Orders away. Pretty short, but serviceable. I have no problem clearing up any confusion or answering any question. I'm in my element now :p Also, I've done some philosophizing in INES which I will shameless repost here (not the play, but the philosophy part). It was going to be a basis for religious ponderings in INES, but I'm going to effectively kill that there as its unlikely to succeed anyway. Also, I'll add purely original stuff as I go.

Excerpt, Book 2 of Phidias' Eugenidean Discourses on the Nature of the Divine

Adeimantus: No, Eugenides, if you were to ask any man in the city, he would say I am the most learned in the ways of the divine and if he did not, you would not be speaking to a well educated man.

Eugenides: Delightful Adeimantus! If that is the case, I will learn from you if I can. Explain again, noble Teacher, what exactly you mean when you say “holy.”

Adeimantus: Quite obviously, Eugenides, “holy” is that which is approved by the gods.

Eugenides: Approved by which gods Adeimantus? For surely the Poet[1] tells us of many conflicts among gods, where each desires a thing wholly unto himself, and yet contradictory to the wishes of the other gods. Who, therefore, determines the holiness of a deed?

Adeimantus: Why, Eugenides, in these cases of discord amongst the gods, quite obviously the deed is neither good, nor bad, nor holy, nor unholy. Holiness depends on the agreement of all gods, for if an action were holy, no god should oppose it.

Eugenides: Adeimantus, your intellect far surpasses mine. Therefore I shall continue to probe you on this issue, if you will allow me.

Adeimantus: Of course.

Eugenides: According to you, then, that which all the gods agree upon is what is thought to be holy among the populace?

Adeimantus: Yes.

Eugenides: And there is no other way for an action to be deemed holy than by the ordinance of the gods?

Adeimantus: Why, of course, Eugenides, that is the very definition of holiness-as-such!

Eugenides: Thus, holiness-as-such is derived solely from the gods?

Adeimantus: This is true.

Eugenides: And no other place?

Adeimantus: None.

Eugenides: How, then, do the gods use holiness-as-such as a guideline for agreement when holiness comes from that very agreement?

Adeimantus: Well, you see, the gods have an understanding of the holiness of an action.

Eugenides: Indeed? How so?

Adeimantus: By their perfect understanding as befits their positions as divines.

Eugenides: But, Adeimantus, my friend, if they have a perfect understanding, why do they disagree on some subjects, agree on other subjects, and leave still other subjects completely alone? And if, as we said before, holiness is already perfectly understood by gods, how can its definition be agreement among gods?

Adeimantus: The gods have differing points of view, necessarily, given their separate stations.

Eugenides: And yet they all share the same perfect understanding?

Adeimantus: Of course.

Eugenides: Why then would they not agree on all issues?

Adeimantus: Again, Eugenides, their separation of interests prohibits them from doing so.

Eugenides: But, don’t you see Adeimantus, by your very own reasoning, the gods must either not have a perfect understanding of all things and therefore lack divinity and exist merely as powerful beings, or else they are endowed with a perfect understanding and as such agree on all things. Yet this contradicts not only yourself, but the Poet Himself, and again, the idea of the separation stations of the divines. So either our entire concept of the gods is incorrect, or else they are not gods at all and we must look still higher to find true divine beings.

Adeimantus: Eugenides! What then would you propose, if you are to destroy all our gods and take away the statements of the Poet?

Eugenides: But I am the unlearned one, Adeimantus, would you deign to hear my thoughts on your area of expertise?

Adeimantus: Enlighten me with your theory.

Eugenides: Very well, by your leave. As it has been shown, either our gods are not the gods described by the Poet and the ones we believe them to be, or else they are not gods and merely powerful entities who rule over we mortals, or else they do not exist at all and are mere distortions of the True Deity above. For my part, I have yet to see evidence that the second option could be true. As for the others, if our gods are not the gods we have read about, surely they would follow logic and therefore we could reason some basic ideas about them through discussion.

Adeimantus: Perhaps. Continue.

Eugenides: Again, with your leave, I shall continue constructing this image of the divine. Think for a moment, Adeimantus. Which system would work most effectively, result in the least disagreement amongst immortals, and require the least amount of deliberation among the rulers – having but one god or having many?

Adeimantus: Necessarily having one god.

Eugenides: And therefore would you say that if our gods turn out to be false, that it is most likely one god that will take their place?

Adeimantus: Perhaps. It would appear so.

Eugenides: It would appear so because it is so! Look at this! Even in the writings of the Poet, we find that all the gods can trace themselves back to one god, when he says “And Ares towered above the field of battle / bloody and ruthless, greatest honoured in battle of all the descendants of Autogenes[2].” His name gives us all the information we must know, Adeimantus. How likely do you suppose it could be that, after Autogenes revealed himself to mortals, we ran away, using the imaginative minds he gave us, and created an entire body of stories simply because they are pleasing to hear at feasts or to recite in the symposium in order to impress our friends?

[1]Gerides: Old One or Son of the Old One, first poet and "historian" of the Gerougioikoi; said to have composed the first poem, the "Telomneid", the epic saga of the journey of the first Gerougioikos, Telomnemes ("The Man With a Goal in Mind" or "He Who Keeps in Mind the End"), from the dying lands of Telliogia.
[2]Autogenes: Self-Created, Self-Creator, Creator of Selves, etc

OOC: Another excert coming shortly... handwritten, have to type it.

End of Exile

"I am the greatest defender of the Republic. The fact that I suspended republican government only ensured that it would survive. In the future, were it necessary, I would encourage any Stratikrator to do the same as I. But I would, in a heartbeat, kill any Stratikrator who tried to take power for his own personal benefit."

-Stratikrator Strategius, On War (fragments)

"The people are only most dangerous to themselves."

"Then let them be, for it is their choice to make, for good or for ill."

-The Dominian Discourses, 907 P.D.

Part One:

Ialios held the bird in his hands. The animal was beautiful, and well trained. His wings, brown and neatly bound, were folded at its sides. And despite the black hood covering its avian face, the animal knew from the touches of its master that it would be free again soon. So it didn't scratch, or cry out. It was a loyal servant. Its time was coming.

"There, my friend." Ialios finished tying the scroll. As he bent down to melt the sealing wax, a familiar pain lanced through his side. The rewards of war, he reflected. In those hellish days before they had captured this place, so many died.

Even he, the falconmaster, was caught up in the press of men running for the gates. Someone yelled, and they all yelled. The rain began to fall, and the arrows hissed down with them. Splintering wood, and screams, cheers, banners rising, falling. They moved through in the shadow of the ramids, even as the ballistae opened fire. One fell before him, the great beast in anguish, writhing in the rain that fell that night...and then came the fires.

He blinked, blurring out the pain and the memories. Choking down a groan of pain, he ignored the wound and quickly tied the scroll to the bird's leg. Everything was ready.

An orderly appeared, one who's face he didn't know. Perhaps a man from Norvalin, or another division. But he seemed to know Ialios by sight. "Falconmaster," he acknowledged, and saluted. "The Stratikrator's summons. I believe, sir, that it is his time." Nodding with recognition, the aging bird trainer rose to his feet. "He is at the same place?"

"Yes, those plant houses. He finds some peace among the trees."

He had never seen Vandrios lying down before. The great general was always on a horse, or with his troops, or officers, rarely even sitting to eat with the commanders. But it was coming to an end for the aged warrior.

Ialios knelt. "My lord, I am yours."

Vandrios opened his eyes. They were blue, and piercing. Though the body was destroyed, the man knew, within lay the keen mind of a young soldier. The Stratikrator lifted his head a fraction of an inch.

"Ialios, that is your name. Your service has not gone unnoticed. Therefore, I relieve you of your duties upon your return to New Veritas, with the honorable benefit accorded to any soldier who has served his two decades, on one condition."

Ialios was shocked that the commander of the Legioni had even heard of him. "Anything on Tellus that is mine to give, sire."

"Please, entrust this message...to your finest bird. High Elder Palerian must read it. He shall understand."

"It will be done."

They both fell silent, for a few moments. They were vastly different men, but both had shared the horrible experiences of that day. Of that fighting, that slaughter. Of the children that died. Such carnage... The wind blew through the trees, and the patterns of light and shade shifted subtly. A scent of orange filled the air. These terraces truly were quite beautiful, Ialios reflected. It was good that the Fei had built them.

"The work..."

"My lord?"

"Of the One. It is...His greatest triumph."

"Tellus?"

"All of it. The truth is everywhere, even here...a shame...far from Eldan...dying generals always...read..."

The Stratikrator was becoming delirious, Ialios thought. Perhaps this was the best time to leave. He could rest until the end came.

"Gregorian."

He heard no more. The medical orderlies were gathering even as he left. But the falconer knew death in his birds. The falcons accepted the inevitable call with absolute tranquility, servants until the end. It was that exact same expression that he had seen on the face of Stratikrator Vandrios.

He quickly secured the second, smaller scroll to the first, and lifted the mask off of the bird, unbinding its wings. The black eyes gazed back at him, like dark, silent pools of water. It awaited the orders of its master. Holding his arm up into the air, he spoke to the bird as he spoke to all others.

"You are a noble falcon, earthly brother to the mighty phoenix. Bear this message as the One bore you into the world. For purpose, honor, and glory."

Beating its wings, the bird rose into the air. With a cry of expectation and joy, the bird savored its freedom. Though it could go anywhere, bound only by the sky, it would return to Redemption, somehow.

"The White Mountains are indeed a challenge, my friend," Ialios whispered as the falcon vanished from view. "Our hopes depend on your wings, now."

Excerpt, Book 2 of Phidias' Eugenidean Discourses on the Nature of the Divine
Eugenides: Lets us now further investigate the nature of the divine. It is impossible, as we have already discussed, for there to exist more than one god, due to the nature of the will of the divine and the definition of the Good. However, we have not satisfactorily answered the question of whether there exists a god at all.

Adeimantus: Indeed, how are we to know?

Eugenides: Let us establish that the divine must be perfect.

Adeimantus: It is established.

Eugenides: Let us not jump to conclusions, but, like a builder who ensures that his foundation is sturdy, let us make sure our premises will stand.

Adeimantus: We must take no other course, it is certain.

Eugenides: A necessary precondition of the perfection of an entity is, of course, the existence of the entity, or else the entity would not, in fact, be perfect, correct? Whether the entity resides in this world or some other world is not in question, for surely the square exists on a higher plane, yet is only represented on this plane[1]. In addition, We consider existence to be a positive and therefore its opposite negative and thus a flaw. The perfect entity is flawless by definition. Also, lacking a perfect entity, we would have no way in which to compare flaws and virtues in any meaningful way, or have a standard by which we may call something “not perfect.”

Adeimantus: I think I follow you.

Eugenides: In addition, something perfect would necessarily be unchanging, as change is the result of an imperfect state of being, whereas there can be no variation from that which is already perfect. It is also necessary for the first being in existence to be perfect, and therefore, as we shall proceed to demonstrate, for it to have always existed.

Adeimantus: For what reason?

Eugenides: Is it possible for an imperfect being to evolve into something perfect without an outside impetus?

Adeimantus: What do you mean?

