Movie version of "what song are you listening to". :)

I recently saw Waking Life (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243017/) and found it underwhelming and disjointed.

Tommorrow I'll probably watch The Hidden Fortress from Akira Kurosawa. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051808/) :)

What have you seen lately?

I don't go to the movies much, but I watch a lot of films on DVD.
Last film I saw was The Descent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435625/).
Before that, Romero's Martin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077914/)
And before that, Mizoguchi's Ugetsu Monogatari (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046478/) (if you like Kurosawa you should like Mizoguchi.

Submerged (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416243/), Steven Seagal. Meh.
The Marksman (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457090/), Wesley Snipes. Not bad for a direct to video movie. Wasn't Blade, but it was okay.F-14's aren't bombers!
Kill Bill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266697/), Uma Thurman. From the previews I expected more swordplay. I'm also not too fond of non-linear movies. But it was good enough that I'd like to see the sequal sometime.

Did you hear the films this time Turner? or just read them? ;)

Had a movie Marathon at the weekend with the GF -
Streetcar Named Desire (didn't like it but the girlfriend's a huge Leigh fan so.... meh)
Kingdom of Heaven (seen it before and like it)
Reservoir Dogs (GF hadn't seen it... will never watch it again)
Manhattan (GF hadn't seen a single Woody Allen film, I was shocked)
The Transporter (good old fashion fun)

At the cinema the last film I went to see was Crank. Again, good old Fashion fun, little plot, all action, perfect.

I love Jason Statham. Looking forward to seeing Crank.

I recommend it Turner. I'm a big fan of him too. I like the fact that since the 80's, there really hasn't been much of a 'Man film'. You used to see them all the time, Cobra with Stallone, Commando with Arnie, AWOL with Van Damme. Films with little plot, and lots of killing and explosions. They sort of died out but now Statham has found a little niche for himself and, ok it may not win Oscars. it's the perfect type of film to own on DVD and shove on when you come home from a hard days work (or after a night of drinking heh)

Latest film on DVD I saw was "The Hills Have Eyes", not too bad.

The last film I saw in the Cinema (Or Movie Theater for the Yanks) was Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest, it didn't have a firm ending, they just make more excuses for sequals. Before that I saw Poseidon in the Cinema, now that was a total waste of money.

I'm going to see My Neightbor Totoro (Naapurini Totoro, Tonari no Totoro) in the Cinema on 16.9 in Japanese with Finnish subtitles, at the Helsinki International Film Festival. I already have the movie on a Hong Kong DVD (Japanese with English subs), and as a Ghibli fanatic, I know that I'm going to see a great movie, it'll however be a totally different experience seeing it on the big screen. :D

I'm trying to remember other movies I've seen recently, and none come to mind. Well, one... Grilled (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409043/), with Ray Romano and Kevin James. People, this isn't a comedy. There's nothing funny about this movie. I was disappointed in it. Although the last half of the movie is okay, the first half is rather boring.

See it if you must, but don't expect anything from it.

Thats rather suprising considering the cast.

Are they still making the King of Queens.

I think part of the problem was that I kept expecting them to start cracking jokes. This isn't even a black comedy like The Cable Guy, which was an awesome movie.

It did get to a point where it started getting interesting...so maybe if I went back and watched it again I'll feel differently about it.

It should be noted that when I said "This isn't a comedy" I meant that this movie is not trying to be funny and failing, but that it's not a comedy at all. But you know, you see Everybody Loves Raymond and The King of Queens on the cover, you expect a comedy.

As for the show itself, I don't know. Don't watch it much.

Yeah, a lot of people did. Which is why a lot of people don't like it. The first time I saw it, I felt the same way. Then one day, there was nothing else on TV and I ended up watching it again. It slowly dawned on me that it's not an Ace Ventura type comedy. Once I got past that, the movie was much better.

I got the Quentin Tarantino Collection for my birthday, so I recently went through Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill Volume I+II. Hadn't seen any of them before. Pulp Fiction was by far the best, really brilliant movie, but Reservoir Dogs was nice too. The Kill Bill movies were a bit hard to take seriously at times story and dialogue-wise, but they had some nice action sequences and generally powerful(and gory!) images, so I enjoyed them as well.

