View Full Version : PLAYERS!! .. Warlords pitboss game with power sessions.
zenspiderz Aug 05, 2006, 01:39 AM A new Pitboss Warlords game will be starting soon. Want to play?
To play you MUST be available on Wednesday 7-10ish (PM) BST (8-11 GMT) for power sessions.
To circumvent firewall issues during power sessions we will be using hamachi free software to establish a secure virtual private network. Go to www.hamachi.cc for info and download.
All victory conditions enabled, default options.
Map size will depend on the number of players.
Map type will be decided by you the players through a vote.
If you are 100% certain you want to play and can reliably turn up on wed evening for power sessions every week (or so) then post your 1st and 2nd choice civ and your prefered map type. In addition you can PM me your the email address with which you wish to recieve game communications and turn notifiers.
UPDATE .. I forgot game speed .. Since this game will be predicated on regular power sessions it will be reasonable and fun to go wth epic .. any objections?
Player roster so far..
zenspiderz - Wang Kon - Korea
TElawrence - Hannibal - Carthage
Rael - Mansa Musa - Mali
The Great Apple - random
brotherlone - Tokugawa - Japan
Kaisu - Churchill - England
mickeyj Aug 05, 2006, 02:13 AM Zen, I'm up for it.
First choice would be Ragnor, second choice Shaka ;)
You have all my other details
Cheers
TELawrence Aug 05, 2006, 03:14 AM Me too - either Carthage or Persia. And preferred map type would be fractal, really - I like things unpredictable
Fosse Aug 05, 2006, 08:15 AM 7-10 GMT in the morning or evening? For me that's the differnce of still in bed or in the middle of my best possible gaming hours!
zenspiderz Aug 05, 2006, 08:47 AM 7-10 GMT in the morning or evening? For me that's the differnce of still in bed or in the middle of my best possible gaming hours!
That would be 7-10 post meridiem (after noon) or pm to you. How is that for you? Given that you are in one of the US time zones this time is late morning or early afternoon for you so I hope you are not still in bed then! Lazy bones. :)
Fosse Aug 05, 2006, 09:49 AM That's perfect! I would like to be Hannibal, if I could.
zenspiderz Aug 06, 2006, 05:30 AM That's perfect! I would like to be Hannibal, if I could.
Sorry Hannibal is taken.. Do you have a second preference?
Rael Aug 06, 2006, 06:09 AM I'd like to join and pick Mansa Musa if he's still availible.
zenspiderz Aug 06, 2006, 08:47 AM I can't help but notice that every player so far has requested a civ with financial as one of its traits...
zenspiderz (me) - Wang kon - financial/protective
mickyj - Ragnor - financial/aggressive
TElawrence - hannibal - financial/charismatic
Rael - Mansa Musa - financial/spiritual
fosse - 1st request was also for hannibal..
TELawrence Aug 06, 2006, 09:39 AM Well in the interest of a balanced game I'd switch to Persia or Catherine (Russia), if one or two others would switch with me, so that I'm not up against a whole bunch of financial enemies - I mean, players...
Fosse Aug 06, 2006, 11:50 AM I saw TELawrence had two picks, otherwise I would have avoided Hannibal. I can always look again, but I already have a lot of Warlords leaders picked in other games I have set up and would like to avoid double picks. It is a funny truth though, that we all did that.
The Great Apple Aug 06, 2006, 11:57 AM I'm up for a game. First choice of Civs would have to be random, second choice... random.
Can I do that?
zenspiderz Aug 06, 2006, 07:21 PM Well in the interest of a balanced game I'd switch to Persia or Catherine (Russia), if one or two others would switch with me, so that I'm not up against a whole bunch of financial enemies - I mean, players...
You can play hannibal if you like. I don't think it is a problem if we all have financial civs except that if everyone is financial then in a sense we will all have only one not two civ traits.
I like playing korea a lot but I have some idea I might like to play the turks for a change.
I think fosse is quite keen on playing hannibal however first come first served and you chose first.
The great apple has signed up for a random civ .. would be quite amusing if that random civ turned out to be elizebeth or hyan pac .. (another financial?!)
