ainwood Aug 13, 2006, 04:34 AM Well, certainly looks interesting! Persia is my favorite civ - and the starting location looks fairly generous (unless there's no iron). But I'll be playing this one.
Kulko Aug 13, 2006, 04:40 AM A strong Civ, a settler factory provided basically free of charge, start on a river.
So what is the hook? And what is still left for pregame discussion?
Maybe the following question. When you want to go for 20K, would you go in you capital (I think this location has tremendous potential) or play the Factory here and build your wonders somewhere else?
Looks like I gotta lose the demigod game fast, so I can play this too.
Wardancer Aug 13, 2006, 05:15 AM Well, certainly looks interesting! Persia is my favorite civ - and the starting location looks fairly generous (unless there's no iron). But I'll be playing this one.
Of course there won't be any easily attainable iron. The only iron on our starting continent will be under Athens, which will be on a hill.... :)
I think it will be archers for me. Even if they aren't required for securing iron they will be useful for hunting those barb camps.
classical_hero Aug 13, 2006, 07:26 AM Perhaps this will mean that we will need to find our source of Horses quickly and control them, since I doubt that Iron will be easily available.
Ansar Aug 13, 2006, 07:47 AM Oh no...my eye twitch is back... :twitch: too good of a starting position for a GOTM... :twitch: :p
azzaman333 Aug 13, 2006, 08:34 AM My 2 cents;
We will have iron, but will be on an isolated island.
Kulko Aug 13, 2006, 08:51 AM I could live with that. Build a nice power base and then land with an immortal rush on the mainland. They will wish, it was only Attila the Hun visiting them.
azzaman333 Aug 13, 2006, 08:56 AM I could live with that. Build a nice power base and then land with an immortal rush on the mainland. They will wish, it was only Attila the Hun visiting them.
Can you live with the terrible land that we will get?
Ansar Aug 13, 2006, 10:09 AM It does seem fishy... look at the minimap. We are in the SW corner of the world... :scan:
Kulko Aug 13, 2006, 10:51 AM Well What do you expect. GOTM are supposed to be challenging. But if you look at this island its at least 24-25 tiles big, all nice an fertile, even wih a river.
Listen, I do not believe the island theory much, but if we are on a island with Iron, given what we see so far, I think we will manage.
ionimplant Aug 13, 2006, 12:46 PM Maybe the following question. When you want to go for 20K, would you go in you capital (I think this location has tremendous potential) or play the Factory here and build your wonders somewhere else?
and how much do you rely on leader-fishing or brick-by-brick building?
Pił Freddo Aug 13, 2006, 02:10 PM what is still left for pregame discussion?
Well the Settler Factory has several options. Maybe not so much to discuss as to speculate about.
For a classical 4-6 pop, 6-8-7-9 shields Factory, there are the options to either mine one of the food resources or irrigate it and share it with another city. In the irrigated case we need two BGs, but only one is visible. Or is that a gray spot on the Cattle?
If one of the food resources has a bonus shield, and there are two more BGs in the outer part of the fat cross, we can also build a 4.75-6.75 pop, 4x10 shields Warrior+Settler Combo Factory.
LowtherCastle Aug 13, 2006, 02:35 PM Maybe it's just a good old, bust-arse free-for-all!!!
Vegasgustan Aug 13, 2006, 03:21 PM Anyone remember the GOTM where we were Greece up at the top of the world and no one else was around?
I'm thinking this may be like that one. I mean Emperor is not THAT hard of a level and the starting position is really nice.
What about...no iron, no horses, and isolated?
I guess we could put a warrior on every tile next to the ocean and never worry about being attacked and just go for 20k or 100k as fast as possible.:crazyeye:
Ansar Aug 13, 2006, 05:09 PM By looking at the starting position:
Is it possible to make a settler factory by irrigating the wheat, mining the cow, mining the BG, and mining some other tiles? (irrigate the cow if nearby BG's.)
Kulko Aug 13, 2006, 05:17 PM and how much do you rely on leader-fishing or brick-by-brick building?
Well given my eytraordinary bad look when it comes to leaders, lets assume, I build a lot by brick.
DBear Aug 13, 2006, 06:49 PM The island can't be that small, seeing as we have a river. Since this is emperor, I'll probably settle in place. If this were monarch or below I'd head upriver 2ne to allow a city on the river delta.
Since this is a young world, my bet is that we're on a peninsula, cut off from the rest of the continent by lotsa mountains.
Htadus Aug 13, 2006, 11:16 PM I am sad to say I will move 2 tiles. Probably away from the ocean to find room for my RCP4 cities and go for 20K with my second city near the ocean.
Or it will be a conquest and I will move one to east to get my RCP3 cities going.
There.... I am a coin toss away from a decision.:crazyeye:
Either case I think there will be no easy iron or horses. So it will have to be a archer/cat rush in the beginning.
justjohn Aug 14, 2006, 06:26 AM If one of the food resources has a bonus shield, and there are two more BGs in the outer part of the fat cross, we can also build a 4.75-6.75 pop, 4x10 shields Warrior+Settler Combo Factory.
No, if I'm not mistaken, on a small map the 10th shield in our capital is corrupt. Thus you would need another shield to get that Warrior ... :)

