View Full Version : New Unit: Grunt

Well, here is my first finished unit, the Grunt. This was a simple conversion from the Marine. I just removed his sleeves and darkened the green of his uniform. I was tempted to remove the shirt all together, but decided against it. I may still do this if there is a demand. But I have other things to take care of right now.

This is a modern infantry unit, representing infantry starting around 1970. The infantry unit currently in the game seems to represent WWI infantry and the Marines and Paratroopers come in around WWII.

The Grunt and SpecialOps Units would then represent our modern armies along with the HumVee, Modern Armor, Mechanized Infantry, the Gunship and eventually the APC.

Let me know what you think.

The Zip includes the Ini, Default, fidget, attack, run, death, fortify, and victory animations. copy all the sound files from the Marine folder and paste them into the new grunt folder.

No More Blue Shadow

I don't know how to make an animated preview gif, so here is a pic of the default storyboard.

Can someone explain to me how to make an animated preview? or point me to a thread that already details the steps necessary?

Thanks,

Just use Animation Shop, load in your pcx and it is then very easy to do. Then just save as a gif and attach it to your post.

Anybody Can use this in their Mods, you don't have to ask. Anything that I place on these boards is for everybody and anybody to use in whatever manner they feel fit. I would only ask that, if you do use it in your mod, that you mention me in your Readme.

I think this is a common understanding among most of us here, am I correct in thinking this?

I'm going to use it as a modern mercenary with stats equivalent of a marine. They'll be cheaper to produce but have the hidden nationality flag meaning you'll have to get them close to their target before another civ tries to take 'em out. Anyone have any other ideas what to do with them?

I plan on using them as an upgrade to the infantry line.

After redoing almost all of the A/D/Ms for my mod here is the progression:

Unit A/D/M S/R/R Cost Tech Upgrade to
Infantry 8/10/1 8/1/2 100 Rep Parts Grunt
Grunt 10/10/2 10/1/2 110 Plastics Mobile Inf
Marine 14/10/2 10/1/2 140 Amph Warfare Mobile Inf

Paratrooper 12/12/2 10/1/2 140 Adv Flight SpecOPs
SpecOPs 16/12/2 12/1/2 160 Adv Tactics Mobile Inf
Mobile Inf 30/20/4 18/1/3 240 Adv Warfare Mobile Inf

awsome unit! :)

the blue shadow, though, is it posible to change that color? It's kinda intrusive with the gameplay... but i love it.

I like the idea of a militia unit. Longbow/Swordsmen would upgrade to it (for a high price). Comes w/ replaceable parts, but it's cheaper and weaker than infantry, and never expires. Thanks!

Hi guys- Just love this one !!! I have it as the update for the infantry (and German Waffen SS respectivly) :D :D :D But- but (ok, dont spoil it winter...) but- could it be that the shadow is not within the right palette ???

It turns blue in the game  or do i have the wrong version ??? If not could u tell me how i can change that ???

Cheers, and thanx for a great unit

Ok- everything is sorted with the newest version !!! Again thanx for a cool unit and a job well done :goodjob:

ps. Why dont U make some different coloured versions of the grunt (referring in part to the no-shirt version as well). I mention this because it becomes difficult to distiguish the marine from the grunt unit - specially if the player colours are something greenish... Perhaps with desert colours (camuflage?), grey or blueish (alternate marine?) there could be more variety.

another thing I thought about is to change "lil things" (if there is anything like that) like the head gear- i.e. berret instead of helmet: Dark Uniform + Black Berret = Russian Naval Infantry (or so)- this is sth. that sprung 2 me mind when i saw the mortar and pss-radar versions of the infantry unit :)

Anyhow- Keep up the god work :D

Great unit, the only problem is how to use the in game. I mean, There is at least three modern infantry units out there now... He looks kinda American though, doesn't he (like a Vietnam War type of soldier) perhaps I just use him as a flavor for the americans...

Looking forward to making units myself too, just starting to learn. But Right now I have some serious reading to do - must read three novels and write a paper on them by friday...!! I have started today though... Very annoying, but Civ is damaging my studies very severly... Or perhaps that there is school that is damaging my civ playing...?

Anyways, good lookin unit Kal-el! And what about the idea from someone about other colors: desert camo etc?

He is very Vietnam Era US Soldier except that his rifle has a bannana clip and all US Rifles use straight clips.

hey i know this is bringing up a really old thread but i was wondering if we could have a version of this unit wielding an M16?
i just need it for a US Vietnam soldier and the machine gun (AK-74?) he is holding makes it difficult to use as a Vietnam soldier, if somone could help i would be so grateful
