Both of you, look in the tutorials subforum further down the list. There are some excellent posts on putting additional units into the game.

hi.

thanks but ...

the tutorials look great if you can understand lots of techie jargon, all I want to know is how to install a single unit for now. Most of the tutorials I've seen after browsing for more than an hour and searching seem to be about making the units, not installing them.

I think thats what the others want to know as well, can anyone help?

Units arent "installed" in the traditional sense, where you press a button and it works.

You have to understand the "techie jargon" to get it to work (well not exactly, you just have to be able to read instructions and do it yourself.

Read the tutorial, and follow the instructions. You only have to chance a few files. Just make sure you make backups.

thanks a lot :) looks like its going to be a steep learning curve for me then!

I'll start by doing that and see how it goes. It's quite a big forum so it was a bit confusing but I'll get used to it.

is the process similar for new buildings? (I'm not going to do that yet until I see if the units work, but just for information?)

For the most part the process is the same.

In both cases you have to:

change the ArtDef XML so the game can identify the graphics.
change teh CLASSINFO XML
change the INFO XML
change the Formation or CityPlot XML
add the TXT entries for the description/pedia/strategy.

My advice is to just look at another unit (take warrior for example) and just see what code is needed for warrior and adapt it to whatever the new unit you want to import is. just make sure you spell everything right and the references match. 9 out of 10 errors I get is cause i spelled something wrong.

Good advice thanks. I got it working, suprisingly.

Now I have to try some others. :)

Am I right in thinking that a new unit would only show up in a new game or will it work in a previously saved one?

OK i tried to add a unit in my MOD but it came back with errors:
1. CIV4ARTDefines.Unit.xml
Reason: End Tag 'UnitArtInfo' does not match the start Tag.
Line 3283,5
2. ART/CIV4ArtDefines_misc.xml

Then it crashes.

@strategyonly - my guess is you made a small mistake somewhere by forgeting a line or something. Can you post that fragment of the code you changed?
