Today i got my copy of warlords.
One thing that i haven't been able to find is where i can see points needed to create a great general.
I have seen nearly all screens and views but no way to find it.
Can anyone help me?

Go to the military advisor screen. (the one where you see the units) You'll have a bar at the bottom of the screen which shows how much you have left till you get your next great general.

Aw, you shouldn't have told them - it will make the game even easier.

I've only just discovered (by accident) that if you click on a row in the Domestic Adviser screen - not the 'enter city screen' icon - it brings up a display of the specialists in that city, from which you can alter their functions. Even now, I doubt that I have found every last little bit of information you can access with a well-placed mouse-over and/or click. Can somebody tell me where to find exactly how many flasksworths of research I am doing ?

Press F1. You can see your totals for your Nation/Civilization as a whole as well as how many beakers your cities are researching per turn.

No I can't. I have tried clicking on everything, scrolling, swearing at the computer and everything else that has come to mind, but never can I see a total for research. Total cost for research, yes - on the Financial screen - but the research I am getting is not necessarily in a one-to-one relationship with the gold I'm spending.

Hmm, I see what you mean. You can see what each individual city is producing, but not the grand total for the whole civ. I've noticed that, too - though I've never been so bothered about it that I've given it much thought, to be honest.

Use the financial advisor. F2 or F3, I think. It will tell you how many beakers you're putting out.

NO ! The Fin. Adv. says how much gold is going to research, but (as I said above) this does not necessarily equate to the generated flasks, of which I usually get more than 1 per gold spent. I can get a figure for the last turn by noting the progress of research from one turn to the next, but research can change during a turn and I want to know what I'm actually getting at any given time. The computer knows, obviously, but it won't tell me. Waaahh!

No it doesn't. The financial advisor gives you two numbers, the percent of your GDP being dedicated to something, and how much of that your cities are producing combined. If you add up the beakers in the domestic advisor, you'll get the same number the financial advisor gives you. If you add scientists to your cities, this will be reflected in the financial advisor. If you get buildings like the academy, this will be reflected in the financial advisor. It's true that the number of beakers added to your research is more than the sum of beakers your city produces. I don't know why that is, but the values do appear to be closely related.

And that is my point. Where do these extra flasks come from, and how many are there ?
I have just begun a new game and as yet have only 3 cities, so it's easy to check their total research and its cost. At one stage, research had reached 394 (of 483), leaving 89 to get in two turns; this demands 45 flasks per turn. Total city research 37.6, costing 37. Next turn I had 439 flasks, an increase of 45, which is 7.4 flasks more than the unchanged city production and almost a 20% increase. Very nice, but why ? No, not because other civs already have Monarchy, which is what I was researching: I checked on the Foreign Adviser and can offer both Priesthood and Monotheism to my closest rivals, and the civs I haven't yet met occupied the lowest places on the "Most Advanced Civs" list that appeared a few turns ago.

My guess is one of two things. It might be there so that research times display as 500 rounds and such during anarchy, instead of infinite. In this case, it's probably based upon the number of cities you have, your population, your present technological level, or some combination of these. The other possibility is that it's an exponential function which causes increases in reseach rate to have more effect, thereby giving an incentive to push for small increases in research rate.
