View Full Version : Wild West Scenario

Well, a long time ago I tried to make an American West scenario, but it didn't work out to my liking. Now that NavyDawg has made that great new sherrif unit I decided I would try again.

Here's what I'm thinking for civs:

United States
Objective - Win by domination ("settle" the old west, and take out the native tribes)
Units - Cavalry and riflemen auto-produced from pre-placed forts; sherrif, fur trapper, pioneer, frontiersman, cowboy, ships?, cannon

Mexico
Objective - probably a non-playable civ, not sure what their victory conditions would be
Units - Cavalry and riflemen, vilista, vaquero?, ships?, cannon

Indian Tribes:
All indian tribes will have a bowman that upgrades to a riflemen, and a horse archer that upgrades to a cavalry, as well as a unique unit (scout, invisible hunter, worker, etc.)
Sioux, Apache, Navaho, and Paiute (other minor tribes will be barbs)
Objective - ?

Outlaws
Objective - capture "treasure units" and bring them back to the outlaw hideout
Units - Bandit, Bounty Hunter, Halfbreed Indians
If I made all their units hidden nationality then everyone would still know who they were if none of the other civs had hidden nationality units; however that would mean that the outlaws couldn't capture any cities which seems logical
Questions:

1. What should Mexican victory condition be
2. I have some pretty good ideas for improvements and wonders for the US and Mexico but I don't have very many for the native tribes, any ideas?
3. Tech tree - I have no clue, except that the indians would probably have a different tree than the US, and would have to trade to get gunpowder, any ideas?

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Got the map done.

Then U should rename the Scenario: Wild West, then people would pay more attention on it ;) And as for map me thinks you should use USA map!

I would add a bandit civ in, they'd be fun to play as.

But never the less, its still wild, damned be those Indians they just killed my chicken!

PS. Indians should be Barbarians but not the white civ color but brown! :)

I think the Bandits should have Hidden Nationality Units and the Native Americans should be Barbarians, but really, really!, REALLY!, REALLY!! Powerful.

if you want to mix it up a bit, you could make a "pioneer" civ, as opposed to US Govt...in the Goldrush days, alot of mining camps had unrealistic visions of becoming a seperate nation(or at least independant from the US)...until the US Govt came in and started Annexing camps, most of which were populated with people trying to escape the Govt for one reason or another(Criminals, and also people who wanted a fair chance to own something)...You will find that these camp were eventually bought by the Venture Capitolists of the time(George Hearst for example), and annexed into America...but prior to that, they were essentially Anarchists...

Sounds like a fun scenario :)

I would suggest having a several large Native American tribes as civs (Sioux, Apache, Iroquois etc.) and have some of the smaller ones as barbarians

like the idea of a bandits civ too

I would think that depending on the Map used, the Iroquois wouldnt work...they were based more North Eastern IIRC...much like the Huron indians wouldnt work...

The Souix are the Major tribe mentioned in that period, maybe some Apache, Navaho(sp?), Pueblo(mex)...

Also, dont make all units for indians upgrade to guns, thats hollywood...there were guns, but in reality the indians didnt like them(because they didnt understand how they worked)...See Indians would ride in circles, attacking in the middle...the guns would shoot so far that indians would shoot indians across the circle...so they didnt take to the guns as well as the movies seem to think they did...

Okay I like the idea of the outlaws having their own civ, I edited the first post to include them. Like Spacer One says the Iroquois and Huron don't fit these map parameters, but I might need help figuring out which Indian tribes do.
@ Partizanac - I could change the Barbarians to brown I suppose, any particular reason?

Maybe this will help...

I recomend adding the Dakota indians, but here is the best map I could find with JUST names on it...

Wow thats perfect Spacer One thank you very much!
Who do you think should be the leader of the US?

depends on the years...Hayes and/or Grant...2 of the more "spoken about" presidents of the day...

http://www.americanpresident.org/history/rutherfordbhayes/ (1877-1881)

http://www.americanpresident.org/history/ulyssessgrant/ (1869-1877)

Also during the time of the Goldrush were:

James Garfield, (something) Arthur, and Grover Cleveland(maybe too late, not sure)

a bit earlier: James Polk, Zach Taylor...

Hayes is your best bet IMO

Well I have all the units added so progress is being made, albeit somewhat slowly.

Question: Should the Native American tribes and Mexico have to win by domination like the US, or does anyone have any good ideas on changing their victory conditions to be more historically accurate? Or does anyone care?

Plotinus is the victory condition genius, (based on the awesome desert and mountain scenario) what do you have to say?

Mecico, by domination, Native Americans, by something else.

Ever thought of adding the Mormons as a civ? They were pretty much independent, and didn't really get along with anyone else in the area. They played a huge role in Utah and even a minor role Colorado, Idaho, and California.

There victory condition would probably be some kind of cultural one.

Mormons are a good idea. What would their units be? Missionaries and elders that enslave? anything else? buildings?

Lots of religous stuff...Temples, theology schools, etc...Missionaries are good...They had alot of guerilla type fighters...I forget exactly what they called them...there is an old wild west scenario that was in development awhile back...they were a civ then..I am sure if you can find it, it has info not just on them, but alot of other stuff too...

Okay, now I have the units, tech tree, and buildings all done, I'm still working on the civilopedia. I think I'm going to try to change the diplomacy txt also.
Here's a screenshot of some of the US units:

looks interesting...could use a "dustier" looking terrain IMO for the Old West...

oh and next time, please post pics in JPG or GIF format...as BMPs are hard for some users to open...

Can you tell me the name of the units besides the rifleman, the wagon, and the sherrif? :)

The mounted unit I'm calling a frontiersman, and the other unit I'm calling a bounty hunter (hidden nationality, stealth attack). Both units are American conquests conversions by Steph.

Here's some of the Mexican units:
A Mexican Cavalry (by Civarmy), rifleman, villista, and vaquero.

Is anyone interested in changing the diplomacy .txt for me? You know, putting in "cowboy" talk?