Niklas Aug 14, 2006, 07:46 AM With the last few games being extremely fast-played, conquest and domination challenges, I find myself wishing for something that lasts a bit longer this time. Would anyone be up for a Predator Diplomatic Challenge?
I haven't played a good science game since my SS win in the Aztec GOTM, what was that, 46? That's a year ago...
civ_steve Aug 14, 2006, 09:23 AM I've updated the First Post with the Conquest and Predator bonuses, and made one correction - its a 4 Billion Year map.
This is my first round with setting up a GOTM; hope I don't delete anyone's Worker by mistake! :D
King Of America Aug 14, 2006, 09:38 AM reading the Conquest-Class bonus tea leaves.
We aren't on an island--or at least we aren't alone
Pottery is pretty easily researched and would be a natural first to research, given all that food and at least one BG (no slingshot, so no need to learn Alpha first).
I think I'll go Open for a change on Emp. Let's see if I can get my first Open Emp. victory -- just gotta remember to pump 4-5 warriors/spears till my factory is ready.
crabsrntcool Aug 14, 2006, 11:56 AM Time for the first silly question of the day. Can you play the classics GOTM using the Conquest version, as that is the only version I have?
AlanH Aug 14, 2006, 12:09 PM Hi crabsrntcool :wavey:
If you have Conquests then you must have PtW. Conquests is an expansion pack and its prerequisite is a copy of Civ3. If you bought Civ3 Complete then you also have PtW.
No, you can't play Classic GOTM in Conquests. That's why we have two separate games each month.
Correction: Yes, you can play Classic GOTM in Conquests, but you can't submit your game.
crabsrntcool Aug 14, 2006, 12:45 PM Thanks for the quick response AlanH. That's kind of what I figured, but thought I would get a little confirmation.
King Of America Aug 14, 2006, 01:42 PM Any chance of having the game released at midnight Persian time?
civ_steve Aug 14, 2006, 02:15 PM I think its pretty automatic; you should have saves available around 9 AM on the 15th. :( On the plus side you can play well into the 2nd in your time zone! :)
Pił Freddo Aug 14, 2006, 02:15 PM Predator Diplomatic Challenge
That could be fun, since I've never ever in my life played a diplomatic game. What do I have to do to get them to vote for me?
King Of America Aug 14, 2006, 02:48 PM @civ_steve ...only if I survive that long! (it was worth a try to ask...)
@Piu Freddo...MPP with everyone but the 2nd biggest civ as you're finishing your pre-build, declare war in a way that #2 can't miss (empty border town), and you should be set when you build the UN (actually you only need to MPP with enough civs to win) -- if I remember correctly, if there's a 3rd civ with over 25% of the pop., it is also a candidate, which makes things tricky, but that is unusual/rare.
Ansar Aug 14, 2006, 03:02 PM Just be ahead and bribe everyone. :p Or is that an illegal exploit in GOTM/COTM? :scan:
azzaman333 Aug 14, 2006, 07:44 PM We are definately not alone in this world, with the AI's getting 2 extra offensive units on Predator. Probably close to Germany or another Militaristic civ, and either Greece or Carthage.
fat-mans-reveng Aug 14, 2006, 08:07 PM Thanks for the quick response AlanH. That's kind of what I figured, but thought I would get a little confirmation.
I ran into this problem recently, and was saddened when I found that I couldn't submit my game.
If you're running the game on windows, check your Civ 3 Complete program file for the Play the World folder, and that's where you can find the PTW.Exe icon. Double click, an you're set.
I don't see any reason why I shouldn't settle in place. I also think I'm going to take part in the predator diplomatic challenge. Diplomatic is how I always win games when moving up in difficulty, and I think it would be a good thing to go for here.
killercane Aug 14, 2006, 09:51 PM Predator handicaps here look weak compared to China Demigod handicaps, but we will have to see. Predator Diplomatic Challenge (PDC) sounds good to me.
classical_hero Aug 15, 2006, 09:11 AM Time for the first silly question of the day. Can you play the classics GOTM using the Conquest version, as that is the only version I have?
Conquests came with PTW. Had I known that, I would not have bothered buying PTW. [pissed]
TheDervish Aug 15, 2006, 11:09 AM This looks really interesting :)
Any chance of seeing this for Civ IV? (Civ IV is my only Civ game)
AlanH Aug 15, 2006, 12:19 PM Any chance of seeing this for Civ IV?
We run GOTMs for Civ3 PtW, Civ3 Conquests and Civ4. The current Civ4 game is GOTM 9, and next month we start them for Civ4 Warlords. Check out the Civ4 GOTM forum (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=165)
WackenOpenAir Aug 15, 2006, 01:04 PM I'm going 20k anyone with me ?
Edit: never mind, i quit already :)
simone76 Aug 15, 2006, 01:04 PM I've downloaded the save to start playing, but everytime I try to open it CIVIII says that there is a problem and shut down. Everything.
simone76 Aug 15, 2006, 01:16 PM Problem solved.
Let the fun begin.
Paul#42 Aug 15, 2006, 03:22 PM I'm going 20k anyone with me ?
Predator or Open?
Although I prefer 20k in C3C, I might be tempted again... :D
Yet in Ptw I do not like Shakespeares too much :(
I think I'd rather head for Diplomacy. Predator anyway.
I will decide after a few turns when it comes down to building a temple or a settler...
btw: How did you like Wacken this year? I saw lots of dutch cars heading for the festival on the autobahn. It's quite popular in Netherlands, right?
tR1cKy Aug 16, 2006, 08:49 AM The diplo challenge is tempting, but i don't know if i'll pick it. After the events who got me involved in game 57, i am left with some uh... thirst of blood
I'll start the game, then decide what to do after the basic research is done.
simone76 Aug 16, 2006, 10:16 AM I started playing last night for the first time.
Do I have to submit my saves everytime or only at the end of the game?
And how do you know if somebody is cheathing?
I've been tempted to reload after I lost two archers, but I didn't.

