View Full Version : The castle unit is almost complete/ suggestions for attack?
Kyriakos Sep 28, 2006, 07:09 PM I have finished the following animations:

This is mostly a 2d unit, although i used Bryce a little as well. For the attack i am thinking that the first frames will be the door closing, as in fortify, and then it can shoot some arrows (like those in the firaxis ship attack animations) or perhaps i can have a catapult like animation, or even gunpowder.
Do you like the unit?
Any suggestions for the attack?
Bluemofia Sep 28, 2006, 07:35 PM Arrows comming out, puffs of smoke appearing at places for gunpowder weapons, or fireballs being spewed from the towers. Or a combination of all of these.
Ozymandias Sep 28, 2006, 11:23 PM I'd go with indistinct projectiles being hurled over the walls either from catapults or bombards -- 2 birds; 1 stone. Any chance you might be convinced to do a Vauban Fort unit next? :bounce: (My goal is to every smilie at least once in 5 years :D )
Best,
Oz
Kyriakos Sep 29, 2006, 12:50 AM What is a Vauban fort? (i will go look it up) (edit: looked it up; you mean the one in the firaxis industrial gfx for fortress?)
@Bluemofia: i will check the plague animation sometime in the near future :)
Spacer One Sep 29, 2006, 01:00 AM isnt someone making a monty python "Holy Grail" scenario IIRC??
If so, a "cowtapult" attack would be useful...a cow flying over the wall...
if not, then its just silly...(stop that...its too silly)
Id like to see a "flaming" attack if possible...burning debris flung over the wall...or a fireball...
Yorgos Sep 29, 2006, 03:42 AM I'd also like to see this cow animation... but I know it's hard to make. In addition I think there's room for improvement. The fidget, for example, could be something not involving the gate, a flag perhaps?
If Your Custom Civ Mod is ever going to be completed, I'll make a Monty Python civ and find a use for this castle.
"We're Knights of the Round Table
We dance whene'er we're able
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable
We dine well here in Camelot
We eat ham and jam and Spam a lot
We're Knights of the Round Table
Our shows are formidable
But many times we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable
We're opera-mad in Camelot
We sing from the diaphragm a lo-o-o-o-t
In war we're tough and able
Quite indefatigable
Between our quests, we sequin vests
And impersonate Clark Gable
It's a busy life in Camelot
I have to push the pram a lot"
Ozymandias Sep 29, 2006, 08:36 AM What is a Vauban fort? (i will go look it up) (edit: looked it up; you mean the one in the firaxis industrial gfx for fortress?)
Essentially yes :) Cities were well fortified after the time most cities in the game pass Size 1 -- although it took a few centuries after the Turks' artillery destroyed Constantinople's walls in 1453 for military engineering to rise to the gunpowder challenge. Vauban was a 17th century expert in designing fortifications to withstand the gunpowder-based sieges of his day, and his work became the basis of all contemporary European fortifications. From a graphics point of view, the basic Firaxis industrial fortress is indeed a closs enough approximation.
Best,
Oz
EDIT: Here's a more grandiose rendition, a model for Vauban's Fortress of Neuf-Brisach, ca. 1703-1704
WerBackIII Sep 29, 2006, 09:25 AM Hot Oil from the towers.
Knights came out the castle and fight.
A lightning from the sky.
The gate opens and eat the enemies!
Takhisis Sep 29, 2006, 09:56 AM Hot oil from the towers, arrows, dropping stones, you can get a few ideas by watching the siege of Orleans in Atila the Hun... maybe some kind of magic attack as well...
Quinzy Sep 29, 2006, 10:40 AM for the attack, dont have the door close. keep it closed from the very 1st frame, as the fortify leads directly to the attack animation. a catapult attack would be the best.
abd i still think it looks a bit pink.
Takhisis Sep 29, 2006, 04:12 PM And it still is rather small...
Kyriakos Sep 29, 2006, 06:28 PM Well that's just too bad if you dont like it.
I happen to think that it is a lot better than the ussual units, which is what matters to me :)
Re size: here it is next to the ancient cavalry; i do not plan to enlarge it, although ill probably include a shadow:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/36763/castlebyky.PNG
Ill also think of the flag suggestion, although since the default atm is without movement, having the fidget move the door is a good idea ;)
T.A JONES Sep 29, 2006, 08:50 PM Just to be clear the unit is like any other but meant for stationary use. So its animated terrain in a sense right. You move it around to where you want it a shabang! instant animated fortress Correct?
Ok then instead of a castle that walks around before it settles down :) Could you make it so while its moving around it looks little a small construction crew or a guy with draft papers instead? then when its fortified it turns into a castle? Cool huh?
Just an idea :) Im an original supporter of this whole animated objects thing your rolling with, remember that, so I only want to see the vison be fulfilled in the best wayz possible. Cool if need any help let me know.
Kyriakos Sep 29, 2006, 08:57 PM I like your idea :)
However i will probably first upload it as an immobile unit, with a bombard ability ;)
I will then either ask for help from a unit maker to make such a "walking" flc, or try to make one myself, in the future :)
btw: can a unit have the immobile flag, and still be able to attack? (apart from bombard)
Ozymandias Sep 29, 2006, 10:12 PM The "usual" approach to units like these (castles; minefields; leper colonies) is to give them MF=0 and the paradrop ability.
Just Kidding About The Lepers,
Oz
Kyriakos Sep 30, 2006, 12:54 AM Check out the new fidget ;)
Back in the days of the Amiga500 it was very common to see such a style of animation in adventure games, such as Simon the Sorcerer, or Lure of the Temptress.
Although Delphine's "Another World" revolutionised animation, with a 3d-style of movement which immediately created a sensation, still the older style, with manually created sprites, had its own charm :)
T.A JONES Sep 30, 2006, 01:09 AM Good. glad you like it.
I hope to see you or anyone capable rise to the challange. Im not content anymore to sit back and help fuel the renasounce with only encouragment and comment threads on are great comeback, no along the way I'll occasionaly throw in an idea or two! :)
I doubt I'll ever be a great modder and never a graphics artist but Ill always be a fine conasoiur of great mods. So I appreacate anyone who has anything to do with making them :)
Takhisis Sep 30, 2006, 01:37 PM Hey you old-gamer, where can I get the Titus Fox? I´ve got the Prehistorik with the little caveman but, the old fox?
Kyriakos Oct 01, 2006, 08:31 PM Attack animation added.
The unit is now complete..
Takhisis Oct 01, 2006, 08:41 PM Have you posted it in units gfx forum?
btw does my new avatar reflect accurately my mental state?