Eugenides: Is it not necessary for an imperfect being to be assisted by a perfect being before it is able to attain perfection?

Adeimantus: We are saying that perfection cannot come from imperfection, spontaneously?

Eugenides: Yes.

Adeimantus: Then yes, this is true.

Eugenides: Therefore, the first being would have had to be perfect for perfection to exist. Any being that was not perfect could not have been the first being, as attaining perfection would have required some outside impetus or standard, which must then be derived from something higher than itself, which would itself then be the supreme being, therefore requiring us to look above this lesser entity, knowing not to be divine (as the divine will is a single unity, as has been demonstrated) and therefore not worthy of our worship.

Adeimantus: What of reports of the Divine manifesting itself in many and various ways? If the Divine is perfect, he would have no impetus to change as we have said. Or is this belief erroneous?

Eugenides: Ah! A valid point, my friend. There must exist an explanation and we shall endeavour to find it. Surely, if men were perfect, there would be no great variation among the people (indeed, no variation whatsoever!), and yet, are there not men from Kallipolis, Epidamnos, Manatea, Elis, among the city states, and countless others among the barbarians? Therefore, the Divine would, in his perfect kindness, appear toe ach man as would benefit the individual the most. Is this, like the hull of a well-made ship, sturdy and self-supporting, or else is it flawed and doom to sink under its own weight?

Adeimantus: Surely it is like the first ship and has been well-crafted by the expert craftsman[2]!

Eugenides: Quite the clever phrase! And now, shall we cease here? Has our question been fully answered?

Adeimantus: Heavens no, Eugenides, we must follow through. You, as our guide, cannot turn back and leave me to wander in the Etnoi Mountains! [3]

Eugenides: I will be no Medon, leaving his troop to their fate. We will press ahead! Pick the path before us!

Adeimantus: Let us inquire further into the nature of perfection – does the God have both perfect kindness and perfect malice?

Eugenides: A capital question! And yet deceptively easy! The God, as the perfect entity, does indeed function as the source of all virtue and, as a part of his perfect character, has, as attributes, all the virtues. Vices, however, are not attributable to the Divine. Surely it is foolishness to name something “perfect malice.” However, for the sake of discussion and in the hope of vanquishing wrong though, we shall address the issue. As we have said, perfection preceded imperfection by necessity. Does it not then follow that imperfection is a perverted form of perfection?

Adeimantus: How so?

Eugenides: Let us take a virtue, examine it, and then pervert it so as to follow its progress from virtue to vice. What virtue shall we select?

Adeimantus: Surely, courage in defense of one’s family is the most honourable and least susceptible to a fall from grace.

Eugenides: Perhaps, we shall see. Let us take a man who is courageous in defending his family. He guards against every attempt to harm them and does his best to keep away evils. But what if, in the course of protecting his family, he begins to see that there are many things that could be both harmful and beneficial, depending on the results. For instance, if he allowed a man to court his daughter, surely things could turn out well if the man proves to be a man of moral character. However, if he is a vice-ridden man, the father could be selling his daughter into slavery! He therefore decides that his daughter is too precious to him to risk losing in such a manner and turns all suitors away from her. In his increasing paranoia, he begins to view more and more things as threats to his family and after a period of time, his defense becomes more offensive in nature and his courage has turned to fear-driven wrath, for, instead of trusting that the God would see the situation work out for the best with his cooperation, he tried to take all things under his control.

Adeimantus: This is a very good example. It is certain that all vices are perversions of virtue.

NOTES:
General Note: Book 3 takes a decidedly different tone from the first two books, as it becomes more and more apparent that Eugenides is taking the lead in the discussion. He has already demonstrated sufficiently to Adeimantus that Adeimantus was incorrect in his beliefs about the gods and no longer pretends as if Adeimantus is an expert on the subject.
[1]For a more complete discussion of Eugenides' beliefs on dimensions and realms, see Forms and Thoughts
[2]A play on the name "Eugenides" meaning, variously, "The Well Made One", the "Good Maker/Creator", the "Son of the Well Made One", "Son of the Good Maker/Creator", "(Son of the) Skilled Craftsman", etc.
[3]Medon was a mythic commander of forces fighting the barbarians and abandoned his troops when they became bogged down fighting in the mountains.

OOC: Last time-Establishment of monotheism, this time-establishment of the existence of God and the nature of vice and virtue, next time-more on vice and virtue and a return to the discussion on the multiple manifestations of the Divine.

End of Exile

"The Veritasan mentality is something that defies understanding for a non-Valin. It is proud, dedicated, far-sighted, and stubborn to the death. It is often foolish, or idealistic, but is driven by a passion for victory unequaled among others, and sharpened by defeat."

-Julianus Christia, Cultures of Tellus, 3441 P.D.

Part Two:

Telerios always woke before dawn. He believed that, since the One went to all the trouble to put that great flaming ball in the sky, it was the least a man could do to give thanks for its rising. So instinctively his eyes snapped open in the pre-dawn twilight. He washed his face, combed his beard, and shrugged on a light cloak and tunic. Then he left the two rooms where his wife, children, and parents still slept.

Before he left, Telerios passed his hands over the Valin symbol for "welcome" etched into the door of his home. He had carved it into the door on both sides, because he understood that people should feel as welcome going out into the One's world as they should coming into his humble home, if not more. Calling for his goats, he soon found them grazing halfway down the hill, the kids still sleeping in their mothers' fur. Then he strode out, staff in hand, to lead his flock to the stream.

It was getting colder, he saw. A light dusting of snow had fallen in the night, and it would coat the hillsides before the sun transmuted it into glistening dew. The waters of the stream would be cold, fed from the great glaciers that never melted, high up where no man but the Kildari* went. He gazed up in admiration at the peaks, those white sentinels that protected New Veritas from the barbarians in the jungles to the south.

They soon reached the stream, which was small, swift, and freezing as he expected. After checking to make sure that no wolves were in the valley, he motioned the goats forward, who bleated happily as they drank the fresh water. Filling his canteen, he sighed with contentment as the chilling water filled his throat. The stream passed between two long thin stones shaped like obelisks. He often wondered about those stones, which seemed to him to look like ancient, worn statues.

As sunlight began to filter into the valley, he looked downstream, where the path of the brook fell over several small waterfalls and a ravine, before joining a river that led towards the ocean. Far below on the grasslands, he saw soldiers starting their morning patrols from the guardtower. As the faint strains of the military trumpets echoed up the valley, Telerios silently thanked the men for protecting his home. Several months ago, a small party of Sintonian raiders, perhaps half a hundred mounted men, rode across the plain to raid the villages of the foothills. He and all the other farmers marched to join the Militia, and in a hard fought battle with the local garrison, they managed to turn back the enemy. But seven men were killed, men he had known his whole life.

Telerios knew that they looked down upon him from Paradise now, smiling with joy, from the reward given to them for defending the One's Children. And one day, he hoped, he too would join them.

A few more slanting rays of light soon escaped into the valley. Yes, the sun was rising again, as it should, and would forever and ever, until the end of Time when the One came in glory to judge all Men. But as he squinted into the golden ball, something caught his eye. Small, and black, or maybe brown, it just barely cleared the last peak of the mountain range.

And now it was falling, spiraling downward. Was it...a bird, perhaps? Yes, and it was definitely falling, now almost directly towards him. Telerios wondered if it could be a mountain eagle, driven from its home by a sudden storm. But no...as the bird lost all control over its flight and sank downwards into the valley, he realized that it was a messenger falcon.

Quickly hurrying forward, he reached the fallen bird only seconds after it landed into a clump of lichens with a muffled thud. Approaching tentatively, he saw the reason for the crash. A barbed arrow was lodged in the left wing...one with a bronze tip, he saw, so probably not Valin. And any trip across the White Mountains, especially with that wound, would have sapped the energy of even the most dedicated messenger falcon.

He picked up the bird in his arms, which had clearly lost consciousness. A shame that this had happened...but there was still time to save it, perhaps. He looked for the message on the leg, and found two scrolls. One bore the large, blue seal of the Legioni. But the second, smaller scroll, (and at this Telerios' eyes widened in surprise,) bore the purple seal of the Stratikrator.

The simple farmer soon realized that the bird in his hands, and the messages it carried, were far more important than his life, and everything he had ever known. He immediately called his goats, who looked surprised that their master would be leading them back so soon. Telerios would definitely make a trip down into the grasslands today.

End of Exile

"I have decided to go away for a time, since we are now unworthy. I pray deeply and honestly that when our people return, they will have become purer, harder, and wiser."

-Last words of the Prophet Pacian in Veritas

Part Three:

He crouched behind a ruined column. Since the enemy had taken the city, too much of it was ruined. But that would be changed. He would see this city rebuilt by the time he died, if he had to pile stone on stone himself. Anger, and passionate thoughts ran through his head...but then he stopped himself. This was no time to think, only to carry out orders.

They were coming. A small pebble fell, probably disturbed by some small animal. It was cold, and there was only a thin sliver of moon...that was better, for him at least. Yes, they were definitely coming. It was a small group of them, walking together. "Kill two," he whispered to himself, "and let one escape. That is the way."

He drew his arrow, and aimed silently. Hopefully they would come right past that column...yes, it was true. There were four of them. Their armor was truly quite nice, but the enemy's culture placed high emphasis on that sort of thing. How the metal scales overlapped and linked was very nice. If only he could have armor like that...but mobility and silence were his friends. And no armor would stop a Veritasan barbed arrow, not at this range at least.

Perfect. They were stopping to talk. Perhaps he could try...yes, two arrows at once. Drawing a second, he drew back the bowstring. Hopefully these first shots would hit the face, or the neck...the men seemed inexperienced, but many of the troops the enemy sent in were young. There was no time to reflect on the identity of his enemy; that was too dangerous.

He fired, without warning. There was a scream, and someone shouted orders. Yes, one was down, and the other had an arrow in the shoulder. They were dragging their comrade off to the side...no, we couldn't have that. He brought down the wounded man, and then shot the commander, who was carrying the one he'd probably killed. And yes, the breastplate was punctured, but the man pulled out the shaft, and...damn! His position was spotted, and the two men were coming towards him. He loosed another shaft, and ran, just barely escaping a throwing dagger.

He ran for his life, into the cold. It shouldn't be this cold in spring, he reflected. Yes, they would not follow. Their comrade was on the brink of death, and they would need to get him to safety.

Lost in thought over his next move, he almost ran into a man lurking in the shadows. Both men drew their weapons, but relaxed, when they saw that each was an ally. Though they knew no names, the first man knew that the second was higher than him. The second man smiled. "My friend, we now know his name."

"Yes, tell me, what is it?"

"His name is Xenophon. Now come, there may be a boat arriving."

"A...boat?"

"Yes. Haven't you realized that now is the time?"

---

High Elder Palerian stared at the servant. "From the Stratikrator, you are sure?"

The servant bowed. "Yes, my liege, the unbroken seal of Stratikrator Vandrios was found on the bird."

"And the falcon, has it been taken care of?"

"Yes, it appeared to be near death, but our finest falconmasters are tending to it now."

"See to it that the bird does not die. You may go."

"Aye, my liege."

