Another difficult choice. Which means there are many good unit makers, one year after civ4 came out. Lovely!

I considered the windwaker and the sheriff as well, but it's Aaglo's time. (That's not very good for his spider rider, the units I vote for never win)

btw: I should have mentioned this in the preview thread, but I don't get any credit for Navydawg's unit. I made him a holster and gun belt, nothing more. The rest is all him. So, please remove my name from the title of the unit as this is his 2nd unit and he deserves all the credit for it.

It sure is a tough choice, I'm going to have to think about it and vote later :) . The Norse axeman and Ethiopian Pikemen are "musts" for my mod; the sheriff is nicely "different" from some of the more standard units and is well done; aaglo's spider rider is excellent. I like the Owl resistor and Windwaker, but I think that my vote's between the first four I mentioned.

Whilst I like all of the units, I voted for Bjornlo's Norse Axeman :) .

The web attack and crazy walk cycle of aaglo's spider did it for me, though the pikeman was pretty close, and I do think that taunting the viking does (hitting his sheild) works great.

 Everyone, nice to see you all back here again!

Norse Axeman definetely. Though I also liked (a lot) Plotinus' unit, and aaglo's.

Although personally I'll get far more use (and therefor enjoyment) out of Plotinus' "African Dudes", Link was just so delightful I had to vote for him.

Thanks,
As I see it there are several reasons for the Sheriff doing so well.
1. it is well made and of use to many. So it is not going to lose many votes for the way it is put together.
2. If the Axeman is better or not, I'm not qualitfied to say (being one of the creators, and all that). But, the sheriff is unique. There are other axedudes in the game. Which my unit may or may not compare well to, but there are no other sheriff units.

So basically, I think the sheriff is getting so many votes for both being well made and for being made and for being clever and new. While mine must be getting a few extra votes because he has an axe, or maybe the fact that his animtions and included sounds are timed pretty well... or who knows. So no complaints from me about how people are voting. The thing that shocked me was actually how many downloads my Norse Axeman has been getting... well over 260 now, an average of around 100 dls per week since it was released. That is cool. This means that alot of people who aren't bothering to vote, have still voted that it is pretty good. :)
But, I'm not gonna lie. I was a little excited when my little axeman jumped into an early lead. I thought what a cool "welcome back to unit creation" it would be to get one of those little icons. Given how good all the other units are, I am surprised at how many votes both these two units are getting. To be perfectly honest, I had expected Plontinus' and Aaglo's units to be the top vote getters.
Not that I am complaining how the vote is going. Finishing 1st oR 2nd with my first Poser unit would be more than I expected.

PS: to those who haven't voted, please do so. Don't worry if the one you are voting for is back in the pack. The unit creator will no doubt appreciate the support. There are 10-20 times as many DLs are there are votes for most of these units. For example, my dude has gotten 6 times as many DLs as the total votes for all the units in this contest...

pps: I thought my two static (tech and titlescreen) would do better... but it seems those two might finish closer to dead last than first.... so no predicting what people will think is vote-worthy.

These things always go unexpectedly. I thought this one would be between you and aaglo, but aaglo hasn't done as well as I anticipated - in fact, I always think aaglo's going to do better than he actually does, so perhaps I just particularly like his work. At any rate, I don't think I've ever predicted the front-runners accurately. Just goes to show...

I just think that the fantasy units I do aren't just floating enough boats (is that a valid expression at all, I don't know  ). Meaning: most people prefer real-life units over fantasy units. Atleast that's my explanation ;) :p :mischief:

It's because I voted for Aaglo! I told you, my favourite units never win. Take Orthanc's ghostship in the previous contest; I consider it a masterpiece, but it finished only third. A pity... Perhaps I should keep my vote for the last day from now on.

It must be something like that... meaning my next two units aren't as likely to do as well. A troll and a mech.

start making units for a certain zombie scenario then ;) - the perfect crossover between fantasy and reality.

No it's not that.
It's because ppl prefer traditional mythological units :p (not WH/FF).

Well you could always make another boat, you would then literally float their boat.:D

To be honest, I've been very surprised with this contest, I thought it was almost unfair to submit a Link unit, Link being so popular, instead the Axeman and Sheriff are taking quite the lead, even well over aaglo's spider which no fantasy mod should be without.

No it's not that.
It's because ppl prefer traditional mythological units :p (not WH/FF).

I don't know, I find the creatures in WH/FF (and LOTR too) to be the best representation of those traditional fantasy creatures.

LOTR doesn't fit in that lot -> Norse myths (altered and a bit improvised here and there ... but still)

What exactly is traditional about (most) FF creatures ? From what ancient myths are they inspired ? (i am not saying i know the mythologies of ALL cultures)
Guns are also one of the top traditional subjects, no ?

most of the FF basic monsters are addaptions of Japanese myth (coeurl etc), and most of the Summons are adaptions of nearly every myth. Quetzcoatl, Leviathan, any big dragon, Cerberus etc..

FF has references and ties to just about every religion and mythology....

For example, creatures from Greek/Roman mythology have appeared as summons (Titan, Hades, Cerberus, Minotaur, etc), Norse mythology has apperared in the form of both summoned creatures (Odin) and places (Midgar, Neibelheim)... They even have some Japanese, Chinese and Indian religious references (Bahamut, Tiamat, Yojimbo, Ramuh, Shiva, etc) as well as Sumerian, Islamic and Judeo-Christian ones as well (Esthar, Ur, Aeris' Great Gospel Limit Break, Ifrit, Diablos, Leviathan, Gilgamesh, etc).

There were even Central American references in some of the games (Quetzecuatl)....

Anyways, back on topic, as I figured, my entry tanked.... Thanks to the 4 people who actually voted for her though.

None taken. I'm quite surprised how this is turning out and am glad to see that the Norse Axeman has taken the lead. That's not to say I don't like my Sheriff, I just don't think he's the best unit this go-round. I really thought it would be between Bjorn, Plotinus, and Aaglo. The Ethiopian Pikeman IMO has the best animations this month, regardless of whether or not it is your favorite genre or of immediate use for a mod or project. Aaglo's spider is certainly the most imaginative. BTW, the other units are great too! We need more than one vote...

I would also like to echo comments to our guests here that regularly visit and download units and other graphics to register and vote and post nice things.;)

@Quinzy & Hikaro: oh well that just shows how incredibly traditional i am. Meaning i didn't bother to consider other games not from ol' europe's influence and got caught up in the "i hate FF" craze.
The thing is, i am sure i would like the FF universe (regardless of the "units" in it) kuz it seems to have a good story. And i heard the gameplay(fights) is similar, but better than Septerra Core which i played and liked.
Hope i'll ever get some time to play it (at least 1 of the series) in the far future at least.
Even so, browsing through quinzy's link, i can't help but feel some discontent about how the units look. :hmm: And i am not talking about the graphics. I am reffering to some of the concepts which seem just ... wrong
