View Full Version : Refresh my memory, please (NFL-related)

I remember a play a few years ago that was one of the wackiest and funniest NFL moments I've ever seen. I can't recall what two teams were playing, though, much less the individual people involved. So I’d like my memory refreshed, if anyone can help me.

What happened was a wide receiver caught a fairly long and significant pass, and after catching it he fell over (no one had touched him; he just fell over from his own weight and force). He was so happy from making this amazing catch that he got right up and celebrated by vigorously spiking the ball. Someone on the defensive team scooped up the ball after it bounced a couple times, fairly casually (the way you naturally pick up a ball when the play’s over), but then came to realize, Wait a second, the referee hasn’t blown his whistle. The play isn’t over. The receiver wasn’t down on contact, he just fell over—and this isn’t college ball, this is the NFL, where the ball is still live as long as no one is down by contact. Holy crap, this is a live ball. These thoughts were also sinking into other people’s minds, including the announcers, who were excitedly explaining this to the audience at home. The defensive player proceeded to walk around with the ball (the referees watching him, never having blown the whistle), and then he just flat out ran with it. As the offensive-team-turned-defensive team finally realized that they had just turned the ball over, and the guilty receiver was praying to God, asking why he was so stupid, the defensive player was able to run into the endzone for a touchdown. (Actually, he might have been brought down before that; I’m not sure.)

This was all so absurd and so incredibly funny that I almost crapped my pants laughing.

So does anyone remember this? Does anyone remember what teams and what people were involved? (For some reason, I think the stupid receiver was on the Tennessee Titans, although I’m not sure.) Is there a video clip (or at least a news story or something) of this online?

I dont think this is what you are looking for.

However i remember another time something similiar happen. The texans were like 2nd goal at like 5-7 yard line. David carr threw quickly to andre johnson. Andre who had a clear path began to "prance" into end zone and spiked the ball at the 1 yard line then preceded into the endzone and then jumped into the stands(like the packers tend to do).

The football bounced at the 1 yard line and then rolled into the endzone then out of bounds. So this resulted in a touchback for the opposing team. Texans basically turned over the ball.

Willj - I don't remember that one, but I do remember a
(IIRC Vikings/ Packers) game in which a Packers reciever made a circus catch while
on his back. The defenders thought the pass was
incomplete, and started congratulating each other. It dawned on the receiver that no whistle had blown, so
he got up ran in for a touchdown.

Speaking of the Texans...I remember a game a couple of years back, Houston vs. Jacksonville. It's near the goal line, Gaffney gets the ball in the flat and basically has a walk in touchdown if he wants. Well, like most wide recievers, he starts showing off and runs with the ball out in his hand, arm completely extended...he fumbles it out of bounds, touchback, Jags ball  Lucky for him they still won.

It was Plaxico Burress, wasn't it?

It was Burress. I can't find anything good on it, really, except an allusion here (http://news.steelers.com/article/68508/).

(Look for the question about Colclough)

Here (http://www.jaguars.com/Story/780.asp) is a recap of the game from the official Jaguars site.