The servant bowed, and withdrew. Palerian sighed. He hadn't been virtually handpicked by Vandrios for this job just to have people bow and compliment him. He sliced the wax with a silver knife, and unrolled the scroll.

My friend, it read,

I am going away for a time. Guangzhong took all of my strength, but the city is ours. The men are tired, though, and cannot take much more of it. The Legioni dispatch will tell you of our agreement to Saenium, and the plans I have given to the commanders. I will not see Redemption again. But my friend, there is another thing. As the city burned, I made my way to the library, as you had encouraged me to do. And as we suspected...something was there. Some garbled fragment, but still there. Very little I could discipher, only what we knew..."He will come carrying a spear in his right hand, and a tree in his left." But more than the one in Kallamas exists. It can still be found. I leave you with this knowledge, for even if you nor I can attain the truth, one day the equal to Strategius will. We must preserve this knowledge, until that day comes.

-Vandrios

Palerian looked down at his hands. They were trembling. Yes, it was time.

"Summon Thanatos," he called to an orderly. "And the generals of the Legioni, and the Norvalin armies. And summon Exilsium's troops. Summon everyone! I must speak to them."

Ah yes, the Statues again... I eagerly await to see what comes of this.

So many unanswered mysteries in this NES. What exactly happened in the Halls of the Assemblum in 777, what secrets hide within the tomb of Strategius?

I have a few secrets of my own...

One I will divulge now is the name of the update.

Striking at Iron
“As always, peace has triumphed, but for how long is up for grabs. After all, wise men prepare for war in times of peace.” –Li Xiang, Duke of Qingdao

The fires that had burned behind him as his squad retreated towards the river had long went out. The people of the city had barely managed to evacuate in time fleeing across the Fei River. By the Emperor’s order, they had stayed along with 4000 other soldiers with the militia having been dispersed by Imperial decree. It was their finest hour. They had cut down Valins by the hundreds as they swarmed across the citadel.

The Palace artworks and other priceless items and literature had been the first things to have been taken away, long before the Valin army was within a week’s march from Guanzhong. They had swarmed but the line held, it had held for many a charge as the disciplined forces of the Valins had clashed with the finest of Guangfei. Inspired by the great edifice they had been defending as well as the knowledge that each minute they won another would flee to safety was awe-inspiring.

They had held, and when not a single of their companions still stood, they retreated. There had been enough time Guangfei’s river fleet was still supreme. And the Valins had not followed, perhaps out of fear of the rumors and legends. Of men who did not die without bringing many mortal souls with them. It was either that or the figure with the purple cape. Vandrios perhaps? It didn’t matter, his objective had been accomplished. Guanzhong had fallen, but in the end it had been nothing but a city.

The people, the art, the literature were the things that had made Guanzhong the center of Guangfei. They survived and would return in time and Guanzhong would prosper once more. In the end, Guanzhong was nothing but an edifice, a symbol. And when it fell, it had sent shockwaves throughout the Empire. It was a rallying call, a symbol in which the massive population of Guangfei could encircle and they did. One of the largest army to have ever graced the earth had been amassed.

He had no regrets, after over 20 years of service to the Dragon Throne. The 5th son of an insignificant landowner near Guangzhou, he would have had to be very lucky to have the life he had now. The call had gone out over 20 years ago, for volunteers to join the Imperial Guard, to serve as the mail fist of the Emperor. He had gone, and it had changed his life forever. He was a man that people respected, a man that people had come to pin their hopes and dreams on.

And as he approached the tent, there was none the less a small trace of fear. It was the fear of a small 7 year old boy as he had left his home all those years ago to begin his training which was anything but soft. It had been hard, and in those years he scarcely remembered a day in which he had been fully satisfied with the food given to them. But it had long ironed his resolve and mind for the task at hand. He stepped into the tent and entered the light.

“Your Grace, His Imperial Majesty has signed the Treaty of Saenium with New Veritas. Peace, however tentatively has returned. On behalf of His Majesty, Emperor Ku and the Duke of Qingdao, Li Xiang Keeper of the State documents would like to offer their most heart felt congratulations Count-General, your distinguished services in Qingdao and later in the Trinlin campaigns have brought victory and peace to Guangfei.”

The legendary Count-General Fei Shala, a man who had yet to lose one battle in his long nigh one century years of life. From the plains of Qingdao to the lush forests of Shangei, against the well disciplined hosts of Veritas to the rabble armies of Trinlin, he had triumphed. Slowly, methodical, he had won despite all. Yet his fame did not spread, a quiet man he was by nature, believing greatly in the order of things.

“His Majesty, and the Honorable Duke, Colonel, can say what they wish about peace. I trust the Valins as much as there are loyal Valfei within the Empire. I shall be ready, for any betrayal or breaking of the Treaty as you may tell His Imperial Majesty and His Grace. My army stands ready to defend Guangfei sovereignty and honor as it has for over 80 years. May the Heavens bless us if they wish, with peace..”

With a bow, he whisked off bearing the message, with a tinge of apprehension The possibility of peace if the Valins did not go back on their word. He quashed it the instant it came up, it was no longer in the hands of men. But in fate.

Update 23- Years 1535- 1590: Phoenix Resurgent

On a distant, uncharted archipelago named Yathanai, the nation of Yathai is rising. Founded by Viski Lasi, a Gorimari who got lost at sea and arrived on a primitive island and was viewed as a god by the locals, the nation, powered by zealous energy, has spread rapidly throughout the islands.

The naval nation of Ida’an’i’i has collapsed! After over a century of weak government, the stage was perfectly set for several opportunistic island lords to declare their independence. This set off a chain reaction of more fragmentation and soon after, war. All central authority was destroyed with the sacking of Ol’o by one southern lord, and all order followed.
(-Ida’an’i’i)

The Tsayan war seemed to be drawing to an end. Kelios outnumbered the defenders 2 to 1, and the Aithean rebels (who were offered independence for allegiance by both sides) chose to fight against their occupiers. To top it off, barbarians from the west were continuing their advances into Tsaya.

King Semas, apparently realizing just how small his chances were, decided to make a desperate attack on Kelios. Possibly out of simple vengeance, to bring down his enemy with him, or to force a peace treaty.

Minimal troops were left in the Aithean homelands, which soon fell to the overwhelming invaders.

Then, a force of over 1500 Tsayans crossed the mountains north of Aldisir. Before Kelios could react and muster an army sufficient to defeat these invaders (The majority of their forces being preoccupied at the time), the city was seized and ravaged.
(-Aldisir)

While Kelios’ troops scrambled to beat back these invaders, a second Tsayan attack struck on the coast. Another force, similar in size to the last, began racing for Keliosir. It decimated several tiny forces headed eastwards (towards Aldisir) before running into a large army outside of the capital.

Thus was the Battle of Keliosir fought. Both sides were desperate, in their own ways. Kelios fielded a larger force, but Tsaya’s was better trained.

Thousands died in the brutal melee, but in the end Kelios’ numbers narrowly defeated the invaders.
(-1350 Tsayan Spearmen, -200 Archers, -1000 Kelios Axemen, -1000 Kelios Spearmen)

From this point on, things only went downhill for Tsaya. Kelios drove them out of the ruins of Aldisir, and took their capital after a difficult, several-year siege, destroying the city to avenge the destruction of the second city of Kelios. Aithean rebels and barbarians took the east.

The last surviving Tsayan General, Zerex (the general at Aldisir) fled with his few remaining soldiers and several thousand civilians back into the north, where the Tsayans had emerged from several centuries earlier, rejoining their barbarian bretheren.

The fleet of Tsaya fled to former Ida’an’i’i, becoming just another faction in the chaotic warfare.
(-Tsaya, -500 Kelios Spearmen, -1500 Kelios Axemen)

As Tsaya fell, another war broke out. The barbarians who had fought Tsaya turned around and attacked the Aitheans. Unsuspecting and outnumbered, the disorganized rebels were quickly conquered. The barbarian leader declared the formation of the Syracian Empire, and established a capital, naming it Jara, after himself.
(+Syracia)

Sanx has, under the growing influence of Kelios, begun to form into a more urban culture.

Little else happens in the rest of the Divotheist states.

Adar does little, other than holding its position against the New Eldists in the Azulian colony.

Great events are taking place in the Oneist States of the North.

Once again, war has been averted between Norvalin and Arcadia/Union of Ardan. Land and money were conceded by Norvalin. Then, the UoA made a 180 degree turn and attacked Nontin. Somewhere in the declaration of war was a reason (Most believe it had something to do with espionage, plotting… or something sneaky like that) but it was generally not regarded very seriously.

What was regarded seriously was a force of over 10 000 under the command of the Ardanese Stratikrator Generals (Stratikrator? Moniel?) Jarn Atrex and Tare.

The invasion came from both the north and south. Tinatopia was easily taken, and it was discovered that the government had already moved to Cuastia. A large group of collaborators, known as the Caez, came to aid the invaders. Their reasons were varied, most common were a dream to unite Pirian Oneism, some disliked their own government for its recent mass-conscription, and others still were simply opportunistic power-seekers.

All of Nontin save the new capital fell. The city was surrounded, and the Ardanese fleet destroyed that of Nontin. Almeno Jacues realized that his people would starve eventually. Every day, his situation would get worse. So he prepared for the final glorious stand of the Nontin. He dismissed those who did not believe in fighting for their country, keeping only the most loyal of his men and women. Then, he charged out towards Jarn Atrex’ troops.

The two sides did battle, then Jacues began a retreat back to the walls of Cuastia, drawing Atrex into the range of his defensive siege weaponry and archers. All of the Ardanese thousands now closed in. Many fell before breaking through the gates, and many more fell in the buildings and streets. The Nontin continually fought a retreat, until at last they were surrounded in the partially-constructed governmental complex. His men fought and died, Jacues himself being the last.

The Ardanese flag was raised over the captured city. Nontin was no more. But the cost was much higher than anticipated.
(-10 Ardanese Sloops, -1000 Ardanese Spearmen, -4000 Ardanese Katiahn, -12 000 Urban Militia, -Nontin)

Norvalin, despite avoiding war, is no more. After centuries of separation, they have joined together to form the Valin Republic of Veritas. Much happens with this Union, but I will get to that later.

Exilsium has done little of major note lately, other than finally connecting its cities by road, a major achievement for any Valin nation (who apparently have a manic fear and distrust of major roads :p).

However, this inactivity was soon going to change…

Gamorrea’s development is continuing rapidly. The nation is beginning to civilize. It retains the best aspects of barbarian horsemen and civilized farmers and merchants. Relations with the Citadel and Orum were both improving. In fact, the newest High Priest, Dazra Karatu, was generally considered to be more of a philosopher than a king.

Normally this is good. But normally, Ikki doesn’t invade you.

The justification was that when hunting Malkavians, Gamorrean soldiers had invaded Ikki’s territory and slain several Ikki men.

Karatu immediately protested these allegations, claiming that:
A) This simply hadn’t happened.
B) There had been no military hunting down rogue Malkavians for decades.
C) That’s a pretty pathetic Cassus Belli anyway, even if everything Ikki says is true.

No response came from Ikki, and ten thousand troops entered Gamorrean territory. Karatu prepared his armies.

