I don't get what's political about this.

In some places, roundabouts are being proposed.

In a nearby city where I live, there is one intersection that people try and avoid it by taking (and then speeding) on a side street (when they see the light is red as they are approaching that intersection). So, they take this side street for a couple of reasons: 1. They don't have to stop at the stop light, and 2. Hopefully beat any traffic. The residents complain of the speeding on the side street and think if there is a roundabout on that side street, nobody will go that route anymore. Or if they do, the roundabout will at least slow them down.

IMO, yes, it might slow them down, but then the people will simply drive even faster right before and right after the roundabout to make up time. Simpler solution would be to put a stop sign on that side street and put a police officer there every once in a while so people know that side street is being watched.

I don't get what this one's about, period.

Partly it is the "Roundabouts are the bane of all evil" attitude that Americans have towards the roundabouts. And another part of it is just plain silliness.

I wanted to post a political cartoon I saw in my paper the other day, but I can't find it on the web. This couple are sitting at home and watching the news on TV. On the TV the headlines reads something like this:

Wisconsin 2006 election
Marriage amendment
Death Penalty referendum
Negative political ads

The man watching the TV says to his wife: "Right now I'd be married to the idea of giving political ads the death penalty".

Anybody who has driven in the UK will know that roundabouts make perfect sense. We have three in Toronto (but only one is on a major street), traffic moves quite well in the areas around, whereas its a brutal standstill in the rest of the city.

In theory, they probably would work. They may even work when everybody knows what they are doing. This is what some of us think of when he hear "roundabout", "rotaries" or "traffic circle":

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/7936/traffic_circle.JPG

I really want to find a picture that Marla Singer posted a year or two ago that showed a really pathetic traffic jam, which was at a roundabout if I'm not mistaken. It looked something like this:

This is the wrong thread for a roundabout-discussion, but a few quick comments anyway:

In Germany we had no roundabouts at all until about 10 or so years ago, then suddenly they started being built everywhere, now we have thousands.... and they work very well indeed! Since I've been driving here for 27 years I have experience 'before' and 'after'.

From the pictures above, I can see where your problem is, though: our roundabouts are all at small or medium intersections and usually utilize only one lane in the roundabout, which works well. Those roundabouts you show are for large intersections with many lanes in the roundabout - no wonder you get chaos! No driver in the roundabout has a clue what to do, they'd obviously have to change lanes all the time... how is THAT supposed to work???
Your city planners should take another look at the principle and only use roundabouts where appropriate... THEN you'd love them!

My friend is chief traffic engineer for a city near here, and his roundabouts work pretty well. You're right, one-lane roundabouts really can be useful, and are appropriate in some cases.

For all of you who aren't Canadian, that's Belinda Stronach, Peter McKay and Jack Layton, Canadian MPs. Belinda is a Liberal and formerly a Conservative, McKay is a Conservative and Layton is the leader of the New Democrats (the social democrat party). McKay recently called Stronach a dog (for various reasons, partially because they were once an item), and Layton has, oddly, been the harshest critic of McKay for it.

Actually, it might not be too odd. The NDP came a close second in McKay's district last election.

The US's current strategy for achieving its aims in the Middle East rely on a vast oversimplification of the political realities of the Middle East.

Among the many explanations, it could also symbolize different ways of waging war.

[Wishful Thinking]I'm looking for a political cartoon circa 2003. It was an infant Saddam in diapers playing with blocks that read W,M & D while being sermonned bu Dubya who's ignoring Kim Jong Il standing on a huge bomb and making a loud ruckus. I'm sure one of you guys can pull the trick and find this great cartoon for me and everyone else to enjoy.[/Wishful Thinking]

McCain said we need more troops, but the voters want us out of Iraq completely (because they voted for democrats). So McCain is running in the wrong direction (by making his statement) if he wants to be president.