Fosse Aug 06, 2006, 08:01 PM Not to be a stinker, but two players above laid claims to two civs, saying X or Y. Lawrence said Hannibal or Cyrus, and I chose one of those because it's my first choice. If that's no good, I'll pick again, but I wasn't ignoring anything.
:) It's no biggie, just explaining why I made that choice.

OK .. Not to worry.. I asked players for their first and second choice civ. When TElaw.. said hannibal or cyrus I made the assumption that the first civ he mentioned was his first preference and the second civ was his alternate..
Assuming TELawence wants to hang on to hannibal who would you like to play?
Fosse Aug 06, 2006, 08:55 PM Lol. you're right. I didn't notice you said 1st and 2nd. Very well. My First choice is Hannibal, my Second choice is for (you're going to love this): Cyrus. No joke. ;) Lawrence, you get to pick for both of us by virtue of having posted first. ;)
Fosse Aug 06, 2006, 08:58 PM Regarding Epic... I'm not in favor of playing an Epic game. Power sessions can still yield lengthy games. Also, today's Edit also changes the Power session from initial to regular. This may represent a signifigant change for many players. Though I can probably do the Wednesday slot regularly, it may not be the case for everyone. We know first hand how tough it can be to coordinate a group's schedule after they have been formed. :)

I intended from the beginning that power sessions would occur every wednesday (except when on occasion one or more players cannot make it.) I see that I did not make that very clear though. I want this game to proceed at a snappy pace from beginning to end.
I thought that, given regular power sessions, even on epic the game should finish months (even years!) ahead of a 1 turn per day deal :crazyeye: set to normal or quicker...
BTW (to all players) no one has stated a map type pref except for one. As it stands then we will have a fractal map.
brotherlone Aug 06, 2006, 09:44 PM im ready to be commited to a PB game , my choice of leader is Tokugawa
please do notify me at seanysl@hotmail.com
regards
Fosse Aug 06, 2006, 09:48 PM Fractal is fine for me. We'll need to set a "quorum" decision about future sessions, I think. Hopefully 100% of us can do 100% of Wednesdays, but that's not a realistic expectation. Some people will have to have the AI, or a sub, play for them some sessions. It's also worth drawing up rules for interacting with a player's civ who is under AI control at the time.
I like Fractal maps.
Xerol Aug 06, 2006, 09:55 PM For anyone wondering, that's 3-6PM Eastern time, or noon-3pm Pacific. Which is a little early for me, considering once fall semester starts I'll be getting home on wednesdays around 3:45 Eastern.
CB Droege Aug 06, 2006, 09:59 PM Man, I would love to join you guys, but the sessions are righ in my work day. maybe next time... :)
Rael Aug 07, 2006, 02:55 AM I'm fine with Fractal map as long as resources are Balanced
zenspiderz Aug 07, 2006, 04:27 AM For anyone wondering, that's 3-6PM Eastern time, or noon-3pm Pacific. Which is a little early for me, considering once fall semester starts I'll be getting home on wednesdays around 3:45 Eastern.
Sorry you can't make it. I should clarify that what I meant by 7 to 10 pm GMT was actually 7-10 BST (british summer time) which is 1 hour ahead of GMT.
In other words 8 - 11 GMT. The Thread header has been updated to that effect.
Kaizu Aug 07, 2006, 07:16 AM I would like to join too. This would be my first time with Pitboss, but it looks pretty simple.
My first pick for a leader/civ would be Churchill/England and if it's taken, then Augustus/Rome.
Cheers,
-Kaizu
Fosse Aug 07, 2006, 07:49 AM I personally dislike "balanced" maps. It's much less exciting when everybody has everything they might need for an entire age, and there is no point in trading or adapting to the situation. My vote stays Fractal, Standard resource.
zenspiderz Aug 07, 2006, 08:21 AM We have 8 players now. I still need The Great Apple and Kaisu to PM me their email addresses for game communications.
There is room enough for 2-3 more I believe. Recruiting for the game will close tomorrow night.
TELawrence do you still want Hannibal?
Has everyone downloaded and set up hamachi vpn software?