Recently (the last week) I saw the following:

- Les Triplettes de Belleville:

I've seen it a few times before but am consistently impressed each time I watch it again. The music, message, symbolism, animation and cultural insights are brilliantly conceived and executed. More animation from these guys please!

- The Curse of El Charro:

A crappy, low budget, American horror movie. Thing with horror movies is, even when they're crap, they're great fun!

- A Beautiful Mind:

It was on TV in Britain last week and I was still impressed by it, even though I've seen it twice already. This time around I noticed how the alternative treatment they came up with for Nash (letting him hang out at Princeton) was infinitely better for him than the electro-shock therapy. I was also more interested in the comments on Nash's Equilibrium, which I wasn't before, and how he developed it from playing games like 'Go'.

- Volver:

Almodovar's latest. It's very good, especially the script, and creeps up on you. Not as densely packed with grotesque humour as his films normally are, but there were still some priceless moments. It wasn't as visually interesting as one would expect, but that wouldn't have been appropriate for this story. However, if you've seen or read Henrik Ibsen's "Ghosts", you will notice that Volver's story is an almost exact carbon copy of it. :scan:

I haven't been able to cry over a movie in a very long time - I think this inability is a sign of weakness on my part. The closest I came was the last Harry Potter movie, right when that one guy dies.

Can't really think of anything more appropriate than "Ghosts". "Gengangere" litterally means "those who walk again". The most direct translation would be "Rewalkers", but that word doesn't exist:) My dictionary says "Ghost, apparition or spectre", so I think the translation is quite adequate.
Never read the book, though, so perhaps the word in the original language has some connection to the story that is lost in translation by using "ghosts".

I remember that the subtitles had 'Volver' translated as "coming back". (I noticed no reference, nor tip of the hat made by Almodovar to Ibsen's piece, tut tut.)

I just watched The Magnificent Seven last night. It was watchable but didn't hold a flame to The Seven Samurai (the movie that inspired it).

You know that theory about watching a version first means you like it better than the seeing a film later, well guess what it's nonsense, The Seven Samurai blasts the magnificent seven into pieces on the good film scale. Seeing The Magnificent Seven and then The Seven Samurai some years later reminds me of how much of a pale copy it was.

I saw Jesus Camp yesterday. It was excruciating to watch. However, it was interesting. If anyone has ever said that Jesus Camp paints Christians in a bad light, I don't see how. There is next to no commentary in Jesus Camp. It's essentially just a bunch of clips run together from that female pastor's camp. One of the things that pissed me off is when she said, "ok, let's pray in tongues," and then she prayed in English, and then prayed in what sounded like some other language, which definitely looked to me like she just made it up.

Saw THe Black Dahlia last weekend. What a waste of money....

So did I... awful. I also saw the Trailer Park Boys movie, which was a huge disappointment. The TV series is far more nuanced, edgy, and has more sophisticated/subtle humour and detail. Not to mention that almost every scene in the movie was rehashed from the series. It just didn't translate to the screen (different camera angles gave it a totally different feeling too) and was poorly written for diehard fans IMO. We didn't want to see the same old jokes again, we wanted a more potent version. Instead we got a watered down film with a totally different feel (no detail).

I saw "The History Boys" a few nights ago. Some of the funniest, sharpest writing I've seen on screen for a while (by Alan Bennett). The acting was very impressive (same cast as the long running stage show apparently) and the honesty between the boys and teachers was quite refreshing to see. It was also a wonderful comment on the nature of knowledge in schools; with a tension played out between Hector, who preferred a more chaotic 'knowledge for its own sake' approach to teaching and the Headmaster, who was drearily driven by results and 'quantifiability'. Very telling on the ways our societies are going.

Over the weekend I watched:

Lost, Season 2; Episodes 8-17.I like your style. I find that I simply cannot, rather will not, sit down for an hour on a specific evening each week to watch them. So I did much the same. Watched the whole of series 2 in about 3 days flat. It was excellent!

if you have something going in your life, if you have a life, i recommend you watching this movie, its so bad, its really good!

Can't really think of anything more appropriate than "Ghosts". "Gengangere" litterally means "those who walk again". The most direct translation would be "Rewalkers", but that word doesn't exist:)

"Revenants". Different etymology (comes from French) but has pretty much the same literal meaning -- "those who come again". Also sounds more sinister and stylish than a mere "ghosts".

