Ideas about Great General.

Be aware that in upcoming Warlord version, the possibility of getting great generals through cities is no more. You can only get generals on battle field.

Well I believe that Great Generals are born in Academy of Tough life and win their renown in field. I think it should be kind of Unit Victory as in Civ3 but with many added features, like its presence in battle could boost morale and increase chance of victory.
Presence of Great General could also trigger golden age or perhaps can get public motivated there is general reduction in training of troops.
It can also create loss of morale on rival side.
Many possibilities are there, anyway.

This refers to warlords

It seems a bit strange that great generals/warlords appear in cities.

It would be more logical for the GG to appear on the tile where the battle was fought, like it was in vanilla TR.

how is it determined what city the general spawns in?

My guess for it spawning in cities is that they dont come as often as they did in vanilla Total Realism so if they spawned on the tile the battle was at, there is a risk that it could potentially be destroyed which would suck. to say the least.:( :)

That said I did like it spawning on the tile the battle was fought

Makes perfect sense that they spawn in the cities... they're in the rear with the gear! haha. On the serious side, if they're the kind of general/admiral that is a REMF, then they're not even close to being "Great"

REMF?

What does that mean?

How about giving a question "do you want to pay the enemy for your fallen general (will cost you 100gold), or let him go/die". After paying for your general, we will respawn in your capital city after 3 days, but wont be assingned to any unit (new general with same name). But the enemy might not wish to even hear about that (furious towards you, barbarians should accept, as they want money not blood... i think...). For fallen general inside borders ypu pay 50% less.

I say this is realistic. Generals are rarelly taking place in battle, mostly observing from hill and giving singnal to attack/flank/retreat. But such as Alexander the Great actually fought. So maybe a chance of propability for your general to be captured, therefore allowing you to buy him back ?

All pretty good discussion...

I'd play Devil's Advocate here because we all have to remember that one of the things a General can do gamewise is add to a city as a Super Specialist, giving the +2 XP bonus. That can't be done in the field. Again, that doesn't mean he SHOULDN'T spawn in the field, I'm just adding in stuff for us to remember as we talk... :)

How about giving a Great general a bunus to all units when stationing inside fortress (not only medic).

Some +x% to defance and +x% to attack.

That would add another pop-up to the game... which is probably not a good thing. I'd suggest that Barbarians wouldn't take prisoners (think about your poor workers), and 'important' people are no exception. Generals defeated by the enemy MIGHT be captured... possibly add a diplomacy option to allow them to be bought back.

Relative to that, perhaps a captured genral might himself be recaptured, with a decisive offensive, if you can get to him before the enemy gets to a safer place (depending on the tactical situation).

Alternatively, if the enemy doesn't want to trade him back, if they can get him to a city they can torture him for information (sacrificing the general, and possibly revealing useful information like maps and troop positions).

Thats what i meant, Generals defeated by the enemy MIGHT be captured... The question is how high chance.

As for barbarians, they are often after profit, not only murder. I think you should be able to trade gold to ask them to attack a specifiezed city (even your one to train your units)

Could we make GG's era specific? Because here is one that looks nice.

GG is (partly) era specific - in civ4 we can set 3 art tags for ancient/medieval/late eras. most GG have this set, but this unit look very interesting...