In these troubling times when pension firms steal your life savings, footballers dive to the ground in agony when anyone gets within 15 yards of them and devious types spread computer viruses the world over, CivFanatics is the last bastion of honour. It's where men are men, women are women, and transgender individuals are neither and we all play with a straight bat, stiff upper lip and stick it to all those sly types out to steal a march on their fellow man with acts of cowardly cunning. So join us and spurn all those who call for victory at all costs and you too can stand firm against the world in our desperate attempt to represent decency, peace, love and understanding.
And remember the Civ moderators are watching. Always. And everywhere.

Thank you for your answer.
I've always new that who play CIV is a better person than average :mischief: , I was only making sure.
But I still haven't had an answer to my first question.
Do I have to submit my saves everyday?
I've been looking on the forum for the rules on how to play GOTM, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.
AlanH Aug 16, 2006, 12:47 PM @Simone76: TaxpayersMoney has said it so much more elegantly than I possibly could. I'm sure you don't intend to cheat, so why do you need to know how we know if someone else is?
You just submit your final save. There are comprehensive instructions on the submission page, and there's a quick summary of the whole process here ( http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/1st_visit.php).
Oh, and you should only post in the official spoilers after you have started the game. :mischief:

Because, as TaxpayersMoney was saying, there is some nasty people in this world.

I knew that, I tryed to not say anything about the game.
Htadus Aug 16, 2006, 03:00 PM After reading all the entries, I decided to play Predator Domination + 20K culture + Diplomatic Challenge. Yes I am having trouble with me and myself on an agreement. We all want it our way :crazyeye: . So I will move one tile across the river and establish RCP3 and 7 cities. Good luck me and myself because I intend to win. :D
Marsden Aug 16, 2006, 03:49 PM says continents, but on 70% could look like archepelago. closest land mass will probably be at least across 3 or 4 ocean.
AlanH Aug 16, 2006, 03:49 PM ... there is some nasty people in this world
But not here, hey?
WackenOpenAir Aug 17, 2006, 09:42 AM Predator or Open?

I edited my post and quit the game within an hour of play.
Wacken was good as always. The weather was actually perfect. Not too warm, not too cold and some rain to keep the dust on the ground.
The only downside is the german police when you have a dutch licence plate. I have been checked for drugs 4 times this summer in germany. This gets rather rediculous.
Yes, it is popular in the netherlands, hopefully i partly caused this popularity. I am promoting Wacken for 8 years now :)
Beorn-eL-Feared Aug 25, 2006, 09:17 PM Been wishing to try the military way of doing 20K, this looks perfect for it.