The Great Apple Aug 07, 2006, 11:07 AM I don't mind about map type. I usaully play shuffle, but fractal is good.
As for game speed I have about 2 months before I have to go back to uni, where I am unlikely to have a computer. I'm not sure how long this sort of game takes - I would think it would be alright.
I'll set up Hamachi later tonight.
TELawrence Aug 07, 2006, 01:09 PM Yeah, I'll stick with Hannibal, if that's OK.
Fosse Aug 07, 2006, 01:10 PM Cyrus for me.
zenspiderz Aug 07, 2006, 01:44 PM Our first session this wednesday will be a test of the hamachi vpn connection method. Hopefully all will go well and we can proceed directly into the game proper.
Fosse Aug 07, 2006, 02:35 PM Would it be possible for you to start the host early (tonight or tomorrow) so those of us who already have hamachi can try to connect to the server by the LAN method? If so, it might save us a headache or two (like the many when I tried to launch my session game a few weeks ago!).
:)
The Great Apple Aug 07, 2006, 03:23 PM I think an early test run would probably be a good idea.
zenspiderz Aug 08, 2006, 05:28 AM Ok this evening at 8 o'clock I will set up a test game. I will send connection details by email. Any player that are available at that time can then try to connect. Fingers crossed all will be well.
Kaizu Aug 08, 2006, 05:32 AM I'll try to join tonight for test session. Are we starting 8 o'clock PM or GMT?
Anyway, my timezone is GMT+2, so it's prolly late enough for wife and kid to be sound asleep by then by then :)
Zen, did you get my email address?
-Kaizu
Fosse Aug 08, 2006, 10:02 AM Work has just pulled a fast one on me. I'm going to be unable to be at tomorrow's session. Sorry Zen, but I'll have to bow out of this one.
:(
zenspiderz Aug 08, 2006, 02:42 PM The test game went well enough (thanks to kaisu and TGA for helping me test). However there are a couple of technical issues I need to address before the game proper can go live.
Also we have had two players bow out, Fosse and Mickyj.
Xerol Aug 08, 2006, 07:16 PM Would a "team" be possible to enter? I'd be able to play if someone were able to play some of "our" powersessions. Turns out I don't have any classes on wednesdays, but I may not be home every third week due to work.

I am not sure what you mean.. if you mean can you and a friend share control of a civ then I guess I have no problem with that. Although it might cause some confusion.
Which civ do you want?
The game proper will be starting tonight 8pm BST.
Fosse Aug 09, 2006, 09:17 AM Did I say work was unpredictable?
Because it is!
I'm back on board!
zenspiderz Aug 09, 2006, 09:25 AM Did I say work was unpredictable?
Because it is!
I'm back on board!
Unpredictable? What do they do throw dice?
Anyway welcome back. I'll send you the email I sent the others for tonights game.
The Great Apple Aug 09, 2006, 01:04 PM For anybody not paying attention. 8PM is right now. In fact - it's 5 minutes ago.
Kaizu Aug 09, 2006, 02:25 PM Friggin' timezones, I tried to join one hour too late. Oh well, that's it for me then.
-Kaizu
Fosse Aug 09, 2006, 03:06 PM Sorry Kaizu. :(
That was fun though, gang. Same time next week?
The Great Apple Aug 09, 2006, 03:11 PM Also sorry. I turned up an hour early instead. Does anybody happen to know what turn we finished on?
Are we going to start an hour earlier (as the first posts says) next week?
Was enjoyable. Just approaching a good bit when we had to pack it up. Looking forward to next week :)
zenspiderz Aug 09, 2006, 03:24 PM oh poor kaizu .. is it just me or could we restart nest week to include kaizu and anyother players that might want in...
Was lots of fun although it was late in the session that i encounterd another civ.
i jhave finshed the fisrtand seconed bleottle of wind bht i dont thick it is effecting me yeat
Fosse Aug 09, 2006, 05:59 PM Zen, here's the link to the fix for Pitboss under Warlords. If you download that you should be in good shape for hosting new warlords games, or turning the one we started today into a Pitboss.

