View Full Version : File database helpers thread

Tf suggested this a couple days ago and since one has gotten to work on it I figured that I would post it. Anyways if you don't know already the civfanatics file database (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php) just opened recently (http://forums.civfanatics.com/announcement.php?f=19&a=412) that is where all files are to be new and old. And thats where the problem lies, there are thousands of units that have not been uploaded into the database and they need to be in there. But since there are so many files it's going to take more then just a few people. I myself have done my part and have added 266 units since saturday(Yes I know, I have no life). If people could help out that would be great, so if your a unit maker if you could add your units to the database that would help a lot, but there are still a great many unit makers who have moved on and no longer post here their files have to uploaded as well. So if you want to help just go into the unit forum and find a inactive unit maker whose units haven't been added and post here that your doing that user, but make sure to check that no one else is doing it to avoid overlaps. Also if you manage to upload 150 files then you will be added to the File DB Helpers group (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=4339443&postcount=113)which will give you 80x80 custom avatars(6kb size limit) and allows for 130 PMs.

NOTE: If you would like your files that we have uploaded moved to your profile please PM Plotinus (http://forums.civfanatics.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=37977) and request it.

I myself have done my part and have added 257 units/graphic files since last thursday. I think that If people could help out that would be great. And this new 80x80 avvie is way cooler than the old 70x70 avvie :D

Heres what I've done

So if you want to help just go into the unit forum and find a inactive unit maker whose units haven't been added and post here that your doing that user, but make sure to check that no one else is doing it to avoid overlaps.

What length of time defines "inactive"?

Plotinus
Aug 01, 2006, 03:59 AM
I've put most of my stuff on too.

Please bear in mind that it's not just units that need to be added, but everything. That includes leaderheads, terrain mods, scenarios - the lot. The Civ III section of the database currently has far, far more stuff in it than the Civ II and Civ IV ones put together, but this is mostly units (and, I think, mostly down to aaglo and MarineCorps together). So it's very unbalanced. There are like five scenarios up there right now, and one of those is a unit that's been put in the wrong section. At the very least, someone needs to go through Goldflash's list of LHs and upload the ones by inactive creators.

I'd say that if someone hasn't logged in for six months, their files are fair game for uploading.

Of the known inactive users, Kinboat is probably the one whose work needs to be uploaded most urgently. In my view, anyway.

Indeed, all the graphics, scenarios, maps, modpacs and utilities should be included in the file database - not only units. :)

I've added a couple of Kindred72's units. I was going to add some of aaglo's, but I thought he might want to do it himself.

@MarineCorps - Thanks for adding all of Pleb's units, but all of the ones you added have been redone!

I've added Bebros, and most of mine. (need to get better pics for GRM, and upload my fencer army m-unit)

What length of time defines "inactive"?

I've been rather lose on that but most of the unit makers who have been gone have been gone for a while. ShiroKobbure has only been gone for 10 days but hasn't post in almost a month. Besides TF said that if an inactive user becomes active again he can add the files to their name.

[EDIT]

I knew I should of said something about this. Yes I am aware that LH, modpacks, scen, etc ALL need to be put in the database, however the civ3 units forums is the largest of all the file forums(I just checked to make sure) so thats my biggest concern is getting the hard stuff out of the way first.

Of the known inactive users, Kinboat is probably the one whose work needs to be uploaded most urgently. In my view, anyway.
Yeah. He's got a long list of units. I'll take him if no one else wants him since I did RT who also had a long list....

I've added a couple of Kindred72's units. I was going to add some of aaglo's, but I thought he might want to do it himself.

Yeah aaglo gets himself.:p But keep on adding units!:)

@MarineCorps - Thanks for adding all of Pleb's units, but all of the ones you added have been redone!

Yes by you. Pleb hasn't redone them. Those go under your units.

Bebro's Units that are accessable to the public are completed!

Thanks. You only have 77 files uploaded... I always thought BeBro had done more then 100 units. Must be me.

I'll take care of my units sometime soon.

I really don't like this database though. It seems like a lot of work for creators--be it for units, leaderheads, scenerios, etc. I've been posting units here the same way for years, and I'm set in my ways . . . I fear change . . . Okay, I'm exaggerating. :) Well, we'll see how it goes.

It's easier to do units makers instead. That way we don't have to list all the units that have been posted to avoid overlaps. I suggest adding all of smoking mirriors units.

A few of my units have several editions (ie: Sloop, Trident, Corvette, eventually a few more), only the latest editions of those I consider legit, so, can I get by just putting up the most recent editions, or do you want absolutely everything no-ifs-ands-or-buts?

Okay, all my units are up. It was kind of fun looking back at my humble beginnings in the unit making world. I'm certainly glad that I've improved!

