hi

i was playing civ and i discoverd theology, and i got a christian missionary. I went to another one of my city and tried to spread the religion christian, but it failed:(. why did it fail? can someone please tell me.

You can't be sure that the missionary will succeed. There is a certain chance of success based on number of religions already present in the city and depending on whether it's your own or an enemy's city.

Someone could probably open up the XML and get the exact percentages, but basically it is as follows:

0 Religions in a city = 100% chance of new religion spreading
1 Religion in a city = Really good chance of new religion spreading
2 religions in a city = probably around a 50% chance of new religion spreading
3 or more religions = not that good of chance of new religion spreading

I think you can still spread other religions around your empire even if it is non-state while you are in Theocracy.

If your running theocracy it doesn't even give you the option.