brotherlone Aug 09, 2006, 09:47 PM sorry guys i guess i missed the first session... i deleted zen's initial mail thinking that it was a spam
ive got myself connected to the network... and may i ask.. how long does a session last ?
Rael Aug 10, 2006, 01:25 AM is it just me or could we restart nest week to include kaizu and anyother players that might want in...
I wouldn't mind if we restarted the game (probably because I'm surrounded by jungle, have no copper nor iron within 20 tiles from my capital and I'm at war with the strongest civ;) ). But I can continue playing because it's getting quite interesting. So it's really up to you
Kaizu Aug 10, 2006, 01:26 AM Please, don't restart if there's no other reason than me getting to join. I will have plenty of opportunities later on.
Then again, I would be very happy if you would find a reason to restart anyhow :)
-Kaizu
zenspiderz Aug 10, 2006, 12:59 PM Last night's game went well I think we can all agree. Hamachi sorted the usual firewall issues so that those that made it were able to enjoy a fast paced multiplayer without the a nightmare of techical issues. Unfortunatly two players did not make it for one reason or another.
I would like to give them a chance to jump in but we did not set any AI for them to take over... Which means if kaizu and brother lone wants to join in next week we will need to restart.
Myself I am ok with this so I will say unless at least one of the existing players objects we will restart the game.. and kaizu and brotherlone can join in on the next game after this one finishes if they like.
ok?
zen
The Great Apple Aug 10, 2006, 02:24 PM I'd rather not restart. It's beginning to get interesting.
Having said that, I did rather botch up my start. Lukily I did get a pretty good starting location, so it evens out :p. I'll have to think about it :p
BTW - I'm still quite confused about the times we are meant to be playing. Is it 7-10PM BST, or 8-11PM BST. Also, pitboss doesn't appear to be running.
zenspiderz Aug 10, 2006, 04:44 PM BTW - I'm still quite confused about the times we are meant to be playing. Is it 7-10PM BST, or 8-11PM BST. Also, pitboss doesn't appear to be running.
7-10 BST which is 8-11 GMT .. I know why you are confused last night we started at 8 BST ..
pitboss isn't running yet .. the game we started last night wasn't a pitboss game. I have heard that it can be converted but i haven't done gotten around to tracking down the utility that does it.
I didn't think it is very important since in the 6 days between sessions only 6 turns can be played.. In a power session the same number of turns can be played in just 10 minutes or so.
The Great Apple Aug 10, 2006, 04:52 PM Yeah, but I like to be able to pop on a scheme evilly
EDIT: But it's probably to much of a pain for you, so I wouldn't bother if I were you :p

That's good to know since I intend on using Hamachi for the next pitboss game I host (if there is one). Did you run it as a pitboss game straight from the beginning or did you have it as a LAN game/direct IP game for the accelerated start and then convert it to a pitboss game later?
Zilch Aug 11, 2006, 07:29 AM I would like to join you in your next game or if you restart.
Wednesdays are great with me as my wife goes out so I get a night of no interuptions :)

Did you run it as a pitboss game straight from the beginning or did you have it as a LAN game/direct IP game for the accelerated start and then convert it to a pitboss game later?
Due to difficulties I had with the pitboss program and warlords we did not use for the first session. Nor did lan game set up work .. but directip worked very well.
the oob Aug 11, 2006, 06:59 PM Due to difficulties I had with the pitboss program and warlords we did not use for the first session. Nor did lan game set up work .. but directip worked very well.
Ok, so direct ip over hamachi... what did you have the players type into the ip box to connect... the computer's name, internal (local) IP, or external IP? And you were able to convert a direct ip game to pitboss without problems?
TELawrence Aug 12, 2006, 12:27 AM Well I'm all in favour of restarting being under attack from two fronts and in severe danger of taking an early bath... but I guess I might be biased. If it came to a vote I'd vote to restart!
Frulling Aug 12, 2006, 05:16 AM I’m also interesting in joining if possible I want to be Gandhi of the Indian Empire ore Hatshepsut of the Egyptian Empire. I never played on pitboss before but their shod be no problems. My email i frulling@hotmail.com and I have msn.
zenspiderz Aug 13, 2006, 12:10 AM Ok, so direct ip over hamachi... what did you have the players type into the ip box to connect... the computer's name, internal (local) IP, or external IP? And you were able to convert a direct ip game to pitboss without problems?
