I think the best (and most well known) would be RTR or Rome: Total Realism. I've just recently installed it and it's aim is to 'fix all the historical inaccuracies in the game' Alot of tweaks to the whole game including a larger map.

There are also some mods which enable you to play unplayable factions.

Europa Barbarium (or something like that) looks good from the initial descriptions. Apparently the mod might not be quite finished but it seems that it will be a similar sort of mod to RTR.

You don't need a mod to play 'unplayable' factions, if you know the right text file to go looking in

I did hear about that just today, it does look very interesting :)

I have EB, and it is a great mod. The one problem I have with it is the government buildings take too long to build IMHO (20 turns for a homeland government, or 16 for a colony). It adds Epiros, the Getae, Baktria, and the Yuezhi, and the Gauls are split between the Arveni and Aedui. It's pretty similar to RTR.

How many playable empires does it have?

and is there a map of the starting positions anywhere?

Arthurian: TW is pretty cool (and I'm not just saying that because I help work on it)

I believe there are 17 playable factions in Rome Total Realism.
Carthage, Numidia, Spain, Gaul, Germany, Sarmations, Illyrians, Thracians, Macedonians, Greek Cities, Romans, Egyptians, Seleucids, Armenians, Pontics, Parthians, and Bactrians.

What site would that be at?

You can find that stuff here (http://www.europabarbarorum.com). The map is under features.

Thanks the map looks interesting. I think I will install it once I finish my Numidia campaign.
