Hi, Just curious if there was anyway to run Civ III on the Macintosh without the CD needing to be in the Drive like you could do with Civ II. I'm hoping to improve the performance of the game by running it off of my hard drive. Thanks

Yes. It is very possible.

Ever since I lost my Colonization CD to a rambunctious niece with a set of car keys in her hands (she was only 2 and too cute to kill) I have adopted the strategy of making disk images and mounting them, and keeping the original CDs locked away from small crumb crushers and carpet pirates.

Just make sure you've got enough disk space (650 MB) to save the disk image.

Hi,

FYI: if you do a full install of the game, you only need the CD to start up Civ III.
Any (very small) disk image with the same name as the CD volume will do the trick, and let you open the game. To automate this, I wrote a little Applescript that opens (and thereby mounts) a 500K diskimage, and then opens the Civ III app.
This way I can run Civ III very quickly with a dubbelclick, without first waiting on the CD ROM to mount.

regards, Finne

PS: I only tried all this in OS X.

How would one make a disk image? I'm on a iMac 8.6 system.

dojoboy,

use the programme "Disk Copy". It is part of your system installation, so it should be on your hard drive. Otherwise you will find it on your system CD.

Run the programme, then open the menu "Image" and select "create new image" (if that is the correct name, I am using a foreign language OS...).

Next, create a 1.4 MB Disk (make sure it is in Mac format) and name it "Civilization III.img". Just follow the instructions, and you will have a nice, compact disk image that will allow you to run Civ III without the CD, as long as you have a full installation.

It works fabulous.

AK

AK --- I got to the window and named it; however, I didn't know where to go from there. It appeared the only option I was given was "cancel." Other than reading the window, there were no other instructions to create the image. I guess what I'm asking is how do I complete the program?

If you've done a full install, you won't improve the performance at all.

Help! My CD CRACKED (about 1" from the center hole out). What is the name of the CD volume? I did a full install so that should do the job.

Just tried it. "Civilization III" worked just fine. Thanks finne!