Other players type the host's hamachi network address into their directip box.
I haven't converted the direct ip game to pitboss yet although I have heard it is possible.
Fosse Aug 13, 2006, 11:27 AM You don't even have to convert anything. Just open Pitboss and load the save. It's the easiest thing in the world. :)
I can't wait to stress test hamachi with 10 or so players. It seems that each player you add makes it way more difficult to get 100% trouble free connections. Zen, am I right that you couldn't get Civ to broadcast as a LAN game? If so, I'd love to figure out why that was.
But the IP connection was flawless, and the game was fun (even if I didn't meet anyone until nearly the end).
Ranbir Aug 13, 2006, 12:05 PM I'm game. I'd like America, Roosevelt. If still open.
The Great Apple Aug 13, 2006, 04:22 PM Hamachi and computer security:
It would seem that if I log on with Hamachi, all of you guys have access to my computer's files, it being a virtual lan. I'm not entirely happy with this. Is there any way around this anybody knows of?
Fosse Aug 13, 2006, 05:44 PM hamachi has settings that don't allow this, and plus you can have Windows configure your "LAN" to not allow the sharing of files. I don't know too much about networks, but in part of the Hamachi setup it addresses this concern.
Fosse Aug 15, 2006, 04:50 PM Are we on tomorrow? What's the deal with continuing, starting over? Who can and who cannot join tomorrow at the same time as last week?
zenspiderz Aug 15, 2006, 05:33 PM Are we on tomorrow? What's the deal with continuing, starting over? Who can and who cannot join tomorrow at the same time as last week?
I say we continue as before.. If anyone already on the game can't make it then I will hand them over to the AI unless they inform me in good time so that I can inform other players they can do something else that night.
How is that?
Rael Aug 16, 2006, 02:01 AM I'll be in game tonight. Do we start at 8 BST like last time or at 7 BST as it was originally planned?
zenspiderz Aug 16, 2006, 05:56 AM Yeah better make it 7 BST.
See you then.
TELawrence Aug 16, 2006, 11:38 AM Well I'm here now and ready whatever... seems like I'm going to get a drubbing though.
jonpfl Aug 16, 2006, 01:05 PM If any of you guys want to join up in a team game I have going that needs a replacement player, let me know
We have 3 teams of 2 players each.
Thx
jonpfl
Fosse Aug 16, 2006, 02:32 PM For my own future reference, BST 7:00 PM is CST 1:00.
I'm confused, because CST is currently GMT -5, and everyone was saying that 7:00 BST is 8:00 GMT... so I'm confused.
But GTZ (Game Time Zone) means 1:00 for me. That's all that matters.
Good session, everyone. See you next week.
TELawrence Aug 16, 2006, 03:08 PM This was a good session - though our continent is pretty vicious.
zenspiderz Aug 17, 2006, 08:37 AM This was a good session - though our continent is pretty vicious.
Seems so .. I love to be able to see it..
It seems every few turns a great general is being spawned over your way.
So far I think I have killed no more than 2 barbarians... And lost nothing.
TELawrence Aug 18, 2006, 01:22 PM Next week I'm going to be on holiday.
My suggestion is that we postpone the session from Wednesday to Sunday (27 August) but appreciate that it's difficult for everyone to find the same time. Nevertheless I'm loathe to hand over to the AI as I just know it's going to make all the wrong decisions for me and found cities in the desert or something...
Fosse Aug 18, 2006, 11:26 PM No chance in the world I can make Sunday. There are a number of people who would probably be willing to play the civ for you though, Lawrence, as a sub for the session. If the game moves to Sunday, someone will have to play for me.
zenspiderz Aug 20, 2006, 12:19 AM I can't do Sunday either.
I say we pass on next weds game and continue the wednesday after that. ok?
I hope all can make it then.