The Ikki quickly captured Barakuir, and declared the formation of a new Malkavian state. A bit belated, as the previous High Priest Dazra Kazumi had just finished stamping out their religion. However, a few thousand Malkavians rallied to the cause.

Fortifications were prepared, and the small region around Barakuir was secured. Scouts were set up all around to detect intruders.

The first intruders were the Gamorrean Northern Army, recalled from campaigning in the north. A strong defense repelled the attack. But the Gamorreans still had massive manpower on their hands.

So the war fell into a pattern. Ikki defended, Gamorrea raided, fired flaming arrows over the Lunx (Dava) River, and sent in assasins to terrify or kill Ikki soldiers and Malkavians at night.

There has still not been a decisive confrontation. But the Ikki occupation of Barakuir continues.
(-1000 Ikki Sohei, -1500 Gamorrean Horse Archers)

In the far north, Croyodon, Merhai, Fairhelt and Orum have both been quite peaceful, for the most part just expanding their borders.

The Citadel of Knowledge continues on as always, spreading peace and knowledge.

As the societies of Khemri and Gorin continue developing, a small number of people in those countries are converting to New Eldism. Interestingly, Exilsium is growing a following as well.

Gorin’s society has entered a period of changes. The previously fairly benign and peaceful religion of Masra is beginning to form into more of an aggressive, convert-based religion.

Also, the views of its population are beginning to change from ‘family-oriented’ to ‘individualistic’. This has, among other things, brought an end to the last vestiges of Gorin’s ancient caste-system.

These new entrepreneurial views, coupled with the completion of several huge irrigation projects, have had very positive results for the Gorinese economy- at least for the short term. One never knows what the long-term effects of such a change of national character may be.
(+1 Region)

Gorin has also sold the empty northern region of Skilv’so to Croyodon.

For over a generation, a region between the True Lengels and Gorin has been disputed. But until this time both sides were fine with that, as it was strategically insignificant and unimportant in every way.

But under the newer, more religious Gorinese Empire, this challenge to its sovereignty was unacceptable.

Gorin launched a lightning cavalry attack up the Kalmar and Wardash Rivers. The ancient fortress of Magi was captured with almost no fighting at all.

The Lengels were infuriated by this betrayal. Had they not been friends and allies against the Iron Faces? Tens of thousands of Horse Archers volunteered their services to the Khan.

He then countered the Gorinese advances, and launched a massive force between the two, straight towards the Gorinese core. If he could destroy it, he could force the invaders out of the war early on. An excellent plan- had it not been for the sudden arrival of the main Gorinese Army.

The two forces fought at Zawasae. The numerical advantage belonged to the Lengels, as did surprise and mobility. The Gorinese had training and brute force. The Lengels fought standard tactics, charging, firing arrows, retreating, and charging again. Gorin could not easily counter this, so they recalled their cavalry and retreated further towards the capital.

The Lengels continued their rapid advance. It was just north of Bathar where the next battle would take place.

The main Gorinese army turned and charged their pursuers. This caused some significant casualties, but succeeded in its goal of driving back the invaders a short distance. For there, the Lengels ran into two large Gorinese cavalry forces, racing down from the north. The cavalry engaged and infantry prevented Lengel breakouts. The Lengels were utterly crushed, only a few thousand escaped.
(-3000 Gorinese Cavalry, -10 Bajo-Oni, -2000 Gorinese Spearmen, -5000 Lengel Cavalry, -Thousands of Lengel Recruits)

From there, the Gorinese army recaptured all of the Lengel gains, and once again began to push back the border. Over a long and difficult campaign, the remainder of Lengel lands were captured.

The Lengels are now occupied, but Gorin is extremely overstretched. It has become the second largest nation of all time, after the original Lengel zenith.
(+1 Region, -10 Bajo-Oni, -2000 Spearmen, -1000 Mooseys, -Lengels)

Khemri too is evolving societally. It is developing more towards something of a meritocratic feudal system, rewarding those who do better but preventing amassed power in the hands of inept inheritors.
(+Confidence)

Much to their frustration, Khemri’s recruits are not being let go. They remain active, scattered throughout the empire. They are annoyed to do what they think should be the professional military’s job, and many desire to return back to peaceful existences at home.
(-Confidence)

Skilv’so has begun the construction of the Avenue of Chimes, a beautiful lane in Gastar filled with local artwork and bells/chimes/various things like that.

Easily annoyed people are already fleeing en masse to Windkeep. But the rest think it’s a fascinating and unique idea.

The Swades begin filling their governmental actions with Duran Duran meta-messages. The Penguins pay them a visit and insist that There’s Something they Should Know, they Don’t Want Your Love, the Swades should Save their Prayers for the Blademaster. They should stop doing this sort of thing and stay in the Ordinary World, lest Iggy develop a View to Kill them and unleash the Notorious Wild Boys upon the Swades during the New Moon, on Monday.

I’m Serious.

The Swade Ascendancy has done much in the way of expanding this turn. The remaining unclaimed land north of Ozkir was taken, and the state of Ozkir was granted independence, with disastrous results. The people are little more than Bladeist Barbarians (though many will insist that that’s what all Swades are) and the tribute payments paid to the Ascendancy are economically crushing the fledgling nation.

The people of Ozkir plead to be brought back into the Ascendancy, or be at least not required to make payments to the Swades.

Much missionary effort was also focused on the lands west of Guangfei. There is now a large Bladist population among the barbarians, although they have not yet formed into an organized state.

The Myocacans have finally rebuilt the Grand Gates of Blade in Venustas. They now begin to pour their efforts towards the Light of Blade, a colossal lighthouse that will be a testament to the glory of Bladism and the Blademaster.

But all of this is secondary to the major events of the south. The Sintonian rebellion, and the arrival of foreign aid.

With the formation of the Valin Republic of Veritas, there was a resurgence of Old Veritasian culture. Redemption quickly developed into a new Valin nexus.
(+Redemption Cultural Center)

The Valfei war has finally come to an inconclusive end. Overall, it can be considered more of a loss than a victory for the Valins, the only territory changes remaining are the areas controlled by the Sintonian rebels.

Stratikrator Vandrios, at great age, passed away in Guanzhong. The Guangfei respected their fallen adversary, and the Valins left with their leader’s body.

In Redemption, the commanders and captains of the forces of Exilsium previously fighting alongside New Veritas were informed of the formation of the Valin Republics of Veritas. When asked to swear allegiance to this union, many agreed. For they had been long surrounded with the culture of New Veritas, and had grown fiercely loyal to it. Those who didn’t were- detained.

As word spread to Exilsium of the formation of the Valin Republics of Veritas, a rumour broke out that the Assemblum Popularum Exilsium was cutting off connections with the Church of the One, and replacing the One with the worship of a ‘Life Force’. This is probably unlikely, but it was the cassus belli for the VRoV’s invasion.

The troops landed without warning in southeastern Exilsium (somewhat haphazardly, due to poor weather), and quickly conquered a large area before Exilsium could react.

A counterattack was launched at Solin, and a large Latis force threatened to push out the Veritasian invaders.

However, this offensive was foiled by the breakout of a rebellion in Pax, an area strongly following the Church of the One. Exilsium was forced to divert forces to hold off the rebels.

After a multi-year campaign, the main island was captured, and a new government was set up in Pax. Then, the invaders advanced to the capital island. In a heated battle, the Assemblum Hall was captured and the representatives dismissed.

Exilsium had become the Third Republic of the rapidly-growing Valin Republics of Veritas.
(-500 Palantioi, -500 Spearmen, -1500 Scimitari, +15 Triremes, -Exilsium
Note: There were more casualties, but they were canceled out the Exilsium troops who joined Veritas)

In the south, the campaign against Sintonia was drawing to a close. A Valin fleet armed with ‘Valin Fire’ devastated the enemy capital in a daring raid, setting off a firestorm that consumed 1/3 of the city. Then, 9000 troops began advancing from the north. The Sintonians could only pray to the Blademaster for aid.

But it wouldn’t arrive in time.

The city of Sintonia was captured after the defeat of the southern Sintonian army, but Sultan Kazi and most of his government were nowhere to be found. Searches were organized when news came of a naval invasion.
(-1000 Veritasian Urban Militia, -1000 Palantioi, -1000 Spearmen)

Khemri had amassed a colossal fleet. Combined with those of its allies, it was over twice Veritas’ navy’s size.

The two titanic fleets crashed into each other off the coast of Redemption in the hugest naval battle ever fought up to this point.

Valin fire wreaked havoc with Khemri’s fleet but the fire was frequently turned against its master due to the very new nature of the technology, and the lack of time to test it.

After several days of on and off battling, both fleets were dramatically whittled down. But one event sealed the battle’s fate.

On the sixth day of battle, a heavy fog had rolled in. The engagements became even more chaotic, and visibility became terrible.

Then from behind Veritas, a group of 10 Bladeremes struck out from the fog. The flames of the battle had given away its location, while the Bladeremes were able to row in undetected.

The remainder of the Valin fleet shattered and destroyed to the last ship. Oceanus Conaivium was slain by Khemri marines at the very end of the Battle, as they swarmed onto his flagship, the Liberation.
(-Veritas’ Fleet, -40 Khemri Tridents, -20 Bimarines, -25 Galleys, -5 Swade Bladeremes)

Now, for the interesting story of those Swade Bladeremes. As the Sea Battle of Redemption began, they slipped by in the chaos and raced for Sintonia.

They found the area already occupied, but dropped off their force regardless, and headed back to the battle. The Swade swordsmen proceeded to wage guerilla war against the Veritasians. They didn’t do serious damage, but kept their enemies too busy to deal with the upcoming invasions around Redemption.

After the victory off the coast of Redemption, thousands of soldiers landed around the coast, and more landed to help the Sintonians. Huge numbers of people volunteered for the urban militia.

But the fate of New Veritas was already sealed. It could hold out for a time, but its enemies numbers were insurmountable.

Soon, Bladeist forces began attacking. Saenium was captured after a bloody battle, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians. The defensive line near Qingdao was overrun with a mass of Swade levees and Myocacan professionals.

In the south, the hidden Sintonian government and remnants of the army emerged and joined Khemri and Swade forces in retaking the city.

The Veritasians realized that fighting in the open was futile. So they withdrew all of the foods available in their remaining lands and fortified into their capital.

From the west came the Bladists, slaughtering and pillaging their way towards the great fortress of Redemption. From the east came Khemri and Sintonia. From the north came the Khemri fleet, futilely bombarding the cliff walls of the Valin capital.

The great city is still under siege from all fronts with no chance of relief. It has repelled all attempted assaults, but this can only last so long.

Supplies are running out…
(-All of Veritas’ army save 1000 Palantioi and 1500 Scimitari, in Exilsium, 1500 Phoenix Archers and 10 000+ Urban Militia in Redemption; -Thousands of Swade recruits (not in stats), -2000 Swordsmen of Divine Enlightenment, -1000 Bigjaur Riders, -2500 Myocacan Cavalry, -2000 Bigjaur Riders, -9 Ramids, -2500 Khemri Royal Guards, -2500 Cataphratori, -500 Horse Archers, -All Sintonian army)

But this was by no means the last fighting actions of the Valins in these troubled recent years.

