View Full Version : New News Update System
Thunderfall Aug 04, 2006, 05:06 PM Starting today we are switching to a new news system that's integrated with the forum. While the new news page doesn't look much different from the old system, there are some key differences. The first difference is that instead of using a separate system for comments, it now uses the forum, so adding your comment is the same as replying to the news thread. Both the comments link and the news title link to the news thread. Another difference is the new frontpage is now valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional (the old frontpage had lots of errors and warnings). Besides these differences, the new system also makes it easier to post news. We hope to bring you even more Civilization news using this new system. :)
Note: Those of you who use RSS feed to get the news should update the feed URL.
WildWeazel Aug 04, 2006, 05:17 PM Hey, this is cool! :) Much better than the old comment system.
SoCalian Aug 04, 2006, 05:25 PM very cool. I like this a lot better than the old system.
Thunderfall Aug 04, 2006, 05:28 PM The old comments system was very bad, because anyone could post, some people made stupid comments and there were also some spam bots that posted hundreds of advertising spam.
Thunderfall Aug 04, 2006, 05:44 PM BTW, Those of you who use RSS feed to get the news should update the feed to:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/external.php?forumids=208
Genocidicbunny Aug 04, 2006, 07:26 PM Nice...this means i can look at the news without leaving the forum..
BCLG100 Aug 04, 2006, 08:40 PM why does this forum have a padlock on it and yet i can post in it?
Thunderfall Aug 04, 2006, 08:50 PM You can post replies but not start new threads. :)
Genocidicbunny Aug 04, 2006, 09:07 PM Does your post count increase on this forum? I hope not otherwise we might have a lot of spamming
WildWeazel Aug 04, 2006, 09:18 PM Yeah, it does. Mine went up when I posted this.
I was the first to post a comment via the new system! :D
Genocidicbunny Aug 04, 2006, 09:37 PM well, might as well use the fact then :)
Tycoon101 Aug 04, 2006, 10:34 PM This interesting. I will use it. Thank you Thunderfall. This is much more clear than the old system. It really confused me.
Bluemofia Aug 04, 2006, 10:39 PM Yay!
I never read the news because that involves me going to the Center, rather than the Forum, and that involves effort. ;)
Now I'll actually read the news! :yeah:
Watiggi Aug 04, 2006, 11:47 PM Well, I guess now there wont have to be a 'related forum thread' link to general discussions anymore. I guess that also means that there is no more need to start a thread in general discussions about a relevent news clip.
jalapeno_dude Aug 05, 2006, 12:55 AM This is great! I always forget to check the main page--so now I can stay in the forum.
strategyonly Aug 05, 2006, 01:13 AM What kind of news are you going to be putting in here? Games? CIV4? News News? etc? just curious
SoCalian Aug 05, 2006, 01:24 AM The same kind of stuff taht has always shown up on the frontpage I should imagine.
Grohan Aug 05, 2006, 02:33 AM This is a big improvement over the old system. :goodjob:
Maybe now people comment news more often because it increases their PC. :p
CivGeneral Aug 05, 2006, 03:28 AM You can post replies but not start new threads. :)
So thats what explains it all about. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me or Firefox is acting wierd on me...
...Anywho, I believe that this system would also be attractive for thoes of us who have RSS wigets :)
Truronian Aug 05, 2006, 07:56 AM Will bumping be disabled in this forum? (ie, will news pieces stay in chronological order)
Thunderfall Aug 05, 2006, 09:14 AM It should be. Otherwise this system would be useless. :)
Teg_Navanis Aug 05, 2006, 10:22 AM Note: Those of you who use RSS feed to get the news should update the feed URL (http://forums.civfanatics.com/external.php?forumids=208).
The link is broken. Whatever, I did it the normal way.
Matrix Aug 05, 2006, 01:41 PM The title on the front page is black instead of dark red.
Thunderfall Aug 05, 2006, 03:36 PM The title on the front page is black instead of dark red.
shows up fine for me... Try reloading the page... You could be using an old CSS file.
Chieftess Aug 05, 2006, 05:00 PM I've never used the RSS feed before... (In fact, I don't even know what to do with it. )
nano2 Aug 05, 2006, 07:43 PM why does this forum have a padlock on it and yet i can post in it?
probably because you cant start a thread
ooh, and now the gotm can be linked directly off the post
deanej Aug 08, 2006, 09:22 AM IE gives me this error on the front page:
Line: 20
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code: 0
Reloading doesn't help.
Genocidicbunny Aug 08, 2006, 03:20 PM Lemme be the first one to say this on this thread.
Use FireFox!
Watiggi Aug 11, 2006, 06:47 AM Will bumping be disabled in this forum? (ie, will news pieces stay in chronological order)
Umm, what's 'bumping'?
Genocidicbunny Aug 11, 2006, 01:12 PM Umm, what's 'bumping'?
you reply to a thread thats old, and didnt have a reply to it for a while, and it brings it back to the top of the forum, because of the previousl said reply

I'm just wondering... like like um.. Before, why didn't u do something like... instead of putting the comments thing there, make apost for every new entry copy the info for the news, then make a link for the comments to goto the that topic in the forum??? I mean, that would of been Simple and its the same thing your doing, -reworking alot of code(unless u guys went wit hmy suggestion)
Thunderfall Aug 13, 2006, 12:23 PM That would require posting the same news at two places, instead of just one place like it's now. :) The old system also generated some unnecessary codes.
BCLG100 Aug 13, 2006, 01:52 PM You've been around a while, and yet you didnt know? Oh well, im always happy to help.
some of us still dont know what spam means either yet :mischief:
Genocidicbunny Aug 13, 2006, 03:21 PM some of us still dont know what spam means either yet :mischief:
No we dont :p
PC+1
Thunderfall Aug 27, 2006, 10:03 AM If you use RSS feed, the URL for RSS v2.0 of the feed is:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/external.php?forumids=208&type=rss2
I've updated the feed URL on the main site links.
BCLG100 Sep 10, 2006, 08:49 PM Is there anyway to have this forum appear right at the top above the civ4 forums?
just i forget it exists and i always figure a news related thing would be best at the top to draw attention to it....
