civers are male, 7% female

Dec 04, 2000, 12:59 AM
Poll #7, "Are you male or female?" was closed today with a total of 571 votes collected in just 26 days. The results are very clear and no recounts are needed.

The poll shows that 93 percent of Civers are male, while only 7 percent are female.

What do you think of this "shocking" results?

Not surprising at all.It just re-inforces that if you ever meet a gal that likes civ,a strong effort must be made to keep her around. You most likely will not find another.

In fact,I am extremely surprised and somewhat disbelieving of 42.

I'm happy to report that my 11-year-old daughter (who did not get a chance to vote in this poll) plays Civ . She doesn't play it very well, but she enjoys exploring until her civilization gets too big to manage and her trade has not kept up so she runs out of money and has civil unrest, etc, etc. Just doin' my part to raise a new generation of gender-stereotype-busting civers.

I think that this poll has taught us a lot of things about the demographics of civ...but also there may be a few other factors we haven't quite understood about the game. More polls such as the one on age needs to be collected before we can even speculate about who plays civ. I think that this may be a situation in which stereotyping may be keeping women from being exposed to civ in the first place. I know that at first glance, it appears to be a war strategy game, but that is not so. Civ does have a strong military aspect, but I would argue that it is "managing" the civilization for success that is the strongest aspect of the game- most women excel at this kind of challenge, not because they are domestic but because they generally develop strong communication skills at earlier age than boys. The fact that 7 percent of players are women does surprise me; I find that figure to be higher than I think I predicted when the poll started. It's also possible that some women didn't vote, that means the figure could be high enough for someone to estimate maybe 10-12 percent playing by next year when Civ III comes out.

This was a really good poll.

Good job, Leowind.

I think we would find more female players, if we "boys" would show a little more manners from time to time. Girls are put off by a lot of "I am the greatest" bragging & so forth. I think the we guys have to take extra steps to let them know that they are welcome. I BTW, taught my daughter ( 24 years old ) how to play Master of Magic& she just loves it.

I don't agree with this poll and know for a fact that alot more percentage of girls play civilization I my self know 7. and the reason you got this outcome was that not all of tham have the internet but the ones who do don't go visit this web site I asked them. and the one thing the girls told me that they really hate on the internet is polls and never answer them. So all I think this poll shows is that what gender visit this web site and what gender vote in these polls.

my words of wisdom

1.Square meals often make round people.
2.You Cant Argue With Stupitity! Eye for and Eye(and while your at it take 2)

Interesting responses. I am somewhat interested in the remedies and explanations. These are good questions: Are male civers macho and aggressive? Does that attitude detour female civers from the site?

Some explanations: Many female civers simply don't visit civ sites. Female civers just think polls are stupid and don't waste their time answering them.

What can be done to attract this population of players and make the site more enjoyable, flexible and open? It may be difficult to change the behavior or attitude of some male players...then again, maybe there is an answer.

Then why don't you join the Civ Fanatics Ladder??? And challenge someone. Me and SunTzu are in a game right now but there are 3 other players you could challenge.

who really cares os more guys play civ I don't care

I've tried to get females to try CIV, but it just doesn't click with them. I think video games in general are a guy thing. Possibly because of our innate drive to seek out and conquer. IN our modern society, going to a 9-5 everyday just doesn't cut it. We miss the hunter/conquerer aspect of more primitive societies from the past. Civ2 is the next best thing!

I don't think there are any girls around here. I play civilization II online for >2 years and i only met a girl once. And i don't think it was a girl, but a fustrated guy...

If there is a girl playing civII, please reply. I'm pretty sure there will be no replies.

And about those percentages... i think 7% is lying.

You are one of those who lies ;-)

i am most certainly female , born to the gender.
and if you need confirmation
ask slowwhand.
he is my best friend, he can vouch for me.

ok, i believe you now. I just didn't expect that there was female around here.

And ofcourse i'm happy there is at least one girl who plays civ.

Dec 19, 2000, 02:17 PM
btw, how does slowwhand know that you are a girl?

Dec 19, 2000, 11:14 PM
Oh, make no mistake.
Boann is ALL girl.
I've seen every inch, up close and personal, and she is ALL girl.
Jeez, is it hot in here or is it just me?

Dec 20, 2000, 06:57 AM
hmm, the prob is, chix would play a be real forgiving and nice, and get wiped out by barberians coz they didn't wanna be mean and hurt the poor archer, after all, he might not have wanted to join them...

Dec 20, 2000, 07:27 AM
Foolish boy. Boann loves to find uninformed players like you. Makes her job SO much easier.
Oh well live and learn. Or die and learn as the case may be.

Very true Slowwhand, my fiance plays and she calls civ 2 a "stupid game" because she cant destroy everyone on warlord ( currently on her 4th try...ever).

Dec 20, 2000, 07:53 AM
Mike, Mike.
It's cool your fiance plays, but what I'm say is, Boann doesn't play.
Born to battle, she went through rigorous training before even appearing on the scene.
She makes Moors look civilized in their treatment of the enemy.
Last warning, ye best watch out.

ahhh the moors ...nasty creatures..
Braveheart my favorite movie of all time.
and William Wallace my personal hero.

Would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that For one chance
JUST ONE CHANCE to come back here and tell our enemies that you can take our lives, but you can never take our FREEDOM!!!!

Boann draws her sword
swings it overhead slashing through the air
with glee.....and screams..

I understand, but something my fiance needs to learn is...The goverment form does matter after taking over most of the world, so does your economy ( you might be winning but your broke!), Wonders do matter, but when your under attack and losing cities its time to build defense at least, yes libraries are good but when there sold for money check economy (see above).

Well I wasnt suprised by the result of the poll....
I tried to teach a girl chess when I was a little (yeah she was also a little)

I still remeber to that day what happend...

I had just explained how the pieces move on the board and she grabs the king turns it upside down and asks full of wonder....
"Where do you place the batteries?"
Meaning that if they are supposed to move they MUST have batteries somewhere...

I don't think that the poll demonstrates that 93% of Civ players are male. What it demonstrates to me is that 93% of people who like responding to polls AND who play Civ are male.

My wife introduced me to Civ 3 years ago. She was and still is a Civ1 fanatic. I got frustrated with Civ1 fairly quickly and moved onto Civ2 - where I've stayed.

ways to make women answer poles and visit the site:

1. make them have a fluffy pink border

2. get a domain name called and put this site on it. Then when I say visit this site they will.. mind you, so will all this guys

3. create a page for them called "why men are dogs" and hit them with the poll before they can get in. when they vote if it's a female send the to a page saying "because they are" and they'll love you for it.

4. don't let them see this message.

Well i would have to agree with you on this..i don't meet that many girls that are into playing games anyway. The ones that say they are..are really guys..weird ones at that! How many girls have you talked to that get excited about world domination!!

And about those percentages... i think 7% is lying.