In Old Veritas, a time of unrest had come. A few minor anti-Khemri demonstrations had taken place.

One Khemri official, however, saw what was going on. His group had recently discovered hints of a large Valin unity network. The recent events in the Valin nations seemed to confirm this information.

A search was only beginning when the War of the White Rose began.

It started off with several attacks around Khemri, particularly the Port of Khadon. No serious damage, but a group named ‘The Order of the White Rose’ claimed responsibility.

Then a revolt took place on the island of Veritas. The local garrison was overthrown and the Khemri-built government buildings torched.

Khemri was quick to react, moving troops into Valin areas. But they had no fleet to take the island with, while the White Roses had a ragtag fleet composed of several commandeered merchant ships and a few Valin military vessels.

Then, a full-scale rebellion broke out. All over, White Rose cells propelled Valins into rebellion. Even a few Zibonese began to revolt along with them, thinking back to their glory days as the prosperous nation of Tellium. Khemri’s forces were attacked by vast numbers, and many were killed in the first few days. Within a few weeks, the entirety of Old Veritas held by Khemri was in White Rose hands, save the city of Dysonis (which was settled primarily by Khemri).

An announcement to the UKKK was made by the Order, who declared that all they wanted was freedom for Old Veritas. The request was denied by Khemri almost immediately, though the Order will probably accept a change of heart on Khemri’s part.

For now, the rebels are easily holding their ground against Khemri’s limited forces in the area. But this could easily change in the future.
(-10 000 Khemri Recruits, -1500 Royal Guards, +Order of the White Rose)

Guangfei’s populace is beginning to grow tired of the continuation of increased taxes, especially since the war is now over. They believe the Valins should be paying, not them. However, they are pleased by the end of the war and the government’s hard work in repairing war-damaged lands.

Guanzhong has been rebuilt, greater than ever before. Upon the ruins of the Temple of Heaven a new temple has been constructed.
(+Guanzhong Cultural Center)

Southern Alatia has been granted independence, forming the nation of Buguan, under King Cheng Ji.
(+Buguan)

The chaos continued in Shangei, with anarchy reigning uncontested. After decades of the chaos, a coalition of varied groups approached Guangfei and requested it to annex the region and restore peace. This group was not a majority, not even close, but it was still significant, significant enough for Guangfei to accept their proposal and take control of the region.

There was regular fighting, but the disorganized factions could do little against the might of Guangfei.

Khemri maintains its occupation of Trinlin, much to Magland’s chagrin (they had been expecting to take the land when Khemri withdrew). The two states established in former Trinlin continue to grow and develop peacefully.

South of Sintonia, the city-states of Gerougia have been united at last into one nation. They find themselves suddenly powerful- but also suddenly under the attention of eyes from across the water…

Notes: I’m going to begin gradually phasing out the power numbers next to units. If you want to see relative strength, it’s in the military section of the rules.

Actually Swiss, your meta-stuff is fine, it gave me a laugh.

@Wubba360 Which one’s Helmthorn again? Did I get it right?

Greetings. Accept our apologies for the ragged state of our embassy, but we are currently engaged in a brutal war with an enemy that has pillaged our lands, and slaughtered our people. They call themselves the "Bladeists," after the weapons of death that they prize above all things. We are the people of Veritas, the Children of the One. You seem like in stature and skin tone to one of our race, called Valin. Valins have light skin, and worship the supreme ruler of all Tellus, named the One. Perhaps you are forgotten cousins of our people, who fled Paradise into an Exile, as did we.

We wish only for three things from your good people: Peace, trade, and friendship. To cement the bonds of goodwill between our people, we offer you a strong and durable metal, called iron. It can be bent to your will with proper knowledge, and forged into whatever your people require.

We only request that you do not heed the lies of any who call themselves Bladeist...they have done enough damage to our world.

As for the relationship of Valin and Gerougioikoi, we admit that our legends do indeed tell of an ancient exile. Our hieroi (priests) would love nothing more than to consult with yours on the nature of the First Journey and the possibility of our relationship. We are greatly encouraged by the similarity of our languages. While certainly not the same, Valin was not a difficult language to learn. From these signs, among others presented by the King of the World Himself, we believe we are brother races. We embrace the gifts you have given us and assure that our harbours are open to our friends when they are in need.

Our final proof is in our shared love of the One Creator of the Universe and we praise Him and thank Him for delivering to us fellow followers of His ways.

A Dash of Crimson

“Fire to Redemption. Long Reign the Emperors” –Rumored last words of Count-General Fei Shala

Peace, prosperity, and stability, they were the traditional tasks of all Guangfei Emperors since the beginning of time. The Valfei War had ended and Qingdao remained Han. The Valfei were no more, either loyal subjects of the Emperor or exiles in faraway lands, besieged by enemies. What exiles they were, fighting and dying on foreign soil, following a faith, not a people, or culture. They were beyond shame.

That was the ideal Guangfei was founded, One People, One Culture, One Land, and One Empire under One Emperor. One religion if possible, but that wasn’t necessary. Culture and people above religion had been, and always will be, the Guangfei creed, witnessed at the Battles in Qingdao and the Dadong Pass where loyal Oneists fought against treacherous ones. The Birth of the Great Prophet Lao Tzu, the Han Pacian, as some of his followers called him.

And indeed, the ancient maxim was right. What does not kill, will strengthen. And how right it was, Guangfei was stronger and more unified then ever. Before the Valfei War had swept across the lands from Qingdao to Shangei, the people were divided with rebellion never far from mind. Yet how it had all changed in one single war as the national identity was strengthened, bonds of fellowship were made, and an Empire was forged to last for many millennia.

“Qian qiu wan dai” A thousand autumns, 10,000 generations, that was the length that Emperors and Kings dreamed for their dynasty and nations. Yet what nation had truly come to see that? If the first, then never the second. Empires rise, and Empires fall and the people do not always stay the same. Veritas, no longer truly Veritas, Khemri, no longer truly Khemri, and neither was Gorin. All other states have long been vanquished and only rebuilt.

Undoubtedly, one man, and one man alone was responsible for changing Guangfei and setting her into the new stone she had found for herself. He had no name of his own, just the name of his fathers. “Jiang” his name was the first of the infamous Hanfei, or traitors of Guangfei. Even after death, he was given no mercy or rest. Death, was only the beginning for him. His corpse was mutilated beyond imagination, then chopped up into small pieces, deep fried, and cast in all directions of the Fei River.

Fed to fishes, dispersed, all images and remnants of him gone, that was the penalty for treason of the highest order. And so it was to be, that the name Jiang became very unpopular in Guangfei. So unpopular that even "insignificant" peasants changed their surnames, not out of fear of the Imperial Government, but out of sheer shame. That one of their blood could do such a thing. It was beyond shame, it was complete disgrace to the family name.

A disgrace so terrible, that their name must cease to exist for the greater good so no further shame could be added. And so it was done, in less then a decade the name “Jiang” had ceased to appear on the Imperial Rolls throughout the Empire. The People, as always, was and is the Center of any True Empire. Without them, an Empire can never be an Empire.

A dash of crimson.

Hamaniar was the first to speak before the Council for the Cenotaph. The Guides and councilors, and indeed the entire population, who had survived the sack of Aldisir relied on her speech to move the assembled. Her brow was damp with the sweat of concentration and nervousness. A young Councillor from Faransir stood to make his speech. Hamaniar admired his eloquence and charm, though the speech he made was merely a formality. The Council would overwhelmingly approve the second northern expedition. Faransir, crowded and overpopulated, was pushing hardest for expanding the borders, but no one truly opposed the Progressive agenda.

The young man droned onward, and Hamaniar saw rather than heard a tsk of disgust from an elderly Conservative councilor from Keliosir. Lasian, she was, the only councilor to oppose war with Tsaya. She was the oldest councilor, the most irritable, and the only one who (vocally, at least), opposed the civic fervor that had swept through Kelios during the war.

As the youth (Hamaniar could not remember for the life of her what his name was; it hardly mattered) wrapped up his speech, there was a lull of contented silence in the Hall. Everyone had heard what they wanted to hear. Everyone, that is, except Lasian. She stood now, and, waving a hand at the Most Revered in what could only be described as a flagrant breach of a custom Lasian clearly felt did not apply to the aged, tottered to the front of the Council. Most Revered Jarsindin, a rather ineffective man of middling age, another compromise choice, did nothing to stop her; she would speak no matter what he did. Hamaniar was a tad bit relieved. It would be that much longer before her own time to take the stand came.

Along with the rest of the assembled, Hamaniar turned a deaf ear to Lasian’s haranguing. Lasian was fervent in her own ideas but was hardly convincing to everyone else. Kelios embraced progress, and Lasian was simply too quaint for most of the populace. Hamaniar half-wondered what the people of Lasian’s walk[1] thought of her; he she simply been their councilor for so long that they had forgotten or forgiven her oddities? Lasian was stalking the aisles now, still speaking in a voice that boomed throughout the Hall. Hamaniar had seen this behavior a few times before; it meant that Lasian was looking for a target who had not been paying enough attention to her speech to make an example of. Hamaniar put on a smile and looked attentively over at Lasian, now trudging past the row in front of her.

Apparently, Lasian did not find any miscreants, so she stumbled back to the center of the Hall to give her final pronouncement of Kelios’s impending doom. Hamaniar’s fellow councilors were yawning around her, and many of the Guides had congregated in the rear and were engaged in what Hamaniar supposed must be a delightful philosophical discussion. Lasian’s voice trembled with conviction at her final pronouncement of the need to leave Tsaya (not particularly relevant) and to abandon the expedition (more so), and she took her seat. The silence this time was conspicuous for the occasional snores (mostly faked). Most Revered Jarsindin himself seemed to have nodded off a bit, but rubbed his eyes and shook off the sleepiness before calling for a vote.

The vote, just like the speeches proceeding it, was merely a formality.

“All in favor of the measure to fund a settling expedition to the northern lands?”

416 hands rose in the air. Hamaniar did not need to count; she knew 12 of the 429 councilors were either ill or at home. Jarsindin’s scribe looked suspiciously as if he, also, was not counting.

“And all opposed?”

Lasian stood all alone. There were a few snickers. Standing during a vote was an abandoned custom.

“Well, then, it is decided. By a vote of… hmmm… 416 in favor to 1 opposed, with 12 abstaining, an expedition will be sent to settle the northern frontier. And now, we will here from Councilor Hamaniar, formerly of Aldisir, who heads a coalition to construct a grand Cenotaph at the site of her former home city. Hamaniar, please rise and come to the front.”

Hamaniar’s hands were trembling again, and her brow was wet. She picked up her papers and wandered to the front. After a moment, she began to speak.

[1]A “walk” is more or less a constituency from the idea that districts within a city are supposed to be no longer than an hour walk all the way across.

Rebirth

“Thantos!”

The little boy pretended to be asleep. He knew it was his mother calling him, knew that if she realized he was awake, he would be forced to do some chore or another.

“Thantos!”

She was tugging at him, now, and it was ever harder to be still. And yet, Thantos had had a lot of practice foiling his mother. He knew just how to pretend to be asleep.

