View Full Version : C-IV SGOTM 1 - Results and Congratulations
AlanH Aug 09, 2006, 03:11 AM SGOTM 1 - Results and Congratulations.
No fewer than 140 players in 19 teams signed up to play the first SGOTM for Civ4. Congratulations to all who took part, and thank you for making it a very interesting competition.
For the first game in this new format, Gyathaar set a fairly straightforward map, and you, playing as Egypt, were required to achieve a fast Domination or Diplomatic victory. A little spice was added in the form of a locked state of hostility between Egypt and the Incas, and a locked state of peace with India.
A couple of teams discovered that the locked state of peace with India could be flipped into a locked state of war by declaring war on India's ally. All the team threads and spoilers make very enjoyable and instructive reading, but it is particularly worth reading the Rat Pack's turn log for a demonstration on how to wrest victory from the jaws of defeat following this unexpected turnaround.
As expected, the fastest victories went to the Dominators, but the third place went to a Diplomatic team, and six other diplomatic wins were achieved, including a *very* late run completed today by madviking. Only one team was unable to finish in time for the results publication, and one team suffered a diplomatic defeat.
In view of the high turn-out for this game we decided to award gold, silver and bronze laurels to the fastest three teams, as well as the traditional wooden cutlery set to the lowest scoring finishers. The race for first and second places was very closely fought, with Peanut just reaching the tape ahead of CFR. The Geezers delivered the fastest Diplomatic victory to take third place.
So, to the victors the spoils ....

Full results and stats are available here ( http://gotm.civfanatics.net/submit/civ4sgotm_submission_list.php?game=50001&displayteams=displayteams). I will try to extract some more statistics and add them to to the graphs over the next few days.
GreyFox Aug 09, 2006, 03:57 AM Congrats to Peanuts, CFR, and Geezers!!! Nicely done!
 I thought to qualify for wooden spoons, you need to win as well. :crazyeye: But Rex and gang need no consolation ... they are probably pretty proud of walking away with a medal

Niklas Aug 09, 2006, 04:00 AM Congratulations to the winners! :goodjob: :hatsoff:
A special congratulations to Team Geezers for the fastest Diplomatic win! Impressive! :worship:
Also a huge thank you to the organizers, we had a blast! :thanx:
@AlanH: You might want to take the 'staff' part out of the link to the full results... ;)
Ozbenno Aug 09, 2006, 04:25 AM :goodjob: to the winners and a big :thanx: to organisers. I enjoyed taking part in this immensely.
Strauss Aug 09, 2006, 04:45 AM Congratulations to the winners:beer:! And thanks to the organizers, it was very fun to participate!
And I now see why Rex, pholk and Imhotep have turned against competitiveness in CivIV:lol:.
What I find remarkable is that the three winning teams consisted of only a few players who are active in regular CivIV SG's.

Sorry :( Posted them as I rushed out of the door.
Tatran Aug 09, 2006, 04:57 AM Congratulations to the winners. :goodjob:
The competition could use a re-shape.
Knowing early you can't beat other teams
isn't very excited.
leif erikson Aug 09, 2006, 05:33 AM Congratulations to the Peanuts!! :goodjob: :goodjob:
And to everyone else for their efforts. Some really  games to read about.
It was a lot of fun and a lot of learning. Thanks to The Staff for their efforts on our behalf.
radiopill Aug 09, 2006, 06:15 AM Congratulation to the Peanut  for this impressive and fast victory. :goodjob:

Kikinit Aug 09, 2006, 07:39 AM Congratulations Peanut and haha to the Queen's Men...
And I've got to join the chorus of thankyou's to the staff.
markh Aug 09, 2006, 07:47 AM Congratulations to the Peanuts and CFR.:goodjob:
And special thanks to Team Smurkz for making it very exciting to follow whether you would beat us.
And of course a big :thanx: to the organizers.
ruff_hi Aug 09, 2006, 07:55 AM Well done to everyone! And a big thanks to the organizers. I am happy to see the Chaos team (we decided against playing chaotically, went with reporting chaotically instead) was in the top 10! I will now go back to that trash talking thread and compare results with a few people (you know who you are!).
Pet Aug 09, 2006, 08:49 AM Congratulations to the Peanuts! It was very exciting to look for your finish as our guys (from civfanatics.ru) prognosed that you can beat us by a negligible margin. :)
And, of course, URA! to the CFR team! :goodjob: Don't stop on this and win the main laurels!;)
Kodii Aug 09, 2006, 10:08 AM Congratulations to all the teams. I'd say that this was a successful first Civ4 SGOTM. Perhaps there should be an announcement of the winners on the main CivFanatics News page? :)

There will be tonight when I get home from work.
blid Aug 09, 2006, 11:20 AM Congrats to all the winners. Peanuts and CFR dates are impressive. I am glad that geezers managed to get a laurel with a diplomatic victory. That was awesome guys
Would join the crowd here and thank the staff for all the good work :thanx:
Greebley Aug 09, 2006, 02:43 PM I was trying to look at some of the other settings like total number of cities and noticed they were all zero. Is this still work in progress or a bug?

