LDiCesare has added a righteous Mediterranean option (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=149278&page=5) to his Tectonics map script (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=149278). It generates maps I'd say roughly in the style of the Desert War scenario. Check out the Tiny and Duel sizes.

One thing you notice on random maps is that dense forest is still treated as jungle for most purposes (latitude, spawning panthers, tropical resources.) Thamis, I'd be willing to fix that, and make any other non-graphical resource/terrain changes you'd like, if you told me what version to start from and roughly when you'd like it done. But regardless, let me again suggest that the spread rate of dense forest be drastically reduced so that its crippling effect is more controlled, especially on the huge Med map.

The map script sounds good.
Regarding the dense forests, I've already reduced them significantly in 1.96 on the huge map. If that's not enough, we can reduce their spread rate of course.
And if you're happy to work on that map script, feel free, that'd be awesome!

And if you're happy to work on that map script, feel free, that'd be awesome! Umm, the work I was referring to would be changes to the mod such as causing dense forests to be generated at colder latitudes, rather than changes to LDiCesare's Tectonics.py...

Oh, can you influence that in the XML? If that's possible, that'd be great!