“There’s a visitor, Thantos. I know you’re not sleeping. Get up!”

Intrigued by the possibility of a visitor, as rarely did anyone come to his mother’s humble apartment in the city of Veritas, Thantos bolted upright. He blinked, and looked around, but saw no one out of the ordinary.

“You tricked me,” he said, pointing an accusing finger.

“That I did,” said his mother, with a self-satisfied smile. “Now, go run down to the market at the end of the street. We need… Well, you know what we need, you’ve done this enough times.”

Committed to getting his assignment done as quickly as possible, Thantos hopped out of the loft, flung open the door, and walked out into the crowded streets, barely remembering to take the coins from his mother.

The streets looked different, that day, to the little boy, as he hurried along, minding his own business. He wasn’t sure exactly why, but he felt something in the air. Thantos shrugged his shoulders.

Reaching the market, Thantos past by a display of apples, and grabbed one, almost without thinking.

Instantly, strong hands grabbed him from behind, and lifted him off the ground. Thantos flailed, for a moment, but was quickly dropped back down to his feet. He tried to scamper away, but the man who had stopped him was joined by a pair of friends, who surrounded Thantos, pinning him against the wall of a stall.

“What do ya’ want?” the boy asked, trying to regain a bit of dignity. He no longer held the apple; out of the corner of his eye, he had seen it had been returned to its place on the display.

“Nothing,” said the central speaker of the three.

“And yet everything,” said the one to his right.

The three were all large Veritasian men, and Thantos saw a glimmer of steel under their coats. They were soldiers.

“I…I didn’t mean to,” said Thantos. “You took it before I could eat it. No…no harm done.”

“Let’s go, Eukrates,” said the leftmost man. “We don’t have time for a mere boy. There are more important things today than your sense of wrong and right.”

The center man looked at the one who had spoke, and then shook his head no. “You are wrong,” he said. “How can we uphold our ideals, if we do not always uphold our ideals?”

The center man, Eukrates, knelt, lowering himself to Thantos’ level.

“Do you understand what you did?” he asked.

“I stole something,” said Thantos. “Stealing is bad.” He wondered when he would get to leave.

“Indeed,” said Eukrates. He paused. “There is a question I would like to ask you, young one.”

“What is it?”

“What could one steal that would be worse than stealing an apple?”

“A melon?” Thantos guessed, confused.

However, it seemed Eukrates had his own words to speak, and did not need to be prompted. “An island,” he said. “A nation.”

Eukrates got to his feet, and fire filled his eyes. “One can find the passion to do ones duty in all things,” he said. “Even in a little boy stealing an apple.”

He glanced from side to side, and his two partners, then waved his hand, and hailed down a Khmeri officer in the road, guarding the street from horseback.

“What can I do for you, gentlemen?” he asked.

“Can you give back what your people stole?” Eukrates responded.

The looked on the Khmeri officer’s face went from complacent, to shocked. “What are you talking about?” he asked.

Eukrates gave a firm look to Thantos. “Run along now, little boy,” he said. “Tell the world that a new dawn is rising.”

Thantos didn’t need much encouragement to leave to strange gathering. He ran off, but doubled back, remembering that he still needed to buy things at the market. He glanced over at where Eukrates was talking to the Khmeri officer, just in time to see that officer fall to the ground, covering it with blood.

Eukrates’ sword was out, and so were the swords of his companions.

As chaos began to fill the market, Thantos turned tail and ran. Something was being taken back, he knew.

What that was, he could not even begin to comprehend.

Hail and well met brethern. We heard of your glorious people by way of our Grand Allies of Sintonia. We are the Bladeist Fatherland, perhaps you've heard of our religion, for it seems to have effected the formation of yours. Excuse our diplomats ragged appearance, they have had to travel a long way and in hiding to skirt the Vile Ships of Veritas.

We bring you news of a world corrupted by the plague of Oneism, but soon to be pacified by the forces of good, headed up by the Bladeist Crusaders whom lay they lives on the line. But we are also bearers of the Message of the Blademaster. We shant push our religion on you, but we offer to help you build your self up to to level of most Bladeists States. Once Oneism is finally defeated, perhaps we can share a peaceful world, together.

And be warned, the Valin lie and backstab. Recently they have betrayed their closest ally by Conquering their entire homeland, and history tells of how the Vaqlin builds up minor Barbarian or newly Urban states and then annexs them or conquers them. Kalamar, Emor, Sintonia, the list goes on. Beware, young Disiples, and stay safe.

From henceforth, all Swade missionaries are expelled from Guangfei and will be refused transit across the Empire on pain of death. All subjects of the Ascendancy are ordered to leave the Empire. However, as always the subjects and representatives of Myocaca are free to remain in Guangfei.

The vote was narrow, but it had passed, and both the councilors and the people would praise it.

Hamaniar rode atop the stones her horse alone could have smoothed. Within her first year as a councilor from Aldisir, from a new and wealthy walk near the great gates of the city, she had lost track of the number of trips she took on the White Road[1] between Aldisir and Keliosir, traveling to and from the Hall of the Council. Always, in that first year, and in the many years following, her home awaited her on the return trip to Aldisir. Not this time. This time, things were different.

She was prepared for the sight of the ruins. She had seen it from far the day the city fell, and again upon its liberation. She had returned four times during the construction of the Cenotaph, its dome rising up in the wreckage. The wreckage was mostly gone now. The hill on which Aldisir had rested was crowned only by new construction; the Hall had exploited the opportunity to order the construction of hundreds of new buildings of shimmering greystone quarried in the surrounding mountains. People were returning to Aldisir now, the wealthy and the poor, though many among the poor had also taken the opportunity to pledge as Soldiers of the Dove. Hamaniar herself had considered such a course for a while, when she despaired of Aldisir ever being rebuilt.

She and her fellow councilors from the city had been in a long limbo. There was no one left to support them, and three whole classes of councilors form other cities and form the countryside had passed in and out of the Hall during her time. Most Revered Jarsindin had decreed that the Aldisir councilors would remain until the city was rebuilt, but still she felt awkward among her fellows from elsewhere. It was liberating but oppressing, representing no one. She had the niggling feeling that the Path did not involve undiscussed decisions like hers, and feared for the future should her own personal wisdom prove unworthy and incomparable to the wisdom of the many.

However, the time for such hesistance was over. Aldisir was revived, and today she would attend the opening of the Cenotaph. Some called it a somber occasion, one to makr the passing of thousands of Kelia soldiers and of tens of thousands of Kelia civilians lost in the bloody war with Tsaya. Others called it a festival, a celebration of the triumph of the people over adversity, and of the rebuilding of Aldisir. Hamaniar herself was conflicted. Her son had died in the fire, and her daughter had died in the last battle at Tsariga, right when victory was at hand. Hamaniar did not mourn her loss; her children would return, somewhere, though likely farther away than she could imagine. Nonetheless, she could not shake the sadness she felt for the destruction of what had been wrought by the people: the farms and homes, the shops, the guidehouses, the courts, the walls. The libraries and the schools.

She sighed. What is lost is lost, and what is new will replace it. She allowed herself a small smile at the ancient proverb, a definition of Kelia society. Her horse strode beneath the greystone arch that marked the West Gate of the new Aldisir. The landscape changed not at all within the walls—farms stretched off to both sides still—yet one day the city would need new walls, and larger. Hamaniar knew that she would not live to see that day, but she would live to see its beginnings. The Cenotaph was to open today, and it would be the start, just maybe, of a new dawn. For Aldisir, and for Kelios.

[1]Named for the whitestone (marble) with which it is paved at the entrance to Keliosir and, formerly, Aldisir. For most of the distance, the road is actually paved with normal bluish-greyish local rock.

Garmarfin let out a long breath. He was too old for this sort thing. He should never have volunteered for this assignment. Even the Council had seen it when he stood before them. He was one of most honored of the Guides, a great leader among the people and looked to for counsel by the entire populace of Faransir, yet the Council had only barely voted to appoint him leader of the Tsayan expedition. At the time, he had though himself slighted, his honor impugned and the Council foolish. He had been the foolish one to declare his desire to run a mission so far from the easy lands of home. So great a fool.

They had come down out of the mountains of the new road, perhaps the first civilians to traverse the still-rough stones. Some place far to the east, the army was still working; the road would be finished in less than a week, if it were completed on time. Gamarfin did not think he would ever reach the city at the far end. His mission was not truly meant to, in any case. They had been sent only to instruct the people of Tsaya, most of whom huddled in tiny homes set far back in the countryside, still afraid of marauding Kelia armies. The damage of war was something Garmarfin wished the world could do without. Though he himself had lost nothing, it pained him greatly to see one person so afraid of others, so unwilling to cooperate and to work towards the ultimate vision.

He was proud of his job. He was bringing these people out of their shelters, reassuring them that the war was over, that the shades of death had passed, and that all of the people of Kelios would now work together to rebuild. Sometimes he was met by cries of joy and tears of hope and his heart was raised high. These Tsayans quickly welcomed him and his followers into their homes and learned his teachings. Nonetheless, there were a minority of Tsayans (a small minority) who turned to rage at his words of comfort, who retreated inward into their places of shelter and refused to speak to him. It was these people who made him break down and cry, for them and for the future of all people. How could there be so much distrust in the world, so much unwillingness to work together? It baffled a man who had lived all his life in the highlands of Kelios.

Now he was falling ill once more. It was his fourth illness on the trip and looked set to be the worst yet. Each had been worse than the last. He could teach fewer Tsayans when ill, could dispatch fewer of the young and zealous to scour the countryside for stragglers. He could not command the intricate network of Guides that had already spread itself Tsaya like so much lace. Coming here had been a poor choice on his part, one borne from the vanity of a man grown too obsessed with his own righteousness. Every Tsayan who turned him away broke his heart and made him only weaker when he had to be strong. Coming here had been a poor choice on his part, indeed.

----

Months later, the shrouded body of Garmarfin reaches the city of Tsarinsir, formerly Port Tsariga, just a few days ahead of the Most Revered. He had brought hope to the people of Tsaya, and faith that cooperation would bring the world farther along the Path. He had died in peace, if illness could be called peace, in the open plains. The Guides of Tsaya were reorganized now, and a new, young leader was chosen. But Garmarfin would not be forgotten, and, in his speech before the assembled people of Tsarinsir, Most Revered Jarsindin bestowed upon him a new title: Chosen. Garmarfin, first of the Chosen Guides, went down in the lore of the people of Tsaya, and, even when Tsaya had shed all distinctiveness, reverence for the ill man who brought them hope would remain.