I will try to extract some more statistics and add them to to the graphs over the next few days.
The menu is a left-over from the Civ3 SGOTM page. I have to work out which of the parameters I can extract, recover them from 666 files (yes, 666, really!), and get them into the database for graphical display on the page.
ThERat Aug 09, 2006, 05:02 PM congrats to the winners of the competition :goodjob:
Zalson Aug 09, 2006, 05:06 PM Congratulations Queen's Men! We all knew you could... Oh wait... Congratulations to Team Peanut!
wioneo Aug 09, 2006, 05:37 PM Couldn't you lose with the lowest score by sending your initial settler out to find an animal(or just deleting it)?
AlanH Aug 09, 2006, 05:45 PM Couldn't you lose with the lowest score by sending your initial settler out to find an animal(or just deleting it)?
Yeees .. but I decide who gets the awards :p
Mad Professor Aug 09, 2006, 06:05 PM I'll ad my voice to the chorus of congrats to the laurel winners - those three are all very impressive results - and in thanks to the staff.
My own game skills improved HUGELY during the time I was playing SGOTM1. It's a great idea for that, and to top it, heaps of fun!
Thunderfall Aug 09, 2006, 06:32 PM Congratulations to the winning teams, and thanks to the GOTM staff for their hard work.
Qwack Aug 09, 2006, 06:48 PM Congratulations Queen's Men! We all knew you could...
Damn right. We told you all we would win. :)
wioneo Aug 09, 2006, 09:20 PM I always miss these! I should pay closer attention...
knupp715 Aug 09, 2006, 10:37 PM Congrats all.
Marc Aurel Aug 10, 2006, 03:14 AM Congrats to Peanut and CFR who really earned the laurels by two very well managed domination victories!:goodjob:
There is quite something to learn from your threads.
And a special congrats to the Geezers who managed to grab a laurel with a diplomatic win! Quite impressive.
1:0 for you!
And a huuuuge thank you to the organizers. Long cive AlanH and Gyathaar!
:thanx:
bshumbera Aug 10, 2006, 06:20 AM Couldn't you lose with the lowest score by sending your initial settler out to find an animal(or just deleting it)?
Shhh... you can't post our strategy outside of the team forums :king:.
Harok Aug 10, 2006, 03:31 PM Congrats to the winners, you all played great games.:goodjob:
Thanks to the staff for their hard work.:worship:
AlanH Aug 10, 2006, 09:57 PM I've updated the results page to show graphs of some additional parameters.
For each team you can now see food, hammers and commerce produced per turn, plus territory and cities, plotted against the date/turn axis.
DaviddesJ Aug 10, 2006, 10:07 PM For each team you can now see food, hammers and commerce produced per turn, plus territory and cities, plotted against the date/turn axis.
It seems to be counting only the number of cities founded, not the number of cities controlled?
AlanH Aug 11, 2006, 04:24 AM The software that does it is not mine, but I did have a look through it to check that it appeared to do what I wanted. It does actually scan the event log and look for changes of ownership as well as new founded cities. It's quite complicated, but I'll try to investigate further.
[Update]
Ahah! I think the city count I'm displaying is for the turn before, because there are no events logged for the turn of the save. I'll see if I can find a way to extract more up to date information.
DaviddesJ Aug 11, 2006, 09:08 AM Ahah! I think the city count I'm displaying is for the turn before, because there are no events logged for the turn of the save. I'll see if I can find a way to extract more up to date information.
The problem seems deeper than that. E.g., it shows Team Peanut with 9 cities at our next-to-last save (1268 AD). We actually had 30. It's not off by just one turn.
It seems like it should be easier to count cities just by counting the cities than by tracking the event history. But, I understand, you didn't write the code.
AlanH Aug 11, 2006, 09:40 AM I'm modifying the code now to get the city count more directly. It'll take a little time, but I'm getting there.
AlanH Aug 13, 2006, 12:06 PM UPDATE: I've replaced the Territory and Cities count with what I believe are accurate figures from the saves. I've also added Population, Gold and Net GPT graphs. Please let me know whether these all look reasonable.
DaviddesJ Aug 13, 2006, 01:19 PM "Cities" and "Population" look reasonable.
So does "Food per turn".
The "Commerce per turn" is sometimes negative. That seems odd.
AlanH Aug 13, 2006, 02:23 PM Commerce per turn certainly goes negative in some cases. It comes straight out of the Histograph data recorded in the save, and while the absolute values may be a turn adrift, it looks a lot like the shape of the GNP curve in the Info Screen.
Here are the Progress Page and in-game versions of the Peanut GNP (yellow is in-game GNP):
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/Peanut_Game_GNP.jpg
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/Peanut_Web_GNP.jpg
I've updated the caption for the new GPT value I added, having established that it's the Foreign GPT, which may be a net income or a net expense. I've also clarified the above value, now captioned 'GNP'.
DaviddesJ Aug 13, 2006, 02:30 PM I see. "Commerce per turn" is raw commerce, minus expenses. What the game calls GNP. Not very useful, but I understand it now.
AlanH Aug 13, 2006, 02:52 PM What would you prefer to see? I can rummage around in the save file and see if there's a better number if I know what you're looking for.
Lexad Aug 14, 2006, 10:07 AM I think you\ve done much for us already :)
Congrats to all and thanx to organizers! Let's see how Peanuts' "stay behind" tactics will help them this SGOTM ;)
civ_steve Aug 14, 2006, 01:01 PM We just enjoy our SGOTM experience and take our time to savor it! :coffee: (Oh, is it time for another SGOTM?) :D
Congrats to Team CFR for turning in a great Domination date; the competition was fierce and I expect will be fiercer still for SGOTM2. :goodjob: to Team Geezers for an awesome Diplomacy date!
Thanks to my team mates on Team Peanut - through good discussion you kept things on track for a good result!
Many thanks to the staff that prepare and administer the SGOTM! And  to all the participants and teams - it couldn't be a good, successful competion without you!
Till Aug 14, 2006, 02:04 PM Cogratulations to the the winners and a big thank you to the staff for organizing this tournament! It certainly adds to the Civ4 experience. :)
