In order to make things a bit more interesting would it be possible to use two or three units to make two or three stronger ones? as in
1 war elephant + 1 longbowmen + 1 macemen = 3 medieval formations (strength 1 point higher than the highest unit put into the group - movement = to the slowest unit.

This idea reminds me of the Stack Aid promotions mod, basicaly the idea was have several units of a particular type (melle, recon, mounted) would give a temporary promotion to all units in the Stack.