A Dash of Humor

“Food for the body is as necessary as knowledge is for the mind. An essential and much better well cooked as knowledge well written. It is a true hallmark of civilization indeed.” –Anonymous Guangfei Scholar

Yangzhou Chao Fan (Fried Rice)

Ingredients:

2 eggs
1 jin(500 grams) of rice
1/2 liang(25 grams) of shrimp
1 spoonful of salt
2 stalks of leek
½ onion
½ clove of garlic
1 ge(100 mL) of oil, preferably vegetable

Optional:
One spoonful of soy sauce for taste
Pinch of ginger for spice

Cooking Instructions:

Preparation- The two eggs are to be cracked in a bowl where both the egg yolk and white are to be stirred until it becomes a fine yellowy liquid. The stalks of leek are to be cut into small pieces while the shrimp is to be beheaded and de-tailed. The onion is to be peeled and then cut into finer strips while the clove of garlic is to be grounded up into small pieces. The ginger, if used, is to be also well grounded up prior to the cooking.
-The fire upon which the meal is to be cooked should have been burning for around 20 minutes prior to the cooking. The work (think frying pan but deeper with curving sides) should be well oiled and washed prior to the actual cooking.
-Freshness is optimal, observe for any defects or signs of decay in the chosen ingredients

Cooking- The stirred egg yolk and white is to be placed into the frying pan first with a few drops of oil placed shortly afterwards and once the yolk and white have solidified via the usage of the turner. After this, the rice is to be added and through the turner the rice and egg is to be mixed.
-After mixing, the shrimp should be added next and allowed to heat before adding the onion peels and then the sprinkling the pieces of garlic upon the dish while using the turner to cook the food. The oil is to be of course added gradually as the ingredients are added into the meal
-Continue using the turner and mix around the food and if you have experience, you should “throw” the food into the air or so to speak to insure a better quality as the food lands on the well heated wok. If adding soy sauce or ginger, this is the time to add them.

Presentation- Prior to presentation, the pieces of leek are to be added into the rice and quickly mixed. The fried rice should be preferably placed upon a large plate and presented while still steaming hot.

After reviewing our most ancient texts, and consulting the Summa, we have come to the following conclusion: That the one named St. Pire was a true disciple of the One, and his teachings were directly inspired by His guidance. His works are a great addition to the Oneist faith. We also have resolved that Pirian Oneism has many righteous doctrines that should be incorporated into the mother Church.

On this agreement, we would like to propose that religious negotiations between our faiths begin again, as agreed upon in the Second Treaty of Venix.

Note the underlined statement.

I personally would argue that my position is superior, especially if you look at it in terms of momentum. Your empire is aging, having already reached its zenith, where mine has been newly revitalized.

Also, if me and Imago win the war, or sign peace after you quit, you can claim that it was the fault of the NPC/whoever takes Khemri after you.

At no point has my Momentum been that large, this has worked to my advantage, because momentum can be used against you, it shows the direction you are taking clearly, you give your enemies poltical capital to forge alliances and so on.

I personally think that the Citadel is actually the old Eldrania, and has actively been infiltrating soldiers into every nation on Tellus, along with building an uber-army to finally launch their devastating final crusade on us all!

Well, it would be a good plot twist. :p

Impossible, Eldranians or people from the Citadel or from almost anywhere else would be spotted on sight considering the ethnic differences ;) I love Guangfei being Asiatic :p

It was destiny. The people multiplied. Blood was spilt in needless conflicts. But now the Progressive agenda would be realized. The first settlers set forth from Keliosir, bound for the north.

Yusuanin led the party. He was a young man, fewer than thirty winters passed, yet capable. The Council had newfound respect for the young these days as the elder generations faded. Yusuanin himself had been a Guide for just two years, and before then an acolyte. Some said that his rise came too fast. The late Lasian, last of the old Conservatives, was the most vocal opposition to his appointment. Yet, after the death of Garmarfin during the Tsaya conversion expedition, it was clear that the strength of youth trumped the veneration of age. Yusuanin had been opposed by only twelve out of four hundred and twenty-three assembled.

The expedition itself left a year later than anticipated. Snows in the northern valleys were particularly heavy, and the excessive snowmelt impeded travel for a full year. None of the local peoples had seen so much snow before. Nor had Yusuanin, a Mardsira. They had remained in Keliosir. Some of the Council grumbled about the expense to the people, but it was clear than nothing could be done. The price had to be paid, and the expedition had to go forward. Early the next spring, they left.

Yusuanin had read of the earlier northern expedition. There had been some talk then of fertile land in the north, beyond the dry lands. Of course, even the dry lands had potential for grazing, but few in Kelios herded sheep. Yusuanin himself had seen sheep only once and eaten mutton only twice. It was grains that drove the agriculture of the nation. Perhaps northern settlement would change that. Yusuanin knew nothing of the long-term plans of the Most Revered or of the most prominent Councilors.

What Yusuanin did know much of was leadership. The men and women of his expedition were fiercely loyal, though they ahd so far encountered only good luck. The old stories of the first expedition had been of great aid in discovering pools of water and small streams. Streams ran northward in this country beyond the mountains. Yusuanin had never seen a stream that flowed north, but he supposed the mountains blocked the way much as they had barred the way during the winter. Plans for a road would change that, someday, but the rivers would always be an oddity here.

They eventually reached the river discovered by the first expedition. The goal had been to settle the region, some time in the future. It was fertile, and the river could irrigate the land. Yusuanin felt the soil give beneath his feet; it was lush and fertile.

The expedition had arrived earlier than originally intended. It was only early summer. The return trip would be made before winter set in, and they would return the next year to settle as the Council had decreed. The expansion of Kelios had begun.

Not as good as my earlier stories, I know.

We actually want peace on earth! Gasp!

Well that's just plain insidious. As war drives progress, by enforcing peace on the Earth you will ensure stagnation and complacency. The Citadel of Knowledge will then naturally outrace everyone technologically, being in a great position for draining brains, and eventually will create giant robots that will do all the fighting for them and conquer the world, whilst allowing their creators to leave their pacifist reputation untarnished.

Kamyanan was credited with the brilliant plan to provide for both the defense and the wealth of the nation at the same time, and it was from the name of his Order, the Order of the Dove, that the new farmer-soldiers received their name.

He was inspired by the serfs of Tsaya. Admittedly, and even Kamyanan knew this, serfdom was not a good place to start. However, the idea of service to the nation tied to the land stuck with him even after his studies of Tsaya were abruptly ended by the outbreak of war. Kamyanan had been a young man then, young, hale and healthy. Now, with rheumy eyes and creaking bones, Kamyanan could not again stride across the Tsayan landscape. What he could do was postulate, and this he did.

In Tsaya, men (and women, who were somewhat subordinate) were forced to work one field. This field belonged to the family and had been acquired by the family ages and ages past. Tsayan law did not permit the land to be sold or leased and required an annual head tax paid to the king in full. The harsh laws against selling had prevented abuses by the Tsayan aristocracy but had also tied the Tsayans to the land. Then, by requiring that at least one man from every plot of land enroll in the military, Tsaya had maintained its military forces and become an aggressive and expansionist power. After all, more land was always needed for second sons.

Kelios, of course, would not tie its people to their land. There was no great aristocracy to fear in Kelios; no man had more power than another by virtue of birth. Nor would it oblige all members of the nation to join the military. However, with the opportunity of huge swathes of unsettled Tsayan lands and many empty plains to the north besides, Kelios could institute some semblance of the old Tsayan serf system. Kamyanan had planned it thusly:

The poor of the cities and those who cannot afford taxes on their farmland in Kelios will be granted completely virgin land in Tsaya should they choose to accept it. By accepting it, these urban and rural poor pledge only one thing—that they, or whoever owns the land on which they will settle, will answer a summoning call to fight in the military. However, if at any time a settler wishes to be free of this military obligation, they may sell their land to another who is then obliged to fulfill the military service tied to the land. In this way, a latent army can be grown from the fallow fields of Tsaya while the pressure on the poor in Kelios proper is reduced.

Kamyanan himself immediately found support for the plan. It seemed, after all, to mesh perfectly with the ideals of civic duty and cooperation between individuals. While no one was completely bound to serve, service was owed by whomever chose to farm land granted to them by the nation. Among the more reticent Guides there was some resistance to the idea, but the few Councilors who heard of it sang its praises. It was not long before Kamyanan, now extremely old and decrepit, was asked to speak before the Council. It had been many years since he ascended the marble steps, as always thronged with those wishing to see the workings of the Council.

When he spoke, had he not been too old to sweat profusely, he would have been doing so from nervousness. His nervous laugh echoed forth more times than some in the assembled cared to count, but they forgave him his aged oddities. The Soldiers of the Dove were born.

I think I lied before and this will be my last story for the turn. Still, 5 is pretty good, no? Maybe I'll feel inspired tomorrow. Sending orders now.

Playing the Hero

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts
-Unkown writer

"What is it that drives competent men to make such stupid decisions with their lives Tare?" The aging man asked, smiling slightly, slightly amused.

"Fate, of course." the other man answered with a barking laugh. "Otherwise, the One would get mighty bored up in his palace if this world was uneventful, wouldn't he?" The blond-haired man said with a small smirk.

"Heh..." The other man, brown-headed, said laughing- agreeing with the man third in line for control of the Union. Jarn Atrex- thee brown-haired man- stood leaning against an ancient stone wall, running a wrinkled hand through his thinning scalp. "If thats true, then may the One help us- it surely will be interesting."

"The One helps only those who help theirselves, m'lord." His faithful second-in-command, Tare, replied. "Sitting around and doing nothing will surely not help our cause anymore."

"Yes- but to war on this scale? Our troops haven't seen a true battle since the time of the great war! Blastmephy, they haven't seen a great battle ever!"

"So, why not let them see one now?"

"This is not a game! Lives are at stake, the future is at stake!"

"Then let us not treat it as one!" Tare vented. "Why sit here and twiddle our thumbs while the rest of the world decides our fate for us? Why sit passive while they play out our destiny?!"

"I know not Tare but think of it form my position! Do you want to be the one who lead destroyed all hope of greatness our nation still has the chance for?! Do you want to be the one put down in history books as the greatest fool Ardan ever produced? I bear the weight of not only your dreams but the dreams of every man within the Union that wants to live to an old age! OF EVERY CHILD THAT WISHES TO BE PUT TO BED BY THEIR FATHER! BY EVERY WOMAN WHO WEEPS BY THEIR WINDOWS FOR THEIR HUSBANDS WHO WILL NOT BE COMMING BACK!" Jarn yelled, his voice bouncing off the stone walls. Where Tare had vented, Jarn had gone all out- his eyes were possessed by a fire unkown to hundreds of previous generations, his nostrils were flared like the greatest beast, and his teeth had already dug into each other.

"I know not what the future will call us if we lose but I know what they will call ud if we do not even try: cowards." Tare said, his comment stinging the ego of the great general.

The older man sighed and seemed to calm down."Are we truly making the right decision?"

"No one can answer that question." Tare said. "Well..." he paused. "At least no one down here on Tellus."

"Why is it that we always have to play the hero? To child ourselves, to force our men to come in and do the impossible?"

"Nothing is impossibe- the very ties of existence could unravel at any moment, I remind you."

"Then why do we leave it upon ourselves?! Why? Why do we take hope in the darkest cave? Why, my friend, must we continue to make love to a dream?!"

"because even in the darkest cave there is a ray of light. Because there is always a sunrise around the corner from midnight. Becuase, even if its a dream, it is something worth fighting- and dying- for. Because we must."

The old man sighed once more. "Why does the One curse me with a poet for a general? What you have said will not happen for years down the road, ages gone past by the time our children's grandchildren having their own families to tend to."

