I'm relatively new to civ4, but have played quite a bit of all the earlyer versions. So naturally, I started to play civ4 at noble.
At first I just wanted to "explore" the possibilities you have here. however, trying to keep things interesting, I always play raging barbarians and aggressive AI.

Now... don't get me wrong, I'm a peaceloving kind of civ player, so, each time I kinda kept to myself, building my little empire, until, at some point, I always got raped by some bloodthirsty AI.

That was until THIS game: I'm playing mongols (the creative kind), and I managed to climb on top of the score list. I'm culturally aggressive with the neighbors, (that's why they don't like me very much), at some point I "had" to eliminate the aztecs for having the nerve to attack me. that has left me with a very experienced army, and with quite a lot of cash. I just got military tradition, and I'm on top of the world!! I upgrade all my seasoned troops, and think I'm invincible. I even have riflemen, with 3 city defence promotions. I'm really great. So , again, I start annoying the neighbors with culture bombs, and things like that. They can't really do anything, if they know what's good for them.

And then, Tokugawa attacks me (from the south - in the conquered aztec lands). I figure... he must be crazy. He comes at me with fewer knights then I have cavalry. he stars annoying me by distroying improvements...

I think: "Eat Hot Death!!"

Not one turn later, Peter declares war, and masses a few troops on the northen border (again knights, pikemen, catapults ... things like that). I think: "Bring it on!!!"

next turn, while i have 75% of my more mobile troops trying to round up all the knights wreaking havoc in the south, peter lands on the eastern shores near my least defended city, kills my stone supply, and somehow manages to destroy my only horse source as well. And then!! Isabela, my trusted neighbor, friend and trade partner to the west (who lost a border city to culture switch and is second on the score list :P ) declares war, and swarms me with more conquistadors then I can count!!!!

My first impulse was 'esc' / quit to desktop!!!

after a few days, when I calmed down, and managed to buy a new keyboard  , I load the game, and after I lose 2 cities, get nationalism and manage to get the egyptians to attack Isabela to get some of the pressure off me, sign a shameful cease fire with Tokugawa, and convert all my eforts to military production, I manage to stabilize the front with Isabela and Peter, and even go on the offensive a bit.

But by now, my beautyful empire is in flames. I only have a few improvements around the capital left, almost all the workers are dead, and I'm no longer on top of the list.

So... the point is: don't get overconfident, and ALWAYS scout your neighbors for suspicious hordes of mounted units :)

Or, when you get into a war, recruit your neighbors so they won't have time to kill you.
