View Full Version : lowering FfH II startup time from 10 minutes to 10 seconds
seZereth Sep 13, 2006, 04:18 AM ok, i heard people complaining about start up times of 10 minutes and such, i personally had some 3 or 5 minutes before i triied this:
EDIT
install FfH II in your My Documents/my games/civilizatian 4/MODS (or something like this)
instead of the main civ 4 folder!
this reduces startup loading time to an incredible low amount of time, almost as fast a s vanilla.....
Kael that it brings some minor graphical issues with it.

known bugs with it so far that ive noticed or been told of:
-map view of the city does not show custom images for the city bar current build
-fruits of ydragsil shows up as the drama resource icon in the foreign advisor"
try it out and post the result here!
Maniac Sep 13, 2006, 04:31 AM If one puts stuff in the Custom Assets folder, does one still need to start up the mod as a mod (ie, Mod = Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 015 in CivilizationIV.ini), or does it become the base game, and you need to change it to Mod = 0?

if you put it in the customassets/MOD folder, then it is a Mod and has to be loaded as such!
everything you put in the customassets/art... folder will be loaded directly into the game, so make sure to put it in the /MOD folder!
Kael Sep 13, 2006, 08:13 AM I would not recommend this as it will break all other mods, and future versions of FfH if you install them normally.
Sureshot Sep 13, 2006, 08:17 AM i do it but theres one graphical glitch atleast, havent noticed any others for certain yet
Kael Sep 13, 2006, 08:21 AM Actually Im not sure if Sez means:
1. ..\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\MODS\
In which case there is one minor graphical problem reported bu others are running this way without problems.
or
2. ..\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CustomAssets\
Which will break all other mods and I would highly suggest its not done.
There is no CustomAssets\MODS\ directory.
Sureshot Sep 13, 2006, 08:24 AM oh right, havent tried the customassets one, the MODS one works fine enough for my purposes and im attentive enough to make sure i always install there

oops sorry did that out of memory, after triing it yesterday. didnt notice any issues, but i am sure i installed it into the big letter MODS directory.
Silverkiss Sep 13, 2006, 01:58 PM You just need to have a good memory so you remenber patching in the My Documents folder...
didolover Sep 13, 2006, 03:42 PM ok im going to load the file into the \mygames\blah blah\MODS directory however when i download future upgrades will THEY go there as well? or do i download, delete, and move to the \MODS file?
Silverkiss Sep 13, 2006, 03:44 PM when you are going to install, click "Browse" and select the My Documents path instead of the normal path

didolover Sep 13, 2006, 04:49 PM thanx
didnt have a chance to play but i loaded it and you aint kidding total load time went from an average of eight minutes to less than thirty seconds and the exit time also zipped ...
wilboman Sep 14, 2006, 04:36 PM I love it. Firaxis must have fixed some dead linking or something in one of their patches, because I remember it didn't work at all if you installed it in that directory before, which is why I started sticking it in the game files...
griffin71 Sep 16, 2006, 02:57 PM Question:
Is there anyway to move the "My Documents" folder to another harddisk than your windows install is on? Currently I have not enough space there.
Sureshot Sep 16, 2006, 03:32 PM i think theres some issues with musik doing it the fast way
like, religion musiks dont seem to run sometimes (maybe not ever, though i hear the vanilla civ musiks), and when you zoom in close to the cities i wasnt hearing the civ musik either (just noticed that recently with the calabim)
so might be issues with custom musik
edit: no, i just had my musik turned off and forgot i did it lol

A quick google search gave me the following information:
http://www.felgall.com/doswin55.htm
Apparently, you just need to right-click the desktop 'my documents' icon and choose a different target, and programs will start using the new location.