Anyway, I'm having trouble downloading files. I've tried a number of times to download files, but it's only worked once. Normally, a window will open up and display the page for the file again. I work on a mac, using Safari, but I also tried Firefox. Both do the same thing--the one successful attempt was with Firefox. Does anyone else have this problem?

Well, I've done my explaining of things once, I thought that because this is only a file database, I just included also a link to the thread (so people can go there an yap about it - and increase their postcount ;) ). But that was only for the older units. In the future I'm planning on including a bit more information about those units I'll do.

Alright I did a quick check and 3 of his units are in the database but thats it but those were added a while ago so you should be clear to do Kindred.
Doing a quick search, seeing that Odin has already done those 3, I'll let him do it.

So I'll do MoscaTnT's units.

Well, now that I've been "moderated", I'll be keeping an eye out for those miscategorised files that I was moaning about. I've noticed that there are some that are in the right general section (eg, Civ III units) but which seem to me to be in the wrong sub-section (eg, in ancient units when they should be in fantasy units). I'll move those too, but I'll leave a comment saying it's been moved. If you think it should be moved back then let me know. Also, if anyone spots a file in the wrong place that hasn't yet been moved, let me know and I'll move it.

recently , Thunderfall opened up a File Database, which is a huge library for Civ 2, 3, and 4. We need all the files of everyone in there, unfortunately, some members are inactive, so other people took the liberty of adding their units/maps/graphics/etc. , so, what I'm asking is, mind if I add your leaderheads + units? :)

Please, do that to me :)

It was about a bit retarded guy who mowed the lawns of people - and a guy was developing a computer-game do increase intelligence, and this lawnmower-guy became his guinea-pig (strangely named animal, since they are not from guinea, nor they are pigs). Eventually that guy uploaded himself to become completely digital... or something like that.

... guinea-pig (strangely named animal, since they are not from guinea, nor they are pigs). ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_pig#Name

The animal's name carries connotations of it being a pig in many languages other than English; the German word for them is Meerschweinchen, literally "little sea pigs" (sailing ships stopping to reprovision in the New World would pick up stores of guinea pigs, which provided an easily transportable source of fresh meat), the Russian and Polish word for them (morskaya svinka (Морская свинка) and świnka morska respectively) is similar in meaning. The Welsh term is mochyn cwta ('little pig'), the French Cochon d'Inde (Indian pig); the Dutch used to call it guinees biggetje (Guinean piglet), and in Scandinavia they are called marsvin (a combination of the Latin word mare for ocean, and Norwegian/Swedish/Danish svin which means pig). In Greek they are called indika xoiridia (ινδικά χοιρίδια, Small Indian Pigs), and in Portuguese porquinho da Índia ("little pig of India"). In Italian the term is either Porcellino d'India (Little Indian Pig) or Cavia Peruviana (Peruvian Cavy). This is not universal; for example, the common Spanish word is conejillo de Indias (Indian bunny rabbit / Indies bunny).

The scientific name of a common species is Cavia porcellus, with porcellus being Latin for "little pig".

The origin of "guinea" in "guinea pig" is even harder to explain. According to the etymology of the entry for "guinea pig" in The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, the term guinea pig is "Perhaps [an] alteration (influenced by Guinea, used as a name for any faraway unknown country), of Guiana".[2] One theory is that the animals were brought to Europe by way of Guinea, leading people to think they had originated there. Another theory suggests that "Guinea" in the case of the guinea pig is a corruption of "Guiana", an area in South America. A common misconception is that they were so named because they were sold as the closest thing to a pig one could get for a guinea (an old British coin with a value of 21 shillings, or 1.05 GBP in modern decimal currency). However, evidence does not support this conjecture: for example, the Dutch name refers to the country of Guinea rather than the British coin, and the first guinea pig was described in 1554 by the Swiss naturalist Konrad Gesner more than a hundred years before the first guinea was struck.

BTW, it appears that Guinea Pigs can get scurvy. Aargh!

The wikipedia article doesn`t explain anything! Its still weird! We call it the "Little sea pigs" here too, but only officialy, they have another common name "Zamorac" which doesn`t really mean anything, except it has a familiar sound with the word "more" - sea. Cute little buggers :D

I wonder why they didn`t call them scury dogs then :hmm:

I know that this thread is about putting units in the database, but I had a small question about adding my leaderheads. I put them all in multiple folders to save having to wait for ftp access. Since there's only one download link for each leaderhead in the database, I don't really want to have to combine all the folders, ask for ftp access, and reupload all the files. Should I just put the first file in the download link and put a link to the original thread, or is there a better method? Or should I combine them all into one folder and get the ftp access?

I've included a thumbnail in all the leaderheads I've uploaded. Makes the leaderheads more user-friendly, in terms that they get a preview of what they are getting. :)

I had no idea you were still around. Oh well no big deal I can delete it.:D
Still around? I've been around always since the day I joined! (except for the last week where I was on vacation, hence the late reply;))