"Because, m'lord, it is only those who can foresee these changes in the world can make those changes to the world. To play the hero is to play the Creator, to play the Creator is a sin. To leave it upon our future is a sin." He said solemnly, eyes bent forwards.

"So......Are we doing the right thing?"

"It all depends on your definition of the 'right' thing, m'lord.Thousands will die on the fields of battle. Fires will ravage the lands once more. Hundreds of thousands will march to war, and more will not be left behind. The world will not be the same, nor would I be willing to gamble to have it come out in our vision either. Blood will pour as if water drawn from the lake."

"So....."

"In my oponion, I believe what we're doing is the best decision mortals like us can make. The best decision anyone can make, for the matter."

"I see....." The old man whispered, staring out of the gray windows.

"Let the drums sound once more, m'lord! Let the world know that not all things from the past are so easily discarded! Let the world realize that what the horsemaster couldn't, we can! Let the drums beat once more, m'lord!" Tare said rythmically, urging the commander on.

"Well then, let us begin; it is time to commit our sin." Jarn said with his toothy smile. In the distant thunder could be heard crashing over the sounds of feet.

King Calmidon I ‘The Weak’

Known by his subjects as a weak and pretty much incompetent ruler especially compared to his predecessors. He failed to win support over much of the military and Nordist followers absolutely hated him. He instated several generals to campaign in the north and often took credit for their victories at home. In fact he could not make a single decision on his own and depended on several advisors to make decisions for him. Often this never even went through because he was nervous of it being the wrong decision. One of his most unpopular decisions was enforcing a high tax on all churches or organized religions within the nation. The Croyodon coffers had grown empty funding his extravagant lifestyle and the military campaigns in the north.

As he aged he grew nervous and feared competition from the Nordist council which was granted domestic control of much of the Nordist dominant lands by the pervious kings. A devout Masra follower along with his paranoia they were plotting to kill him he ordered the council disbanded and all the leaders arrested for conspiracy against the crown. The Council Elect was executed in the town square of Croyodon City after being found guilty by the king.

The military would not stand for this for they had the high percentage of Nordist followers estimated to be near 75% for they had be stationed and campaigned on the frontiers of Croyodon which were the sites of early conversion. In fact the earliest coverts to the religion from Croyodon were soldiers.

After a few weeks after the council elect’s death King Calmidon I was overthrown by General Radtonius who had overwhelming support within the army. He was executed on the same chopping block in the city square of Croyodon. General Radtonius proceeded to crowning himself King of the Croyodon the first non-Masra ruler in centuries.

A civil war erupted with the kingdom soon after as General Radtonius also would not allow the reforming of the council declaring he was the council elect and sole ruler of Croyodon. A fraction led by Nordist followers wanted a republic founded with equal representations of both religions while an extreme fraction of Nordism led by Radtonius wanted a complete theocratic state. The heavily populated regions of Croyodon proper with heavy followings of Masra opposed Radtonius and allied with the Nordist council seeking peece. A battle soon ensued with the much weaker but determined council versus the iron fist of Radtonius….

OCC: Basically Iggy I want to change governments from monarchy to a republic based off the Nord council however rules make it so there must be an equal amount of Nord and Masra representatives in the council. More specifics latter. You will decide how much of the army actually supports the council or Radtonius. I was bored so I started a civil war :p

WHOAH! I just gave it some THOUGHT!

To: Gerougia
From: The Swade Ascendancy

FROM: Gerougia
TO: Swade Ascendancy

While we are unaware of what you mean by "affected our religion," our philosophoi are currently investigating your religion and debate will begin over whether it is a revelation of Autogenes or not. Your diplomats are of course excused and they will be outfitted in our finest clothing. We do warn you, however, that Valin emissaries reside in our halls. We will brook no violence within Gerougia - your wars are foreign and are not our concern.

We wonder why you should want to try to defeat the One God, if that is what you mean, and, in truth, wonder at your belief that you could, in fact, defeat the One God. While our philosophoi have not fully analyzed Oneist Scriptures, we believe from their cursory reports that their religion is a manifestation of Autogenes, the Only True God. Perhaps your Blademaster is Autogenes as well and you are both fighting a foolish battle. Perhaps these long years of war you speak of are God Himself trying to speak to you.

But we are not men of the world and perhaps there is deeper meaning as yet unseen by our eyes. We will continue to watch and learn. We thank you for your embassy and your respect. As the Thinker said, "Peaceful trade proves most profitable to all."

As to your last point, as best as we can tell, these Valin are some relation to our people. We are neither barbaroi (though we forgive you if you did not imply such a thing), nor are we newly urbanized. Since the time of the First Nostos [1] we have thrived in our cities. Perhaps newly unified would be appropriate, but we do not believe it would even be possible, much less productive, for the Valin to attempt to destroy so friendly a people if they are truly in as dire straits as you describe.

Again, we thank you for your help and for you histories of the strange lands you mentioned. Your merchants and your diplomats are welcome, as are your philosophoi. Until next we speak.

From: The Valin Republics of Veritas
To: Gerougia

We heard of your inquiries with the Citadel scholars visiting your lands, and will be happy to provide you with the millenium-long history of all our dealings with those called Bladeist, beginning with their mass murder of several hundred peaceful Valin colonists at Sempronia, and ending with their current bloody rampage across our lands.

Also, let us provide you with a map of the world as known by the people of Veritas and the Citadel.

((OOC: Sorry, don't think I've responded to this yet))

FROM: Gerougia
TO: Valin Republics of Veritas

We most graciously thank our kind benefactors for the gifts they have bestowed. Until next we speak.

We three nations are the primary naval powers of the Exodian Ocean. And all of us have a tradition of exploration and discovery of new lands.

Therefore, we propose that our nations mount a joint expedition to the unknown waters of the East. What exists past Exilsium is unknown to us all, but perhaps we might find the promised lands of the One, those that were spoken of. The expedition should only require 3 ships from each of us, with well trained crews, and the knowledge they bring back could be of great value to us all.

To avoid conflict, is it not best that new peoples not be influenced by the biases and relgions of the old world? Is it not best that they be allowed to escape its war and chaos? Is it not best that they not be subjugated by colonial powers? To this end, we suggest that the Citadel be the only power to explore new lands. We will prepare new peoples for the overseas powers, give them unbiased views of all other countries, and help set up their economies for trade. We will share our knowledge of the world as it becomes available, and would welcome funding for these expeditions. We hope you agree, so that the follies of the old world are not spread to the new one.

OOC: Yay double negatives!

Are you trying to find me or something? :mischief: I highly doubt you will, since Iggy said it was a miracle that Viski Lasi even made it that far, yet alone landing on an island in the middle of the ocean.

Orders: Map the islands so that the rulers might have a clue of the shape and size of the realm. (I won't accept a written description next time...) Spend equally on expansion and building galleys. Explore the waters around in hopes of finding new islands or even passages to the Neverending Lands beyond...

OOC: YES! I get an update title named after me! :D

I (kinda) have two! :D Although it refers to the CRA (hey, nobody's perfectly unbiased!), and one is about our defeat...

I just noticed... my culture is "weak", which isn't actually a measure of culture. I think it's supposed to be "mediocre" (one rise from The Guidehouse and one form the CC), but it would nice if that could be clarified. Thanks! :)

@Cuiv- Yes, it should be mediocre.

Prettymuch the same thing though.

Iggy, have you considered the title suggestions? Are any of them of use, or are you just holding back the bad news? ;)

End of Exile

"The battle for the earth was not lost this day, for it has always been lost as the forces of darkness and madness wax strong on this corrupt day. No this is not the losing of the earth, but the winning of the Multiverse, for the stars are right!"

-The Lord in Green

Epilogue:

He had barely stepped into the Stratikrator's chambers before the voice of Thanatos rang through his ears.

"I had a very strange dream last night, High Elder."

Palerian blinked. The Stratikrator was not one to dream.

"There were two armies, arrayed against each other across a field. They were vast beyond number. One army flew the banners of Khemri, and it was a mighty host. But the men...they were all rotting corpses, following the will of an evil, insatiable master."

"The One has granted you this vision, to make your path clearer."

Thanatos shrugged his broad shoulders. "The army facing it was smaller, but there was bravery in the soldiers eyes. And there were phoenixes, brilliant and flaming. It was beautiful."

"How did the dream end?"

"The army of Khemri came forward, endless and unstoppable. The other army killed thousands, and even called down tongues of living fire from the sky itself...but they all died in the end. There were just too many of those rotting Khemran soldiers."

"I see."

They both fell silent for a time, looking out towards the city below. A few lights flickered in the temples, or on the guard towers...but everything besides was dark, and waiting. The walls loomed beyond that, massive behemoths built by centuries of toil and fear. They saw nothing there, but the men knew that Phoenix Archers slept under crevasses, and in the hidden strongpoints, all of them waiting as they were. Beyond that the land burned with campfires, and it seemed like the marble city was an island of darkness and stone in a sea of flame.

High Elder Palerian glanced at the Stratikrator. He was holding a book, a very slim tome covered in black velvet.

"What is that book, Thanatos?"

"It is a treatise on Divotheism, written by a Citadel scholar."

"You mean, the Sky Gods?"

"Yes. I suppose I picked it up by chance."

Palerian knew that the Stratikrator never did anything by chance. But he let the matter go. In these times, it was usually best to leave a man to his own devices.

"Lord Stratikrator," he began, "I know that this is a difficult time for us all. We are cut off from our comrades, our people..."

"I know that," the Stratikrator interrupted. Then he sighed. "Forgive me. This siege has tried my patience. In all my planning, I had hoped..."

"None of this is your fault."

"But it is! Have you seen those men, the proud soldiers of Veritas, living on starvation rations with no hope for survival? Have you looked into their eyes? Who is to blame, if not the Stratikrator? Conaivium died, trying to prevent this. His line, which for ten generations had led the fleet, is extinguished! The One was not nearly as merciful on me."

Palerian frowned.

"Thanatos. Neither of us are men who enjoy talking very much. Vandrios chose us because of that. And that is exactly why we hate this siege. There are no battles to win, no victories to be taken..."

"Only waiting," the Stratikrator finished.

"Yes. At this point, you want only to die with honor."

The Stratikrator nodded, looking for all the world like a man resigned to an inescapable fate.

High Elder Palerian drew himself up to his full height. "Then Stratikrator Thanatos," he cried, "lead your men to their fate with dignity."

The Stratikrator turned his head, looking out of the window once more. Then he rose, smiling like a man reborn. "You know, Palerian, you speak the truth. Hiding up in the Tower of Command like this, it's just not right. I am the Stratikrator, and my place is with the men."

"Then go to them."

"Palerian, let's leave the Citadel. We may have to spend quite some time in it later."

"It's been far too long since a High Elder personally led his troops into battle alongside the Stratikrator."

Thanatos winked. "Actually...a High Elder's never led anyone into battle, in the entire history of Veritas! Something tells me that there's a reason that's never happened."

The two men laughed, for just a moment forgetting the horrors of the war, the siege, and the constant death that surrounded them.

"Well, give me a spare set of armor, then! It might be a nice change of pace. After all, you do need all the soldiers you can get."

"Have you ever held a sword before?"

"There's a first time for everything."