Obtopic: Twillight Samurai is the most recent movie I've seen. Pretty good stuff.

Saw The Departed sunday night. It was brilliant. I never really understood the adjective "self-assured" when it came to movie making but I do now. The makers simply had faith in the writing and didn't add anything stupid or unnecessary. It kept picking up speed and building momentum that by the time the rollercoaster crashes into a wall at the end of the movie you are stunned. Excellent stuff, recommended for all.

I did watch that just a few years ago and while it was certainly quite dumb indeed, you underestimate the sheer depths of dumbness possible in a movie. For I assure you, there are far, far worse ones out there. A quick perusal of the movie review column at somethingawful should suffice to demonstrate this.

I saw I Am Sam, with Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer.

It wasnt a great movie, good actors couldnt save the thin storyline. only upside was i was reminded of how beautiful michelle pfeiffer is, i had almost forgotten that. 4/10

another movie i saw recently was Midnight Run from 1988 with Robert Deniro. Its a really great movie, recommended. 8/10

Last night I saw Atomic Cafe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083590/) in finnish television for the second time.

Plot Outline: Disturbing collection of 1960s United States government issued propaganda films designed to reassure Americans that the atomic bomb was not a threat to their safety.

Army information film: When not close enough to be killed, the atomic bomb is one of the most beautiful sights in the world.

Civil defense film: Be sure to include tranquilizers to ease the strain and monotony of life in a fallout shelter. A bottle of 100 should be sufficient for a family of four. Tranquilizers are not a narcotic, and are not habit-forming.

Classic stuff.

They are right, you know.

In one class I saw a WWII propaganda film about the Japanese-American internment camps. It wasn't what I was expecting. They weren't at all racist, and they did recognize the problem with detaining citizens of a democracy without charges. But they claimed that it was necessary for the war effort (a Japanese invasion of the mainland was a real fear), and even said that most of those detained accepted it as their patriotic duty. Which I doubt - but they didn't villify anyone.

They are right, you know.Yes, of course.

That's the whole point of these films for me at least, about human psychology.
It shows exactly how reasonable things seem to be even though they are absolutely horrendorous.

Anyone know the difference betweek the Director's cut and regular cut of Blade Runner? I'm too lazy to look it up right now.Director's cut doesn't have narration, has music from Vangelis (not sure did original have it?) and the ending is bit different with slight hint that Deckard doesn't acknowledge something.

I prefer the Director's cut of course.
One of my favourites.

The Cable Guy isn't that bad if you realize that it's not a comedy, but a dark comedy. Jim Carrey pulled it off perfectly. I think a lot of people went to this movie expecting to see Fireman Bob and Ace Ventura... But that's not the way the movie goes at all.

I hated it the first time I saw it. Saw it again a few months later and it was better the second time around.

Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions.
I did not like them (well i had seen them before, but sometime ago).
The worst part was when the brooklyn prophet went on to "explain" that everything metaphysical was "exiled programs", with vampires, hallucinations etc all brought into the same category. That was a very poor script :/

The original Matrix was somewhat better; at least it did not include so many utterly childish ploys such as the antropomorphism of the programs. A french program and an indian program  why exactly were they french and indian? did they actually form a view about french and indian civilisation? not really, they just were moneygrabbing cliche programs :p

Generally everything in the Matrix series is full of holes, and as such the series is of very low quality.

I saw Children of men yesterday. I really liked it, I did good dragging you into the alpocalyptic atmosphere of 2027 Brittain in a world where people are unable to procreate anymore.

However I have the feeling they could have gotten more out of it. It has a great premise (protect the only baby left in the world) but they could have worked it out more.

The scene where they carry the baby outside through the warzone, everybody stops fighting and is just in awe of the crying little human in its mother arms was beautifull

I went and saw "A Good Year" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401445/) last night. Whilst being quite simplistic in its delivery and obvious in its message, the film was nevertheless very enjoyable, with a worthwhile message that we can't be reminded of enough. It also seemed to be quite a personal comment from an aging, mellowing, somewhat lazy Ridley Scott, who lives but 20 miles from where most of the film was shot. He's living the message.