The Great Apple Aug 20, 2006, 03:11 AM Hmm. Things are looking bad. As mentioned previously I'm heading off to uni where I probably won't have my computer in early October. This gives us about 5 more sessions, and I doubt that'll be enough time.
Then again... there might be. We'll see I supose.
Fosse Aug 20, 2006, 09:08 AM Wouldn't it be better to find a sub for this Wednesday? Or is TELawrence not the only person who won't make it?
It's not going to be uncommon, I think (or unreasonable), for one of us to have to miss a session every few weeks. If we just cancel each session instead of looking for a sub we might never get to the end of the games.
zenspiderz Aug 21, 2006, 09:06 AM Just today BT (BritishTelecom) has blocked a service that carries the internet for my ISP meaning at the moment I cannot connect to the internet from home. Until this resolved I cannot play or host our game. Sorry Fosse but that is another reason for not playing this wednesday.
Fosse Aug 21, 2006, 12:56 PM Lol. The host being kicked of fthe internet is a pretty good reason to postpone.
Lord Parkin Aug 23, 2006, 04:40 AM If any of you ever need a temporary replacement for a week though, I'm happy to fill in for whoever. Just give me a quick message beforehand to let me know what your rough intentions are so I can carry on in the way you wanted.
I know I may not be needed at all, but thought I'd volunteer my services anyway just in case. :)
The Great Apple Aug 23, 2006, 06:59 AM Just to confirm - we are definately not having a session tonight?
zenspiderz Aug 24, 2006, 08:08 AM Just to confirm - we are definately not having a session tonight?
That's right. I may not be able to host for a week or more as BT are being REAL a*******S over their dispute with my ISP. I can't even change ISP's to get the line working. Damn commies!!!
TELawrence Aug 26, 2006, 07:38 AM Well I'm back.
Could I just ask - what is required in order to host a pitboss game. I would be willing to host it for a week or so if I could do so fairly easily...
The Great Apple Aug 26, 2006, 07:53 AM You have to download the pitboss patch, and you should be able to load up the game (I don't know if it needs converting). Then you just have to leave yourself logged onto the internet (& Hamachi) with the program running.
TELawrence Aug 26, 2006, 12:54 PM OK - I'm waiting to hear from zenspiderz, but if he's still having problems then I could take over this week.
The Great Apple Aug 29, 2006, 02:40 PM Anybody know what's happening tomorrow?
Fosse Aug 29, 2006, 03:56 PM I am unfortunatly not going to be able to play. I surrender my Civ to any altnerate who would be able to play my part. I'm in an interesting position, so maybe I can tempt somebody to take over for me.
Lord Parkin Aug 29, 2006, 05:46 PM Hmm, well if the game's still on then I'd be interested in switching with Fosse's place for a week. From 7pm GMT, right? I think that's 6am onwards local NZ time, but I should hopefully be able to manage that. It'd sure be worth the early start for the fun of a good Pitboss session. :)
Fosse Aug 29, 2006, 11:56 PM If it's on, I"ll definatly PM Lord Parkin my password.
The Great Apple Aug 30, 2006, 11:56 AM Errr. Anybody know what's going on? I'm online, but nobody else is.
TELawrence Aug 30, 2006, 12:00 PM No idea. I presume this means that zen is now offline for the forseeable future. I suggest we shrug our shoulders, and keep checking back - or at least let people know if they plan to drop out.
TELawrence Sep 12, 2006, 02:57 PM Could someone update us on the latest developments here?
The Great Apple Sep 12, 2006, 03:00 PM I'd quite like to know as well. I was having fun!
Fosse Sep 12, 2006, 05:30 PM As far as I can tell, Zen has vanished. :(
zenspiderz Sep 28, 2006, 11:01 AM Zen returns!!!
After too long in the sans-internet wilderness I have finally been allowed to return from my exile.
We can resume play as before. Just let me know if you still can/want to play.
TELawrence Oct 01, 2006, 09:10 AM Yes I'm still here - suggest you start PMing other players though.

Fosse Oct 01, 2006, 07:11 PM I'm still around and potentially interested. My weeks are a bit more sporadic than they were before because it's my busy season, but if you set up a schedule I can try.
